I remember this was my last meal before moving to Ottawa from Toronto in 2019. Six years later, I'm glad to see it still going strong, albeit the portion is less than I remember, unfortunately. That said, covid and inflation are real and I still want to support Tokyo kitchen, especially given that their food is always fresh and well prepared. The vibe of the restaurant is always relaxing. One of my favourite things about Tokyo kitchen.
We visited Tokyo Kitchen during the big snowstorm after a friend recommended it. The menu looked reasonable, so I was excited to give it a try. It's on the smaller side, which is great if you're indecisive! We shared the Curry Udon, Salmon & Scallop Don, and Corn Creamy Korokke. Everything was decent, though I've had more flavourful curry udon elsewhere. They did have actual wasabi as well. The korokke was the highlight--crispy on the outside and creamy inside, almost like a deep-fried corn chowder. I finished the meal with a mochi, which was a nice little treat. Service was pleasant and quick, and the prices were reasonable for downtown. Overall, a solid spot for a casual Japanese meal!
First visit to Tokyo Kitchen at the recommendation of a friend. The standout items for me were the pork katsu and salmon & scallop sashimi. The pork was fried so well, and it wasn't dry at all on the inside, nor was it covered in sauce. The sashimi was also quite fresh! The bento boxes might not look like large portions, but trust me, it is very filling, especially with a generous portion of tempura. Their tempura batter reminded me more of fish & chips I would say, in that it wasn't as light/panko-flaky as most tempura that I've tried before. My friend opted for the shrimp croquette (again, fried to perfection and super creamy inside) and the sukiyaki udon, which looked so comforting on a chillier night. Service was attentive, with our server coming by regularly to refill our water and check in. The inside of the restaurant was fairly tidy/clean - including the washroom, which is a huge bonus for me.
Lowkey a hidden gem, because Tokyo Kitchen is the place to be! What we ordered: Chicken Katsu Curry Katsudon - Chicken Cutlet on rice with egg & onion Dishes are around $15 each and the service was efficient and our server was friendly! They have bento sets on the menu as well and I'm def trying that out next time
Me and my friends went for lunch after having rehearsals, and this was an awesome lunch spot to go to! The prices were very good for the amount of food we got, and I love that they also served japanese sweets! I ordered the omelette curry and it was so good; the curry was the right level of spice and the omelette wasn't overcooked. I will definitely say get the stewed beef with it because the stewed beef was so soft and had alot of flavour. The service was quick, and the servers were so polite, I will definitely come back here again. The ambiance of the restaurant definitely gave like your typical Japanese eatery with the way the front of the restaurant was set up; I do wish they had a bigger place though as the bathrooms were in a bit of a tight space.
The food here is actually really damn good and filling. The food was also very fresh and felt clean.
We came here for dinner and we were seated after a short wait. I would probably make a reservation if there were more than 2 of us next time as there aren't too many seats. We ordered takoyaki and chicken nanban as appetizers. I ordered the pork bento box and my boyfriend got the pork katsu curry with an omurice. The bento came with miso soup, tempura, salad, and sashimi. I really enjoyed the bento box and the sashimi tasted very fresh. We also had dango for dessert which was also very good. I would love to come back to try their donburi and other appetizers!
