The quick service taco market is pretty crowded, but Tiki Taco has made it its way into downtown OP to enter the fray. They will need something special to set themselves apart from the competition, and I am here to tell you that they have just that. For starters, they have plenty of outside seating for nicer weather, an array of taco variations and other dishes that will suit just about anyone's palate, fresh TexMex condiments, and a full bar on site. Their taco game is right up there with the market players (pro tip: if you do shellfish, then get something shrimp) and are made fresh as you order. This visit had us sampling tacos with chips & guac as well as the house margarita. The marg runs $10 and is a great value, plus they have a frozen version that they have mixing on the reg. The tacos were sublime: a pair of featured shrimp tacos that have that SoCal fusion going on. BIG shrimp (I know, oxymoron) adorned with fresh fixins' and served up in fresh corn tortillas - hard to beat. And these are not small shrimp, no, these are a good-sized filling and seasoned just perfectly. Add in their freshly made green salsa with a basket of chips and guac with a kick and you are going to be happy. The bar is pretty solid and a great spot to finish your tacos while washing them back with a beverage. The house marg is a good choice as there is, but check out the 'Party Time', which is a fruity vodka banger of a cocktail. Almost all drinks, save for the frozen kinds, are made in front of you and delivered with a smile. Top-shelf stuff! Parking is downtown OP, so if IYKYK: you might have to walk a few steps, though there are spots in front of you're lucky. Pricing is fair & friendly with most single tacos running $5-ish. I absolutely love the Olathe location, so I ordered from this location during my lunch break in Overland Park. My lunch was over $16 and honestly one of the most disappointing meals I've had in a long time. I paid extra for grilled shrimp, and they were cold, chewy, and extremely overcooked. My bowl was almost entirely rice. I did order extra rice, but that didn't mean that's all I wanted. There was barely any of the other ingredients -- just a tiny amount of beans and corn shoved into the corner. I was honestly shocked at how different this location was compared to Olathe. I almost took it back, but leaving work again during lunch just wasn't realistic, so I tried to eat what I could. Most of it ended up in the trash. NO guacamole which comes on the bowl. My husband and I stopped into this location, we usually frequent the Shawnee location. I ordered the shrimp tacos that are listed as gluten-free and my husband ordered the same. Their shrimp size is good, they have a bit larger shrimp than other places that offer shrimp tacos. They have a good flavor and I like their mild sauce. The only thing that I noticed is that their corn tortillas seemed just a bit greasy. The restaurant was clean and vibrant. We had very good service from the guy that worked the bar where we sat. The building is relatively small, great location. The servers and staff are kind. The problem I have is with the food. Half of the rice in my burrito was crunchy. So either they gave me rice that was stuck to the bottom of an overheated pot, or they just undercooked it. Not worth my money. The tacos however, are worth every penny, as well as the drinks. You order in the back right corner, menus are sitting on the counter. We were greeted and had a lot of questions that were answered throughly and honestly. I want to try EVERYTHING on this menu, and that is very rare for me! I chose Crunch tacos, steak and chorizo and a Birria taco. Also the Carnitas street tacos and some chips and queso. This is located in a really nice neighborhood of overland Park downtown area, but you need to be careful with the parking because it's limited parking spots there. I wonder why I never had a chance to go to this place before because literally this place looks like an old school diner experience and it looks really really cool. We obviously ordered a lot of food there along with the tacos that we got some of the must try that I felt was grilled chicken quesadillas. The grilled chicken was amazing and that and the Baja fish tacos are super good. We tried a bunch of different salsa all the way from mind to super hot loved the experience. The staff is super friendly and the service is outstanding because they were always checking on us since it was the first time that we visited our place. very friendly place. I've been to all 5 locations and all of them have exceptionally friendly folks working there. the kitchen staff comes out and talks to customers as well as the "wait staff". Yes the food is quick serve but it's always fresh and tasty. I've never tasted anything like the Thai chicken tacos but they're amazing. My cousin and I had just wrapped up taking our girls to the zoo and thought we'd pop into their location on Troost for a better lunch than what we could find at the Zoo. I liked the many familiar and somewhat unique protein options, the fast service and the reasonable prices during my dine-in lunch visit on their second day of operation, but there was room for improvement. My chicken tiki bowl ($9.99) was served just a few minutes after I ordered at the "order here" window near the back of the dining area. It was nicely sized at 7" x 2.5" with a good variety of healthy, fresh ingredients. Unfortunately, I was overcharged for taxes ($1.91 on a $9.99 item), the small plastic spork utensil made Taco Bell look premium, the print size on the menus was extremely small, the order process doesn't ask if you want a receipt, there were no menu boards at the order window (just small print menus) and my choice of salsa was served in a very small, half full container - WTH? Larger salsa containers or a salsa bar would be nice. Also, if you are looking for complimentary chips and salsa, then you need to look elsewhere. The service at the counter was accommodating, with a satisfaction check at the table and an offer to provide another small container of salsa. I found the dining area to be clean and nice with a long, L-shaped bar, upbeat, modern background music and a nice patio area, but the dining area got pretty loud in there pretty fast. They currently offer a $2.00 street taco special on taco Tuesdays. Overall, A-OK. read more
