Great wedding venue. Beautiful and service rocked. Food was awesome. Staff was great.

The name of the venue and location caught my attention after receiving our wedding invitation:  To be held at the Tin Roof Barn in White Salmon, WA.  Wow!    ATMOSPHERE: From a wedding guest's standpoint, this place is beautiful!  Located off a rural road in southern Washington near the Columbia River and Oregon border, we were surrounded by lush rolling hills, pines and an apple orchard.  Parking is right up front of the venue with the bride and groom's quarters thereafter.  Lawn games were available including horseshoe and corn hole.  A stone pathway lined with manicured gardens connects to the open-air pavilion where cocktails were served and hors d'oeuvres passed.  The ceremony was to the right of the barn with the apple orchard as the backdrop.  And, the star of the show, the barn, is where the reception was held.  Fret not as there wasn't a dirt floor, stables or bales of hay.  The barn's floor is polished cement with a built-in bar, soaring roof and chandelier lighting; an ingenious mix of rustic and modern.  Restrooms are behind the barn.   EXPERIENCE: The parking lot is a grassy field but due to vehicular access many spots were bald with dirt, so our shoes got very dusty walking from the car to the venue.   Lawn games weren't too popular as the majority of us got our drank on!  LOL.   The pavilion, with its faux fireplace, was a nice spot to have pre-ceremony time as guests mingled, drank, ate and conversed.  My only complaint is that there was a long line for the bar due to only two bartenders working.  I was also turned away twice for drinks as I waited for the crowd to subside before ordering prior to the ceremony and reception.  Really?   Being a September wedding, the weather was perfect with no jackets needed but it was very hot during the ceremony as only half of the guests were shaded by the barn's shadow.    Table setup inside the barn were on rectangles of 10 with a mishmash of different chairs.  It was difficult to hear what people were saying over the mic as the volume was so low.  Dinner was family-style, my least favorite dining option.  Courses were dropped off one by one which is fine, but the entrée and accompaniments should come together.  For example, the salad came out first, fine.  But then the side of veggies come out by themselves so people were starting to nibble.  After a few minutes the rice comes out.  After the rice cooled down the chicken comes out, with the steak following.  It was like eating at a teppanyaki joint but with cold food.    FOOD: Crab Cakes - These were passed as hors d'oeuvres prior to the ceremony and they were really good.  But they only came out once (to us anyway). Snacks table - A cornucopia of little bites were available in the pavilion including cheeses, hearts of palm and crackers.   Salad - Our first plated course which I passed on as I wasn't into the mix of leaves.  I'm more inclined to romaine or green leaf.   Veggies - I honestly can't remember what exactly was served but they were good!   Rice pilaf - That's what was stated on the table menu but it was more of a risotto as it was super sticky, mushy and low on flavor.  Bleh.   Chicken - Simply roasted and lightly seasoned.  The piece I had was on the dry side.   Steak - Easily the tastiest meal of them all, drizzled in a savory chimichurri sauce.  It was so good we asked for more.   After dinner was dancing but the DJ's music was so soft that it didn't give you (or me, anyway) the excitement of being on a dancefloor.  The bar stayed open till the very end with the two bartenders providing friendly and quick service.   OVERALL: We have similar venues on Maui and these guys are right up there with the best of them. read more

We were so happy to see our friends get married at Tin Roof Barn and it was a special occasion for the barn too. It was their first time, apparently, as we were told. And as we soon found out. The google maps address is useless. We ended up circling around White Salmon until we called for help. All the groomsmen actually arrived late because they followed google maps too. This GPS mix-up is not necessarily the barn's fault but it's a key piece of information for the venue to know. We got there early to help with setup, etc. It would have been nice to be greeted by someone from the property. Typically this person walks out and announces himself/herself. Every now and again they usually police around and check on things or reminds you not to break rules like put tape on the walls. Heck, just say something. But instead it was confusing because the owner/coordinator didn't identify herself / himself and we just walked through pockets of people setting up things in different places. Who was the owner? We all asked each other. Who is actually working here and is in charge to help with our questions? The bathrooms are awkward. To use the restroom you have to walk through the entire length of the dining hall in the barn. Or you have walk down the aisle during the wedding ceremony. It would make so much more sense to carve a pathway along the back side of the barn so people can use the restroom discreetly. When little one is whining and crying with a poopy diaper do you want that featured in your wedding video as you exchange vows or cut the cake? Because there's no way to be discreet and I felt so bad for guests who