Solid place for a bento box, relax and good amount of food for a reasonable price. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here if you are out of town, but if I was here for a while or lived locally, this would be a regular spot if I wanted to feel satiated. We got the pork katsu bento which comes with rice, salad, miso soup, sashimi, and shrimp & vegetable tempura. The miso soup was solid, I didn't bother touching the salad knowing the task at hand. I was nervous if the sashimi at first but it was fresh and good. The scallops were large and sweet. The tempura and katsu were fried and strained so it didn't sit in a pool of its own grease. The pork was cooked perfectly, crispy on the outside and moist inside. If you are somehow still hungry, there is a gelato place next to the restaurant to hit up for a nice dessert before you roll back home.
Tokyo Kitchen definitely has a warm home-cooked meal feel to it. We went here for dinner and got: - Salmon Saikyo Bento: While the salmon was a bit small for the price, it was grilled to perfection. Side tempura had a good coating-to-shrimp ratio and sashimi was fresh. - Chicken Karaage Curry: Good fry to the karaage (tasty and not oily), super generous curry sauce. Added cheese and it helped break up the monotony. - Mitarashi Dango and Kashiwa Mochi: Loved these sticky desserts. Both were chewy delights. Prices were generally reasonable. Service was friendly and quick. Place was spacious and well lit. My wife loved it so much she got salmon ikura donburi delivered the next day (which had a generous serving of salmon and ikura). So looks like we'll definitely be coming back for more!
4.5 imo but we'll round up :). Came here on a Thursday night so it wasn't really busy. The storefront doesn't actually look that big but there's actually a lot of seating in there. Ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry (15.90), Shrimp Creamy Korokke (3.90), and to my surprise that they had - a glass of Asahi Black (8.90). I actually really enjoyed everything. The katsu was cooked just right, portions were on the large side, comes with a little salad. The korokke was probably my favorite thing I ordered. It's kind of fried to the texture of the katsu but is really creamy inside, quite nice! Food overall I'd probably give it a 4 but extra 0.5 for Asahi black offering. Very good and decent value for what you get!
A friend introduced me to this place not too long ago and it was my first visit, but I'm already excited to go back! We came in on a Friday evening after work and it was pretty busy with almost all tables taken. What I had: - Chicken Karaage Dinner Set (Rice, Salad, Side Dish, Miso Soup) Final Thoughts: The restaurant is at a convenient location between Bloor and Wellesley stations with polite staff, good food, and I look forward to returning to try more of the menu.
Past by here multiple times as from the front it was never anything "special". This was easily a big mistake. Skimmed through the menu and saw many familiar Japanese dishes so decided to give it a shot. Opted for chicken curry, soba with assorted tempura, and original and corn kuroke. Curry was well portioned and extremely flavourful. The chicken katsu was meaty, crunchy, airy and light which complimented the curry well. Soba was wheaty as you'd expect and the tempura was crispy and airy. Both kuroke had an excellent shell but definitely the corn was the better of the 2. Not sure how I have been walking past this place without stopping and now I can foresee myself being back quite regularly!
A solid place to get your donburi and katsu fix. Sashimi and scallops were fresh, and the katsu chicken&shrimp donburi (Tendon) is comforting. I grabbed some takeout while I was in the area and noticed they also had Tofu cheesecake, hanami dango and other mochi treats. I definitely would've picked it up if it wasn't that I was already holding an ice cream cone in hand. Lots of seats were available on the weekday I was there.
Now this is Japanese home-style cooking. Went on a Saturday evening with a friend; it was quite packed. Their Bento boxes (~$22-25) are very, very jam-packed: a variety of sashimi and tempura in addition to the main and the usual soup and salad. The eel (unagi) I got was solid, as was the quality of rice it was on, but the sashimi was *excellent* - sweet in a way that I haven't experienced in North America. Service was kind, as you'd expect. read more

