Ravinia is an essential Chicago area experience. And when things go well, they're great. But in you…read morehave to have a plan to make it work. It's a festival in two parts; the newly renovated Pavilion and the Lawn. The Pavilion is more expensive but every seat has a view of the stage. There is a limit to what you can enjoy in the seats, whereas the lawn is bring your own (mostly) everything (legal). You can pregame on the lawn and then enjoy the pavilion if you get Pavilion tickets. You won't be allowed into the pavilion until 30-60 minutes before the show starts. The shows generally start on time. The lawn is where the party is at. It's broken in sections, some is reserved for group tickets. The rest is generally first come first served. You can bring blankets, chairs, food and drink. You can buy libations and snacks from the shop but they can be spendy. Folks get very creative with their BYO. You may or may not be able to see anything on the lawn but the sound is pretty good since they renovated. Rental chairs are available but can sell out, best to reserve in advance. There are a couple restaurants onsite. Best to make a reservation if possible. There may be bar seats available depending on the show and timing. Getting there can be what makes or breaks your experience. Best practice is to get there as early as possible to ensure you get parking or an early train. If you miss out on parking, there are overflow lots but they also sell out. The shuttles get full and you can end up waiting long times. The Metra can be convenient but at the end of the night it leaves almost an hour after the show ends. Basically though one of the main things you have to decide if you want to actually see the act or not. If it's classical, a picnic on the lawn maybe fine. Sound is great anywhere in the park except maybe the farthest corners. There is a usually big lawn screen for pop/rock acts, but the lawn is very crowded over there. If you want to actually see the act, you really must buy pavillion seats. Ravinia made it extra difficult after the 2026 remodel to get a glimpse of the acts while standing outside the pavillion. Otherwise I would have recommended that in the past as an option. For most acts we get to the park early, picnic on the lawn, and then move to our pavillion seats before the show starts. The picnic is fun and relaxing, and it is obviously so much less expensive than the food served in the park. Otherwise in a nutshell - Ticket prices: Fair, compared to other venues. And no gawdawful TicketMaster fees. Ticket ordering: A disaster. All tickets for the season go on sale the same day. Lawn: Nice but overcrowded. Can't see the act (except if near the big lawn screen). Very good sound. Pavilion: Very nice. 2026: New padded (wider?) seats. Excellent sound and views. Parking: A disaster, get there very early. I don't know about the train, it's not an option for me. Food and drink: Not very good and overpriced. Bring your own, it's a great perk about Ravinia actually.

Seanachai's plays are all Irish-centric, from the playwrights to the settings, and fittingly, their home is the Irish American Heritage Center - the perfect venue for them. Not surprisingly, their productions are compelling in subject matter. Don't go expecting a "light" play; they tackle very thought-provoking material. Having said that, both plays I've seen are shot through with humor that the Irish are also known for. Most importantly, the artists of Seanachai are master craftsmen of character and storytelling, and their passion comes through strongly in THE WEIR. Set in modern-day Ireland, about rural barflies and a big-city visitor to their backwater "local," this production is a compact masterpiece of characters drawn and stories told (literally; each character but one tells a gripping tale) that does not end at all like one is led to believe. It's truly an ensemble piece with no weak links; you will find yourself wanting to reach for a beverage next to you, so strongly do you feel a part of this intimate pub evening on a blustery Irish heath. I look forward to attending many more productions in the future.If you enjoy live theater or are into Gaelic storytelling, do yourself a favor and check them out. If you go on a Friday or Saturday night, you can stop for "a small one" after the show in the Fifth Province - the Irish pub on the first floor of the IAHC, and perhaps share your own stories with a cast member or two.

Intrigued by the description of their latest play, The Weir, I decided to go back to the Irish American Heritage Center to see a preview performance. Oh, you didn't know there was a theater in the IAHC? Well, there is! It's very intimate and you feel like you're on the stage with Seanachai's talented ensemble cast. One of my biggest complaints about theater in Chicago is that it's so darn expensive. We don't have "off-broadway", or even "off, off-broadway." We have overpriced Ticketmaster fees and venues so big that you can barely tell if you're watching an actor or a muppet perform. The tickets to see Seanachai are extremely affordable and, on the particular night that I was there, included a Q & A with the director and cast. Since I went to a preview performance, I am interested in going back in a few weeks to see how the play has progressed and also plan on attending future performances.

We came here for the very first Chicago Red Stars game. They will be here permanently (?) starting…read morenext season. We were told a shuttle bus would take us to the stadium from the Central Station Purple Line. Even after being picked up and dropped off, it was a 5-8 minute walk to the stadium. There was signage to show us where to go, otherwise we just followed people around us. The directions are to get off at Noyes and walk 20 minutes. I wonder if shuttles will be available during the regular season. Of course the residential/campus areas were swamped with cars so walking is probably better. We got through security no problem, no hassles, but they should have more gates and detectors if they are going to have games here! There were food trucks and booths with alcohol, merch tents, Porto Potties (heck no!) and tents selling food that was of course overpriced. It was a very nice day, cloudy with sun and dry; I can IMAGINE what it's like when it rains! NO indoor spaces to buy food, except a couple of huge tents? I was expecting a Soldier Field/Wrigley field structure where one can move to seats and stay inside but really stacked bleachers. The food trucks were ok but food was not super hot. The field had timers and score boards but not facing south, where we sat. We had to crane to see the score. There should be scoreboards on all sides. We found some indoor restrooms at half time thank goodness, and they were clean. Instead of going back to the seats we walked around and bought more concessions in the patio area. A medical company was giving away prizes, and we were able to see the scores on a big tv (Stars won!) plus there was a play area for kids. The lake view was very nice, I'm glad the Stars are pushing the lakefront attribute, but I can't say I would look forward to coming here regularly, esp as the weather becomes very hot or very cold, as there is no protection from the elements.

Theatre lovers, read on: I am blessed with many talented friends. Last night I went to see one of them in a play at this theatre. The theatre itself is smaller - lending itself more to independent productions. Stadium seating alleviates the concern of who sits in front of you. Seats are wide and comfy and there is plenty of legroom. My only small gripe would be the bathroom situation. As a BYOB establishment (beer makes some urges more... urgent...), the bathrooms really aren't up to par. There is one on the main floor, but it is behind the set itself, so you basically have to walk through the side of the scene. This will likely have you crossing your legs until intermission. However, the main bathroom is a one-stall unisex set up, so you will be waiting in line with half of the audience.

The set was simple, just a scene of a hotel room, but the acting and story line made up for it. There was a disclaimer on sexual situations/scenes, but damn I wasn't expecting it to be that graphic! The actors were exposing their nether regions and simulating fellatio. I think my aunt would never trust me to take care of my cousin if she found out. So there was a bit of shock value to it, but it was a whole new experience for me. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Stage Left and will be heading back again sometime. Also another tip, you can get great discounts on dining before or after the show with your ticket stub at several restaurants in the area. I believe with Sheffield's restaurant, the offer is buy one entree get one free.
