This is my unapologetically biased review of Teragi Jujitsu Academy. My two kids, my wife, and I all train here. If this review sounds like a love letter to this gym, it's because it is. The owners, professors, and coaches have cultivated a superb gym culture. This gym is safe, friendly, and supportive. The facility is modern and clean, and they've invested in a foam block subfloor beneath the mats for softer landings. As far as I know, this is the only gym in the area that offers women-only classes four times per week and a bi-monthly community open mat for gentlemen 40 years and older. My kids train here after school 4-5 days a week, and they love it. The kids' professors and coaches are experienced and amazing teachers. I'm especially thankful for the young coaches who were so patient and kind to my boys when they were hesitant and shy after first starting. And my pocketbook is especially thankful for the discounted rates for additional family members. If you're looking for a place where the whole family can train, grow, and feel welcome, I can't recommend Teragi highly enough. read more

My son has been attending Teragi for the last two years, so this review has been long overdue. The most important thing for myself was sending my child to a self defense art that actually applied practical methods of protecting oneself as well as a place that exemplified respect and self dependence. I've been to places where it seemed salesy or lacking authenticity. Teragi Academy is a place where they genuinely practice and instill jiu jitsu and its culture of honor and regard of others. The promotion of belts is carried out quarterly and only awarded based on merit. This is also something I greatly appreciate because I know many establishments that give out promotions for no reason at all. Since day one, the professors and coaches of this gym have been patient and meticulous in teaching techniques to the kids. Teragi has been instrumental in providing confidence as well as self awareness for my son. I've seen many of the other kids mature in their own ways for the past 2 years. It's always a wonder to see everyone come up together. For myself and my family, we seen so much growth and discipline in our boy. There's a comfort in knowing that our child is not left helpless and able to stand up himself as well as for others. I've been watching in the sidelines, two to three times a week, for the last 2 years. This is a program that provides a worthwhile experience. My kids attended the summer program for the past two summers, and it was watching them learn jiu-jitsu in a safe, controlled environment with attentive and skilled instructors that made me want to start learning jiujitsu as well. The staff for the summer program and after school program are fun and responsible and my kids always enjoy their time with them. Teragi is a little far for me so it's my home away from home and I try to do drop in classes whenever I have the chance. I always learn something new and helpful that I can take back to my home gym. The other guys in the class are always welcoming and friendly so I recommend anyone to drop in. It's also one of the nicest facilities I've seen with a large rolling area and a side area with tables and couches for kids to hangout and wait if I'm doing an adult class. My son recently finished two weeks of summer camp at Teragi and he loved it. His only complaint was time passed by too quickly. Although it isn't close to home, it was definitely worth the drive. The facility is beautiful, staff is awesome and my son had an amazing time. He looked forward to going every day! Since I was in the area to drop off my son, I stayed for a couple drop-ins myself. The ladies in the women's only class were very welcoming. It was nice to be in a group of ladies that were uplifting. Professor Marianna, Coach D., Coach Greg and the other professors and coaches in adult and kids classes were patient and took their time to make sure students were understanding what was being taught. I especially love that kids classes and adult classes ended with live rolls. What's learned through pressure of live rounds cannot simply be taught. It's been over 2 years since my family found Teragi. As our kids have continued to train consistently and become more skilled, we continue to feel confident in the instruction from the professors and coaches. They are not only incredibly knowledgeable, but also patient, encouraging, and great at adapting to all ages and skill levels. In addition to the amazing kids' program, Teragi offers a such an incredible women's program that makes me feel safe and most importantly excited to learn jiujitsu. I've become close friends with a lot of the other women who train as well. As a mom of 3 and in my late 30s, I didn't think I'd discover a love for a new sport while also finding so many other women in a similar walk of life as me. Excellent place for jiu jitsu, kids and adults alike! Though I have no experience with the no-gi program, I can attest to their excellence in