My wife and I this week went back to Tokyo Steakhouse after an absence of some 3/4 years. The last time I had had delicious Halibut and we enjoyed ourselves..... Well we were SHOCKED to say the least! The restaurant was dirty. The service was minimal, and the restrooms were filthy, having been unattended for some time! They "no longer" serve Halibut without giving an explanation, the vegetables were cold and uncooked and I've had diarrhea for 2 days now!! Needless to say, WE WON'T BE BACK!! If you read this and still go there you'll get what you deserve!!!! PS: the salmon I ordered had been grilled so long it was like leather. My wife's chicken was "dry and cold" and "even the RICE was cold!" SAVE yOUR $-- GO ELSEWHERE! BEST teppanyaki in town by far. The bacon in the fried rice is amazing. The spicy sauce is our favorite sauce anywhere and we have tried them all. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is that they've gotten pretty pricey and the decor is lacking. If we want to take friends and family from out of town here I always feel the need to warn them that it looks awful but that the food is really good.. I wish they would update it. Had a wonderful birthday celebration dinner for my mom with all of our family (party of 10). Had reservations at 5:30pm and the staff was amazing. We brought in our cake and they put it in the fridge for us which we completely appreciate. The Teppanyaki chef was Awesome! Very friendly and entertaining. All of our food came out perfectly. The only reason this is not a 5 star review is that there are no baby changing table in either of the men or women's restroom, so we had to take our 6 month old to the car. We ordered Sukiyaki, normally the meat in Sukiyaki is very thin and tender. The meat was very thick and not tender at all, The floor was also not very clean. I don't think we will be back. There are too many other restaurants that serve better food. read more

Even with a reservation we had to wait over an hour before our cook showed up and it was a slow night. Couldn't get drink service. Bathrooms were a total disaster. Food was undercooked. Chef ruined my entire groups shirts by flinging oil and sauce the whole night. Dining room was trashed. This place has gone so unbelievably downhill it's insane. This restaurant does not answer the phone at all. I have called for hours multiple days to make a reservation. Upon finally making a reservation I was told they only hold our spot for 5 minutes. So my party and I got there early and checked in and waited for an hour before they finally sat us. What's the point of a reservation if you have to wait an hour? Took us a week to even get a reservation there and then had to wait and the cook didn't even have a performance for us. Not going back here. read more

This place went from my absolute favorite teppan yaki restaurant, to one of my least favorite. I've been going there for about ten years and my last visit will be my last. Their quality of food has continued to decrease while the wait time, even after seated, has continued to increase. Their New York steak on my last visit was nearly inedible. It was tougher than stew meat that got stir-fried. Their sauce is still awesome, but it didn't make up for the bad experiences I've been having. Wait staff has been very slow lately too. This place is seriously great. We had teppanyaki and I was very satisfied. I had the vegetarian option, which turned out to be a delicious veggie and tofu stir fry. The chef was also very accommodating and made my fried rice without bacon. Our waiter even brought me a soy based miso soup without me asking! I thought this was very thoughtful. Tokyo steakhouse is the top teppanyaki place in my opinion. Best fried rice hands down with the typical corn, green bean, peas, carrots and delicious bacon. The spicy chicken is unparalleled and the New York steak is a great cut. The seafood is exceptional and always well cooked. The staff is friendly and stays up on drinks. The teriyaki is a good consistency, not too think and definitely not too thin. A real winner is the spicy mayo sauce that I have not had anywhere else and have tirelessly tried to replicate and failed. It's not too spicy and has incredible flavor. Jeremy, one of the waiters, is super friendly and feels like family. No other teppanyaki place comes close and we've been to them all. read more

Worst service ever! My ice tea was brought to me with food floating in it.. no it wasn't lemon. When our soup and salad came to table we didn't have any napkins or utensils. Ten min later she came back to table still no forks, chop sticks or napkins. A bus boy sat a stack of plates and forks down at the end of the table and walked away.. still no waitress.. our chief was awesome... food was good and portions were large. I've been here many times since it's so close to my house. First they have a handwritten sign stating that lunch teppanyaki was full. We walk in and there is only one teppanyaki table being served. I understand it is cheaper during lunch hours and they want to limit it but if that's the case, don't offer lunch special prices. We decide to have a sit down lunch instead. We both order. No chopsticks or straws provided. We had to go locate them ourselves. Time passes and I don't get my food. I ask for it to go since the other guest had already finished. No apology from our server Barrie. Closest to an apology was "sorry, yours takes longer to make". Left with my to go order, no apology, and will never return. ;( this type of service was not expected. read more

