Listen to this: I need more Latin cuisine practice. Estoy practicando hablar en español... but that's as far as I get. I love to try new foods and attempt the local language wherever I go... but still it's impossible to mask dumb: I ordered a delicious bowl of Eggs in Xalapa style tomato broth. It arrived but they brought tortillas.... Ok... maybe I should take the (what appeared to be) scrambled eggs out of the broth and into the tortillas? Maybe add some beans and salsa too? No, of course you cannot make tacos out of soup-- idiota!!!! I had to laugh at myself and only one passing server gave me the Rock's stanky eyebrow as broth squirted everywhere! This place is absolutely stunning. The views by the window, the food presentation, the artwork and decor inside and out: I loved it all. It was especially nice that this whole Palanco area is basically one big green park. Again, my Spanish isn't great and I need much more practice but the waitress and the management were so kind and supportive. I would definitely recommend this place for a solo adventurer but it's quaint and yummy enough for a nice group dinner. read more

The only good meal I had in Mexico City. Living in San Diego and visiting Tijuana for food quite often, I guess I'm used to above average restaurant experiences. I would've thought Mexico City had great food in general, but that wasn't the case. Was there for four days, ate many meals out and this was the only one I really enjoyed. Too bad the place was so hot and stuffy. It was cooler outside than it was inside. All they needed to do was open some windows. Service was great though. read more

Since I always stay at one of the hotels nearby, I try to come here on every visit, so I have been here several times over the last decade or so. I come here for the Molé, as it is a guarantee that it's going to be good and this time was no different. We came on a Friday night, and I thought it would be packed, but there was not a soul in the restaurant. We were seated and brought tortilla chips and salsa, and ordered margaritas. The chips were terrible, basically small, uncut tortillas that have been put on the fire and were actually burned. I did get them to bring more regular tortilla chips but they weren't great either. I find it difficult to get good tortilla chips here in CDMX but hey. Things went straight up from there, the Margaritas were the best I had here in Mexico City, one of the best that I have EVER had! We ordered quesadillas for a started, they were perfect. For the main, I had my usual- Chicken Molé- and it was definitely up to their standard- and some of the best Molé I have ever had. Service was a bit hit or miss, and suddenly I looked up and the place was packed! While there are many Mexican restaurants in the Polanco area, this one is a guarantee for a great Molé! read more

Excellent mole taco. We were on a culinary tour through CDMX and stopped at El Bajío, this place was great. The standout for me was the mole taco, which was excellent: rich, well-balanced, and clearly made with care. Service was solid and efficient, especially considering we had a fairly large group. They were accommodating and kept things moving without feeling rushed. Definitely a worthwhile stop if you're exploring classic Mexican flavors in Mexico City. Came here for lunch. We got the beef tongue, octopus tostadas, and 2 tacos (lamb and pork). My faves were the lamb taco (tender and strong lamb flavor) and the octopus tostadas (octopus pieces were pretty large and tender). Delicious meal in a nice atmosphere. The restaurant itself is large and bright with nice artworks on the walls. Our meal was really good. We ordered the marinated skirt steak, side of mole, zucchini flower taco, beef tongue taco and a salad with mixed native vegetables. I can honestly recommend ALL of those dishes. If you are creating a list of food adventures for your trip to CDMX then it is a no brainer to include El Bajio on that list. Nestled on the corner of a busy street in Polanco across the street from some cool spots to chill and walk around you will find El Bajio. I have been here multiple times since 2019 and every time has been a joy. This is a delicious Mexican restaurant that should be attended in a group setting for ultimate table diversity in terms of ordering plates on plates on plates to really get a taste of what they offer. First tip is simple, if you like coffee then order the Cafe de Olla. If you don't like coffee then order the Cafe de Olla. It is top 3 locations for Cafe de Olla in my opinion across the entire city and it's a big city. Some other dishes that I believe make this place special are the Carnitas in which you order by weight. The Medium size plate which is roughly a 1lb of meat is perfect for your group. Order fresh tortillas and guacamole in addition so that you can snack on tacos as you go. Another delicious plate is Milanesa de pollo and the flank steak are absolutely delicious. I also love the sopa de Fideo caldo and the chicharron, it is so light and crispy. All of the salsas are delicious too! The alcoholic drink menu is also superb with just too many drinks to recall. Customer service is great, very attentive and they treat you well. This location is really nice and clean inside. It is an upscale location and the interior is fancy too. Like I said, I highly recommend this place. Very family oriented also. Prices are medium to high for the area but totally worth it. read more

