As a mom, I believe it's so important for children to learn basic self-defense not because I expect something bad to happen, but because I want them to have the confidence and skills to protect themselves if they ever need to. At first, my boys were nervous and intimidated. We visited a few schools before making a decision, but from the moment we walked into Teragi, we knew this place was different. Everyone made us feel like family. The professors and coaches are exceptional not only because of their experience and skill, but because they genuinely care about every child. They encourage, support, and meet each child where they are. I especially want to mention my youngest. Jiu-jitsu didn't come naturally to him at first, and he struggled to understand the techniques. The professors and coaches were incredibly patient and never made him feel like he was behind. They allowed him to learn at his own pace, and now it's amazing to see how much his confidence and skills have grown. That patience meant so much to our family. There's no pressure for kids to be the best. Every child learns differently, and the professors and coaches truly understand that. Since we homeschool, Teragi has become more than just a place to train. My boys have made wonderful friendships, and we've found an incredible community. I also have to mention how clean the academy is! It never has that old gym smell and is always welcoming. I've watched both of my boys grow not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. They're more confident, disciplined, and respectful. If you're on the fence about jiu-jitsu because you don't like the idea of your child being on the ground, I completely understand. I felt the same way. But the reality is that many real-life self-defense situations end up on the ground, and knowing what to do can make all the difference. Thank you, Teragi, for creating such an incredible environment for our children. We are so grateful to be part of the Teragi family, and I couldn't recommend this academy more.

The owners, professors, and coaches have cultivated a superb gym culture. This gym is safe, friendly, and supportive. The facility is modern and clean, and they've invested in a foam block subfloor beneath the mats for softer landings. As far as I know, this is the only gym in the area that offers women-only classes four times per week and a bi-monthly community open mat for gentlemen 40 years and older. My kids train here after school 4-5 days a week, and they love it. The kids' professors and coaches are experienced and amazing teachers. I'm especially thankful for the young coaches who were so patient and kind to my boys when they were hesitant and shy after first starting. And my pocketbook is especially thankful for the discounted rates for additional family members. If you're looking for a place where the whole family can train, grow, and feel welcome, I can't recommend Teragi highly enough.

The fact that we learn something that can be applied to your own life is what gravitated me to this martial arts. Preparing your own self awareness, figuring out how to adapt to different situation, and just knowing that you control your own fate is what appealed to me. That is what Coach Jeff promotes, the dynamic approach to this martial arts, that no one answer will be absolute, and to ultimately be the best version of yourself. Currently my youngest son attends classes, and gives him the lessons of life to be more mature, and be responsible for others. Little kids can get nervous to getting hurt, it's new, it's physical. But after a few classes, he understand it's all a game for now, his teammates challenge him, but not try to hurt him. It's fun to do, and also rewarding for the mind and body. There are also other alternative classes under the monthly membership plans, such as Thai Kickboxing, Eskrima, Physical wellbeing classes for the older groups, and wrestling for all ages. I recommend this class if you are someone that wants something outside the box, challenging, fun, and want a coach/team that inspires you to do better. Not a McDojo, where you are forced to dress a certain way, or do some repetitive dance like move for protection. This is actual everyday application that you can use for self defense.

But we spent alittle over $300 there on everything! There is a $35 or $45 entrance fee depending on when you come. It's just to come inside the lagoon. If you want the obstacle course it's an additional $10 per person for 55 mins (super short). If you want to kayak, use the aqua bike or use the paddleboard it's an additional $10 per equipment/item. There is a kiddie area for small and young children. They DO NOT allow outside food or drinks except water! There is a small shop that sells misc. items, snacks & drinks (overpriced). They also had a foodtruck inside that was expensive and the meals didn't come with drinks. They do have plenty of staff and lifeguards there. The entrance fee should of been $15-20. The obstacle course atleast 90-120 mins instead of the 55 mins. Wish the foodtruck came with drinks and was a bigger portion.

An unexpected highlight for us was catching skytyping that was announcing Olivia Rodrigo's new album, "you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love," which is scheduled for release on June 12, 2026. We were craning our necks for a cool 20 minutes trying to figure out what the message meant and I didn't figure it out until looking it up on Reddit when I got home. Not exactly standard park entertainment, but definitely memorable. Also worth noting, right across the street we came across a full Zumba class happening in a small private studio. Apparently it runs every Thursday evening with a $7.00 cover. If you're into that kind of thing, it could be a fun way to switch things up. All in all, Pearson Park knocked it out of the (local) park. It was interesting enough for me to consider adding it to my future routine and will absolutely be coming back.

