Bumping my review up to 5 stars purely because Tokyo Central is putting in efforts to reduce food waste! After 7pm their pre-made food goes on sale for 20% off. There's a clearance produce rack and I've also noticed some of their meats being marked reduced by 20% because they are close to their sell by date. This really shows me that they care about food being utilized and they're not one to just toss things as soon as it doesn't look 'perfect'. Tokyo central is coo like they have a wide selections of meats and Japanese treats. It's clean and organized in there, there parking on top, not stressful. If you wanna splurge on some Wagyu, I saw some marbled MFs but there were other seasoned meats. I was most interested in the to-go food, particularly the egg salad sandwiches because I ate those everyday in Japan and brought 3 back with my to eat on the flight home (sorry to the ppl on that flight, I know it stank.) Their sushi and nigiri selection was pretty solid so we grabbed some and it was fresh. The egg salad sandwiches were NOT like the ones in Japan unfortunately. And they were like $7. I think it's just a quality of ingredients thing, I think in Japan they just have better quality bread and eggs. All in all, I thought it was fun to look around and grab snacks. Finally checked out this spot after hearing so much hype about it when it first opened. Came on a Sunday around 1pm and it was busy but not insanely crowded (but I noticed that around 2-3 it got much busier). The ready to eat food selection is vast and they have so many fun options! I wish they had more sando and dessert options, as well as some sort of cake bakery area as I didn't see that. The frozen dessert selection is pretty big though! I tried the aburi salmon and a handroll set and they were decent -- nothing I'd necessarily come back for but satisfied my hunger and were tasty. I would come back to try the hot food though! I walked by and it smelled so good. It's nice that they provide chopsticks and utensils near the checkout area, as well as a microwave near the exit. Also tried the strawberry cream sando, which was exactly what you'd expect, but hit the spot since I've been craving it for a while! This place has a small designated parking on the roof of the market. I only went there on the weekdays so parking was not too bad. They offered a lot of sashimi and different style of cooked food for your convenience. Their sashimi is fresh! Definitely need to grab if you like sashimi. We also like the garlic beef rice for $10.99. There are many Japanese snack, skincare products and drinks available in the store. We also bought some ramen to try. Wifey wanted to shop here when she watched a YouTube of some guy vlogging during their "Grand Opening" day. We waited a week before coming here, and there was still a line to get in. Although the line went swiftly, the place was hella crowded once we got inside. Once inside the store, I immediately grabbed some bottles Ito En brand green tea, which were on sale at that time. Navigating the store has a somewhat similar layout to H-Mart on Alemany. While H-Mart is bigger, Tokyo Central is more compact but spaced out more strategically due to the constraint of space. The Produce section is by the entrance and shortly after that are the meats and seafood. And yes they have Wagyu imported from Japan. Expect to pay premium price for these hunks of meat. Hey, you gotta do what you Wagyu do. They even have a "Hawaiian" section with items straight from the islands, which includes Zippy's. I won't have to bug my cousins anymore to send me some of these. But my favorite section would have to be the Sashimi and Poke section. Although they were mostly out of Poke and had a limited amount of Sashimi selection on our first visit, I managed to grab a bunch of them on my follow-up shopping another week later. They are also reasonably priced and pretty decent quality. Aside from that, there's also a good amount of variety to choose from. But if you want some higher quality sashimi, they have these too. They even have party platters decorated with pretty flowers. I hope they're edible...they better be. And like the usual Asian store, they have a wide variety of imported items from Japan and other Asian delicacies and brands. They pretty much have everything that is essential to a typical Asian-American household, especially here in the Bay Area with a large Asian population. Heck, even non Asians shop here since they've become accustomed to eating our favorites and I ain't side-eying them for shopping here. While their previous generations grew up eating sweets with flavors like vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and Oreo cookie, it's not unusual to see that Matcha and Ube are becoming more mainstream and Americanized. But that is for another