One of the worst dining experiences of my life. Stopped in for a birthday lunch with six other people. Seated quickly on the regular dining side. The lighting is so bizarre that you literally have to turn your menu toward the front windows to read anything. For an appetizer we ordered the tempura calamari. Lightly battered, thick filet sticks. They were the best part of the whole meal. Also ordered potstickers. They were tiny, flavorless, and overcooked. I opted to try the chicken boat, which is literally plated on a small boat. As a starter I chose the miso soup. The flavor was awful. The main entree included two greasy overcooked chicken wings, a piece of sliced grilled chicken that was flavorless without teriyaki sauce, a tiny greasy flavorless spring roll, four tempura battered veggies and one tempura battered shrimp all of which wasn't half bad, an ice cream scoop of bland starchy potato salad, and fried rice. How do you screw up potato salad and fried rice?! Really disgusting. I can deal with all of this. I picked through my food and ate a few things. However, my dear old grandmother left without eating anything. She ordered the soft shell crab salad. The crab was so overcooked and fried far too long. The batter was as dark as a cup of coffee. After a few bites she said she couldn't eat it and sent it back. She then ordered a steak. After waiting 30min we told the waitress to simply forget about it. My sweet grandmother had to ask the waitress several times for a refill of her iced tea before she finally got it. The rest of our guests also received greasy and overcooked meals. Nobody was happy. Between the awful food and the sloppy service, we will never go back. And we will dissuade friends and family from patronizing this establishment as well. read more

Ate here yesterday (12/30/13) and had some of the worst service I've ever had in a restaurant. When we came in we were quoted a 20 minute wait time for tempenyaki. That's entirely fine. I understand that they can get busy, and in turn have long wait times. We had a group of 3 and decided to wait. Turns out they only have two chefs cooking. We waiting AN HOUR before being seated at a table. I went to the hostess and said that we were quoted 20 minutes, and it has been 3 times that. We were seated while the busser was still cleaning the table, and there was still rice and other food remnants left on the table when we were sat down. After being seated we were served our drinks, but had to wait ANOTHER 20 minutes before a cook was even at our table to start our food. It was ridiculous. Not only that, but after waiting an hour and twenty minutes, we find out that they are out of the filet minion that my wife and father-in-law wanted to order for their lunch. I was also seated in a seat where all the smoke from the sauce and the steam from the rags blew directly in to my face while cooking the meal. I'm not sure if they're having issues with their steam hoods or what. When asked to speak to the manager the staff said there was none available. I asked when the manager would be in so I could place a phone call, she said she didn't know. The manager seems to always come and go. I'd like to say this is a fluke, but the dirty flat tops have been an issue before in the past, and during one visit when we invited a friend to check out this restaurant that we previously enjoyed we were served raw bacon in our rice, again, the flat tops were dirty, and the cook flung food off of the food prep table, once hitting our guest with a small amount of rice. I left my phone number on our credit card receipt on 12/30/13 and asking the manager to give me a call but never heard from them. I've been burned by this place too many times to return, this was the last straw. read more

Ok so I must first say I normally eat at Sakura Chaya so this is kind of like comparing a Volkswagen to a Ferrari, but I literally live right around the corner, so I just had to try this place even know I've gotten mixed reviews. Well to be fair, I ordered spicy chicken which is what I always order at Sakura Chaya. I also always just drink water so that was the first thing I ordered. It was obviously tap water which most places serve, but it was really pretty bad. I then was served the mushroom soup, which tasted like the bad tap water with a little flavoring. Next it was time for one of my favorites, the fried rice. I love to dip it in the hot and spicy sauce, so I couldn't wait to taste theirs. Their hot and spicy sauce tasted like pure mayonnaise with a little spice to it, it was disgusting. I doctored it up with additional teriyaki sauce, but it only helped a little. The rice was very moist, but not in a good way, kinda gooey. It was now time for the vegetables, they were fine. Then the chicken, can't mess that up right? Well they managed to. It was thin flat chicken, looked like it had been run over by a truck, and had a dingy color prior to cooking. Once done, it was rubbery and tasteless, but I did eat it all as I was very hungry. Our chef was filthy, but very nice. You will see a number of comments about how filthy the place is, and I can't say I disagree, just go to the bathroom... All in all, if you've never eaten at Sakura Chaya, or a good teppanyaki restaurant, you might find this place ok not knowing better, however, step foot one time in Sakura Chaya or the like, and you will never eat here again. I don't take the time to leave such replies often, but this place really needs an overhaul from ground up! read more