dedication to teaching, listening to feedback, and professionalism in the gi program. There are always adults (coaches & professors) present to make sure kids are safe and there is no shortage of jiu jitsu knowledge. Teragi is a great place to train for both hobbyists and competitors! A very tight community, they're always supporting each member and present to support and encourage. They have been rapidly growing in numbers, which speaks to their excellence and value. I signed up my teenage daughter here because they have four women's only classes a week. I was looking for a place for my daughter to start with and learn the basics during summer break before traveling. She is doing well and really enjoying the classes! The teacher and classmates are all really friendly and supporting, the staff is also helpful and welcoming, and the studio is really awesome! She likes it so much that she would like to continue during the school year. The restorative Yoga classes are a great complement to the jiujitsu classes. I like to attend the Yoga classes with her and sometimes the Yoga instructors bring sound bowls for an atmospheric healing experience. I wish I could attend the jiujitsu classes also but I have severe joint injuries that have not healed yet. read more

My 4 yo refused to do sports of any kind, couldn't sit still for more than a few minutes at best, and has a speech delay. From day 1 Teragi was friendly, welcoming, accommodating, and patient with him. We're on month 3 now and he has transformed into a new child - verbal, pays attention, follows directions, and having a BLAST in every class. He asks to attend class everyday. My daughter and I both attend classes now at Teragi also. Instructors and fellow students are easy going, not egotistical, and helpful. The team goes out to learn your name, your kids names, your spouse and other family members. They are creating a great space and environment in Fullerton and the surrounding areas. I see the more seasoned classmates helping out my daughter, showing her the ropes. These classmates do this without any direction from their parents or instructors. That is testament of the type of high caliber families at this organization. Teragi also handles after school care for kids, women's only classes, and yoga. We signed up my son with Teragi for their kids' bjj classes and I have been so impressed by this organization. From their instructors to their management, they provide a human touch to teaching bjj to kids and adults. My son is more cautious than most, and jiujitsu wasn't something he took to naturally, but the coaches and professors were patient with him and provided an environment where kids can help each other learn and play together. Teragi's adult classes have been great as well. My wife joined for the women's classes and now loves it more than my son. My kids and I have been going to Teragi for a few weeks now and can't be happier with the decision of joining this community. They truly care about the individuals that are attending this BJJ gym. My kids love working out and learning self defense here with the coaches. The coaches also are very patient in teaching the kids and going over each moves but also making sure they follow the values in teaching kids respect and confidence. Teragi also offers afterschool program that my kids are involved in as well. Donna, Toni and the team who are in charge of the operations for pickups have been beyond wonderful. My kids' school was originally not part of their route but they were able to formulate a plan to include them as part of the pickup route daily. The teachers who teach and watch over the kids to aid and guide them through academics and homework have also been great. My kids are learning how to read new words, finishing homework more efficiently and learning each subjects better than before. Overall, I would highly recommend this place. The people here are just genuine and kind. It's hard to find true and kind atmosphere in anywhere you go these days but Teragi is definitely a place where they practice and preach that value read more

I came to Teragi because I was looking to change up my workout routine. I heard from friends they offered women's classes and that's what drew me in. I really wanted to find a gym that was closer to home but I came to discover that a jiu jitsu women's program is hard to come by. The staff and members are very supportive and welcoming. I was blown away by how much assistance and attention I was receiving to get me started. Without their extra care for new comers, people could easily become overwhelmed or turned away. My children have also started taking classes and they enjoy it. We appreciate that Teragi offers kids classes by age as well as different skill levels. This might be the easiest 5 star review to write. Since starting Jiu Jitsu at Teragi, my kids have had increased strength and coordination which can translate to other sports and activities. In just a short 4 months of being enrolled their confidence have sky rocketed from learning