conversation to be discussed further. They have parking on the roof and depending on the time of day, you can get it validated. April 4,2026 was finally able to shop here. It was so crowded people were bumping into us! Then there were the sweetest people that I chatted with. A wonderful variety of everything. I mean meats,I creams different fruits and hot food selection. The bathroom extremely clean and smelled like roses! My daughter spent 1 1/2 hours in there. Or do it seemed. Not a fan of crowds and have avoided since grand opening. The wait has finally come to an end. On a Thursday PM rush hour, a quick stop made plenty of sense. To my surprise, ample parking on the 2nd floor with just a few customers roaming the aisles. The selection in produce, meats, sashimi, bento, and liquor was a handful. Could not refuse grabbing a bit of everything. Could easily be my weekly source to groceries. Given the time, the hot bar was being cleaned and unavailable. Looking forward on another a visit to give it a try. Have been a frequent customer of Marukai and Don Quijote for years. Tokyo Central being a spinoff, it's not far from its siblings. Okay, Wow! What a shopping experience. If you love Asian cuisine, I can't imagine a better experience. I spent many decades there in the Bay and have since moved to Phoenix. Maybe that's what it takes to know what I am missing here. I was like a kid in a candy shop! There is a made-fresh buffet with kitchen staff constantly rushing hot dishes out. There were many people lined up for the hot dishes, so I guessing the food is really good. The store is brand new and clean with many busy employees running about. The atmosphere if fun, interesting and upbeat. I can't even scratch the surface on all that they have. From fresh produce, to fresh seafood, Wagyu beef, snacks, noodles, dumplings. etc, etc. I will include photos of the many things that I found interesting. One employee recommended Calbee Roasted Garlic and Miso Chips. I loved them! I also had a Wagyu Misubi roll. It was also very tasty. We loaded up on groceries and brought them back to Arizona with us. Tokyo Central is a great addition to Emeryville and in my opinion, a must try! They carry all the items you expect and more ~ The main difference outside of the size of the store from the ones in Japan is the price. I was on the hunt for dried yuzu for a recipe, and stumbled upon Tokyo Central. It's is an ultra urban Asian market in a prime spot on Bay Street in Emeryville. I love the look of its exterior, with horizontal lines, green accents, and minimalist Asian architectural design. It feels earthy and industrial at the same time. Tokyo Central is unlike any other larger grocery store in the Bay Area. I have never been to Tokyo, but I would imagine that this place is authentically Japanese. There are playful yet descriptive, large and colorful banners and signage throughout the store, showcasing the various selections and departments. I wish I could read Japanese as many signs and products are in the language-which adds to the authentic Tokyo experience. That said, I had absolutely no clue as to where to find my dried yuzu. The selection of Asian items was vast and a bit intimidating. Due to my unfamiliarity with the layout of the store and how crowded it was, I resigned to the fact that I was never going to find the dried yuzu on my own, so I asked a friendly person at the customer service counter for help. She did not have the answer, but she went out of her way to get the answer-which I really appreciated. Unfortunately, they did not carry dried yuzu, so my quest continues. The produce department is quite large and includes uncommon fruits and vegetables that you will not find at most grocery stores. It all looked fresh and well organized, and there is a small organic section. The meat department is large, with a unique selection that includes Harris Farms meats and a dedicated wagyu case. I went in the early evening, so some areas had a slightly picked over look, but there was still plenty left. I am intrigued by Tokyo Central and will plan on carving out at least an hour for a more thorough deep dive on my next visit. We walked from top to bottom in each aisle and only found few items like the sake and beefs were still available. Yes, Yelp fam, I finally tried a second attempt at Tokyo Central in Emeryville. The first attempt was during opening weekend and of course as you probably read, the hype was real. So..we decided to give it some time and come back again when the soft opening/opening weeks were behind us. Unfortunately our trip on an early weekday evening left us feeling that third time may be a charm? We had heard so many awesome things about their hot food section/to-go and ready-made meals. Unfortunately our trip just really missed the