The crew came here during a blisteringly cold night. We had our choice of seating, as there were not many patrons . We were greeted promptly and served well throughout the night. We had: classic margs, steak , Al pastor, papa , chorizo and birria tacos and queso and salsa with chips. Everything was fabulous. The meat was so tender with very little grease. I have been to Tio's many times before and usually really enjoy! It's better value and a bit more authentic than the other taco options on Liberty, and I like that they offer their tacos a la carte so you can mix and match. Good margaritas too - not too sweet. Unfortunately my lunch here yesterday was disappointing. I came in because I saw recently that they added Goat Birria tacos to the menu and I wanted to try them out. Sounds amazing. The positives - the meat in these tacos are generous, juicy, and tender. Onions, cilantro and lime to go with. However, the birria was really super salty, overpowering any other flavor. It was unfortunately almost inedibly salty. I'm hoping this was a bad batch, otherwise I would recommend just checking the recipe again to ensure they're serving what they expect. I think this has potential to be a really great taco. I also got a side salad which was basically shredded lettuce, diced tomato and green pepper, and a bit of shredded cheese. It's nothing super special but served its purpose and was a nice respite of freshness with the salty tacos. It comes with your choice of dressing, and they have some fun options. I got the citrus vinaigrette which was tasty! I'm still giving 4 stars instead of lower due to my great experiences here before. Usually Tio's is my favorite for tacos on Liberty when I want a more casual vibe. read more

We checked with two different waitresses to get the status of our order and they gave us weak excuses of the restaurant being busy at 3 PM. Not peak lunch or dinner times. The food was so nasty and extremely overpriced. My sister got a chimichangas and it had no beef and the waiter was arguing with her about it and than he started touching her food and saying she need to look before she makes a complaints. ZaHe said he would take her meal of the check and than he only took 3.50$ outta 18$ we had to point it out for him to take the whole thing off. And wym 3.50$ for a guacamole? Two of the tacos had burnt proteins which ruined the taste (yes, I know the difference between charred and burnt). Imagine eating tacos + bits of charcoal as a surprise. My fiancé and I went here last night and it quickly became our new favorite "comfort" Mexican restaurant. The margs are delicious and not overly sweet, the portions are huge, and the flavors were serendipitously tasteful. I noticed there were plenty of vegetarian options too (including the wet burrito pictured below). The service was quick and excellent. I came here on a Tuesday night for dinner. The weather was pretty nice so we sat outside. My initial observations: my chair had food remnants on it and some of the overhead lights were broken. I ordered the steak fajita, and honestly it was not good. It only came with 5.5 strips of steak that tasted like they were slathered in A1 sauce. The steak also came completely well done even though it came out on a hot metal plate. The flour tortillas were cold, the guac was bland, and the iceberg lettuce was not appealing. The rice tasted okay, but it was really watery. For $18, the steak fajitas were way too overpriced. I honestly think Chipotle is better. read more

Where do I start? Well let's start with the atmosphere. The owners are big into social justice and "inclusiveness." So if you are look a certain way or hint that you might have beliefs differently than them, be prepared to be treated poorly or outright disrespected. I was wearing my neck gaiter mask that said "U.S Pride Veteran Hospital Corpsman US Navy." Was told at the that my mask was offensive. I would have to wear something else or they would not seat me. I will not support a business that is all about being inclusive, but is disrespectful like that. Since reopening, Tio's has a new operating model. Instead of traditional table service, you order at a window in the back of the restaurant, and it's brought to your table once ready. It was pretty efficient, and our food was still delivered in "courses" (chips and salsa first, tacos second, dessert at the end) like you would get with normal table service. Our party tried the classic, pineapple, and strawberry margaritas - all of them were amazing! They were made fresh rather than with a mix, and you can taste the quality difference. We started with a bottomless chips and salsa for the table - they have mild and hot salsa options, and they let us try both. (Both were great!) We also tried a variety of tacos (there are a lot available to choose from) - I had the papa taco and a steak taco. Both had good flavors, and the steak was cooked really nicely. We wrapped up our meal with churros for the table. They were a perfect soft texture and served with caramel on the side, and the serving size was great for sharing. read more

