Not to mention our kids became bored and not motivated due to the fact, the grand master likes to yell/scold at students even though, he doesn't really teach. Master Kim is the opposite of everything we've experienced. He's passionate, dedicated, professional, funny, down to earth, and caring/sensitive to other people's need. Overall, he's a man of integrity. There's no rigid contract. He focuses on quality, fun, and well-rounded students. We'll be around here at Southern CA tkd academy as long as our kids want to keep going. Update: 7-13-2019 Our kids all accomplished their goal and it's been a long journey, yet we still feel fond of Master Kim. Nothing has changed. Again, not only he's a wonderful instructor, but most importantly a true role model for instilling character values.

We also enrolled him in the summer camp, and it exceeded our expectations. The variety of activities kept the kids engaged, and the staff showed amazing energy and care throughout the long days. It's clear that the instructors truly love what they do and are invested in each child's growth. We're very grateful to have found this school and would highly recommend it to other families.

We love Master Lee and Master Jo!…read more We were looking for a TKD class and a friend from baseball/ school told us about Scholar Athlete. I was bummed bc their original location was literally 2 mins from our house but we decided to check them out anyway. I called and spoke with Master Jo. I told him we had 3 boys (friends) that were interested in trying. He told me about the amazing deal they were having in May ($50 for the month or 8 classes) The 3 boys started together and have been having a blast since. In the beginning, it's always overwhelming especially for 5 yr olds to walk in, as everyone else seems to know what they're doing and everyone is speaking Korean! But Master Lee and Master Jo ensured that ALL the new members had some focus time, felt welcomed, felt supported, and encouraged. About midway through our trial month the kids tested for their white belts, and the official membership was discussed. This part of the process is a bit strange -- They don't advertise their membership prices/ options. Only master Lee discusses this with you in his office. You can't write anything down or take a picture. Why that is? I don't know. But the pricing is very reasonable compared to other TKD places and karate places we had spoken to previously. You have the option to choose between 2 classes a week or 3. We started off with 2 but ended up switching to 3 because I wanted my kid to have more practice and retention esp in the beginning. Not only are they teaching TKD basics, there's so many more principals that are taught. Listening, respect, focus, and confidence. Discipline of course. The studio/ dojo itself is very minimal. It's not a big fancy place. It's in a strip mall that I normally wouldn't go to, but none of that really matters bc of the actual teachings and learnings. Now, we've also witnessed Master Lee disciplining some of his more senior students - and I'm not sure if I agree with the style in which he does that. I'm not to judge bc maybe that works, that's why he has so many great students - but I do wish that he didn't do it in front of the younger kids? It's weird. He equally belittles the older students (like his protoge's) but he's so encouraging and supportive of the students too. lol it's interesting to witness but just something to note. Oh yes the only real concern I would flag is that -- I wish they would CLEAN THE DAMN MATS. Our kid leaves with black feet every time and it's gross esp when they do stretches and puts their face down on it (I've literally told my kid to never ever put his face on it) Anyways we love it here!

The instructors do a great job at helping to keep the kids attention and focus while also making the class fun and silly at times. The entire studio is very clean including the bathrooms, which is always a plus. The seating are for family members to watch is nice and the studio has great AC for those hot summer days. Adult classes are challenging, great workouts, and the instructors focus on the individual - everything I look for. When my son started out here, he struggled with attention and discipline. I was struggling to find him something that would build his confidence in himself. Karate became the answer and now he is so much more disciplined, sets goals for himself. More importantly, he believes in himself and what he wants to achieve. Karate plays a role in that as he has to work hard to get to each new belt. The Sensei's here really enjoy teaching karate, are patient, firm but kind. It's also a great community and they hold tournaments. My MAI review, 5 years in the making…read more.. We started our son at MAI as a little dragon over 5 years ago, and in that time he earned his Shodan/1st degree black belt (an exciting milestone in his life-long Karate journey). We are so pleased to see all of the positive growth that karate at MAI has given him. Through his karate journey he has learned self-defence and the importance of being physically active. He has developed confidence, discipline, and respect for himself and others. The MAI Senseis/instructors are a great team. They all have a passion for karate that really comes through as they teach. I always appreciate that they want all the kids/students to succeed and at the same time hold them accountable. The instruction/material taught at MAI is rooted in traditional Okinawan Karate. There is an emphasis on practical/real life use, and the karate techniques taught are pressure tested through controlled sparring. After watching our son train here for 4 years, I was finally motivated to start training in the adult class. The instructors, senseis, and fellow students have all been very welcoming and encouraging. It has been rewarding to see the changes in myself, and I always look forward to class days. The dojo ownership changed hands last year. It has been exciting to see the improvements and energy Sensei Butler, Sensei Quan, and Christina have made as they continue the MAI legacy.