mark. All the hot, ready-to-serve foods were basically out and not replenished, nor with the intent that they would be anytime soon. Most of the sushi was picked through, and other items too. We did grab a few fun items like a matcha churro, frozen ramen to try at a future time, corn soup chips, a dessert bun, potstickers, and Tonkatsu. The matcha churro, the kiddo had no notes! My husband mentioned the meat and fish section he would come back for. Maybe the next visit we try during opening or early afternoon before patrons truly arrive! All in all, I think it's amazing to have a Japanese market in the East Bay. They built additional parking at Bay Street on top of the market, and the area seems to continue to be thriving and growing. Maybe just plan the trip wisely? There are outdoor tables/chairs at Bay Street if you want to sit and have your items in-person and enjoy the beautiful weather. Great supermarket that has an expansive hot/cold food bar and of course, Japanese strawberries. My daughter loves the white ones and knows the difference between those vs the American or Korean varieties (both red and white/pink). 1 star off for parking and the rice for the bentos. I give this supermarket a 5 star because it's newly built and so neat inside! Although some fruits were crazy expensive, but some were exotic! I love their sushi selections. I wouldn't considered them as having a lot of varieties but enough for a take out. They had this sushi box READY TO EAT called "Rainbow POKE SALAD" for $9.99. There was a kick to it and sashimi was fresh. There was also a Manager Deal of "UNI" for $12.99, which I think it's a deal due to comparing this price to other places and it was also fresh. I also got a few other sashimi to try and didn't regret it! Out of all the rolls, I chose Their "Futomaki" and surprisingly it was good. I'm picky at sushi rice and they made it pretty good. I was excited to check out Tokyo Central after recently returning from Japan. It was neat to see "DonKi" branded items here along with some of my favorites from FamilyMart and other konbini's. The store opened about a month ago and it's still super popular with a line out of the door. We waited about 20 minutes before being allowed in. Due to the popularity, many of the shelves have been cleared out. Particularly the meat section and the prepared food sections. I was stoked to see some egg sando's there but it doesn't look like they use the legit Japanese white bread like you'd see at 7/11's in Japan. So I decided to pass. Also, the lines inside are just as long as they were outside so be prepared to wait to be able to check out! I hope things eventually reach a "normal" pace where you can visit here and utilize it as a grocery store. Otherwise, it feels a little like chaos at the moment. read more

I have been waiting for the big grand opening hype to die down before checking out this store because I hate crowds and long lines. I am so happy we finally have a big Japanese grocery store in East Bay! What I like about the store are: - free parking at Bay Street Shopping Monday-Thursday 12-2pm! I have been waiting for this place to open. I came on a Monday. to my surprise, this place has its own parking lot above the store. Very convenient! Once u walk in, you see the premium Japanese fruit on display. White strawberries, white dragonfruit, muscat grapes, bright red japanese strawberries, premium melon that was 80 dollars! Then u are immersed in the meat section where u can find cuts of wagyu, pork belly skewers, and thin sliced beef tongue. Wonderful to see this new addition to the Emeryville community. Carpark is available on the roof. Note: there is a QR code to pay for the car parking fees. This is a big supermarket with everything from household items, chinaware, food, bakery, toiletries and there is a little seating area where you can buy food to eat at the tables. Favorite items were the marbled wagyu beef, which was delicious stir fried with onions and Yakiniku sauce. There's also vending machines at the exit doors, with typical Japanese toys. Well, here it is in its third day of operation right after their two-day grand opening. I was hoping coming on Monday might provide relief from the weekend crowds. I'm not the type to wait in line for a grocery store, so they may take my Asian card away. However, my interest was piqued because it's part of the popular Don Quijote supermarket chain. I had been to the ones in Honolulu and Shibuya in Tokyo, so my expectations were pretty high for this store. While there was no line to enter, it was still pretty packed with customers excited by the inventory here. There's 44,000 square feet of space, but compared to Jagalchi in Daly City, it felt rather claustrophobic only in part due to the milling crowds. For example, it was a struggle to