What a great place for a good price! Very good staff they are helpful and nice. Donuts and coffee, popcorn. And RC cola with monies in your room. Good price during hurricane Helene no price gouging. Room is clean, safe and simple. Would recommend not anyone! read more

We recently stayed at The Thunderbird Inn for the weekend. This was my third stay at this particular Savannah motel (2005, 2006, 2009). The 2005 and 2006 stays were terrific. Everything was brand-new, clean, fresh, modern, and exciting. This most recent visit (in 2009) was a bit disappointing. Thus, my lower rating. When the old motel was converted and revamped, it was fantastic. This time around, it felt a bit...dirty. The sheets and towels were scratchy. The silky bedspread was gone. The sink towel bar was missing. The tub needed a good scrubbing (it had visible stains). The bathroom floor was dirty and covered in hairs (I won't say what kind). We made the best of it, though, because I got a better rate at The Thunderbird Inn than I would have staying right downtown in the Historic District (about 1/3 the price). We didn't say anything to the manager or housekeepers about the state of the room because, well, you shouldn't have to. Cleanliness should be a given. It was obvious the bathtub and bathroom floor hadn't been cleaned in weeks. Or months for that matter, depending on how many guests had stayed in it. On the day of our checkout, we decided to grab a drink of orange juice from the continental breakfast bar that the motel offers guests every morning. We drank the glasses of OJ on our walk to Sunday brunch elsewhere. The OJ was warm, but we wanted to get some vitamin C in us. BIG mistake. HUGE. Why? The OJ obviously had not been recently filled and was on its way toward being chilled. It had been sitting out for quite some time...spoiling. Yes, both my partner and I were very ill for the rest of the day and the drive home. And, yes, we're quite sure it was the OJ (I won't go into details). At any rate, The Thunderbird Inn isn't what it was just a few years ago. They need to get their act together again before I'd consider another stay. The cheaper rates are becoming more and more aligned with what you get. read more

This place is beyond adorable and hits the retro vibe perfectly! I felt as if I had pulled into a time warp of grease or happy days as soon as I pulled into the parking lot. I appreciate that they have a nice sized parking lot right on premise so no late night walking from the car and the parking pass is a decent price. The service was friendly fast and efficient I had a great stay. read more

The Thunderbird Inn is a classic vintage Americana motel that takes you back to the "good 'ole days". Right off Oglethorpe and MLK....very walkable and close to many attractions including the city market. If you want to ride bikes....they rent them here. Bring your bike.....they have bike racks. Want to bring fido....they are fog friendly even providing a area for the dogs to play. They also will equip you with all the dog friendly places and events to help keep your pet happy. Rooms are nice sized and equipped with fridge, coffee pot, moon pies, rc colas, and they supply you with all the shampoo/soap/lotion.....winning! The office is supplied with FREE Krispy Kream doughnuts, coffee, lemonade, water, fresh popcorn, and a variety of beer and sodas for sell. It's very tourist friendly. I am in Savannah a lot, and had reservations here last year, however they were flooded from the hurricane and we couldn't stay due to renovations. But this year when calling to make reservations, they pulled it up in computer and gave us a discount for not being able to stay there last time. I mean....what a great way to say thanks for giving them another try! Thanks for a great weekend Thunderbird....I will always suggest people to stay here! read more

We stayed here in our recent weekend trip to Savannah. My husband was so excited about the retro theme, but we weren't super thrilled with our stay. Some of the things were phenomenal, but overall our stay was "meh". The good: The front desk staff were friendly and professional! Their hotel is very pet friendly (I did not have a pet with me, but do have a pet and was very impressed with how pet friendly they were). They were cheaper than the other hotels in the area, and were within walking distance of everything we wanted to see. The bad: Our bathroom had a fan that stayed on 100% of the time. We had no option to turn it off, which was rather annoying at night. Our bathroom light was an automatic sensory type light, so when someone went into the bathroom in the middle of the night, everyone in the room was rudely awakened. (It would turn on before you could even close the door). Our shower had absolutely no water pressure and had water coming out of only 7 holes which made rinsing very difficult. The walls were super thin, we could hear the baby next door crying at night. You have to pay for parking. They also play music outside throughout the day, which was lovely, but one night it wasn't turned off and it was bothersome when trying to sleep. I also do not think they should be categorized as a hotel that serves breakfast. I mean, technically they do because they serve donuts, coffee and juice, but that was not breakfast! We wanted a hotel that served actual breakfast so we could eat shortly after waking up (due to a medical condition) but found ourselves having to wait for breakfast at a restaurant each morning. I recognize that this could have easily been eliminated had we done more thorough research and found out ahead of time that they only served donuts. read more

