I wasn't planning on going here during my trip, but my friend said it was the best restaurant she ate at in Mexico City, so I decided to swap out another restaurant with this one. Was it the best restaurant we ate at? No, not even close. But the food was good! We had a reservation for right when they opened, so we were able to pick where to sit. I wish we picked the bar because the actual tables are so low and small. Definitely more meant for drinks than food. Walking in, it's a very dark and moody vibe. It's the kind of place where an older couple next to us were shining their phone flashlights on the menu because it's so hard to see. FYI, they don't have any English menus, so I just took a picture of the menu and put it in Google Translate. We got the baby corn, smoked cheese, chicharron de arroz, and the plantain dessert. Everything tasted really good, but the chicharron was definitely the best dish of the night! The texture reminded me a lot of shrimp chips, which was probably why I liked it so much. My boyfriend said the plantain dessert was the most unique dessert he's ever had. There are no meat dishes here, so it's a great place to take a pescatarian or vegetarian. I thought I'd still be hungry after our meal because these were small plates, but I was surprisingly full (probably because of all that cheese). I probably wouldn't come back here because there's so much good food in Mexico City, but I'm glad I gave it a try!

Super overrated and probably the least awesome place we went during our entire 4 day visit to CDMX. I was really excited to try Ticuchi after reading about it in a travel blog, and sad to find it disappointing. The atmosphere is dark and sexy, which is about the best thing it has going for it. It feels very scene-y and elitist. Even with a reservation, they crammed about 8 of us around two TINY cocktail tables at a corner of the booth with some chairs added. There was barely enough room for all our drinks, never mind food (yet, they seemed peeved that we weren't ordering more food). When they seated us, they gave us one menu to be shared among 8 people, so it took forever for us to review the menu and order. The place is so dark, everyone in our party needed to use their flashlight to read the menu. The drinks are extremely expensive, not just by local standards, but that of any cosmopolitan city. Our cocktails ranged from $20-35 USD. They were tasty, but not $35 tasty. For that much money, you better be blowing my mind. The service was sporadic and not very friendly. All 8 in our party would recommend skipping this one.

Easily one of the best meals I've had in Mexico City! Everything is so fresh and natural--you can taste the high-quality ingredients in every bite. The flavors? A whole new twist on what I'm used to as a Latino, and let me tell you--the chef here is pure magic! The atmosphere is jaw-dropping--just a dark, intimate room that sets the perfect mood. And the service? Incredible! Our server was also a total drink connoisseur, which made the experience even better. Honestly, this was hands down my best dining experience in Mexico City this time around. I haven't dined anywhere like this in at least four years, and wow, did I miss it! Now, let's talk about the details--because they nailed it. The mole? Mind-blowing. Some of the best I've ever had. And the mezcal in the cocktails? Chef's kiss! If you haven't already figured it out, this is officially my favorite restaurant in Mexico City right now. Do yourself a favor and go!!!

Fantastic service. Unique, tasty menu. Chill vibes. Pumpkin Soup - 4/5 Egg and Cheese Tamale - 5/5 Quesadilla - 5/5 Sooo many delicious items. A really fun, unique menu. Service is great. Love the outdoor seating with Al fresco vibes.

The recent poor reviews of Ticuchi almost made us reconsider booking somewhere else for our last night, but a colleague convinced me it was worth the visit. Ticuchi was our favorite restaurant of CDMX, so I'm glad I kept it! And it's a pescatarian menu! I didn't think the music was too loud, we were not cramped, although the tables are low. Our service was exceptional, albeit a little rushed feeling in the beginning to put our order in. This is a minor critique though for what was a fantastic dinner. We heard the drinks were a highlight here, and our spicy mezcal cocktails were our favorite drinks of CDMX (sorry Handshake)! We ordered two tamales, the first being the restaurant's signature tamal stuffed with cheese, the second being an eggplant and tomato tamal (felt like a deconstructed eggplant pasta but in tamal form which was super cool and creative). Both were delicious, but their standard tamal is the must order over everything. The esquites were yummy and roasted to perfection, and we actually thought the guac was chunky deliciousness (had seen some other negative reviews but no complaints here). The weakest dish was the scallops and plantain main - very unique pairing but didn't quite land, both items worked great with the sauce just not together, but it was still yummy. The pescado curado was our other favorite - the fish with the jicama and mole was a beautiful, otherworldly delight! We ended the night with the plantain boat dessert. Wish they had gone a tiny bit lighter on the queso and heavier on the crema, but still delicious. Our bill was high but not the highest of the trip considering how much food we ordered. In short, I'm surprised at the negative reviews because our visit was superb. I would 100% visit again.

