Looking for a family-friendly summer camp? This place has the potential to be that, but instead it's got serious issues. Let's start with the giant F*** Biden flag that greets you as you arrive (stars there only for the purposes of this review). All of the signs and junk around the main store about Trump are further proof that far-right politics are more important to the owners than family fun and appropriateness. The text on their website makes it clear that it's a place where "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" they claim to value is only for those who aren't "commies...antifa, blm or other terrorists." (One definitely wonders if Annie would prefer to exclude anyone from coming who is to the left of her on the political spectrum.) Really, please don't support that nonsense with your money.
The camp as a whole is new-ish (around 10 years old, one employee said) and set in a beautiful location (it's the ONLY reason I'll give them 2 stars instead of 1), but I got the sense they've been short-handed for a long time. In fact, I heard that from multiple staff members. Their "camper code" on their map talks about caring for the environment, but water balloon fragments are everywhere, bottles and wrappers can be found in the fish pond, and people's lost stuff littered the beach and grounds. The water inflatables were pretty fun, though because they were underinflated I wouldn't have called them particularly safe. The cycle boats seemed to all have loose parts or not work the best. The cabins were relatively decent as these things go, outside of bunk beds that had poorly-constructed guard rails, filthy trash cans, and ripped mattress covers. There are a fair number of activities for kids to do on nice weather days, but since we had rain most of day 1, sitting on a very smoke-filled bar patio (with, of course, no masks in sight; a COVID-related notice was nowhere to be found anywhere) was one of the few non-wet options. The "petting zoo" appeared to be limited to some chickens and ducks - not exactly animals who like to be petted. Got a dog over 65 pounds? You're out of luck too, because "folks do not like big dogs" according to their website. (That's news to the dog trainers and owners I know!) Don't arrive late, because parking-related signage and night-time lighting is essentially non-existent. I'm extremely lucky my car wasn't damaged by a rock I hit near one of our cabins one evening. The cheese pizzas are tasty but our first one came to us with lots of burned cheese, so the kids wouldn't eat it. I could go on.
Other family members made the reservations for our group, or we would have definitely gone elsewhere. That family member discovered on the way to the camp that Annie, the owner, was recently (May 2021) charged with Attempting to Flee or Elude an Officer, two counts of 2nd Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety, and Obstructing an Officer as a result of a high-speed chase with police. (Google it.) As she put it, "Not exactly the kind of thing someone committed to a family-friendly, safe location does, is it?" read more