You ever search for a hotel on booking.com, and when you see all the high prices listed say "Wow!!!", but then buried in this list of costly hotels, you find a well-reviewed hotel that is significantly cheaper than the rest? You wonder, is it too good to be true? Then you notice in the fine print (or upon check-in) that it has a shared bathroom, has only one twin bed, or is a youth hostel. Well, our lodgings in Savannah were the exact opposite, a reasonably priced flower in the middle of an overpriced dessert. * Thunderbird Inn: This place was 50% cheaper than almost any other hotel in the Savannah historic district, but yet gets a very respectable 8.6 on booking.com. I used the third protocol in The After Action Report: The Lodging Protocol to book this place. First, I made a fully cancellable reservation at the Best Western Savannah Historic District for $134/night (tax incl). Later, when 15 miles out from Savannah inbound, I checked booking.com and noticed the Thunderbird Inn at $104/night, I immediately booked it and then canceled the Best Western. Viola! The Thunderbird Inn is a 1950s style two-story motel, with bright pastel colors, piped in 50s music, and a free Krispy Kreme donut each morning, that is located on the western edge of the Historic District. Its spacious rooms are super clean (with modest, but super clean bathrooms). It's across the street from the Savannah Bus Station, which fortunately deters some from booking it (winning!). Each room comes with two cans of RC Cola which were used to make Thunderbird Cuba Libras. I had one very minor issue with my stay, which I only bring up so I could work in a European travel connection. The light switch on the inside of the Thunderbird Inn bathroom was motion-activated, which reminded me of Europe. Every bathroom in Europe has the light switch on the outside of the bathroom. Now think about it. If the light switch is on the outside and you are sleeping with someone, how can you turn on turn on the bathroom light without lighting up the entire bedroom? What happens is you close the bathroom door until your arm is just barely able to fit between the door and the jamb, then you flip the switch on, and attempt to pull your arm into the bathroom at the speed of light. When I mentioned the idea of putting the light switch on the inside of the bathroom to various European hoteliers, they all looked at me like I was loca, verrückt, fou, gek, őrült or lud. www.afteractionreport.info read more

My senior Pastor had made reservations to this Inn and when he arrived he asked for a parking spot because it was on a weekend and it was busy but the Inn asked him if he reserved a parking spot but it was no where in the reservation to reserve a parking spot. Normally if you have a hotel room you should have a parking spot but the Inn had reserved all of their parking spots to outside folks and didn't save spots for their hotel customers. Which is ridiculous. Make sure if you stay here you call them to save you and reserve a parking spot or you are straight out of luck, or park in the street or in a parking garage in a bad area a block away. This inn should take their customers safety in consideration. read more

Cute and quaint hotel. They use "retro" to describe minimalist. Staff was nice. The OJ and apple juice was watered down. Did smell a bit moldy. Close to SCAD dorms. The parking is $15 I feel like I paid for the room at least give us parking. Anyway would stay again if we took 1 car. read more

The quirky motel is immaculately clean and inviting from the exterior. Upon checking that inviting feeling disappears if you have the unfortunate luck of experiencing the hostility of supervisor Leslie. Her knack of showing her disapproval of dealing with you is made abundantly clear. We love the location and the remainder of the staff goes above and beyond to make you feel comfortable. We've stayed several times in the past trying not to let one bad apple spoil the entire batch. However not sure we want to pay money to be treated as an inconvenience anymore. read more