El Bajio is a great neighborhood restaurant. There were local couples, a birthday celebration, and travellers all dining there. There was plenty of room between tables to maintain social distancing. I am not a spanish speaker and they did everything possible to make sure I had a nice meal. I would have just had one side but I think they wanted to make sure I ate what I enjoyed and put a little of everything on my plate. The steak was tender and perfectly grilled. Went to Mexico City in March and visited el Bajio. Located on Polanco, it was highly recommended thanks to trusty Yelp! My friend and I were starving after a long day of travel so we ventured for chicken mole, carnitas, barbacoa, empanadas de platano maduro (omg! Genius!), guacamole (the best I have had in a long time. This needs to be packed and sold!). Once you get your protein it's all game. Grab a freshly made tortilla, add your carnitas or barbacoa, onions, cilantro, tomatillo or aji sauce, and dig in. Repeat as many times as your stomach will allow. Wash it all down with margaritas on the rocks. Just like the Dr recommends! El Bajio is awesome and can't be missed! Looking forward to returning next time in CDMX. read more

I went to El Bajío for dinner because it was close to my hotel and I wanted some authentic Mexican food. I must say that I was a bit underwhelmed. I ordered the Mezcal Guava cocktail that was delicious but I didn't taste any alcohol in it or felt any buzz. They gave me complimentary chips and salsa but the chips were burnt, like did they serve this to me because I was a tourist. The majority of the chips were inedible. Next, I ordered the plantain empanada that was probably the best thing I had there. For an entree, I order the mole enchiladas; however, the server took it upon himself to add the cheese for an extra charge that I did not ask for and I do not eat a lot of dairy. I had to scoop it off and put it to the side even though I was paying extra for it. Though the server did that, he was friendly and the restaurant is very well decorated. Even though it was only 10:40am we changed our mi da and opted for lunch instead of breakfast. This restaurant is definitely a full-service establishment, with valet parking and a super professional staff. The am incentive is casual, and they have plenty of seating options on the sidewalk, which is what we enjoy. We started off with a. Purple of pastries and two glasses of orange juice. After that it was our time to order. I decided on pork ribs in spicey sauce, and my husband's order was the cured beef steak. After a short time, and several Mexican songs from the duo Street performers, our platters were delivered to our table. How many times do you start the dining experience with a present that was given by the President of the country you are visiting? Yes, that's how my evening started. I cannot believe it was real. It was a busy day all over the government's offices. We started at 8 am and ended up at 8 pm. Now dinner with the muckety mucks. I LOVE Mexico City. I LOVE the people I met. These are folks who are really trying to make a difference and improves its people's lives. Good folks and honorable goals. This restaurant is very close to the JW which is a plus, less than 5 minutes of walk. They picked this restaurant because it's central in Polanco and it's got really good Mexico food. 100% authentic. I sat next to this super powerful super smart man (SPSSM) whom I had the pleasure of spending the day with. He helps me to order as most Mexican men of his generation would do. We talked about books, politics, and scuba dining. We then talk about business, and as we were doing so, he orders me Margarita which was delicious. I'm on a diet so I told the waiter to hold rice and beans and give me the flank beef straight up. But wait, the lady who I just met just ordered pigs feet salad. I want some of that too. The SPSSM turns to the waiter, and there they were, speaking in Spanish, deciding what I should eat. Then SPSSM then tells me in English, "the waiter told me that the beef is too big for you to consume". The chef will make something just for you. Just like that, this dainty Asian woman's meal fate was decided. I don't complain. I am not one of those feminists who get offended by men making meal choices for her. Quite the contrary, when you have real responsibilities and are in fact in charge, having men to make decisions for you in other areas of your life is entirely a relief, and in a way, very flattering! So this is what the chef fed me. 1) a small tostada with chopped pickled pigs feet salad; 2) a small beef tongue taco; 3) guacamole and other table appetizers to share; 4) a tiny portion size of filet mignon with salad. Emphasize on "tiny". I guess for these men, I'm not suited to eat a huge flank steak. Lo and behold, my male colleague's flank steak arrived. It's HUGE. They were right. I couldn't consume that even if I tried. Dessert and dessert wine to follow. A very fun and exciting meal. This reminds me, I need to write to the SPSSM that I did finish the book we discussed.
