Hubby and I stopped by Tio Colo's to try the famous bocaditos de helado. These were a perfect late night dessert - not too sweet and good size. We tried the dulce de leche and guayaba. The fruit flavor was on the light side and could have been more flavorful. The sandwich part was a fluffy cake like texture topped with a little sugar. I would definitely recommend Tio Colo's bocaditos de helado!

Really cute ice cream store in a strip mall. This was my first time trying a Cuban ice cream sandwich. I chose Guava flavor which was really good. The server was very nice. I look forward to trying other flavors another day.

So this has been on my radar for a while as I have never tried a Cuban pizza before or their speciality ice creams. I am married to a Cuban, but he is essentially a New Yorker having been a NYPD Lieutenant out there for many years. He told me "you won't particularly like the Cuban pizza" as he claims to know me, and he is also not bothered himself eithger about the Cuban style of pizza, preferring other alternatives. He never has ordered it or had it to my knowledge in the 6.5 years I have known him. Any way....... I came today to try both. I ordered the Guava pizza, as I was very curious as to what it was. I have had a Nutella pizza before and it took me a few tries to accept a sweet pizza, (but it did grow on me). The pizza is definitely NOT Italian that's for sure. I enjoyed it, but it is definitely not my fever, or as us Brits say "my cup of tea". There was nothing wrong with the pizza, the service or the establishment, I just prefer a thinner crispier Italian style pizza. From what I can muster Cuban pizza is more like a doughy thicker softer crust, more like a bread, and that to me is stodgy n heavy. I am very glad I sampled it though, and would not be opposed to trying it again, maybe a different one. Incidentally to be noted the pizza is made fresh and took about ten minutes and was piping hot. Then I tried their ice cream, which is a slice of ice cream sat between a sheet pan cake with a light sugar dusted on it and sealed in a nice package. They had load of flavours to choose from (approx 15 I would guess). I tried the coconut one, which was pleasant, but no wow factor for me. Again I would be happy to try another flavour. These are probably a fun way to get a stack for a party! (if you are a fan of course) The lady behind the counter was very friendly and helpful and told me that it was originally her Fathers shop. I love the fact that it is a family business. So if you love Cuban style pizza, and Cuban style ice cream, this is surely your spot. Go try it out.

I heard about this place for a while and was in the area today so I stopped by for lunch. If you're not specifically looking for it, you'll pass right by it. It's on the corner of an industrial style strip mall. It's a small location and there are no tables to sit. It's strictly pick up and take out. I was surprised by that. Would love to see a table or two in the future. Cuban style pizza is not for everyone, but I really like it. I ordered the personal Hawaiian pizza. Bonus points for all the ham they top it with- and it's chopped in really small pieces. Of course I had to try the famous ice cream bocaditos and they did not disappoint. I got the mantecado and the almendra. They're really good. The outer cake portion is dusted with sugar. It was delicious. The woman behind the counter was friendly and the food did not take long to prepare. I don't think I was there more than 10 minutes. It was fresh and the pizza was steaming hot. If I'm in the area again I will definitely stop by to try some of the other ice cream flavors.

I'm absolutely obsessed with the bocaditos de helado (aka Cuban ice cream sandwiches) from this spot. I've been coming here throughout the years, and it always hits. Today I tried the dulce de leche bocadito, which was dulce de leche ice cream sandwiched between two soft cookies dusted with sugar. I'm not doing the cookie portion justice because it's definitely something you gotta try to understand. They serve it tightly wrapped in parchment paper straight from the freezer, so you gotta give it just a few minutes to melt for it to be at it's peak deliciousness. Tio Colo's is located in an unassuming warehouse area in Hialeah, so you may get a little confused/lost thinking you're going the wrong way. Don't worry... you ain't. Plenty of parking out front!

Best Cuban pizza in Miami! I absolutely love their chorizo personal pizza, the crispy crust is what always get me! The personal pizza is perfect for one and it is only $6. Aside from the pizza they also have delicious ice cream sandwich which are $2. I always end up buying minimum 4 ice cream sandwich's and a personal pizza. It's a great spot, very small but perfect. My brother heard great things about these little Cuban "ice cream sandwich" bocaditos. I wasn't too sure what to expect. It was a tiny little shop. Friendly staff. Make you feel at home. The desert was unique and delicious! They have a ton of flavors to choose from. Just wish i had ordered more to take home lol. They also have amazing pizza supposedly, but we already ate so we didn't get it. But i really want to try the pizza next time! I wish i lived closer, but I'll definitely be back when in the area :)

Hidden away next to a hairsalon in Hialeah's warehouse district is a ice cream and Cuban pizza speakeasy. You see a counter, a few chairs, and a door. If you say hi to the sweet Cuban abuela at the counter and peek in, you'll see a pizza oven and a cart of ice cream sandwiches (aka Bocaditos). For the uninitiated, Cuban Pizza is similar to Chicago pizza, with more cheese and a fluffier crust but with the toppings on the pizza rather than baked in. I ordered my usual (yep Hawaiian) pizza, personal size and was sure to ask for extra sauce (and they didn't backcharge). The pizza had plenty of ham, pineapple and of course extra tomato sauce. The crust was fluffier than my usual thin crust but all of the taste was there. The shop is also known for "bocaditos" Ice cream sandwiches, and I ordered an orange and pineapple one. It was more of a sorbet, and not overly sweet, and served on a slightly toasted biscuit (tasted like the "base" of a poptart). Service was excellent for what's nominally a takeout spot. I didn't want to take my food home to avoid washing dishes and sharing with Luna (bad dog dad) and the hostess accomodated, letting me eat there.