Pros: A fun place to stay. My daughter (14) and I were in Savannah for 2 nights and the Thunderbird is the perfect location within walking distance to the historic district, SCAD as well as the welcome center for two popular tour companies. The parking fee is $15 per night but I didn't mind the charge as you literally don't have to drive your car anywhere. There is music playing for the better part of the day, there is free lemonade and popcorn 24/7 along with complimentary Krispy Kreme donuts of different varieties for a few hours each morning. Cons: This is NOT a quiet motel so if you are a light sleeper you might want to book elsewhere. Even after the music goes off you will hear the traffic and the bus station announcements (station is across the street) as well as other guests walking by who have no regard for how loud they are being. This is also a pet friendly motel so be prepared for barking. Our last night, the dog next door literally barked, cried and scratched for HOURS after it's owner left him behind for the night. I was exhausted traveling to my next destination. Also, the heating/AC unit in the room was filthy...when we turned it on dirt and dust actually flew out. I probably wouldn't have noticed but I woke up the first morning of our stay with a major sinus headache and the noticed how gross it was. All in all....id stay again definitely (but I'd clean the heating/ac unit myself). read more

LOVE the Thunderbird Inn. Clean, fun place! Staff helpful and friendly! I loved every minute of my stay!

Stayed here twice so far. Great place to stay! The bed is so comfortable that we always wake up behind schedule. Donuts for breakfast!!! This place is dog friendly and they do a great job at that. We love little retro boutiques like this!! Right next to downtown and right next to the highway. Definitely our go to place to stay for the halfway point of our trip back and forth. read more

Let me first say that I was born in this city . I am accutely aware of the danger that the location of this Inn presents all of it's customers. Not only that but even all the other businesses in this congested area. It is true on any given day a man, woman or child may be accosted at any location in any part of the city. But I will say that in this area of Savannah Georgia you are putting yourself and your family at a greater risk.. this is good advice, saving a few extra dollars is not worth putting yourself or your family in a dangerous situation. read more

Really mixed feelings on this one. First of all, we stayed here one night, as we were having a quick visit to Savannah and mostly just needed a clean place to sleep. However, we decided to stay here because it is advertised as "uber pet friendly" and, more importantly, Mark Thomas (the guy who apparently runs the place) agreed to do an interview with us for our podcast, Have Dog, Will Travel (we showcase dog friendly places). Well, he totally boned us. And I don't mean he pulled a last-minute cancellation on us. No, that'd be some grown up stuff. Mark just ghosted us like a 20 year old girl. Agreed to do an interview and then just didn't respond at all to 3 texts and 3 phone calls. Classy. Now, the place itself is pretty cool. It has a "groovy, 60's retro" kinda vibe. As mentioned aplenty already, they have RC Cola and Moonpies waiting for you in your room when you check in. That was cool. Bed was comfy. Pillows were square, which wasn't great. Bathroom fan ran constantly and there was no way to turn it off. Lame. The outside facing wall did next to nothing to keep out outside noise, so that sucked. I probably slept about 4 hours over the course of 8 hours of trying. The location is great. You could walk to some great Savannah locations within about a mile from the hotel. Parking: they charge you $15 to park IN THEIR OWN LOT! WTF?!? That just doesn't make a damn bit of sense. Regarding their "uber pet friendly" claims: Sure, they allow pets, and they give you a big dog treat when you check in. Cool. Also, if you let them know in advance that you're bringing your dog, they'll put a dog bed and food/water bowls in your room. And they have a little grassy area for dogs. And a container of dog treats on the check-in counter! Great! But here's the thing: THEY CHARGE YOU $50 TO BRING YOUR PET! Seriously?!? Don't act like you love dogs when you charge a non-refundable $50 fee when someone brings one. Even better, after multiple calls where I made it very clear I was bringing a dog, no mention was made about the fee. Even when I got my confirmation email with all kinds of fine print and FYI, still no mention of the pet fee. Not until I checked in was I told about how this "uber pet friendly" establishment charges a fee for bringing your pet. To their credit, the fee did get waived. The otherwise rather unfriendly front desk clerk named Jim took care of it. Kudos to Jim. Oh, and they also brag about a "comprehensive list of Savannah's pet friendly places." Apparently that's a thing they don't actually have anymore....but they still state that they do. They actually did have Krispy Kreme donuts for breakfast, and that was fantastic. In short, it wasn't a horrible experience, but could've (and should've) been better. I guess that pretty much sums it up. If you've made it this far, I'm proud of you for being a "reader." read more

