Got in late on a Monday, and asked if they had a room on the first floor and they did. Price was good! Bed was comfortable which I was surprised. It wasn't updated but it was very clean. Also the toilet was a good height, Not so low to the ground like others. Breakfast was egg muffin and yo plait and heated it up in room. WOW! SO CLEAN! Accommodating staff, excellent priced room! Beds made so beautifully and clean! Even a coffee maker with coffee provided in your private room. SUPER quiet even though the main road isn't far away. Very VERY kind owner/management and staff. Wyndham 8 hotel was the hotel we came to twin and payed for but when we got there they said the hot water heater blew out! We are VERY glad that happened because it was FILTHY!!!!!!!!!!!! Gave a 5 star rating because their room rate is less than the Motel 6 in Elko that everybody on here is unhappy about. The breakfast is nothing to write home about but I don't think many of us choose a motel based on the free breakfast. Owners and management are Eastern Indian so slight problem there with their accent but no big deal. Probably one of the lowest rates in town with clean comfortable rooms and even have a picture in the bathrooms for a nice touch. read more

Rude owners! No manners no matter how many times I said please and thank you, he does not use them back nor was he friendly. Owners like to stare from a distance, wife stands in doorway glaring during check-in and at other times was watching from a close distance while my son and I played in the pool. It felt a bit creepy, she didn't even crack a smile when I said hello. Male owner treated me as if I was beneath him and that was not a good feeling as a woman traveling with her son. I will NOT go back here again. Beds were old, not comfortable at all. Amenities in rooms were not stocked and asking for another towel was like pulling teeth, questioned me as to WHY I needed 2 extra towels. WOW! If you have a pet, be prepared to pay $20 per night for your pet. I was grateful to have it refunded when my friends arrived and I learned the dog was a service dog. read more

Great looking 1950's neon signage and architecture with a pool! The booking manager was friendly and hospitable. I received a ground floor room as requested. My issues were with the dust from the AC and drapes as well as the too well-trafficked carpet. The bed was so-so, and so-so was my sleep. I might have slept longer if the motorcycle club had electric engines or left a bit later. But that's not the motel's fault. The bathroom had peeling paint, and the shower sported a poorly placed elbow-threatening soapdish. The lack of electrical outlets in the room was to be expected given its vintage construction. Not being able to charge my phone (w/alarm) bedside was inconvenient. I know that sounds a bit privileged. But travelers need to be pampered. The motel is in a strange neighborhood with other vintage motels lining both sides of the street. But then again, any place that is not home has an element of strangeness, so that aspect was ok for me. If you are in a state where you *need* to find a place to sleep, this will probably do. Otherwise, I would pass until the rooms are renovated. read more

We checked in late night and there was no parking and he moved his own car to make room for our van to park . And made sure we are comfortable in our stay and requests for a king room . The hotel options between the Bay Area and Yellowstone are limited, especially when you get going on I-80 in Nevada. If you look at a map, Elko pops up and is the natural place to stop - about eight hours into the two-day drive to Yellowstone. After looking on yelp for hotel options in Elko, all roads pointed to the Thunderbird. I love mid-century charm and the price was right, so I booked a room. As we exited the freeway and headed to the old school downtown, the neon Thunderbird sign was a beacon of light beckoning us into the parking lot. Other hotels and motels on the street had empty lots, however, the Thunderbird was full, which made me glad I had thought ahead to make a reservation. The place is old, but very well kept and clean. Nice fluffy towels, ice machine (important when you're on a road trip with multiple ice chests), free wifi and a cute pool make the Thunderbird a great place to stay when passing through. For the price and what you get, the Thunderbird is road tripping perfect. read more

The area that the Thunderbird is located in looks like mini Vegas. It's pretty freakin' adorable. There's cute shops everywhere, and a ton of interesting things to look at. The Thunderbird, itself is great. There's a pool! The rooms are incredible affordable, and really well-kept. The staff is very friendly, and the beds are even pretty comfortable. There's no coffee maker in the room I had, but they have it flowing 24-7 in the office, which I really enjoyed this morning. Thanks Thunderbird! I'll be seeing you again, for sure! read more

Checked in late, very nice man. Room looked fresh, my ESA dog was allowed no questions, no funny smells or stains, everything fresh, plenty of space in the doubble queen room. Only downside is the parking is tight, and there were a few people outside smoking talking kind of loud, once in the room I couldn't hear anything though. Lots of hotels and casinos near here, also no use of the pool or breakfast durring stupid covid. Major bummer. But the room is nice, I'd recomend it to friends. read more