I learned about Brazilian Top Team Long Beach ("BTT-LB) by coincidence while having dinner at a German restaurant and met Oscar (black belt) who just completed the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation World tournament at Long Beach. He informed me of "BTT-LB" and its family style atmosphere and world class jiu-jitsu training, Muay Thai boxing, MMA, & body conditioning. I made a point of stopping by "BTT-LB" and spoke with Professor & Head coach Marcelo Perdomo. I inquired about kid's jiu-jitsu classes for my 7-year-old grandson, and Professor Marcelo stated there is kid's Gi & No Gi jiu-jitsu and boxing classes. Great! Next, I asked if there were jiu-jitsu students with ages of 50 + years old? Professor Marcelo stated "yes" and pointed to an older male student who happen to be doing jiu-jitsu training that was in his late 40's with a hip replacement, knee and leg issues. There are other older "BTT-LB" students. Professor Marcelo was very informative, energetic, extremely polite and friendly. He offered my grandson and I a free 1-week trial to try it out and offered us use of his jiu-jitsu Gi's. After a free week trial both my grandson and I started in March 2018 (we are white belt). Professor Marcelo not only provides 1 to 1 instruction to both the kids and adult jiu-jitsu classes and he provides detailed explanation & instruction of jiu-jitsu. The kid's jiu-jitsu classes are taught by other "black belt" instructors Coach Sr; Alex; Arnel; and Coach Jr - brown belt, and Coach Warren - purple belt. Importantly, the kids are taught discipline, respect and good manners along with genuine concern for their learning the Brazilian jiu-jitsu art. The adult jiu-jitsu classes are started with a good warm up exercise along with exceptional instructions by black belt instructors with Professor/Head coach Marcelo. I've learned traditional Brazilian old-school jiu-jitsu as well as current jiu-jitsu moves. All higher belts are very helpful in giving good jiu-jitsu "tips" to the lower belts and all BTT-LB members treat each other with respect and in a family environment. The monthly cost includes all training venues (e.g. jiu-jitsu, boxing, MMA, & body conditioning.) Professor Marcelo provided yesterday his students a "free" jiu-jitsu seminar 2 1/2 hours. Normally, the jiu-jitsu seminar charges are $100.00 plus per hour. If your looking to join a great jiu-jitsu and other self defense classes, as well as great cardio workout in a friendly / family environment you won't be disappointed at Brazilian Top Team Long Beach! When I was looking for Jiujitsu gyms I wanted to find a place that was female friendly, safe, top quality training and affordable. Brazilian Top Team Fullerton is all that and more. Coach Jaysen is such a patient and knowledgeable coach in Brazilian jiu-jitsu that he's able to work with a diverse amount of individuals helping them succeed in their training and personal goals. His team has welcomed me along with providing the best training and a great experience I've been attending for over 6 months now . I've casually tried other Muay Thai gyms in the past, but they often suggested bag classes for women. Here you can choose from a variety of classes and there's an emphasis on both getting a good workout and learning the form of each movement. As a person with massive social anxiety because I'm definitely not a fast learner, I'm always worried when doing group classes and partner drills that I'm slowing people down. However, I've never taken a class here where I've felt judged by anyone. Everyone from the coaches to the other students are always super supportive and encouraging. There's a culture of students helping each other while coaches make sure everyone of all skill levels is being challenged. You also have the option of doing private training. If you're curious at all, try the intro session and I promise you that you won't regret at least trying.

SoCal Combat Club is great at not overlooking any one's training as Coach Danny is great at prioritizing all students some may have experienced getting overlooked at other gyms due to the sheer size of the classes and though there are plenty of high level jiujitsu and mma practitioners to learn and train with at SoCal Combat club the class size is the perfect amount as to not get lost in the crowd. I love seeing the kids getting stronger and learning discipline while they train! I didn't really know a lot about jiu jitsu before coming here! I walked in not even knowing what color comes after a white belt, and although I'm still so new, I'm excited to see how far I'll go! I really appreciate the gym offering a 2 week trail period for anyone (like me) who is new and just exploring their interest! Knowing I'm not alone is a huge factor that keeps me coming back (unlike my 24 membership-- a traditional gym was overwhelming for a beginner like me). I didn't realize the power of learning from those that have gone before you & ASKING QUESTIONS to truly understand why, as opposed to just going through some motions to burn calories. I love being connected to the coaches and other members! The coaches genuinely care about their members' improvement! What ultimately attracted me was understanding it's not just a workout but a mindset! You simultaneously strengthen your physical health as well as your mental capacity and toughness! Getting out of your comfort zone and trying anything new will always be challenging and strange at first but starting where you're at and staying consistent are the keys to success (in jiu jitsu yes but also every area of life you want to grow in!