Thunderbird Inn - Stella's expression here kinda sums up my feelings on this experience. - Hotels Near Me - Savannah, Georgia

TLDR: convenient location, friendly staff, doughnuts for breakfast & clean room with cold AC! After researching places to stay in Savannah, I fell in love with the retro vibe of this quaint little hotel. I was very much looking forward to our stay & booked months in advance paying ahead of time. When we arrived and went to check in we encountered an issue bc the credit card I originally payed with had to be replaced (there was suspicious activity & the credit card company sent me a new card a few weeks ago). Apparently the policy here is you must check in with your ID confirmation number & the original card. So we ended up paying again and will wait to see if the refund goes through. This was the only negative part of our experience, yet a rough start to our stay. The staff was super kind about it, but the policy is a bit ridiculous as it was already paid for in full. The location is a 10min walk to the fountains and all the bars restaurants ect. They provide a great assortment of doughnuts, coffe and juices in the morning. As well as popcorn made fresh throughout the day. The showers have refillable shampoo, body wash & conditioner which is way better for the environment than those small single use toiletries found in most hotels! Overall a great experience but, maybe they should look into finding better ways to work with each situation when it comes to credit cards as my sister also had to repurchase her room on another credit card after getting married and changing her name. This is both annoying for customers and extra steps for the staff to have to refund and rerun new credit cards. read more

I searched for hotel with free parking and thunderbird came up. But they charged 15 dollars per day and said it's my own fault for not reading the fine print. Stayed here the last night of a road trip coming from Philly. Adorable hotel. Love the music in the parking lot. Staff is very friendly. Rooms are perfect! Clean. Parking is $15 but if you really wanted to you could park on the street. I paid and they let our car stay all day the next day for free. Super cool place to stay in Savannah. There were only a few issues with our stay. First, our sink did not drain properly. After the donuts arrived at 9:45am, the staff took 15 donut boxes to the back room. When planning our honeymoon road trip a few months ago, it was the Thunderbird that brought Savannah to my attention. They were offering a Groupon & I thought it was adorable. I will say that when purchasing the Groupon I ran into a few issues. I called first to see if I could use it on weekends. I was told yes, but all the rooms that were available on Groupon were already booked. I was bummed, but when I saw it was still listed on Groupon a month later I decided to try & book it. I'm so glad it went through and that I didn't listen to the person who answered the phone that evening. When purchasing some souvenirs in the gift shop the employee I dealt with wasn't aware of the Yelp 10% check in offer either. No biggie, but if you're going to offer online deals like that I would make all staff aware. It's so cute & walking distance to everything. We had no problem with our room. It was clean & what you would expect from a little retro motel. I immediately started snapping photographs. I also loved how they play oldies music throughout the parking lot. My husband & I fell in love with Savannah & will definitely stay at the Thunderbird Inn again. read more

My wife and I needed a place to stay one night on our way from Philadelphia to Orlando. We could not of chosen a better place to stay! I want to just go through a few details that people have brought up in past reviews that were not an issue at all for us. Rooms: As soon as we arrived we were greeted nicely and were informed we received a free upgrade to the Deluxe King Room. This room was beautiful compared to some motels I have seen before. It easily gave any Days Inn or Embassy Suites a run for their money. (see attached pictures) As for noise... you are in a city... the random car horn you might here is expected; with the AC on we did not hear any noise from outside. Parking: Some people complained about the $7.50 a night parking... but after a 10 minutes search through other hotels in the area, they are actually the cheapest. The other hotels had $20.00 minimum to self park. Far chance for parking for free in the city of Savannah. On another note, we drove a 2011 Jeep Compass on our trip and had plenty of room between each space in the parking lot. O yea.. we were informed right away about the parking charge. Location: The location of this Inn was perfect. We chose Uber for a ride to the River. It was a $5.00 total trip and took less than 5 minutes to get to the main area in town. After our night and a few drinks we actually walked back to our room and it was a breeze once we learned the area! Only CON from our stay: We were woken by our smoke detector low battery alert going off every few minutes. I went down to the front desk @ 4:30am and was provided a new battery right away. I'm sure this is something maintenance should of handled.. but being a grown adult I popped the new battery in and went back to sleep. The chance of this happening again to someone else is slim to none. GIVE THIS PLACE A CHANCE!!! read more

