Our original target was the Fresno location, but due to a GPS entry error, we ended up at their Clovis location! It was a little longer drive than usual, but still well-worth the drive. And besides, we were on a family long weekend break so who cares about distance... Our orders were quickly taken on the counter and we were off to find our table. A lot of places to choose from inside and outside seating was also available. And the place was nicely decorated and well-lit! Feels comfortable to dine inside! The menu was quite expansive. And you even have the choice of minor changes to the regular menu. I ordered an Oxtail Ramen...a first of this kind for me, so I just had to have it. And it passed with flying colors! I wish I paid attention to the fact that mine came with THIN noods though... I feel like I would've enjoyed my dish way more with thick noodles. To be honest, I should have done the build-your-own Ramen and selected everything I wanted myself... now I know. You live and you learn. The Wontons were good but we didn't eat much of it, as it came out the same time as the ramen. Once the ramen was served, our main focus was on that and that filled us up! Packed the rest to go. For this being our first time, it wasn't bad but it didn't wow us. If I'm being honest, so far-- the best Ramen we've ever had was in a small little shop we found while in Thailand back in March (yup, Thailand!). Unfair to this rating maybe? When we first visited, it was also one of the few Asian restaurants open during the holidays, which made getting that reservation feel even more special. Coming from Vegas, the beau is especially particular about sushi, and Oiza successfully exceeded expectations. As for me, having dined at Japanese restaurants from Nobu and Morimoto to Michelin-starred experiences, I was equally impressed by the ambience, service, presentation and overall execution. It also makes sense that the operation feels seasoned: Oiza is part of Lin's Restaurant Group, the same local family behind other Fresno-area favorites including Hino Oishi, J-Pot, Spicy J's, Ramen Hayashi and Lin's Fusion. It's obvious the staff has been properly trained in both front- and back-of-house fine dining operations. We've now dined here three times -- each for a different experience -- and Oiza has delivered. First Holidate: Fabulous evening from start to finish. We repeated several favorites and ventured into a few new dishes: Hamachi ceviche -- Worth repeating. Grilled oysters -- A welcome addition to the table. Uni udon pasta -- The one miss for us. I wanted more uni and umami depth; the noodles were slightly overcooked and the sauce could have been smoother. Hi Tuna roll -- Just as good the second time. Amaebi & yellowtail sashimi -- Fresh and beautifully presented. Our server Itzy was wonderful throughout the evening and surprised us with a complimentary dessert. We would have ordered the matcha parfait if we hadn't been so full -- or if Dubai chocolate wasn't already waiting at home. Third time was the charm: We came back for Oiza's impressive luncheon specials and loaded up on several of our favorites while finally trying the temakis. It was fun to have them cooked in front of us and the meat was buttery, I would say to save your money. Let them cook your fried rice in front of you for the ambiance and you get more for less money. It also has Wagu beef. We also tried the bone marrow and we liked it but I do believe it's an acquired taste. We had two mixed drinks the Hibiscus Shoga, very good, but a bit too sweet. Then the Kohahu Carmel Old Fashioned which was a recommendation and we love old fashions. This was good but way too sweet for us. I do recommend the Kurosawa Nigori. We plan to return to try the spoons and seafood risotto and maybe the lobster temaki. Also recommend going earlier than later. Essentially the options are plates and sushi, so we did 2 of each, and later took a dragon roll home. Coming inside, it was initially welcomed because of how hot it was outside. But as our bodies began to cool down, I started to notice that it was a little warm in the restaurant too. It wasn't hot, but clearly they were concerned with their PG&E bill. I think one of the younger workers who arrived later noticed it too, because after they got there, the room temperature went down to a comfortable level again. As for the food, I was telling my daughter that it's too bad we didn't find Miso Hungry that day we were on the hunt for fried rice. Instead we had that horrible restaurant in Clovis. I think the only thing missing was the show you normally get with a tepanyaki restaurant. Was the good at the level of Hino Oisi or Edo-ya? Not quite, but it was still good. Nothing against a restaurant being a hole in the wall, but for $100 for 5 plates, no drinks, the food better be great, not just good. He knew what he was doing and at some point in cooking, lit a fire and we sang Happy Birthday to our granddaughter. He asked us often if we would like a certain food on our plate which was nice. We all received plenty of each item and at the end, took our leftovers home. Pepsi products, so I had a Dr. Pepper. One of the kids had a Shirley Temple and the other a lemonade.
