Now this tour may not be for everyone, as the title of the tour alludes to.. but if you don't mind the random swear word and aren't easily offended, you'll be like me... cracking up for 3 hours straight. But beneath the gruff exterior was the sweetest guy that seemed genuinely interested in sharing his culture, stories, and amazing food with everyone! We started off at a pizza joint where we got a slice of pizza and an arancini ball. I expected the pizza to be good... and it was fantastic. But I am not a huge fan of arancini and this one had peas in it... also something I am not a huge fan.... But hey, I was on a food tour so I was going to try everything! Thank goodness I did, because this arancini was the stuff of dreams. How in the world could something be THAT much better than what high end Italian restaurants advertise? The last time I had an arancini ball was at a restaurant in Hawaii that won "best Italian food in Hawaii".... And it was only so-so. This arancini ball would make me fly 5,000 just to eat it again! Next up was a deli sub, a coffee shop, ravioli, a pastry shop and lastly an affogato (or gelato if you didn't want coffee that late in the day). The tour is inexpensive ($5) and the house is gorgeous, with period furnishings mixed in with modern recreations. I would presume that the tour groups are typically small because it's not one of those "must-see" locations. Even so, it's right next to the Common (across from the Frog Pond), just a couple hundred feet from the State House so the location is very easy to find. Take the T to Park Street, for example, or park in the garage under the Common. The tour itself was led by a very friendly guide. Most of the tour seemed to focus on architecture or, more specifically, how the home changed over the years. I was not entirely interested; what usually drives me to visit a historic house is the person (or people) connected to it. In this case, I heard very little about William Hickling Prescott (a well-respected historian who was nearly blind) - up until the end. Inexplicably, there also was a focus on the American Revolution and how Boston was made up of landfill (neither aspects were relevant to this house). My guess is they were catering to the out-of-towners. Ultimately, I wouldn't call the Prescott House a hidden gem. But, it's worth a visit for folks that don't mind taking a few steps off the Freedom Trail (after all, there's more to Boston than a red line).

We are highly interested in learning all there is to know about different points of view and aspects of the Italian Mafia. Last fall we took a bus around Chicago while visiting the city for a hockey tournament and took a Mob Tour there. The Boston Mob Tour we attended yesterday for our son's 15th birthday was absolutely off the charts on every level and far surpassed the one we had taken in Chicago. We arrived at 9:45am for a 10am start, and to say that we lucked out by getting Mr. Michael Romano as our Tour Operator would be an understatement. We were greeted in Mr. Romano's first-class immaculate Suburban with plenty of room. We had the first tour of the day and luckily again enough for us, we were the only ones for this tour time. Thus, we held it privately, and felt like VIPs and were treated like such. Mr. Romano served as our photographer and took souvenir photos that was so very much appreciated. The rest of the tour was absolutely a blur. Mr. Romano was fascinating and endearing. He navigated around the city easily, and he felt like an old friend telling us everything about South Boston and the Irish mob and then hitting the North End, and to be quite honest, I was really sad having to say goodbye at the conclusion of our tour. I should also note that we live in Central Massachusetts. Thus, Boston is only about 35 minutes away. The word; "tourist" is not something I would throw around when referring to us visiting Boston and going on this tour at all. My group of 9 met with Ben on 8/26 (after he was kind enough to reschedule with us since our original date was a bummer weather day). Ben was extremely thorough in his tour, was full of laughs and we saw some outstanding historical sites.
