Big O of Cortez

Big O of Cortez

(27 reviews)

Like a lot of these reviewers, I experienced a big emergency 2 weeks ago late Friday afternoon just…read moreoutside of Cortez - we were enroute to Moab/Arches for the night from the EastCoast on a tightly-planned 2 week vacation for which we had pre-booked lodging at every goal destination. We completely blew out a tire and got almost immediately volunteered roadside help from a passer-by off-duty Cortez police officer (requiring him 2 trips, family in car, back into Cortez to get additional roadside equipment); made it on the donut spare to Big O in Cortez only to discover the blowout was unpatchable and that our size tire was not in stock. T.L. Shelton at Cortez Big O phoned every Big O and every near-and-far competitor he could think of, and it was looking as if any tire to be found would take until Monday morning to be delivered to Cortez, which would have pretty much torpedoed our entire vacation plan. He'd gone *way* beyond a simple call of duty by that point, but he had one last idea and called a competitor in Durango, FOUND a pair of replacement tires our size, and had them line up an appointment to be on standby to mount those tires first thing the next morning. He then outlined assurances to me that the road from Cortez to Durango was in great condition, and that with great care I could safely drive the 47 miles just barely within the safe range limits of a 'donut' spare. It took a VERY slow and cautious drive thru dusk and nightfall to Durango, but the road gods were with us and we made it. True to their word, "the other" tire company admitted us the instant they opened their doors for Saturday business and had the waiting tires mounted and ready to go within 15 minutes. EVERY thing on the 2-week trip plan went great from the time when our Good Samaritan in Cortez pulled roadside within 5 minutes of our tire blowout. I'm giving Big O 5 stars for the selfless efforts on behalf of Mr. Shelton and the rest of the Big O staff to go way beyond what we could have expected in making long and persistent efforts to get our car back into driveable condition without unplanned-for long delays. As great as the 2 weeks of Utah and Arizona sightseeing were, THIS out-of-the-blue incident is, oddly enough, going to be one of my favorite long-term memories of the trip. Sorry this narrative is so long, but THAT'S how grateful and impressed I am by the help encountered in Cortez that day.