I think the hotel is very cool. However, if you are going to advertise being open and I read all these great reviews. I'm a healthcare worker that needed to get away. Get here, the bathroom shower is not clean, we had to wash out the ice bucket with hand soap. My feet turned black from the floor and I had to put on my socks. Not greeted with RC or Moon pies in the room (how does Covid prevent this?) get up no Krispy Kreme's either! Excuse? Covid! Again I am a healthcare worker and Krispy Kreme is open! They offered them free to us at Levine's Cancer Institute everyday! Thought I could get away and relax. These are excuses! This isn't a fancy place at all, but it met our expectations in terms of the room and location, while exceeding our expectations in how friendly and professional customer service was. For what it is, the Thunderbird Inn met my expectations. Check-in was a breeze and the staff was kind and helpful when we asked for recommendations for lunch. I booked my room through Groupon with no issues. Our room was clean but definitely on the smaller side. Loved the retro feel of everything. The bed was super comfy and that was nice. A couple of minor annoyances, our room (105) was in the very bottom corner of the L-shaped building shoved tight in front of the stairwell and the ice machine and immediately next to housekeeping. So, in a nutshell, it was noisy. People rudely filling ice chests at 7 am and housekeepers making a racket not long after sun-up made for an early morning. Ask for another room if you can. Breakfast is a selection of Krispy Kreme donuts, coffee and juice which, for my purposes, was fine but don't plan on having a heathy meal ;) with so many great places to eat in Savannah it didn't matter to me. Yeah I'd stay again, walking distance to everything, but I'd ask for a different room. read more

The staff is very friendly, and the aesthetic of the Inn as a whole is very cool. I liked the Krispy Kreme and coffee every morning, and the proximity to the market and River street are a plus. For the price, it's a good deal to stay and check out. What we didn't like was our room, not because it was unclean or had broken items (besides the extremely temperamental WiFi, or the $15 a day for parking), but because of its location. We had room 205, which is situated in the corner of the second floor, near one of two staircases to the second floor. It was also adjacent to the maintenance office and cleaning station. Each morning we heard people being extremely loud, either moving things around, or by yelling to each other from the floor below. Also, because we were next to the stairway, the light was right above our room's window, which made the room orange. read more

The fan was on all the time in the bathroom, that was really annoying! Using the bathroom in the middle of the night was horrifying. It was super cold (even though the heater was on, we had to keep the door closed because of the noise from the fan) plus the super bright light with a sensor that we had no controle over. I asked and one of the staff said all the rooms are connected with a central vent and there was nothing the could do. Retro, for sure. We picked this small inn in Savannah mostly because they're very pet friendly. 50$ non-refundable pet deposit, and your dog most be up to date on all vaccines (although no one checked our papers when we checked in). There were quite a few other dogs staying at the hotel while we were there, although I didn't see any cats. The nightly prices are very reasonable, and the hotel is clean and well kept. The hotel definitely has a very retro feel, down to the old school vibrating beds and primary colored tiny tile print in the bathroom. The beds and couches are basic but comfortable, and there is heating and a wall ac unit in each room. My only complaint really is the very spotty wifi, but I guess that's either true for retro form or due to the fact that we had a corner unit. The wifi was slow but consistent the first night, and then stopped working altogether on day 2 (as in phones and computers said they were connected to the wifi but no connectivity). All in all a good option for savannah if you are looking for a basic, clean, pet friendly hotel near the downtown area. read more