Ordered the following: Pork Tenderloin Katsu Curry Large servings, great balance of curry, rice and salad. Loved it! Would order again if revisiting ~ Corn & Shrimp Korokke Decided to try it out because it looked interesting. Best decision! Rich and creamy fillings with crispy outside. Probably my favourites from this place. Takoyaki Not bad but not particularly amazing either. Would rather get more Croquets :3 Grilled Mackerel Like the Takoyaki, not bad at all. Came sizzling and presentation was pretty decent. But while pretty good, it wasn't amazing. Would rather have tried something else. Overall: great ambiance, pretty decent food and while kind of expensive, it's still within somewhat affordable ranges. Would revisit. read more

good food and good service! had a great time with friend. The Agedashi tofu is like fried tofu tempura but smoothier, and the bento is good in size and variety, you got 3 kinds of sashimi in there. Definitely wanna back again next time read more
The GF and I walk by this place all the time, we finally decided to give it a try after reading up on the generally favorable reviews on Yelp. I'd like to start off by saying this place is really hard to find. There aren't any real indications on the outside that it's a Japanese restaurant. No sign flippers or big pictures of their menu on display. Just look out for the many people on the patio eating curry bowls and sashimi! The food is good, not good enough to speed dial home to your mom and tell her you're taking her here next mothers day though. You can tell the food is made with care and by actual Japanese chefs in the back. How do I know this you ask? Well I heard them speaking Japanese to each other! I had the Pork Katsu Curry dish and the GF went with the salmon sashimi. Both were made quick and came out fresh. Only problem though, the portions were a bit small. So small that I went to red bench after to gorge on ice cream sandwiches because I was still hungry. They take credit card surprisingly as most of these types of places are cash only, so that was a plus. A brother has to collect his air miles knowmsayin? Service was a bit slow, but they were pretty friendly. Expect to drop about $50 for a small dinner for 2 at this place, knowing you will be hungry after. Overall, I'd come back here again, but it wouldn't be my first choice for Japanese in the downtown area. read more
After trying other Japanese restaurants in the area, I had high hopes for this this place with their high price tag and menu selection. Unfortunately we were disappointed with what we got. The presentation is superb with stylish modern containers but they lacked the rich/deep flavours in each of their menu items we had Their karaage was very dry and was not served with any sort of dipping sauce (sweet soy sauce or some spicy mayo) Their wagyu beef udon has a very bland broth served with over cooked udon noodles. The beef included was very sweet from some sort of marinate which did not compliment the dish. Their beef curry was simply braised beef and onions in a very thin dark brownish curry sauce. Typical Japanese curries are often thick in consistency and has a golden yellowish hue which this lacked. Their bbq eel on rice bento offered 3 slices of sashimi which can be on par with other AYCE sushi places, tempura which was just mediocre, salad and the unagi don. I had expected to see at least a miso soup with this but was not offered. The flavours for the bbq eel was sub par at best. read more

Came here for lunch on a weekday. I like the lunch special bento you can pay $16ish for a lot of food. For the main dish you can choose salmon, chicken or pork katsu. It came with salmon sashimi, salad, assorted tempura and rice. The tempura was crispy and wasn't oily. Pork katsu was surprisely moist. （I didn't finish the whole meal, took it to go as usual） Will come back for other items on the menu. read more
What a cute little cafe that serves authentic japanese comfort food. They have udon, ramen, croquette, curry, soba and more. I opted for the vegetable and shrimp tempura cold udon noodles with a corn and curry croquette. I really enjoyed the udon as it reminded me of the taste in Japan. Light and refreshing. The croquettes were creamy and didn't feel too heavy - as they were battered and fried. I ended my meal with a matcha tiramisu, which wasn't my favourite, compared to the real tiramisu but hit the spot for my sweet tooth. The dishes are reasonably priced, and the service was quick, prompt and very friendly. read more
This place is a quick walk from work. I've had it bookmarked for quite sometime. It's deceiving because you would never expect that there's a beautifully designed quaint place inside. We were in a rush just had about 45min to sit order eat and go. A friendly server came by with the menu. They have several kunch menu options. We opted for the chicken karaage lunch and the katsu lunch. Our lunch came with rice and a salad. The dish was a good sized helping. The salad could've been a little more exciting and the karaage could have use d a little more salt. However, it was cooked well. The katsu was the same both with chicken breast. I guess this is also the simplicity of Japanese cuisine. I wasn't as adventurous today but i really wanted to try the japanese curry option. As we were waiting, several patrons nearby ordered some really yummy looking dishes. Service: they were friendly and polite while giving you the space for your conversation and peace to enjoy your meal. I will definitely return to try it the other items on the menu. Im looking forward to it. read more

One of the best places for Japanese food that make you feel like you're in Japan. We had the Zaru Soba with Tempura, along with a side of karaage. There are many Japanese restaurants in Toronto, but not many have soba on the menu. Tokyo Kitchen absolutely does the soba right and reminded us of the taste of soba from Asakusa, Japan. This place is a fantastic gem! read more

The newly opened Tokyo Kitchen offers something special to Toronto. Succulent Tendon paired with a fragrant Katsudon really brings the experience to life. I would highly recommend an order of Dragon Sushi rolls to go with your main dish. All in all, a really great place and I'm so glad to have it back in the heart of Toronto! read more

I believe I came here before when it only sold curry but coming back here again I love the atmosphere of the place and the renovations they've done. I feel like I can now take coworkers to lunch here and enjoy the atmosphere. The prices are a bit on the expensive side but the portions are very big. I wasn't able to finish my curry dish but the food was delicious. I ordered the creamy corn croquette with curry. It came with mash potato salad which was delicious a side of salad and the main dish. It's one of the best Japanese curry I've had in the city and I have to say the croquette was done perfectly. It was crispy on the outside and maintained the soft cheesy inside. This is now my favourite dish here.will be coming back here again for lunch! read more