We arrived weary and very sleepy on our cross country move by way of California. Very friendly desk reception. Quiet motel. Pet Friendly for my little critters. Mostly this hotel is extremely well-kept and the bed/sheets were so comfortable. The room smelled beautifully clean as well. We stayed for 2 nights and here's our experiences: Pros: Clean rooms despite its age. Passed my bedbug mattress inspection. Competively priced. Basic breakfast included. Cons: Matress is thin but adequate for a night's rest. Pillow is too small like for a kid. Rooms are serviced every other day which means coffee is not replenished daily. Coffee brand is poor quality even for motel coffee. Staff is not friendly/welcoming and does not speak much English making communication difficult. When I asked for 2 additional bath towels the older guy with glasses gave me a hard time and basically instructed me to leave all 4 towels (2 towels already in room when checked in) when we check out--meaning not steal them. I told him that all lodging establishments provide extra towels when asked by their patrons and that I make enough money to buy my own towels and he backed down. Breakfast was cereal, instant oatmeal, packaged muffins, fruits, and really weak brewed coffee. We won't be coming back to this establishment which is too bad as we value a clean motel but the staff attitude is far from customer friendly. Give this place a pass for other comparablely priced lodgings in town. read more

Good: they have updated the TV's to flat screens. Fluffy towels, comfy leather chairs, beds were nice and firm, nice bathmats. Wi-Fi worked well. Coffee and cookies in the lobby. Decent neighborhood. Parking was okay. BAD: check out is 11AM, we are not morning people. We arrived after 1 AM and asked for a late check out. We were given a bad time about it. Was told it might be possible. (she implied it would be okay but wouldn't commit) At 10AM on the dot people were entering our room. ummm hello we are sleeping and indecent. We stopped the housekeeper. Ended up checking out at 11:15. The person in the lobby was snotty and handed a receipt without a greeting, asking how our stay was, what our name was, or what room we were in. The paper she gave us indicated that we arrieved at 1:15 am... so we were in the room for 8 1/2 hours when they came barging in... wind down, sleep, shit, shower, shave... um nope not happening if you are not an early riser. (we have stayed at both red lion and gold country inn in the past and not had an issue with a late check out. Both are with in 2 miles of the Thunderbird) We had a smoking room. Had to go back to the lobby to get an ashtray at 1 in the morning. I have a back problem and the stairs were difficult for me. There is no elevator. People in reviews talked about bath and body works soap... nope generic hotel soap and NO SHAMPOO OR CONDITIONER. People in reviews talked about coupons for breakfast discount... no such item existed. Few outlets to charge electronics. read more

I'm actually writing this from the Thunderbird's free wireless, and I've had a great experience here. Clean rooms with tons of table space and comfy, clean beds (no bed bugs, my mother made me check.) Water was hot and plentiful, and there is a microwave and mini fridge in the room which is very convenient. Booked it through priceline at no great discount, but the woman at the desk was very accommodating and friendly. This place is also smack dab in downtown, right across the street from the Commerical Casino and Stockman's, and two blocks down from the Star Hotel -- and Mona's, in case that's your thing. Overall, a great place to lay your head in Elko. read more

This is, of course, a relative star rating... Given rural, northern Nevada, this is as good as it gets. Would I give it 5 stars in Boston or Chicago...? Probably not. But again - you're in Nevada. Everything about this place is fantastic, and I'm picky and have germ-a-phobic tendencies. And there is nothing so unique and down-home in large cities anymore anyway, so there you go... I felt like I had slipped into the early 70's with the 2 leather captain's chairs and the amazingly stylized decor - but it's not threadbare or dirty, it seems somehow preserved and inviting. Microwave and fridge/freezer included and the rooms are immaculate. The carpet could use a cleaning, but aside from that, it's the best I've ever had in Nevada - especially for the price. It's quaint, charming, friendly and endearingly retro. It's obvious the staff takes pride in their product and cares about their customers. Considering it's only $10 more than the skeezy, bug-infested Motel 6-of-shatterted-dreams down the street, it's a no-brainer. You will remember this stay, I guarantee. Comfy beds, good showers and a block away from the best restaurant in town (Machi's.) If you find yourself in this part of Nevada, I'm sorry for you, and you should treat yourself to this respite from the mundane and depressing surroundings which encroach at every turn. It's retro, cool and welcoming. No complaints. Free wireless that works and a friendly vibe. read more