life lessons and Jiu jitsu from their world class black belt instruction. They've mentally overcome initial challenges that come with the sport and have become comfortable with being "uncomfortable". Professor John Ramos, Thomas Kim, Donna Ramos, and Toni Kim have built a business that put kids and women at the forefront. A humbly cool studio with a cast of true BJJ enthusiasts as coaches -- you really cannot ask for anything more than that. But there's surprisingly a lot more you can expect: a deeply rooted family studio with two sets of families that own the spot (John, Donna, Toni, and the 4th I haven't yet met), a true 16 year Brazilian veteran that's likely had a BJJ roll before her first Sushi roll (Prof. Maya), and a cast full of their own kids that are already BJJ gods, all in one location!! If you're looking for a family environment with a team full of PURE flowing BJJ technicians, then you absolutely have found it. As for ... Design: a strong sense of flow, with plenty of matt-side seatings that's sufficient for spectating family members. Deals: you get a free week trial, which I did. Cleanliness: as clean as you can get with two wives on deck that are keen on keeping the studio looking crispy. Nursery: tutoring available if babysitting is a concern. Vibes: warm and welcoming, down to earth. I felt a strong sense of power and grace that I feel every human can gain in this studio. That's it! A friend of ours introduced us to Teragi when we were searching for a new Jiu Jitsu gym for our son. It's an intimidating sport, but the instructors are so great at being nurturing, yet teaching the kids discipline. My son's personality is on the meeker side, but we see him becoming more confident and assertive as he is starting to retain more of the moves. We are excited to watch him continue to grow and will be starting our daughter in the summer. Teragi also has an amazing women's program. I joined to learn the sport alongside my son as well as learn some self defense skills. It's a diverse group of women that I've come to love. I've had several people tell me that it is rare to find a group of women you can train with, especially as a beginner. I've never experienced this level of exhaustion and soreness, but also a deep sense of accomplishment even as a white belt. If anyone has been on the fence, I highly recommend giving the sport and the gym a try. At the very least, it's an amazing way to relieve stress! read more

Teragi is the one, ladies and gents. I signed up for their 3 month special when they first opened up. Loved it so much I signed up for 1 year and am coming to the end of that year. Here's the run down. Vibe: The chillllest. First off, I've never been to an established gym where you can wear any schools gi/nogi. How awesome is that?! I love having options and I dislike when I have to remove patches to use my gi and I spent money on a lot of gis/rashguards from different places. I've never seen a professional gym do this for this long so it's interesting to see this last. Well organized and only getting better over time. I feel comfortable and feel safe here. No one has tried to rip my foot or arm off to get me to tap. Ages: Very well rounded. Teragi has got a strong children's program. I don't have the details on it but the class ends when the adults class begins. So I've seen how large those classes are. They also have a lot of high school kids. Mainly at the nogi classes. All of them have been very kind. A few aggressive ones but that's expected. Many of them come from the local high school wrestling team. Some(maybe all?) of the owners kids are/were in the high school wresting team with impressive skills. Also one is a female wrestler. I'm on the older side (41 at the time of writing) and I love that there's a good number of other casual rollers around my age. Mainly in the gi classes so far. Main Professor: John Ramos is the head Professor and is an awesome guy. Obviously a skilled man but I love that he shows us that he is also open to learning new skills. He's kind and really cares about his students. I've rolled with him and appreciate that he gives me tips for my game afterward our rolls. Coaches/ professors: Wide variety of coaches from different grappling backgrounds which some are still competing. I love it. They also got wrestling coaches, kick boxing coaches, and yoga instructors. Classes: Morning classes are more intense. You're def gonna get a great workout in any class but the morning is the one if you're wanting to really get in shape. They're smaller classes due to the time but they are awesome. I generally go to the BJJ gi classes. More people my age, but it's a mix of every age for sure. Nogi classes are probably the largest class. All kinds of skill levels white to black. Wrestling class are great! A great compliment to your BJJ game. I'm still new but it's helped me understand the takedown game. Wrestling now has a place in my heart. Recommend this! A very strong women's jiu jitsu class. Obviously never attended but I've seen the