You can say I'm on a lifetime mission to find the BEST KatsuDon in the world :) We used to lived around the area and now lives up north. Heard from a co-worker there's a new'ish Japanese restaurant hidden in the east side of Yonge by Bloor and their KatsuDon is legit!! So, we decided to try it out. Indeed, it did not disappoint. The cutlet was fried just right. The meat was tender and batter was crispy. One recommendation is not the sauce/onion/egg get over cooked. Meat should be fresh and also not frozen. There was a small bloody smell to the meat. Fresher meat does not have that odor. Nevertheless, it was still delicious Will be Back again! This might be irrelevant, but a lot of reviews here keep on talking about how cute the waitress is. I can contest to this. She is a lovely person who is both efficient and polite. Besides this, Tokyo Kitchen is a pretty awesome place. It's rather small with no washroom (whaaat?) but other than those flaws, the menu has a lot of choices to choose from! They have croquettes and Japanese curry and tonkatsu, which is kind of hard to find around here. I personally think their lunch or dinner specials are much more worth your money. The portions are pretty large, so don't balk at the price on the menu. A lot of university students eat here, but it's not terribly crowded when you go in to eat. I found everything to be quite good- the tempura is doughy but very crispy, and the salad is the basic kind you can find at any restaurant. I swapped my teriyaki for BBQ eel, which for the record was not worth it. There were 4 slices of eel on top of a bowl of rice, but you pay an extra $1 if you order the BBQ eel in your set menu. One other thing I don't like is that you have to pay for tea. It happens a lot in Toronto but I still feel personally victimized whenever a place doesn't offer up tea immediately for free. I think we should start a petition for free tea in Japanese restaurants! read more

This is my favourite place for Japanese home-style food. I'm gonna warn you ahead of time that this is a no frills, lowkey lunch/dinner spot with excellent food. I come here to eat after a long day of work by myself and it always hits the spot. Only bring people who share the sentiment on good food--this is not a glamorous first date, it's a simple and earnest place for companions to enjoy quiet jazz and the sound of slurp slurp. There is a bathroom in the building complex. Ask for the key and walk around into the parking lot. It's the second door from the parking security. My go-to is the tempura udon--perfectly crisp tempura with just the right amount of batter, and wide assortment of vegetables. The ten-don with katsu is the best deal on the menu. You can never go wrong with the una-don, absolutely delicious every time. The sashimi is also fresh and portioned well. I always have a hard time deciding what to eat. This is where to go for authentic Japanese food. If I had to complain about anything, the waitresses are a little forgetful but cute nonetheless. read more

Walked in since we wanted to try a new Japanese place (one of our favorites Tokyo Grill further south on Yonge just closed and moved to uptown). Saw the reviews and have to agree with most comments that the menu is quite pricey. We wouldn't mind the price if the quality was great but this isn't the case. I got the Tendon Katsu Don. Good amount of shrimp tempura and pork cutlets but the pork had this suspect taste. Like it wasn't fresh. My partner didn't taste it in her katsu curry but I definitely tasted it in some of my pieces. An hour or so later I was feeling queasy. Coincidence? Most likely will not come back after that, which is too bad since it had such great promise. Food looked good. read more

Simple but so delicious! Their veggie tempura is crunchy on the outside but juicy and fresh on the inside, successfully preserving the flavour of the vegetables. We also ordered the chicken katsu curry. The katsu is well fried and the curry very well-flavoured with pieces of onions and beef in it (much beyond just water and curry cubes). One of our favourite appetizers is their korokke which is a Japanese meat and mashed potato croquette. It is so well fried on the outside and so creamy on the inside. Service was also 10/10! Friendly and attentive service. read more

Stumbled upon this cute little cafe because just like everyone else in Toronto, I will try any restaurant that uses the words "Japan", "Tokyo" or any other cute Japanese sounding words in their name (90% of Torontonians). Food was mediocre at best with absurd prices. Not sure if they're trying to cover the costs of being out of operation for so long with the renovation on top. Every entree on their brunch menu is 15-20 dollars. Their tiny rolls that look like someone who decided to make sushi at home for the first time are 10. Their curry portion size is comical. Just go hit up mr donkatsu for the price you're paying since it's the same. Definitely not worth unless you're the type of person who devotes their life on getting likes on IG even though their presentation isn't great. Tempura don is 14.99. Tempura itself is 9.90. You're paying a markup of 5 dollars for a bowl of rice with no additional sides. But it's totally worth it for the presentation. read more