I really loved this restaurant! We had a great location by the window so we could watch the passersby. There appeared to be only 2 people working, so it took a bit to place our order, but the food and drinks came out promptly. The prices were good, and all of us loved our food. I also ordered a cucumber margarita, which was delicious! Even though it's a very open space (especially towards the ceiling), it has a nice cozy feel to it. . . at least on a late Thursday afternoon. I have been to Tio's on several occasions in the past year. My most recent visit today was underwhelming. I understand that today was Hash Bash in Ann Arbor, which explained the heavy traffic in the restaurant; however, the service left me extremely disappointed. Our waitress was inattentive - disappearing for long periods of time and neglecting to bring us the items we had asked for. When we needed refills on our salsa and water, it took us all several tries to even catch her attention. At one point, my friend waved at her but she kept walking past us as if she didn't notice. The food was a positive experience as always. We sampled several tacos off the menu. The most delicious ones were the Fish, Americano with Chicken, and the Pollo Verde tacos. Would highly recommend these three. I'm not sure if I'd come back in the near future after the negative service experience I had today. Perhaps the server was new to the job, but in that case, training needs to step up so that customers are not neglected. read more

We used to pick it up for my mother when she was in the hospital - she would order the wet chicken burrito and I'd order plain chips and cheese. My dad has always loved their green salsa. This was when it was just a little hole in the wall Now that I'm an adult and know what good food is, I order the wet chicken burrito every time. This will always be my favorite Ann Arbor restaurant. It was during the pandemic that I fell for Tio's. My husband and I would get carry out tacos and eat them in the car! My favorite are the steak and the American. As a nacho lover, I was afraid to get nachos for carry out but Tio's does this great thing of packaging the chips separately. So I add my salsa and sour cream to the Mach toppings and use the chips to dip in. Always yummy! read more

Went out on a Friday at 10pm for a late dinner and drinks. Waitress was short and just seemed annoyed that she had customers. Actually everyone that worked there seemed over it. Spent some good money but felt pretty skimped. Meh. Over Tio's I guess. Also, read through some other reviews and noticed a common thread. This is pretty terrible "Mexican" food which I agree but the owners response is that they aren't Mexican rather Tex Mex...then maybe you should list Tio's as Tex Mex on yelp...as is now it clearly says Mexican as does your website? read more

Had a nice waiter, but when the bartender brought drinks for the of-age members of our table, he refused to serve one friend, on the basis that he looked "like a kid." Friend has *multiple* forms of identification (state ID, EU ID, student ID) but bartender refused to even look at them, saying that we had to get out. have always liked Tio's before this, but feel very let down on behalf of the kitchen for preparing food that never made it to the table, as well as embarrassed on behalf of our waiter, who had previously verified the IDs. Tio's is to Mexican food as PF Chang's is to Chinese: next level cuisine, and a little pricey but the food, oh THE FOOD is fantastic! Tio's prices aren't as bad as they once were, however, the price point isn't there yet to make this a regular stop for me. They still don't give comp chips and salsa, but suck it up buttercup because the menu items are going to rock your socks. Lunch time stop at noon: We ordered the potato hush puppies to start, horchata to drink and 'featured combo' for entree. The hush puppies were fried balls of potato with a hint of cheese and jalapeno. The dipping sauce was cool and creamy. Some bites were spicier than others but it was a nice appetizer. The combo came with Tinga Taco, Chile Relleno and an Empenada. Tinga is shredded lime chicken. Chile Relleno was cheese, but there was a beef and onion option. The Empenada I ordered was chorizo; but there were three other fillings to choose from. This dish was just perfect. No sauce on the chile relleno to detract from the delicate egg breading and pepper. The taco was stuffed and flavorful, but the empanada was the best. It was beautifully folded with chorizo stuffing and deep fried. The chorizo was perfectly spiced and portioned inside the crispy dough pocket. I was able to sub the blue cheese coleslaw for a side of sour cream and guacamole. The dish also came with the seasonal vegetable, squash. This came as diced, pan-fried, garlic-y, crisp and with a hint of sweet. I have never had such outstanding squash before. Only downside to this meal was the horchata. It was ok, really thin and served in a small margarita or juice glass. Horchata is a beverage, like coke or ice tea - it's for cooling a hot mouth or cleansing the palette. A tiny little glass like that is laughable and a bit annoying. Staff was great. Our waiter was nice and knowledgeable. The bartender had an eagle eye over the place and jumped into action when a customer needed something the waiter wasn't around. Next to try will be their happy hour. I heard something about Tequila Thursday after 10pm. read more

We are new to Ann Arbor and are looking for a great Mexican restaurant. We went on a Thursday evening and had a reservation but there were only a few occupied tables. The service was fabulous, everyone friendly, helpful and personable. We liked they made each Margarita from scratch to order. It was still too sweet for our taste but that seems to be the local preference. Guacamole was the starter and it was great. The mild salsa was very mild and the hot had a nice Smokey flavor with a bit more heat. We ordered beef fajitas, and round of tacos; Al pastor, americano and chicken tinga with a side of rice. The beef fajitas were nicely seasoned and cooked perfectly. We found the tacos to be unremarkable and the rice still a bit firm seemingly with a cooked separately tomato sauce mixed in after instead of all cooking together. A bit disappointing, they have a great location and potential. We had to walk past another Mexican restaurant two doors down that was packed with a long line. I liked the people here and I'm rooting for this place to get it together so there is a line out their door as well! read more