class. Some now attend the general BJJ class. It's always awesome to see the progress. Muay Thai was super fun. I haven't gone in a while but it had a chill vibe and was a great change up for me. I've been to one yoga/recovery class and I enjoyed it. Unfortunately it just doesn't match my schedule. Customer service: Two Families own the gym and they all take care of this. I worked with Thomas from the beginning and he's helped me so much. They've all been the best and have went out of their way to work with me since I travel a lot. A+ Brand New Facility: beautifully designed school. Location is great too. Mats are nice and kept clean daily. The other half is the Teragi afterschool program. I don't know much about it but it seems popular. Great for parents. Anything else?: - I wish there were more classes in the early mornings and afternoon. But it's a very new school that's growing so I'm sure the schedule will continue to change as the school grows and sees a need for the classes. - Unfortunately no showers. But to be fair, most schools don't. - Parking can get packed so you may need to park slightly further. But there is plenty of nearby parking. - They don't haze if you forget to bring something. Just ask and they'll accommodate if they can! -all payments are done on their phone App. Very convenient. -great communication and updates in class and over email. For point of reference, I'm 41, salary man, Blue belt 3 stripes. So, not a complete newbie and I roll casually for the lifestyle. I move a lot so I've been to many schools and Teragi has been the most chillest, most Versatile, and most inviting school I've been to thus far. A friendly community of families and professionals. I have been attending the women's class at Teragi and I am loving it. This class has given me so much confidence and strength. The best part is the community of women who are incredibly sweet and welcoming. It's such a non-intimidating environment. Even my little ones, who are aged 5 and 8, love going to class after school. We were looking for a jiujitsu gym for my 5yo son and this was the first one recommended to us by a friend! And BOY are we so glad we found this place! They have been so patient with my son as he was a complete beginner with no knowledge of BJJ. He is progressing slowly but surely, and I'm so proud of the progress he's made at this gym. It's teaching him more than just jiujitsu technique, but how to be a good partner, how to listen to instruction, and the bonus is all the friends he's made along the way! The staff, coaches, professors have all been amazing- so patient & encouraging and have truly become our friends now. I joined the women's class a few months after my son and it's been amazing to be learning the same thing as him. This place truly deserves 5 stars! It seems to be a family run business but it functions like a well-established studio business. The facilities and amenities are clean, modern, and functional. The mats are clean and you don't feel gross walking barefoot on them. The bathrooms are clean and actually really nice. They have ample changing areas and the gym itself doesn't smell like BO like a lot of places. I was actually late to class but they were chill and not passive aggressive or rude about it. I felt very welcomed and not intimidated at all even tho I didn't even have the wrestling shoes or anything for the wrestling class I was taking. It doesn't seem to be required unless you actually sign up but I'm not 100% sure. Coach Daryl is very patient and knowledgeable even tho I truly had no experience going in. He stayed kind and helpful without yelling at me or getting frustrated at my learning process. He made sure I felt comfortable and included in the activities my first day wherever possible. The other class members and staff were also equally friendly and not snobby (thank you Kathy and Donna!) As a woman it's hard to find MMA classes that feel safe and supportive, but the class was well mixed with all ages and fitness levels so it's truly beginner-friendly. There were other women there too so I would highly recommend this studio especially for women looking to study MMA! read more

As a parent I wanted my boys to train jiu jitsu to learn and apply the valuable life lessons that could help them become humble, confident, young men. I visited several gyms and always felt like something was missing. When I visited Teragi for the first time, I was impressed with the attention to detail in the mat area, seating area and overall gym. But what really impressed me was when I met and spoke to the owners, professors and coaching staff. I immediately sensed their passion to teach and spread the gift of jiu jitsu. I have wanted my kiddos to take BJJ lessions for a long time. I had the opportunity to check this place out and it has exceeded all of my expectations. First the Owners are some of the best people I have met. Their knowledge and passion for BJJ is amazing. The instructors are both extremely knowledgeable and personable for the kids or adults.