Great Food, Great Service, a Little Expensive. FOOD - GREAT! My friend and I both ordered curry, one chicken and one pork. The portions for the Pork is larger than the Chicken, but the Chicken tastes more tender. The Curry is excellent, and I'll definitely go back for more. But ah, so much to try, so little stomach space... The store actually has a very large menu, so I wish that was available online. Maybe I'll take a picture next time. SERVICE - GREAT! It's the usual hospitality you'd expect from a Japanese restaurant. Water comes quickly, and everyone is so polite. PRICE - Mid-range It's more expensive than Kaiju, but you get larger portions here, and it's authentic cuisine here. The side dishes were more expensive than I would have liked. Takoyaki comes to nearly $1 per piece. EXTRA NOTE The chopsticks. They use the kind that is hexagonal at the grips and square at the tips! All in all, Tokyo Kitchen is a great choice with a wide variety of items to choose from, but definitely the best place for curry in downtown Toronto. read more

I love this place. It is bright, clean and warm. The waitress is so cute and friendly. The restaurant is owned by Japanese and they are all super warm hearted. I ordered the pork curry rice and Ikura side dish. I am not a fan of curry, so it is delicious but It did not surprise me. I really love Ikura, but with the radish is kind of sour. The food is fair good. But I really really love this quit white place. read more

Wonderful Japanese restaurant. Food is always consistently delicious and in large portions. Staff is personable and attentive. Dining area is clean and welcoming and elegant. There is no pretension at all in this restaurant. Good to bring friends or a date. There is also a patio. I like the slow cooked beef curry or pork katsu bento because of the tasty variation. Tokyo Kitchen is a real favourite. read more

I had been to Tokyo Kitchen before they closed a few years ago and recently returned for the first time after their re-opening. The decor was definitely nice and very spacious and it wasn't busy at all during lunch time on a weekday. I ordered the korokke curry which was very good, although a bit pricey for what it is ($16 for a curry with only one korokke, rice and potato salad). I think the high prices are part of why it's not too busy here nowadays compared to before, when I remember it used to be packed. They do have a take out section now with premade bento boxes and desserts, I would consider doing that next time for a better deal. read more
Very delightful place to eat! Went with a friend after work (who coincidentally came with me to Kaiju) to try out this place on his recommendation. After a short commute we found out that the place was closed! ...well at least until 5:30. After a short wait at the nearby starbucks we finally saw the place was open and decided to head on in. We were greeted by a small cozy restaurant and - get this - an actual Japanese waitress! She brought us our menus and quickly brought us our waters. Being the big guys we were, I ordered a pork cutlet curry dinner and my friend got the chicken tatsuta curry dinner, along with a spicy salmon (to test how their sushi was) and the croquette (I've always wanted to try these!) The waitress (did I mention she was Japanese?) took our order, went into the kitchen and yelled the order to the chef (who also was Japanese!). Our orders came relatively quickly. We then realized our grave error in that we had ordered way too much. Digging in, the food was quite good! The katsu plate gave you 2 medium sized pieces of pork, along with a heaping amount of rice, and curry to boot. I'm rather torn now, as both Kaiju and Tokyo kitchen have stolen my heart (and stomach respectively). I think at the end of the day, I'd have to give it to Tokyo Kitchen, as their meat was that much more tender, and their curry was that much more gratuitous. The owner of Kaiju will always have a spot in my heart, but for the time being, Tokyo Kitchen has my stomach. Their croquette was, okay. As this was the first time I've had it, I have no comparison to pit against it, so all I can say was that it tasted to me like a deep fried potato cutlet, with small bits of meat thrown into it. Finally their Spicy Salmon Roll was subpar. I guess as a kitchen, I'll stick with their kitchen items. At the end of the day, this place is a nice spot to go to for a cozy little conversation with a few others. Their generously sized portions will leave you beyond satisfied, and if not, their prices were quite good to start off with. Just order something else and be on your way. Their (Japanese) service was extremely friendly and courteous and made our visit all the more delightful. Just make sure you don't need the washroom before you head there, as they'll give you a key attached to a spatula, and make you walk out of the restaurant in shame towards their shared washroom facilities located in the parking garage in which the restaurant is located by. Yeah, that's a thing. read more