Cinco de Mayo visit! Had to wait 1.5 hours for a table but we knew that would happen. They had a party going on in the street, the street was blocked, live music playing and the best margaritas in town! The staff was so friendly though. Service was excellent! The food was excellent! This is one of my go to places for reasonably priced brunch in Ann Arbor! If the weather is cold, if I'm missing the southwest, if the line is long when friends want to go to Avalon, or I'm particularly craving some filling and deliciously seasoned Mich-Mex classics, you will find me here. I think it's probably the location that has kept me away from Tio's over the last several years. You see, it's located on one of the busiest stretches of Liberty in downtown A-squared just west of the landmark Michigan Theater. Street parking is practically impossible in this section of town and even though there is a parking deck nearby, parking is always a challenge. Today, in the deep freeze of an early January day in Michigan, the wifester and I braved the cold in search of a outstanding enchilada or two. Although I was bummed to learn that Tio's charges $2.50 for Chips & Salsa, the quality of the Salsa here was outstanding as was the companion dish of chopped tomatoes and onions that arrives with the Salsa. Getting on with our entrees, my wife jumped for the Chicken Enchilada Plate while I hopped on the Classic Combo...one 'chilada, a Taco and a Burrito...all nicely stuffed w/ chicken. We were both blown away w/ the quality and taste of our dishes...clearly superior to the many other Mexican joints in our city. Our service was also very good and came off w/o a hitch. Catch me here every single taco Tuesday! My friends and I never failed to pop in every week for their delicious tacos. I usually chose 3 different ones and if I was feeling extra hungry I'd go for a 4th. My favorite is the shrimp taco! Definitely give it a try. Also, the sangria is to die for but it's pretty strong so plan to share with some friends. I love that they have a large collection of hot sauces that they bring to each table so you can try a wide variety. I came to Tio's for a late dinner tonight and was surprised by how full it was. There were lots of people at the bar and at the tables. The hostess told us that the servers were slammed today so we had to wait for about ten minutes for a table, even though some of the tables were open. But we looked at the menu while waiting so it was fine. We started with the beans and cheese dip, which came with chips and salsa. The salsa wasn't my favorite, but the beans and cheese were delicious. I enjoyed the chips as well. I also had one of their famous Wet Burritos with chicken. It was really big and I enjoyed it, and will probably enjoy my leftovers tomorrow even more. The best part of it was the pinto beans, which tasted similar to the ones in the dip, guess Tio's just does a good job with them. I don't think the burrito was anything amazing, but it was satisfying. I also tried my friend's blue cheese coleslaw side, which was interesting. There's a bit of a tangy blue cheese aftertaste which I found to be a bit too much, but that could be because I don't love blue cheese. Our waitress was nice, but seemed pretty frazzled (probably from being slammed earlier?). We had to wait a bit for water and salsa refills, though she did bring out the check quickly. Also, it's pretty loud in there, especially there's a game on, so it can be hard to hear what people at your table are saying. All in all, Tio's isn't anything amazing, but if you're craving Americanized Mexican food late at night and want to sit down to enjoy it, it's worth checking out. read more

Very solid food and good value here. Nice location in Downtown Ann Arbor too. Came here with two other people and we got a variety of plates--nachos, tacos, and a burrito. All were tasty, not super amazing, but a very satisfying meal. We really liked their margaritas, and their mango margarita is a very pretty shade of...mango color. Reasonable prices all around, and only 10 minute wait on Saturday evening. Only two minor negative comments. They don't give you chips and salsa automatically, you have to pay, which seems unusual for a Mexican place. Okay so I have checked in here five times and honestly it is not good. The only reason I have been here so many times is because they have trivia on Monday nights. The food is American. The meat is dry. The margaritas are pretty weak. And for the most part, the food is flavorless. Plus the service is average. The best things to order if you are here, is the guacamole. They make it fresh at the table and its a huge portion. The ingredients for the most part are fresh too. The chips are super salty and usually pretty stale though. In addition, the best tacos to order are the shrimp and fish. These are the only ones that are not completely dry and have some flavor. Oh and chips and salsa are not free, you have to pay for those. The only upside of this restaurant is the large tequila selection. if you are a fan of tequila, you can come here and try a ton of different ones, although it will be expensive since the prices here are really high. read more
