We completely understand the no-refund policy if the site were to remain vacant, but that is not what happened. They re-rented our site to another family and still refused to refund us a single penny. In other words, they collected over $300 from us AND another $300 from the next family for the exact same site and dates. This is nothing short of dishonest and greedy. I could have accepted losing my money if the spot went unused, but profiting twice off the same campsite is unethical and unfair. I will NEVER visit this campground again and will warn everyone I know to avoid it.

camped here in mid june for 3 nights…read more first off location - right off lake michigan, maybe 50 feet. its so calming to here the light waves hit the shore at nighttime. for the most part there is tree line between the sites and the lake but there are benches throughout the site where you can view the lake - really nice for the sunrise and sunsets. the sites them self were quite large compared to the sites ive been to through the years. we were able to easily park a SUV, set up our tent, have a picnic bench, and a fire pit with no problem. another large vehicle and tent would have fit the site. a majority of the sites had campers parked at them. a majority of the sites contained electrical outlets - 20 and 30 amp receptacles the amenities were outstanding. the bathroom/shower area in the middle of the site appeared to be brand new or very recently renovated. the bathrooms were cleaned daily and the showers actually had hot water and private stalls with lockable doors. the site also had a volleyball beach court, teatherball, and basketball hoop near the beach. the rangers sold wood and ice and also had gear for the sporting events that could be used. i did not see a downside to this site. the nearest town was at least a 20-30 minute drive so we felt like we were away from life aside from the occassional semi truck that would speed down the nearest county road.

Lake Michigan is beautiful! The parks is well kept up!…read more As far as the campground, itself... Most sites are just grass, and many are not even close to being level. For some reason, they let tall weeds grow 5-6 feet at the lakefront.... Sitting down, you can hear the lake, but not see it very well. Not sure why....? Bring an extra extension electrical cord. Remember, no water hookups, so fill up on your way in. Site 33, does NOT have unobstructed view of the lake, as tenters set up directly between the lake and site 33. "Great" playground for the kids.... But the screaming gets old quickly! And take extra caution, because kids were "racing" alongside our vehicle on their bikes! And so, if you are coming for some quiet time.....don't. And, they installed some "bell/chime" for the kids.... Super annoying! The swimming beach is rocky by the shore. May want some water socks. Shower and toilet facilities are nice! Summary: Beautiful, well maintained park, but if you want a quiet retreat, go elsewhere.

Each time we encountered staff (from the reservation phone call to check-in to a stop in the office for ice) they were friendly. The campground itself is pretty small and seems to be new. There isn't a lot of shade or privacy here but once the trees fill in, they'll offer more cover. There is a small office onsite that opens at 8a and offers snacks, ice and firewood for purchase. There is also complimentary coffee which was nice. We were told there was a cell phone booster at the office but we had a REALLY hard time getting service, even with that. One-stall bathrooms are available and they were insanely clean (and air conditioned!). Showers are available (a $2 donation is requested) but when my husband went to use them Sunday morning they were either closed or someone was hogging them for over 20 minutes . This was before the 8a office open time so it's possible they were just closed. There is a man-made water pond with inflatables for the kids. We don't have children ourselves so we stayed pretty clear of that and the nearby playground. Yard games are offered for guests as well but we didn't use them. They have an area for "dog exercise" but it's not that big and it's very close to other campsites - not totally sure what the purpose is but it's a nice gesture. The campground was very quiet when we were there - not even half full. Between the heat and being the weekend before the 4th, I'm sure that had something to do with it. We did notice they had a handful of permanent sites here. We would definitely camp here again.

Boot Lake Recreation Area is wonderful park on the shores of Boot Lake…read more There's a hiking trail, beach and swimming area, as well as a campground. We recently stayed in the campground, which was great. Their sites are large and offer plenty of privacy. We were in spot #26 (there's only one loop of camping spaces, so it's definitely on the smaller side) and it was a long campsite with our trailer nestled at the back. We had tons of privacy with a canopy of pines overhead. Each campsite has a fire pit and picnic table. There aren't hookups but they do have clean and well maintained pit bathrooms (no showers or plumbed bathrooms). Like most campgrounds, they ask that you purchase your firewood within 10 miles of the campground, which was easily done. We purchased a huge load for $20 at a nearby house. The lake itself is gorgeous (so clear!) and we enjoyed kayaking and swimming. We stumbled across a rope swing and had fun swinging into the lake. There's a hiking trail that seems to go around the entire lake. We took it about 1/4 of the way before turning around but had we had more time would have made for a fun (long!) hike! One of our favorite campgrounds thus far in Wisconsin! Get to it!