bumped their way through to the restrooms. The ceremony was beautiful. He kissed the bride and the music blasted and the crowed cheered. The entire party started inside the barn to start the dinner celebration while all the guests followed behind. When the bridal party entered, the kitchen staff simply said coldly, "We are not ready for you." Thank goodness the family helpers took over and didn't take that for an answer. Later the kitchen ran out of plates for the buffet. And and they never refilled the coffee for over an hour. Picture 100 thirsty, cold, hungry people crowded around the buffet trying to be polite. Eeeks. And it was way too cold. Way way way way too cold. The barn is a barn so we don't expect luxury threads. But we didn't expect to freeze ALL NIGHT LONG. Every single guest ran back to the car so they could put on jackets because it was so cold inside during the reception. Why are there no space heaters? I mean, everyone and their grandma (literally) is bringing out the puffer jacket while raising their champagne toast. The bridesmaids are wearing men's jackets. People brought blankets in for grandma. How is Tin Roof going to manage this as the weather gets even colder and colder? The barn is rustic and the chandeliers are romantic. The outdoor fireplace is cozy. The signage on the side of the road is easy to spot. The adjacent house for the bridal party is totally perfect if just a little bit small. The outdoors bathrooms are so new that the recently installed baby changing table still has the instructions for assembly inside. We loved the wedding and it was a beautiful location. But the venue was a hassle. I'm sure as they gain more and more experience doing events here they will work out these kinks. read more

I give the Tin Roof Barn 2 stars because it is so beautiful but that's the only reason. The staff was very hard to work with and I am sad to say I would not recommend anyone getting married here. I would recommend having your contract handy and make sure you are on the same page with the owners- they were always trying to add things to the contract on the day of the wedding that were not spoken about beforehand. Extremely frustrating!!!! Oh, and don't leave a speck of trash- they'll charge you! read more

We had my daughters wedding at this venue after checking it out almost 2 years ago. We signed up early and the changes and improvements made to the venue over the next 20 months were outstanding. Wedding guests commented "It was the best wedding they had been to". The site support person kept on top of everything. The caterer (Hood River Inn) was exceptional and having worked at this venue before, had cleanup down to a fine art. We were prepared for bad weather but thankfully it never appeared. The wedding outside was beautiful with 2 deer eating just a few feet away from the wedding ceremony. The barn interior was set up for the reception and looked great. I will start off by saying that this venue has a lot going for it. Overall, the venue is beautiful and very well kept and maintained and is well decorated. They market this venue as a place that holds up to 200 guests, which is accurate, but they only have enough tables/dishes/etc to accommodate 150 guests. Anything else you must rent yourself, an they do not let you choose matching items. This venue would have been an amazing wedding venue, however it is unfortunate that the owners are very disorganized, unprofessional, and micro managers. As a wedding coordinator, I have decided that I will not coordinate any further weddings at this location due to the owner, Betsy. This venue is VERY strict with their many rules and will fine you for very minor things. Rehearsal is limited to one hour with the venue and is not flexible for time (we were told we could do rehearsal no later that 4:00 pm, which is tricky with people working). Betsy was there to greet us at 4:00 pm and make sure that we knew we were to be out by 5:00 pm and not a minute later. Her initial vibe was not friendly and welcoming, but it seemed that we were a bother to her and that we needed to be out as soon as possible. We received constant reminders starting at 4:45 that our time was nearly up. The contract says that you have the venue at 10:00 am, however you don't actually have access to the barn until about noon. The entire time we were doing set up, throughout the wedding, and during cleanup, we were being micro managed by Betsy. Our kitchen crew had a terrible time dealing with her and she treated them very, very poorly and unprofessionally. "Rules" were not listed in the rules we had been emailed prior or within the contract, yet Betsy would tell us that these rules were "common sense". Rules such as no one under the age of 18 handling the dinner plates were not disclosed to us until Betsy found out that the family had hired younger, but responsible family friends to bus tables for us that actually work as bus boys. Betsy chose to micro manage and hover our caterers and their kitchen staff most of the evening, especially when it came to clean up time and washing dishes. There are no staff on site to take care of typical venue staff duties such as emptying trash bins (you are expected to haul your own trash and replace all trash bags throughout the venue), dishes, and some other clean up duties. As a wedding coordinator, I have honestly never seen a rules or clean up list that was so long