The "best" tasting teppanyaki in Fresno hands down and I don't normally say this because Im a teppanyaki snob but there is no other better than them especially that fried rice, it would make you dream of it. Sushi wise it is above average but not amazing in my opinion. So I would come for their teppanyaki but optionally for their sushi. Their service is good and friendly, but really slow when they get busy so I would avoid busy rush hours (lunch time noon-2 or dinner 6-8). The interior is not the best impression of this place, kinda tacky and dingy looking and lacks appeal in that atmosphere area, but it isn't horrible. If your here for the teppanyaki show, they can be good at times, but not always excellent. I really come here for the taste because its so amazing bomb. The teppanyaki here is the best, and I've already tried their contenders like sakura chaya a local favorite, Edo-ya, Takumi, and Sakanaya. I remain to say they have the best tasting teppanyaki in Fresno, and I don't say this lightly to any establishment. What makes the difference in any teppanyaki is their fried rice and their sauce and to me this is where tokyo steakhouse does really well, their spicy sauce is very tasty and so unique that you just can't put your fingers around what they put in it, very addictive and best part is, they don't charge extra like other places. Their fried rice is like amazing bomb, I have never tasted a teppanyaki fried rice that flavorful and tasty, and yet it doesn't have much, but is so good sometimes at night I just crave it. Their meat selection is great and their prices are really fair, because portion i huge for every meat. My favorite meat would be fillet mignon or calamari steak. Huge portions. Their seats are not the best in my opinion and their show is a hit and miss, some more entertaining than others, but their food here is what you should be coming for. Price wise is not too bad $8-$15 for lunch time per person. I would come for lunch because its a better deal and crowd is so much less. Sushi here is above average, that means that their fish is very fresh but their presentation or authenticity is lacking. I ordered the chirashi bowl, and it surely was not the best. It was an ok fix up, but not impressive, on the positive side the fish was fresh and NOT fishy, but the negative side they are kinda stingy for the $16 price and the presentation was not the best. The service is really nice here, they would fill up water all the time, but they can get kinda busy and that is where service would go south. So I avoid busy times and the experience has always been positive for me. read more

We had a five o'clock reservation for two for a hibachi/teppanyaki table. We ordered two diet cokes, the filet mignon and scallops, and the chicken and calamari. We were a little early so we had to wait a few minutes. No problem. We were then seated with the rest of the table. The hostess than turns ON the hibachi grill. We then waited approximately half an hour for our food and chef to arrive. Half an hour with extremely high heat on the grill? Yeah, that food's going to burn. And it did. All of it. It was burnt and tasted like propane gas. Have you ever had burnt and over cooked egg in your fried rice? It's not great. The soup and salad were nothing special. The soup was very salty but the salad dressing was very sweet at the bottom of the bowl. They arrived within the normal time range for a teppanyaki place but seriously guys, half an hour to wait for the actual meal, plus prep time? I was already hungry before I arrived. I started to get dizzy. The teriyaki sauce was very thick and sweet. I did sort of like the spicy mayo sauce offered. The rice was okay; I'm not too sure how I feel about the bacon but luckily the bacon wasn't too burnt. The egg pretty much disintegrated into the rice when mixed. Our chef burned pretty much everything except some of the sturdier vegetables. My calamari was slightly burntish but edible with sauce. The filet mignon was ordered medium and arrived pretty well done. The scallops were bland and burnt on the edges, but not overcooked on the inside. Bizarre! The chicken was very syrupy with teriyaki sauce on the outside but dry as sand on the inside. I had to dunk it several times in my sauce to make it edible. I left about 90% of my chicken on my plate and I really hate doing that. I went into this restaurant fully expecting to order a dessert but I wasn't given the opportunity to order it and either way, I didn't want to pay more for a dessert when my tab was already 50 dollars. I am very unhappy with spending this amount on this quality of food. It was also hard to flag down the waitresses, who seemed very nice but perhaps disorganized. I'd see four of them just hanging around the hostess booth doing nothing and not noticing me trying to flag them down for a refill. We had to refill our drinks three times each due to a) waiting a long time and inevitably sipping away at the soda for boredom's sake and b) due to the food's taste or consistency. The decor is confusing. If there's any decoration at all besides some sake bottles, it's all fish. Hardly anything to indicate Japan or Japanese cuisine. I didn't visit the bathrooms. The floors seemed to need a vacuuming but nothing extremely bad. We will not be coming back. I am very unhappy and it certainly was not money well spent. read more

My family went here for a birthday celebration. We had a large group of 10. We started by taking pictures in front of the beautiful Christmas tree. A very nice lady offered to take our picture. Turns out she was the owner. She chatted with my mom for a bit while we waited to be seated. When we were seated our waitress was very sweet and attentive. The restaurant was pretty busy. We did have to wait a bit for the chef that come and start our food service (they may have been short staffed) but all appetizers, salads, and drinks were served quickly. Once our chef arrived at the table he was amazing. It was so entertaining for the kids and adults too. The owner popped over and gave us complimentary drinks and check on us. The food was absolutely amazing. The filet mingon and fried rice were my favorite. Everything was delicious and we left happy and completely stuffed. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

