Walt's is a pretty big hobby shop, with a wide variety of stuff, including RC cars and planes,…read moreplastic models, model rockets, and lots of random supplies for making cool stuff, including paints, balsa, dowels, glues, etc. And as big as it is, there's an even bigger space out back with an RC car track, a crawler track, and even an extra meeting room. That's where Walt's really shines -- long after the posted hours, they open the space to all sorts of local hobby groups. I've been there with a rocket club in the back room, RC cars going on the track, and yet another group up front, meeting in the actual hobby shop part. The staff is super-friendly, and willing to help out and offer suggestions for whatever kind of project you want to take on. If you need hobby stuff, this is a great place to go in the Syracuse area.

There was a display layout running by the door and it was fun to watch a Big Boy snake through the layout with a long train. Note that they don't have any wooden (Brio/Thomas) trains in stock, though they did have some O gauge Thomas train sets. Since I didn't have a list of things I needed, I was most just browsing. The owner was very pleasant as I rattled off a list of one-off items and helped me locate what I was looking for. We discussed custom runs for a bit, as well as the the future of the hobby. He clearly knew his stuff, and watching him assist some new modelers with simple, direct answers without an up-sell attached was refreshing. There is a dearth of good full-service hobby shops these days, and yet this one manages to rise above. I highly recommend it.

Most of them simply skulk around in hopes of either avoiding you or act like their waiting for you to steal something. The manager is LAZY! I was looking for a specific item and instead of showing me ~ points down the way & sends me off to search. Thankfully I found a "unicorn employee" who actually helped me locate the item. Their "retail 101" MO doesn't allow them to return certain items (5 for $1) within the time frame w/ accompanying receipt without me having to explain a viable way to do it to get my money back & account for their inventory. (Crackerjack Manager was involved in that one too.) This store would be better off stationing snipers throughout & using a self checkout system. Better yet ~ bring Micheal's back & go to the mall. You can continue to disappoint all the crafters on Sunday but at least leave them w the option of Target or JoAnn's.

Since 2003, their owner Tim has worked on my trains installing DCC (digital command control) decoders and other maintenance work. In fact, when in the beginning I would go over to his house and he would do his work there. Over the years, he has opened up several shops and the business has slowly grown. It isn't the largest of train stores, but they don't carry any of the low-end, junk stuff that will break easily. I have heard that they are moving again to Greece, which ironically will be just a mile or so from where I used to live when I was in the Rochester area.

And prices were pretty competitive. They had brochures for the Syracuse Rocket Club, 60 miles away! I had stopped by for a few minutes on my way south, and the staff was super-friendly to this rando walking in the door. It looks like I have yet another reason to go down to Binghamton a bit more often!