Ambiance? Upscale, very dim, loud, sexy. Reservations needed? Yes! Food? Oh my. Listen, I used to very much dislike tamales. After having the tamales here, I would like to apologize to every tamale I have ever offended. Holy moly their tamale dish was out of this world. The crudo, mole, corn, romesco - all delicious. Pretty good drinks too. This was the only upscale restaurant we had time to try in CDMX so I can't compare to places like Pujol but I will tell you that it did not disappoint.

Romesco de Sikil Pak

Price Taste Ratio - Great A good cheaper alternative to Pujol. Made the reservation the day of and was able to even get there thirty mins earlier and be seated. The majority of the dishes were under $13! Bebida de Calpis y Cardamomo - Excellent! You need to have this with your dinner. It's nonalcoholic and incredibly refreshing. The Romesco de Sikil Pak - light flavor and not heavy, good starter. Elotitos - strong lime flavor with a good amount of charred corn. A little too much lime for my liking. Zanahorias Asadas con Mole Negro - I would have gotten five of these if I could. By far the best Mole Negro I have ever had. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Comes with six blue corn tortillas. Taco de Pulpo - it was a great portion of octopus. Crispy and filling. It does only come with one Taco so it's hard to share. Plátano Macho - a hearty and filling dessert that mixes sweet and savory. You won't feel gross after eating this as it's good transition from savory to sweet. It was a little crowded with the seating and tables feel like side tables so it's a bit tight. However the design and vibes are great! Unless you eat a lot, you'll leave hungry. This is a good apps place for a pre-dinner!

Since Pujol was fully booked until October, we decided to check out Enrique Olvera's other restaurant in Polanco. I made reservations for Ticuchi a month before and SO glad I did. There was a line forming outside the door before they opened for the evening. The vibe and interior of the place is romantic and casual. I absolutely loved the food and the service! We ordered four tapas plates which was enough. My only complaint is the tables were small and around us, everyone was crammed into the area. We ordered the following: 2 drinks (banana drink and margarita) Guacamole con Xcatik Croqueta de Papa, Hongos, Chipotle Tamale maiz Zanahorias Asadas con mole

Only source of light.

I wanted to make it a point to seek out some authentic oaxacan mole, so I chose this spot that was recommended by eater.com and the Michelin guide. Had the black mole with duck breast, which was served with rice and a plantain. It was so good as the flavors were so complex and they paired really well with the perfectly cooked duck, the rice, and my fruity cocktail. On that note, I ordered one of their speciality cocktails with passionfruit and it was so good. I actually enjoyed my cocktail, made with fresh fruit, here more than the world renowned bar down the street. Also got salsa made tableside and an appetizer of pork taquitos (which, in this context, were tiny tacos). Both were flavor bombs. Overall, we are glad that we stopped by to get a sampling of very flavorful food from this restaurant and I'd definitely come back!

Too bad the place was so hot and stuffy. It was cooler outside than it was inside. All they needed to do was open some windows. Service was great though.

The space itself is lovely -- a well-designed hall with elegantly set tables, fresh flowers, and a charming courtyard with greenery that adds to the atmosphere. It feels upscale and calm, and when we visited, it was not crowded, which made it even more peaceful. However, the service and food did not quite match the setting. The staff were not particularly welcoming, and communication was a bit challenging as most did not speak much English. While manageable, it did affect the overall experience. They began with a bread basket (bread and croissants), which unfortunately did not feel fresh or warm -- something you would expect at a place with this level of presentation. We ordered a couple of dishes along with a fruit bowl: * The fruit lacked the freshness and ripeness you typically find in Mexico, even at casual local spots. * The main dishes were average in flavor -- nothing stood out, and they felt somewhat generic rather than reflective of local cuisine.

The interior is pretty plain, with some Oaxacan art on the walls, apparently available for purchase. We were served tortilla chips with samples of 3 moles (Negro, Coloradito and I think the 3rd was Mancha Manteles) and 2 salsas. As my wife and I primarily went to Barro Negro to sample moles, it was great that we could taste them before committing to a full entree. They were all very good and very different. If you think all moles are 'a Mexican chocolate sauce,' then you'll be surprised at the different varieties. The salsas were all very good and on the spicy side. For entree, I ordered the Mole Coloradito and my wife got the Mole Negro. Both were served with a chicken leg/thigh quarter covered in a very generous pool of mole, along with a small amount of rice and beans. For me, it was the right amount of mole (a lot!) and rice and beans (a small portion of each). The Coloradito is a sweeter mole, very smooth and rich. It was excellent. The Negro is smoky, almost burnt tasting. I happened to know that the cooking process includes burning chile seeds and adding them to the mixture. To me, it was kind of ashy and not to my taste. My wife said that she really liked it and the flavor mellows as you eat more. At any rate, if you're familiar with Mole Poblano, which is also very dark, the Oaxacan black mole is a totally different dish. As it was late, we chose not to get any dessert. The service was attentive and quick, not surprising given that the restaurant we empty. We enjoyed our food very much and highly recommend Barro Negro for sampling Oaxacan moles.