and meticulous, yet very disorganized and confusing. There are AM and PM venue managers that walk around and are available to answer any questions, but also watch you the entire time and make sure you're following the said rules. That seems to be their only job. I have never been involved with a wedding venue where the owner has been so rude to us and those helping us perform duties such as set up, clean up, and kitchen duties, or a venue that has been so poorly organized and truly unprofessional. I would absolutely not recommend this venue to any bride or groom. The price that they ask is not worth the stress and chaos caused by the owners, especially for a day that is meant to be joyous and celebratory. This venue needs to loosen up and get their contract and rules in order so that brides and grooms are well aware of all of the rules and requirements when they book the venue in the beginning. What a wonderful venue! I went here for a friends wedding and I wasn't sure what to expect. I'd never been to a barn wedding but now I can see why they are catching on. I stayed in Hood River and the bride and groom had a bus service that was arranged by the venue (so smart!). The venue itself totally lives up to the website. The place where the bride and groom were married had beautiful views of Mt.Hood and there was a great covered area where cocktail hour was held. Plenty of shade and there were even some games out to play! Who doesn't love cornhole. After the pictures were taken we went into the Barn which was beautiful. The tables and chairs matched the personality of the barn and gave everything a very rustic but comfortable feeling. I really liked the bar that was setup and the Huge wine barrels which added to the ambiance. As the evening progressed I went outside w my date and sat next to one of those in ground fireplaces. It did get a bit chilly outside (it's the NW!) but they had blankets outside as well as the fireplace to cut the chill. The barn has slight cracks in between the boards and this really made it beautiful to see at night! Strongly recommend! Everyone had a blast-what a great idea! read more

We had our daughters wedding here August 12th. Yes, it was the PNW weather and an unusually hot day but all survived. We were fortunate to have brought fans. We used the house for getting ready then brought them over to the barn. Really helped-always remember,it is PNW! The restrooms for guest are great. Large and clean. The venue is very clean and picturesque. Having the unique tables and dinner ware makes the wedding unique with the barn chandeliers. Be sure to READ all the rules. There are many and strict but a phone call is best to finish up any questions. We had a full bar and the set up is great for this. Highly recommend Sara at White Buffalo. Dinner was family style and Celilo and super. We had nothing but "best wedding" we have ever been to from family and friends. Breakfast the next day at Bette's in Hood River is a great way to catch up and say good-byes too. read more

My husband and I were married at Tin Roof Barn on August 5th, and I must say, had an incredibly perfect day and overall experience with TRB. I felt compelled to offer some thoughts after reading the current negative reviews. I coordinate and manage corporate events globally for a for a living, but have also coordinated hundreds of weddings in my years in the business. To that, my perspective may be slightly different, but hopefully this will be helpful. First of all, what a location...a stunning and immaculate venue close to all the activities of Hood River! Upon checking in, my sister and I got settled in the Vigus House greeted with coffee already brewed, and light snacks to keep us fueled for the morning of getting dolled up. After the ceremony and dinner it actually took a while to get folks dancing because everyone was so enamored with the scenery, the fire pit, and relaxing in the Adirondack chairs with a glass of wine. It was an amazing day, and we feel so lucky to have been married there. So a few logistic thoughts...similar to many other couples, we also had a fair amount of décor, all of our centerpieces, and other touches to place around the property. We were provided full access at 10am per our contract, although were asked to just not set anything on the tables quite yet until the set up was finished, but that went very quickly...no worry, we just dove into place cards, kid's table, family photos on the hutch, etc. Keep in mind though, that I was not a part of any of that set up as I had an amazing Day of Coordinator managing these elements for us...a MUST for this venue...more on that soon. And trust me, as a planner, it was hard for me to let go of overseeing the details, but hey, I was in the Vigus House drinking coffee and getting my makeup done! Kelly and the venue make it very clear throughout the planning process that they are not event coordinators, they are providing the venue, the many things that come with it if you choose to use them (ceremony chairs, beautiful dining tables, china, glassware, etc.) You are renting a space, the amenities that come with it, and it was crystal clear ahead of time what was and was not included in our contract. You are not renting a set up staff for your own items, a clean-up crew, folks to bus your tables, etc. That is what hiring professional FULL-SERVICE wedding vendors to help execute your day is