TALK ABOUT THROWBACK !! This is a legit Cuban pizza, it reminds me of when I used to do the lines at people's house to get that cheesy goodness folded and an ice cream sandwich. It's so good ! So glad I found this place, the service was outstanding and the quality of the food was great for a very low price. If you're looking for a good Cuban pizza this one tops them all! This is a hidden gem in Hialeah. They serve only one thing which is their amazing ice cream sandwiches. The sandwich consists of a sponge cake with an ice cream filling inside. Recommended flavors are Dulce de leche, Almond, Malta, wow actually they are all good. The ice cream's go for two bucks a pop, once you have one you'll be back for sure. They also have another location in Miami with more items by the way. read more

This is our go-to Sunday spot. I have been coming here for years and I love it the same! This is definitely a hidden gem in Hialeah, as most people describe it. The concept is simple: come in, get your ice cream sandwich, get out. The ice cream sandwiches are all very tasty (my favorite is guayaba) and they cost $2 each. They recently started making Cuban pizzas, too...the best I've had around here. The chorizo and bacon pizzas are a must-try. read more

I had a personal chorizo pizza and a strawberry bocadito de helado. The pizza was really tasty although I would've preferred a crispier crust. Maybe next time I'll specify. I went to Tio colo based on all the reviews. I really do not understand why all the hype is about. I wish I would of know that it's more of a take out place than eating in. That was my first mistake. I would of loved to try the Cuban pizza to compare to others. But the family wanted a dine inside. There is really no place to sit and eat. As for the ice cream bocaditos. I wasn't a fan but the kids liked them. Hopefully, on my next visit I will try the pizza as a take home. read more

If for nothing else, come here for the ice cream sandwiches (they have pizza here too). The bocaditos de helado are insanely good. I had a mango and my friend had a cookies and cream and they were both to die for. I fully intend to come back and try all the flavors!!!! This pizza truly is the best Cuban pizza in town! Tops off Reys pizza and polo norte. The customer service here is also great! They wanted to honor my pizza because they were an hour late on delivery but a normal pizza usually takes this long so I told them to keep it in tips for being so generous. People were raving about this pizza and I've been looking for a good pizza place. I love a good thick doughy crust- which is what everyone was talking about. So i decided to give it a shot. The pizza was ok- it wasn't extraordinary like some people were saying it was. I guess my expectations were very high after hearing it was the beat place they have been to. It honestly tasted like a frozen pizza from the grocery store. However- the ice cream sandwiches were off the hook. Amazing. It was the owners own recipe- i giver her mad props, because they were very flavorful. Customer service was awesome too, very nice people. After checking Yelp for "pastelito" and "most reviewed" I settled on a popular bakery, BreadMan Miami, which was conveniently, if counter-intuitively, housed in Hialeah. I called for an Uber. My driver, Julian, picked me up, and as we left my hotel, he double-checked my destination and, with solicitude in his voice, asked, "Breadman, hmm? Have you been there before?" I told him "no" and that I was trying to hit a few Cuban bakeries before leaving town, to compare their versions of pastelitos de guayaba y queso. Without criticizing my choice, Julian spoke enthusiastically about Palm Springs Bakery. It wasn't like he was selling, so much as that he seemed lost in a dream of baked delights and was anxious to share his reverie. I had no skin in the game, and before I die, I'll have plenty of chances to fulfill my mission - to sample all of the pastelitos sold in the greater Miami area - so I thought, "Sure, what the hell," and changed my destination to Palm Springs Bakery. When I walked into the shop, I knew it was my kind of place: simple and busy, smelling of yeast and sugar and Maillard reactions, its front lined with cases full of still-warm baked goods that fogged the glass protecting them. I quickly found what I'd come for, and then was tempted by things that I didn't know I wanted, until I saw them. Besides my pastelito, I chose a Venezuelan-style tequeño, which is guava paste and queso blanco wrapped in pastry dough, then fried. And because too much is never enough, I also bought a spongy yellow cone-shaped cake dipped in sugary syrup, called a "capuchino." Julian had come inside with me to pick up a snack. I asked if he knew a nearby spot where we could eat our breakfast in comfort (there being no seating at Palm Spring Bakery), and he suggested that we stop next door at La Viña de Aragon. He said knew the owners, and that they wouldn't mind if we ate there if we ordered some coffee. I agreed. The folks at Aragon were accommodating and their coffee was excellent. More about that place in different review. Palm Springs Bakery's offerings were good, but not great. My pastelito was delicious, tasting of butter and tropical fruit, but its pastry was damp and tough, likely made so by its time in the sauna. The tequeño was nicely-prepared, but it wasn't my favorite thing, as, in my opinion, guava paste didn't help the plainness of the queso blanco, as I'd hoped it might. The morning's treat was the capuchino, which looked delicate but was as dense and sweet as rum baba or your heavy-handed aunt's tres leches. As such, it made a wonderful accompaniment for Aragon's strong cortadito. I should also note that capuchinos contain no coffee. They're called capuchinos because of their resemblance to the hoods worn by Capuchin monks, and their syrup's flavored with cinnamon, lemon, orange, and anisette. You'll find them wherever Cuban pastries are sold. Palm Springs Bakery has been a neighborhood fixture for decades, and, for my money, it's just ok. I think it's one of those places that you love if you grew up loving it.
