SoCal Combat Club is an excellent place to train if you want to get fit, make friends, gain…read moreself-defense skills, and feel confident knowing you can take care of yourself and your family. The What: If you want to learn striking, they offer kickboxing. If you want to learn grappling, they have Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). And if you want to be well-rounded, they teach mixed martial arts (MMA). The Who: The reason why you can learn such a wide array of combat sports is because of the owner and head instructor, Professor Danny Saurez. He is a true martial artist, having trained in everything from Judo and wrestling to Wing Chun and Kali. But of course, he is a world-class expert in BJJ, MMA, and kickboxing. As a former professional MMA fighter and a 4th-degree black belt in BJJ, he knows what it takes to win, having a versatile skillset and a strong championship mindset. But that doesn't mean you have to be a fighter to appreciate his teaching. Prof. Danny is one of the few elite-level instructors who is also an expert teacher -- he's physically talented, has real-world experience, and can adapt to each student (whether complete newbie or black belt) so they learn quickly. And the best part? He's funny, easy-going, and encouraging. The Where: The new SoCal Combat Club location in Anaheim is located in an industrial park, which is great because you don't get the random riff-raff who walk in and disturb a class like you would find at a strip mall location. It might be small-ish, but everything is new, clean, and well organized. And there's plenty of parking during the evening classes. Plus, it's close to the 57 and 91 freeways, so getting there is a breeze regardless of where you're coming from. The Why: There are many reasons to train here. You might start because you want to lose weight and get fit -- you will burn hundreds of calories per sessions, regardless of the style you try out. You might train because you want to learn how to defend yourself and your family or compete in amateur BJJ or kickboxing tournaments. But no doubt you'll stay because of the people. Prof. Danny and the SoCal Combat Club are so welcoming, supportive that it'll feel like you're a part of a family.

A few months in and we were almost going to give up as he was not making progress. However, after a quick chat with the Sensei, he made some adjustments that may seem little to him, but impacted our toddler and how we viewed each class. I have also seen other parents bring up concerns or feedback to the Senseis and instructors and noticed they do their very best to accommodate and/or adjust based on it. I also love the flexibility of the schedule. Some weeks we are busier than others but it is very nice that there's no need to call in or commit to specific days of the week. The times are perfect as well, especially for parents who might live further and don't get off work until 5pm. Each Sensei and instructor has been very patient, creative, and still fun with my toddler and other kids in the class. Every kid is so different yet they're able to manage the class with various personalities and energy levels. I also love that they do not exclude anyone! It is a safe space for any kid, young adult, or adult to build confidence and enjoy something where they are their own person. If you're unsure which dojo to try, they offer a free trial class so you can observe and get a feel for it.

Coach Nolan is an amazing striking coach and he will elevate your striking to the highest levels. The jiu jitsu programs are awesome. In terms of culture, the people and coaches create an environment where you can thrive. It's fun to be there and it caters to any level. If you're a first timer, you'll get taken care of. If you aspire to fight at the highest levels, you'll have coaches and talent to support you. I've made life long friends at this gym, and I'm thankful for it. Now the value... some gyms pin you down with 4 sessions a week or just 1 martial art. At this gym, you get unlimited classes to Gi BJJ, NoGi BJJ, Muay Thai, MMA, Wrestling, fitness. There's also a recovery room with things like red light therapy, massage boots, vibration plate, sauna, cold plunge, hyperbaric chamber. There's showers, lockers, and there's a coffee bar. Not to mention, a weight training area. So yea, you get way more bang for your buck. Also, if you're looking to fellowship, there's a weekly Bible study on Thursday nights. Open to anyone. I sound biased. And I am. But it's because of my experience at this gym.

When my son started out here, he struggled with attention and discipline. I was struggling to find him something that would build his confidence in himself. Karate became the answer and now he is so much more disciplined, sets goals for himself. More importantly, he believes in himself and what he wants to achieve. Karate plays a role in that as he has to work hard to get to each new belt. The Sensei's here really enjoy teaching karate, are patient, firm but kind. It's also a great community and they hold tournaments. I'm grateful for this dojo and the impact it's had on my son and the local community in building up both boys and girls in developing their skill in karate and believing in themselves.

My MAI review, 5 years in the making…read more.. We started our son at MAI as a little dragon over 5 years ago, and in that time he earned his Shodan/1st degree black belt (an exciting milestone in his life-long Karate journey). We are so pleased to see all of the positive growth that karate at MAI has given him. Through his karate journey he has learned self-defence and the importance of being physically active. He has developed confidence, discipline, and respect for himself and others. The MAI Senseis/instructors are a great team. They all have a passion for karate that really comes through as they teach. I always appreciate that they want all the kids/students to succeed and at the same time hold them accountable. The instruction/material taught at MAI is rooted in traditional Okinawan Karate. There is an emphasis on practical/real life use, and the karate techniques taught are pressure tested through controlled sparring. After watching our son train here for 4 years, I was finally motivated to start training in the adult class. The instructors, senseis, and fellow students have all been very welcoming and encouraging. It has been rewarding to see the changes in myself, and I always look forward to class days. The dojo ownership changed hands last year. It has been exciting to see the improvements and energy Sensei Butler, Sensei Quan, and Christina have made as they continue the MAI legacy.

