I've been searching for Christmas pillows and stopped at this TJ Maxx after visiting a few other stores in the area. Unfortunately, I had the worst experience here and will not be returning. I first picked out a couple sweaters and a pair of jeans, then headed to the fitting rooms with my 6-month-old in his stroller. An older employee greeted my baby first as she saw him in the stroller before she saw me (she said this a couple times before I went back in the changing room) and handed me a fitting room number with no issue. I went into the first room, which is labeled as a family-sized changing room. I had already taken my shirt off in the changing room, when there was a knock on the door. I said, "Someone is in here". I heard her say something in response to me and I could recognize from her voice that it was the dressing room attendant but couldn't make out what she had said. So I put my shirt back on and opened the door. She said, "I don't think you can have your stroller in here". I asked her what the issue is now, since she already let me back here and I explained that my baby can't sit up yet and that I've never had a problem before. She said she'd "go check," and I told her never mind, I would just leave. She then insisted I wait. I made it clear I wasn't trying to steal anything--my stroller only had my baby's blanket in it--which was visible and I pointed at it. She said that's not what she was insinuating. She tried to lighten the situation with a "just stay" in a deeper tone, but it came off wrong and uncomfortable. When I tried to leave and was in the hallway at this point, she either put her foot out or my stroller wheel caught her--I'm not sure which as she was walking backwards and was elderly--but she tried again to stop me from leaving. I told her she needs to move right now as I am leaving. I returned the clothes to her stand and left the fitting room area completely frustrated and singled out. I didn't even feel comfortable going back to shop for the pillows I originally came for. The manager on duty apologized, but the experience was upsetting enough that I won't ever come back to this location. As a new mom getting out of the house and doing some shopping with my baby I felt embarrassed, singled out, and very uncomfortable. I've never been treated this way anywhere else. read more

This TJ Maxx is pretty much the only one in Portsmouth and sometimes it will have some gems, other days it has nothing that interests me. This particular one has a really good house wares department. I feel like there home goods are better than the other TJ Maxxs out here. What's really nice about this particular location is that it's always never busy. I can come in on any given day and check out quick which is nice. read more

This store has been open for a little less than a year now and it's still in good condition. The aisles are free of clutter. The selection of purses, clothes, novelty items, etc. are plentiful. Employees can be found throughout the store. In other words, I didn't have to track anyone down for assistance. My main purpose was to find a sequins shirt for NYE. Well my mission was sort of fulfilled. Nevertheless, I like this location. I visited the jewelry counter to see the deals and their selection of costume jewelry. I'm so glad I did!! They had plenty of deals (sale items). I purchased a set of three sterling silver earrings for under $25. The regular price was $40+. I'd say this was a steal!! That's what TJMAXX is all about...deal steals!! This location is amongst other shops in the blooming area of what used to be Portsmouth's Midcity area. There is plenty of free parking. And the customer service is on point. If you like odd items or just browsing stores to see the same items you may see in your major department stores but the prices are much less...then I suggest you visit TJMAXX soon. We had so much fun in this store. It is so clean and well organized. The staff is so freaking happy and excited about working here. Every worker knows where things are, I had to keep asking for their help. Their attitude is infectious I purchased things I would have never purchased anywhere else just because the employees took the time to help me find things to fit the theme of my room. Yes they asked me a few questions so they could really be assistance. Love them. This lady watches HGTV and knows her THEMES. She was able to suggest decorating phases I should use to get the look I wanted over a few paydays. I will be back. The prices are very reasonable, selectons are good. Love the clothes and home decor options. Parking is excellent and super clean. You will enjoy the shopping experience. Portsmouth is changing for thr better. Mid-town is amazing now. I felt very safe and welcome. It is like walking around in downtown Norfolk. Looks of new shops, little suprised areas with seated grassy areas near the shopping area. If you lived in Mid-town you could walk over to grocery shop and enjoy the stores then eat ice cream in one of the new sitting areas. Great improvement Portsmouth. I will be back. read more