They have no idea what it is, even the sushi guy looked like he barely knew. It's a basic sushi item...but whatev... We showed up at about 5:30 maybe yesterday evening. Any later and it gets busy. We were seated immediately. I will say that the hostesses really aren't the friendliest people in the world and you need to walk up to them to be acknowledged. We were seated at a table with 4 others who were ordering what they were going to have. Luckily my husband and I already knew what we wanted. Had we not, we would've felt rushed. I got the chicken and scallops, he got the chicken and new york strip. Drinks came, and they were ALWAYS full. That part of the dining experience could not have been better. So the cook came out after a while. We were able to finish our soup and salad. Love both of them. Simple, but tasty. Our cook was great. Steaks were cooked well, and he made jokes and food puns, which tickles me. My husband was instantly nicknamed "boss", which made me giggle. Everything was spiced just right and we were given the three sauces (god I love that ginger sauce). Fried rice is always amazing, scallops were perfect. Unfortunately I didn't have room in my tummy for anything else. But the chicken, vegetables, and little bit of friend rice I had left made an excellent lunch today. I'd love to do this more often, but it's a little spendy. It's worth it for the amount of food you get, but it's still a bit spendy. The more I travel down to the area for work, the more I notice the abundance of sushi houses and tepanyaki restaurants around! We got there around 845pm....and didn't realize they closed at 9pm. They have wonderful customer service. Not only did they not deny us a table, they did not rush us out at all. The place is clean (my requirement lol), the menu is pretty diverse with sushi to entrees and everything in between. I went the healthier route than usual and got the teriyaki chicken....with the sauce on the side and steamed veggies, not sauteed. The kitchen totally got it right and everything was delish--large portions too- i barely ate half of it. My friend got the chicken katsu--my usual. I was wary of getting that since the past few places in my travels just can't get it right. This place, though, made it perfectly, with the 'good' kind of panko, and it wasnt oily and it was all white meat. The grass is always greener....;p Prices are totally worth it, though its not even that expensive. So gonna eat here on my next trip back....and I'm getting my katsu instead too. ;) read more

Their Teppan-Yaki is delish. Last time I had the chicken and filet mignon. Filet was very tender and tasty. The fried rice with bacon is savory and they give a large portion. (Which I can easily eat all of, yum.) I always get their teriyaki and spicy sauce, slather it over everything and you can't go wrong. The only downfall of Teppan-Yaki here is it gets uncomfortably hot with all the fires and it being Clovis and it's already 100 degrees outside. If you don't want to get uncomfortably hot I recommend the sit down. The chicken boat is large and is a sample of chicken in all different forms. I have also ordered sushi nigiri as an appetizer and they give you a heaping serving of fish in comparison to the rice. The sushi was fresh and delightful. read more

Went on Friday and ordered sushi at a table. 2 of us and we ordered a total of 3 different dishes. Guest 1 received 1 of their 2 ordered Sushi Rolls while I waited for mine to arrive. Guest 1 finished their roll and was waiting for the next one, I still did not receive mine. My roll came and I finished it while guest 1 was still waiting for theirs to come. Server came and stated Sushi Chef "forgot to make it" and it will be coming shortly at not charge. We only go for the manager special roll which is the best ever! But quite expensive. I haven't tried the teppanyaki though. But everytime I go there it's always very dark. They take a while to seat you, I'm not very sure why. But the service isn't bad, it's okay! read more

Well the other 2 reviews really boggle my mind. Their basing their reviews on the sushi, which really irritates me. As far as I'm concerned its all in the name. Tokyo STEAK House. I mean think about it. You wouldn't go to a sea food restaurant and order a hamburger. If you want good Sushi go to Wassabi. That's where the fresh stuff is. As far as the Sushi chefs being young, well they have to start somewhere. Now, the meat and potatoes of this place is the teppanyaki. The chefs are awesome. The fried rice is made fresh, the New York Stake is flavorful and tender. I even had the shrimp. Everything was great and would definitely go back again. read more

We went here tonight for a friend's birthday, and I'm really not impressed. There's nothing new here that any other Teppanyaki restaurant in Fresno/Clovis doesn't do...same routine, they even employ the same chef's from Edo-ya...except, here, the food wasn't as good. I'm really hoping to have had a bad chef and waiter, since our entire table's chicken was dried out (and pretty much jerky), my order was ignored for a rare filet, one of our friends didn't get his beer until 10 minutes after we placed the drink order and he had to question the waiter...plus the "show" was sub-par (with non-existent table interaction). It seems silly to complain about this...our chef was extremely messy as well - parts of raw egg and bacon flying off the table and onto or plates as well as rice...it was VERY weird since every Teppan restaurant I've been to has always been so clean and orderly... Since we were a "party" of 8, we were charged the 15% automatic tip...so the chef and waiter split 40.00 for a very half-assed job. Oh - and a side note about reservations - their policy is that if your table is not fully in the restaurant within 5 minutes of your reservation time, your table is given up and you'll have to wait until your entire party has arrived and a new table is ready. read more