This review has been long overdue, and I'm so glad I finally had the chance to write it…read more About a year ago, I decided I wanted my boys to start jiu-jitsu. As a mom, I believe it's so important for children to learn basic self-defense not because I expect something bad to happen, but because I want them to have the confidence and skills to protect themselves if they ever need to. At first, my boys were nervous and intimidated. We visited a few schools before making a decision, but from the moment we walked into Teragi, we knew this place was different. Everyone made us feel like family. The professors and coaches are exceptional not only because of their experience and skill, but because they genuinely care about every child. They encourage, support, and meet each child where they are. I especially want to mention my youngest. Jiu-jitsu didn't come naturally to him at first, and he struggled to understand the techniques. The professors and coaches were incredibly patient and never made him feel like he was behind. They allowed him to learn at his own pace, and now it's amazing to see how much his confidence and skills have grown. That patience meant so much to our family. There's no pressure for kids to be the best. Every child learns differently, and the professors and coaches truly understand that. Since we homeschool, Teragi has become more than just a place to train. My boys have made wonderful friendships, and we've found an incredible community. I also have to mention how clean the academy is! It never has that old gym smell and is always welcoming. I've watched both of my boys grow not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. They're more confident, disciplined, and respectful. If you're on the fence about jiu-jitsu because you don't like the idea of your child being on the ground, I completely understand. I felt the same way. But the reality is that many real-life self-defense situations end up on the ground, and knowing what to do can make all the difference. Thank you, Teragi, for creating such an incredible environment for our children. We are so grateful to be part of the Teragi family, and I couldn't recommend this academy more.

The owners, professors, and coaches have cultivated a superb gym culture. This gym is safe, friendly, and supportive. The facility is modern and clean, and they've invested in a foam block subfloor beneath the mats for softer landings. As far as I know, this is the only gym in the area that offers women-only classes four times per week and a bi-monthly community open mat for gentlemen 40 years and older. My kids train here after school 4-5 days a week, and they love it. The kids' professors and coaches are experienced and amazing teachers. I'm especially thankful for the young coaches who were so patient and kind to my boys when they were hesitant and shy after first starting. And my pocketbook is especially thankful for the discounted rates for additional family members. If you're looking for a place where the whole family can train, grow, and feel welcome, I can't recommend Teragi highly enough.

Bottom Line Up Front: I give this gym 5 out of 5 stars --…read moreand that says a lot because I've been training in martial arts since 1995 and am a certified instructor in multiple systems. But let me break it down as to why it gets my seal of approval. What You'll Learn: Rounders offers multiple martial arts: Boxing, Muay Thai (kickboxing), Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Kali (a Filipino knife-fighting system), and Mixed Martial Arts (which combines striking, wrestling, and Jiu-Jitsu). In the past they have also offered wrestling and Judo. So there's something for everyone. Regardless of what class you pick, you'll learn how to protect yourself while getting a great workout. What You'll Gain: Like I mentioned, you'll get a killer workout in a safe and fun environment. According to some studies, you could burn anywhere between 300 to 800 calories in a single 1-hour kickboxing class. It's far more efficient (and fun!) than running on a treadmill. And the added bonus is that you'll learn self-defense along the way. Who You'll Meet: From co-owner Joe Kim to all the other instructors, the coaches here are physically talented, knowledgeable, and easy-going despite being deadly warriors. They create a positive atmosphere so that everyone -- from brand new rookies to combat sports veterans -- has fun while learning. And that trickles down through to the students, who are all supportive and welcoming. The Space: The gym is medium-ish in size compared to other gyms in the area; enough to hold one large group or two smaller sessions at the same time. The equipment is top notch. And the workout space is well maintained. There's also a small section for weight training, too. The Cost: I've visited other gyms with outrageous prices (like $200 a month for only Jiu-Jitsu!). Fortunately, tuition here is reasonably priced -- with options to drop-in, go month-to-month, or commit to 6 months or a full year. (The latter two doesn't mean you have to pay upfront, just that you'll be charged automatically for your chosen time frame and save more over the long term.) And considering those options give you unlimited classes for all of the martial arts classes, Rounders is totally worth it. Conclusion: Rounders MMA Fullerton is an ideal gym to join, whether you're looking to lose weight, learn some self-defense, or just belong to a cool community who will encourage and grow with you.