see price labels on meat packages because only two people could fit per section due to the shopping carts. However, there was no denying the limitless varieties of food offered here. This was particularly true of the produce section which included many Japanese-specific items like shimeji mushrooms and Tokyo negi (Photo 3). I was surprised how large the liquor section was. The seafood section was hugely popular with items in constant rotation. Unfortunately the takeout section was completely depleted since I was hankering for an egg salad sando. Dropping into Tokyo Central the weekend after opening was quite a busy choice. I don't recommend parking in their crazy lot upstairs, but going around and parking in the lot for the entire space. If you find easy parking the walkway lets you out right next to the business. You'll have to wait in line for access currently and the wait looks longer than it is. We waited about 10 minutes in line and checkout was fairly quick as well for how busy they were. They're a bit more warehousey like a Costco than I expected, but their selection was fantastic and they had an amazing amount of different types of shabu meat to choose from. The service was friendly and helpful and we were able to navigate the shelves pretty well for how busy it was. Overall we'll definitely be back but likely on a weekday. read more

Came for grand opening weekend to check out the hype...should've waited a couple of weeks. Parking was tough. They did have 2nd floor parking lot where you get 90min free parking but that wasn't enough time for this weekend at least since it was extremely busy. There was a huge line to get in, snaking for about 30 -40 minutes. Upon entering, we were greeted by the only staff that talkative and energetic. All other staff throughout were too busy or just didn't want to talk. Store has great signage, is very clean, and good spacing but this weekend it was so packed that it was an anxiety attack everywhere you moved. It was hard to find things since aisles were packed especially the front aisles since the checkout lines leaked into every aisle. There seem to be some good grand opening deals but we didn't find any since the things that we liked were all sold out. After the struggles of moving through the store or finding things amongst the madness, we called it quits and darted waiting in the checkout line. We took turns checking out certain aisles while we waited to be checked out so saved some time that way. Overall seems like a cool place. We'll probably take another visit in a few weeks after the hype dies down some to really check out and see what they have available. read more

The skewers were well seasoned and the meat was moist. Unfortunately the CA roll the rice was mushy (like too much water when it was cooked), while for the unagi rice plate -half the rice wasn't even fully cooked and was rock hard. This is the first Tokyo Central in the East Bay and the second in the Bay Area (first one opened in Cupertino). Tokyo Central is quite popular in SoCal, and aims to offer an immersive cultural / shopping / dining experience. The have both groceries, prepped food (think: ready to cook marinated meat, vegetable set that's ready for shabu shabu), and cooked bento boxes, fresh sushi and sashimi, onigiri, or snacks. The opening weekend - while super busy - was well organized and they have well prepped for their grand opening. Securities guarded the exit doors so that no one could "sneak in" from the exit, and a guard also walked the line to ensure no cutting and that everyone is orderly. Once inside, it wasn't as crowded as I had expected. KUDOS on the crowd control!! Their selection is vast and the store is well organized. There weee plenty of bento boxes to choose from through their onigiri were all sold out :( Overall prices are quite high, and only their special items are decently priced. I was able to check them out during their soft opening and I was so hyped! Everything about this mart exceeded my expectations. This entire spot is 40,000sqft. Luckily everything is spaced out nicely so it's not too overwhelming. And it's super clean. Parking is 90min free and on the second floor of the grocery store. You'll see a sign that says "Grocery Parking" so just make sure to follow that! When you enter, you see fresh produce and everything is labeled so nicely and organized. The signs to specify the meat, seafood, and other sections were a nice touch and BIG! Everything looks hella fresh and there's SO many options of different types of food, with many being imported from Japan. AND I FOUND JAPANESE KONBINI TREATS LIKE COOLISH! The entire staff from start to finish were so nice and helpful too. The vibes are GREAT and I felt like a kid walking around a candy shop. Happy to say this is now my new grocery spot!
