As someone who's frequented this Toby Carvery on multiple occasions throughout the years, I've had a generally positive attitude to towards this place. Unfortunately, tonight's attendance completely ruined that positive outlook.
- Upon arrival, the host had no record of our booking, despite us having a confirmation email for
said booking. This was fine, as the restaurant had many tables available, though the host, instead of showing us to a table, promptly left us with only a comment of sitting on one side of the restaurant instead of the other.
- Taking our seats, we found ourselves waiting over an hour for any service. No staff attended to us to offer us drinks or to take our orders in any way, and we were left somewhat affronted by the lack of service. As cliche as it sounds, other people had come and sat down after us and were being serviced as normal, while we were left sat at our table as though we had never come in and sat down in the first place.
- Since we were getting no service, we had to flag down a waiter so we could order some drinks and ask for some cutlery. They went and got our drinks, though managed to get one of them wrong, and completely forgot the cutlery altogether. In the end, after another thirty minutes or so, I got up to ask a waiter if we could have any cutlery, to which they flagged down the original waiter to bring us some.
- The carvery itself was fine. Food was as to be expected after we finally managed to get some cutlery so we could actually get some food and eat.
- As the other restaurant guests began to filter out and the place became quieter, we were still left with no service. By this point we were astounded; no one had come to ask us about how our meals were, no one came to take our plates, and no one came to offer us dessert. It was if we weren't there! Customers who had come in after us had had entire meals and full service and had left in half the time that we had been sitting there waiting for someone to serve us in any way.
- We were the last customers there. This was not due to us wishing to stay there, but simply because if we wanted anything done, we had to do it ourselves. After finishing our main meals, we sat there chatting for a while, waiting for someone to come by and take our plates so we could ask for dessert or for the bill.
No one came; the staff began to pack away for the night as we sat there like a couple of turnips, ignored and, by this point, thoroughly frustrated. It was ten o'clock and we wanted the bill and to go home; staff packed away their things, the waiters who hadn't bothered to serve us had their coats on as they closed up, and everyone ignored us. I had to go to someone behind the bar to ask for the bill, to which they replied, "Sure, in a moment," as if we hadn't already waited long enough.
The bill came, brought over by one of the waiters and left on our table with no comment or no offer of a card machine. Thankfully we all had money on us to pay, and we left with our hours old dirty plates still sat on the table, still ignored by any staff still milling around.
Honestly, I've never felt so disappointed by a restaurants service before. There are times when service hasn't been brilliant, though this is usually down to one or two things being accidentally forgotten, or a restaurant being busy. All things easily forgiven, with the meal being lovely overall. Tonight's "service" (or lack thereof) was atrocious, and I'm appalled at how terrible it was. There are no excuses for it; the restaurant wasn't busy, other customers were getting served as they should, and all we were looking for was the bare minimum of a restaurants service.
Won't bother returning here, and if I find myself hungry while driving by this way, I'll stop by the Domino's or Subway next door! read more