T.J. Maxx is such a mixed bag. Years ago I bought a pair of UFC training gloves at one for $4!! That's about 10% of what they can sell for!! They are a department store, but they're more than that! They have a pet section & miscellaneous snacks with miscellaneous deals, too. Let's see, today I bought a few short sleeve button down collared shirts, a bag of coconut chips, dryer balls, 3oz travel shampoo & conditioner bottles (TSA approved!! SMDH) & some boxer briefs, enjoy the mental image ladies ;) & I got out of there under $80!! Really, the 3 shirts I got should've run me over $100 on their own. There are so many very well priced items at T.J. Maxx, they just may not have the size you're looking for. Their brand name items range from Reebok, Nike, Puma, Under Armour, ECKO, Nautica, Chaps,Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Lucky Brand & Perry Ellis to Timberland, Gold Toe, Van Heussen & Calvin Klein. Very, very poor customer service. I had heard so much about the stores and thought I would stop in to see if they have some shoes. My eyes were bothering me and I couldn't see the size in the shoes I purchased since it was in tiny print. When I arrived home, I realized that the shoes were 2 different sizes. I tried to return the shoes to get it corrected through another TJ Maxx, but was informed that I had to take them back where I purchased them. Today I went back to the same store I made purchased the shoes from and the clerk stated the receipt I had was not the correct receipt. I was in the store just the one time. So don't believe their hype about returns because I experienced first hand on my first visit. Frustrating since I don't live in Portsmouth. I think the clerk did not believe that I was telling the truth about the shoes. Take things back? Like how & when?????? And I want to continue to shop where I am looked at as a liar? That was my first purchase in this store and the very last. Now I know why I should not have gone in the store - not worth my time. And now I have a pair of shoes that are 2 different sizes & out my money. I would have liked to get the other size or get my money back and I didn't get either. And this is the type of store I want to shop at? I think NOT!! This all would not have happened in the first place had the young lady clerk behind the counter would have been paying attention to my purchase instead of the guy behind the counter. I wish I could give this TJ Maxx zero stars. Every time I have been in this store I regret it. One time last month, I was so frustrated I was almost in tears leaving the store and an older woman in the parking lot suggested I speak to the manager Ms. Frye. I could not bear to go back because the rude, nasty talking sales people had jangled my nerves. When I spoke to the managerlater that evening by phone she Begged me to come back to the store on a day she was working to resolve my issue. I did return and Ms. Frye assisted me. Today, I decided to go to the store to use 2 reward certificates I had received with my bill. I asked the cashier Sade if she could check the certificates since I had been told by another cashier on a previous visit I couldn't use them. She said no, she had to ring up my items first. She rang them up and then scanned the rewards but got a code she didn't understand and said they weren't valid. I calmly asked to speak to a manager. The person who came out attempted to call the store office to ascertain how they could accept the certificates since they were obviouslyvalid. When I realized this was going to take some tine, I asked Sade to take 2 items off my purchase and I would use the rewards another time. Sade ADDED the 2 items instead of deducting them. When I politely pointed this out to her she became flustered and after awhile made the correct math calculation. She then began to make disparaging even vicious comments to me when I stated to her that in my time... The custoner is always right. She said No in a nasty tone. Not wanting to engage her, I asked her not to say anything else to me. I took my packages and was leaving the store when A Manager, a man whose name I didn't catch, asked me if I was having a problem. The Problem is with that store, the surly, unprofessional cashiers who need customer service training, a personality transplant that allows them to treat custoners with dignity and respect. I will NEVER Return to that store, Ms Frye. I would rather drive 45 minutes to Va Beach where I have never had a problem shopping. This is a cautionary tale for those who like to shop at TJ Maxx. I have informed the TJMax corporate office of this and other incidents I and my colleagues have experienced at this Awful Awful Store. Shame on you TJMaxx for allowing loyal customers to be treated this way in your store. read more