After reading yelp reviews I decided to chance a hotel with the name "Thunderbird Inn" and at $60 a night I won't feel ripped off if it's a dump .. It was great. Stopped here on our way back from Idaho before continuing the journey on to Sacramento. At first I was a little hesitant about the place but I'm very impressed. The rooms are large (we got a room with 2 double beds). There is a mini fridge and micro in the room. You would think the bathrooms would be slightly bigger considering how large the rooms are. We were also given $5 food certificates, which is great! Overall for just one night this is a good place to stay. I think we paid roughly $70, which is okay although I was expecting slightly cheaper. read more

Beds comfortable, and that is about all I can say on the plus side. We needed to plug in lamp and had to move bed and then found where it hadn't been vacuumed well. Suppose the bathroom was clean, but toilet seat was up and none of that foamy clean smelling water that you often find to tell you that it was scrubbed. Carpet had mysterious stains. Exterior needs lots of work and had there been a fire we would have perished as there was only one way down. Don't serve breakfast just because you think you have to. Unremarkable packaged items and coffee so so with lids that didn't fit. read more

Quick summary: there's a million places to stay in this town and there's only a few on Yelp. This place was $69/night + $15/pet + tax = $92/night. There are much cheaper options out there. The room was clean but the TV was small/fuzzy, and the Internet doesn't work. Long review: This place is highly over rated. I had to make three phone calls to get the "FREE WIFI" they advertised on their sign. I called the woman at the front desk to ask what was wrong with the Internet. She said she would reset the router. After waiting an hour, I called the technical support number listed on the login page... to a guy in Rochester, New York. He said the woman at the motel didn't reset the Internet router. I had to call him back again to finally get things working. So I finally got the Internet working, after about 3 hours and 15 minutes before I had planned on going to bed. When I complained about it the next morning, the guy at the front desk said they knew that the Internet wasn't working but that the manager was on vacation and they couldn't do anything about it. That's pretty crappy to advertise something that you know doesn't work. Bait and switch. read more

My boyfriend and I stayed here on our roadtrip from Michigan to California. We booked the room ahead of time and weren't sure what to expect. Our options were limited because we were traveling with a small dog, and the Thunderbird Motor Inn is pet friendly. I believe the pet fee was only $15 extra. The people in the office were very courteous and helpful. We were given a room with 2 double beds (I guess all the pet rooms have 2 double beds) and I was surprised by how spacious it was. There was even a microwave and minifridge (which I was not expecting for such a modestly priced motel room)! The entire city of Elko is a wireless hotspot, so Internet access was also free. There is an outdoor pool but no hot tub. Lots of parking. I would definitely stay here again if I ever make another cross-country trip with my pet. read more

On the eastbound leg we checked in without a reservation and got one of the last rooms. Westbound we called in about 4 PM that day to reserve a room. We stopped here on a road trip from San francisco to visit family in Salt Lake City. Two parents, three kids in the back, long drive in the dead of winter. We were tired and cranky, but the cool sign and friendly folks at the front desk (as well as those packets of hot chocolate) really cheered everyone up. The rooms were spacious and pleasant and clean, very nice for what you might expect from a 'motor inn.' Way above the Motel 6 variety. Being sent down the road for breakfast in the local casino was a little bit of a surprise, but the waitress was super friendly and the food was good. The kids got to learn about one-armed bandits, states without nonsmoking laws in the restaurants, and taxidermy all at the same time (the casino is decorated with all kinds of stuffed big game). Altogether a great place to stay, even when it's 17 degrees outside and you have to stay in the room. read more

Needed to cut road trip early due to the hot weather. One of the few cities on 180 Nevada I was drawn in by the sign. They accept dogs and there is a pool onsite. Girl at the counter gave me an awesome deal paid 50 bucks for king size bed and she let my dog stay with me on the lawn chair in the pool area since no one was around. Been so tired from the roadtrip and that night was so awesome. They have sort of grab and go breakfast with waffles and juice. Definitely worth it, will stay again if I stroll through Elko again. read more

I checked into the Thunderbird based on the other reviews I read and was quite pleased. I was given a corporate rate, which saved me about $20 off of the regular rate. The room was clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. My only other comment is in regards to the lack of electrical outlets. The ones they did have were occupied by lamps and the tv or stuck behind furniture. I was traveling with a computer, video camera and cell phone, so I really needed the juice. Not a deal breaker, just something I noticed. read more