for, and we planned accordingly. You will not be successful at this venue if you do not have a person assigned solely to pre-planning and day of coordination that has been involved in all the elements and details from the time you book the venue. You will not be successful if you are having your friend cater the wedding (who does not do this professionally for a living), or your bridesmaids or family members assigned to bus your tables. You will not be successful if you plan your wedding in May, in Oregon, and expect it to be warm at night in a rustic, un-heated barn. You will have an amazing day if you rely on professional vendors (Kelly has a list to share) come together and do what they do best, and that is to execute weddings. Vet your vendors carefully, (there are a lot of folks that think it would be "fun to be a wedding planner because it was SO fun planning my own wedding!!") Get everyone on the same page. Bring them out to the venue ahead of time to get a lay of the land (there are uniqueness's of the layout that I can see would be very challenging, especially for caterers), but pros will have a great game plan! Work with them on a Run of Show for your day, and share that with Kelly ahead of time. Include your day of coordinator on all your emails with the venue. Be ORGANIZED with any do it yourself touches that create an awesome uniqueness to weddings. Make your day at TRB amazing by taking the beautiful venue for what it is, a gorgeous and well-equipped venue at which to host a wedding. We were married at Tin Roof Barn this August, and I think we were one of the first couples to secure this venue (it just opened for business this year). We were extremely thrilled about it - the venue is gorgeous, very original and beautifully styled. Between the original barn, vintage china, beautiful bar, wine barrels, fire pit, lawn games, etc everything in decor was amazing and our guests loved it. If you are looking for a "country chic", this is probably it, ASSUMING you are willing to deal with the negatives... Before I list those out I want to note that the venue is NOT cheap and as far as the experience I'm comparing it to other comparable venues where many of my friends have gotten married over the years. 1. The management is extremely unprofessional. Passive aggressive is the best way to describe the communication style. Kelly was extremely pleasant upon the venue tour and booking, however as more stress had piled up on her closer to the summer - the tone had changed. All of a sudden she was sending mass emails with pages on pages of Q&As (more on that later), arguing that things were included in contract that were not, not responding to questions when she disagreed with my plans, and not being flexible at all on anything. Needless to say having to deal with that a month before wedding would be stressful for any bride. 2. Rules.... they had so many rules... many of them were NOT communicated upon venue visit, or as a part of the contract. For example, we were required to hire professional cleaners to be there the entire time of the event. This was not made clear until 2 weeks before the event and when I asked Kelly if this is something she could arrange for us (for an additional fee) she simply didn't respond. Another rule of not removing extra tables (we had a smaller wedding about 100 people, leaving 5 tables in the barn empty), Kelly had unwillingly agreed to remove 3 tables after some back-and forth, HOWEVER the day of the wedding, extra tables were not removed and the venue manager wouldn't even want to talk to us about it. Another example is finding out they will not remove ceremony chairs (there are 150 we only needed 90), a week before the wedding and having to have multiple phone calls with Kelly and wedding coordinator to resolve the issue. 3. Endangering the guests. Now the craziest rule is not being able to leave cars at the venue overnight. At all. Which we were told at 10PM at night as we were boarding the shuttle after our wedding. The venue manager cited "liability" and forced everyone to take the cars back to Hood River (5 mile drive on dark windy road). Which needless to say encouraged people to drive who shouldn't probably have. This was just plain dangerous and disrespectful. The rule was not in contracts or any of the emails. There was no wedding the day after, so leaving the cars overnight wouldn't have caused any issues. 4. Customer service. Again - just plain bad. Example, we got to the venue at 12:45 (check in is at 1pm) and were forced to sit in our car until 1:05 as the venue manager wouldn't let us even come outside or drop the bags inside the house. As a nervous bride on the day of - imagine sitting in your car for 20 minutes not being able to do anything. What a good start to the day. What hotel or venue not have common sense to let their customer check in 10-15 minutes early? To sum this up - the venue is worth checking out if you have your heart set on the style they offer, as there are not many other options in Portland area. And if you fall in love with it. and don't mind paying extra for the design knowing you won't get a good service - hire a professional full time wedding coordinator ASAP and have her confirm every single detail and rule FAR IN ADVANCE. This way you don't have to deal with the management and will save yourself some nerves and surprises the month/day of. Best of luck! read more