Enjoyed a three day weekend of camping at Hartman Creek and loved every minute of it…read more We stayed in site 12, which was perfect. It felt secluded with enough trees and undergrowth that we couldn't see our neighbors. There are pit toilets located throughout the park as well as plumbed toilets and showers in a central location. I exclusively used the plumbed toilets and found I never had to wait for one, which was nice. There is a camp store where we were able to pick up some memorabilia and they have a self-serve wood shed where you can purchase bundles of wood and bags of ice. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire ring, both of which we made use of during our stay. The park itself has lakes, creeks, and over 10 miles of trails. We stuck to campground walks on our most recent trip but have been there previously for day trips where we enjoyed a lovely walks. The campground is beautifully wooded (both deciduous and tamaracks) which is our favorite sort of camping atmosphere. The campground hosts were welcoming and spot on to ensure that all sites are clean and ready for their next guests. Everyone who worked there ensured our stay was as lovely as possible. Get to it!

Tons and tons of outdoor fun can be found right here at Hartman Creek State Park and the surrounding areas. It is not that far of a drive from the Chicago Area (about a 4.5 hour drive). If you go up here in the middle of the summer of course there are going to be a good number of people here. Fortunately it is not going to be as crowded as a Devil's Lake or Starved Rock, which automatically give it an A plus rating in my grade book!

Stop in here for a breathtaking view of the Peshtigo from one of the picturesque foot bridges that criss cross the numerous islands and side channels and the entrance of Swamp Creek into the Peshtigo. The islands themselves have quaint little cabins that can be used to protect your food from the insects and the elements during a summer picnic, party, or family reunion. There are numerous grills and firepit/grills with chimneys. These things are so cool! The park looks like it should be teaming with trout because it is home to every type of prime trout habitat. Within 100 yards there are rapids, riffles, pools, runs, pocket water, sand and boulder structure, timber, and more. However, I have yet to ever see much less hook into anything. But it is nice to enjoy such a beautiful scene. There is a trail that connects this park to Goodman Park. Be careful to go left when nearing the beaver dam, as the trail skirts the damn, and it is treacherous if you are in a hurry.

We reserved a site at Scheffel's Hideaway Campground based on a comment from a camping acquaintance…read morethat the area was beautiful, friendly, and cooler than average. Since we had never been to that part of Wisconsin, we decided to give it a try. We've been full-time RVers for 14 years and can honestly say this is our favorite spot out of at least two or three hundred other campgrounds including everything from boondocking to resorts. The grounds are immaculate, as are the restrooms and two laundry rooms, which are handicapped friendly. The roads, while unpaved are of a fine shell or gravel and hard packed so these are easy to traverse using a walker. There are miles of popular, well-kept walking/bicycle paths nearby going from Point Rawley to the north, past the park and on to Manitowoc to the south. The owners of the park, Tammie and Paul, love the park and are working tirelessly at making it more beautiful every year. There is a lovely pond, lots shrubs and flowers as well as bat houses, bird houses and feeders (we watched goldfinches as we ate dinner several times), whimsical decorations large and small scattered throughout which are changed with the seasons. A number of sites have shade, and most of those without full grown trees have young trees about 15 feet tall or so and will provide more shade every year. Guidelines for the park are clear and reasonable: guests are asked to respect the space and people which is of course, simple common courtesy. All-in-all, this is is our idea of the perfect combination of a natural and well-kept park and friendly people. We are looking forward to our next, longer visit next year. Some of the best cabins Wisconsin has to offer! We've stayed here 3 times in the full service…read morecabins, twice with our 2 full sized dogs. Ann is a great host. She takes great care of the cabins and always has great suggestions when you ask her about anything local from food to activities. The property is great for walks and there's some horses and donkeys to check out too. Our dogs always feel at home on the ranch. We love to ride ATV trails and Spur of the Moment has trail access. You ride from your front door to anywhere you like in the area, no trailering. On our last trip we brought a side x side and all the great trails permitted our lager machine. All of the meals we ate out we did by riding our machines to and Ann supplied us with maps so we knew where we were going. The trail system has so many local and long distant places to go to it's good for beginners as well as veterans. Last thing that we've always enjoyed is the other guests. The Ranch is not only good to ATV'ers it's VERY horse friendly. On a busy weekend you can have all types of guests and on every trip we've done it's never mattered what you're into, people are just friendly. It's flat out relaxing.
