When spending the day in Haarlem we decided to stop here for a light lunch and beverage. I was delighted to see the many variety of fries. Usually that is how I pick my restaurants, by the fries! Here I had no idea about the fries before we sat down! I ordered the grilled cheese and husband got a chicken sandwich with fries to split. These were the BEST fries I've ever had. They were perfectly cooked. I could tell that they were double cooked as they should be for homemade fresh fries. I am so glad we didn't get a different variety of them so we could really experience the perfection of the taste! Oh and the grilled cheese and chicken sandwich were delicious too! Happened to come to Haarlem for a Yogic Breathing meetup and after that was over, headed towards the downtown area to find a place to eat. Passed a couple of places but the vibe of this restaurant seemed really happening and they had great pictures of their burgers in the window, so next thing we knew had walked in and were putting in our table orders. I decided to get a Burger Menu combo - burger, fries & a side dish for €16.50 and ordered the Asian Chicken Thriller and upgraded to Umami fries and small beet salad. My co-diner decided to do the same and got the Burger of the day along with Truffle paremesan fries and the Green Salad for her side. I enjoyed the chicken - was very well cooked, but initially the taste was too sweet for me. When got extra wasabi mayo, that bumped up the taste level for me. I didn't enjoy the Umami fries and the accompanying Black Garlic mayo was ok. The beet salad was a surprise as assumed it was more of a yogurt dressing but instead it was more like proper yogurt. This while tasty, didn't really fit into the rest of what I had ordered - I ended up having this as a dessert instead. Drink wise I got a ginger tea which was decent, but the glass I was served in was a bit dirty. Service was great, and the food was served very quickly. We split the bill and individual cost was €21 and change, so very reasonable. Also found out that the menu is prepared by a famous Dutch chef (a la Jamie Oliver) but he doesn't own the restaurant or anything, just changes the menu every 3-4 months. I was excited to try this place, as I love burgers. It was quite busy but we managed to get a table. I ordered the cheeseburger, fries and strawberry milkshake. Boy was I disappointed! The burger looked delish from the outside but the inside was raw. I asked the waiter if it was normal and he ordered a new one for me as he agreed it didn't look too good. Same story. I asked if the redness of the burger was standard (my friend's same order was perfect - medium, not raw!). He asked this same question to the manager (who was stood 3 steps away, didn't bother to look or come over and just said yes). I felt sorry for the waiter as he was trying his best unlike the manager. The milkshake tasted watery, so another let down. The only thing that was excellent were the fries, they were exceptional. When walking through Haarlem the other day, saw that we had a brand new burger place in Haarlem :) Walked in to see how it looked and have to say that the moment you get in, you smell the grill already :) We asked for the possibility of booking a table for that same night, but they told us you could not make any reservations. They also could not tell us how busy it would be, since they only opened 4 days before... We tried it during the evening and fortunately were able to get a seat right away, looking forward to some burgers :) The couple sitting next to us were not so happy, because everybody around them (who arrived later) already had gotten their food, while they were still waiting. Turned out that their ticket got lost in the kitchen unfortunately. From what we understood, they at least got a discount. Ordered the regular burger, some coleslaw, and some fries with the spicy mayo sauce and it was delicious! For sure a place we will visit more often, since they have some more burgers I need to try also :) read more

Second time around, the burgers have a lot more taste. Burgers, since one did not satisfy my hunger. Fries with feta cheese and truffle were very nice. But again: I got a burger with bacon when I specifically mentioned not wanting bacon. WOW. Second time here, second time the same mistake. Really very sloppy. The people next to us got told "the burgers are really coming soon". This was, too, reminiscent of my earlier visit when the burgers were taking a long time to arrive. Funny as burgers are not something that needs a lot of preparation. This leads me to conclude that the kitchen needs to get their act together and start working neatly and in harmony. read more

On a cold Wednesday evening, with miles and miles of touring on our feet, we found Thrill Grill to look appealing and comfortable. The staff greeted us warmly upon entering and promptly asked us what we wanted for drinks. My wife got "The Golden Gun Milkshake" and I got a Coke. She really loved the milkshake! Wish I had ordered one too. Since we tend to share our food, the staff cut the burgers in half and placed half of each on the plates for us. Wonderful service to keep us from making a mess cut them ourselves. The triple cheeseburger special was outstanding! The classic thriller burger was excellent as well. We share a basic order of fries, which was more than both of us could eat. An order of grilled zucchini round off our meal. No dessert on this trip. The black garlic sauce for the fries it's a heavenly addition to your meal, it's a little unusual colorwise but don't let that scare you because it's truly fantastic. For a Dutch restaurant I would consider Thrill Grill as a good one and above most of them in terms of quality. The meat is good and the atmosphere is very cool. The service takes too long but this is very normal in Holland as most of people working in restaurants have no Horeca background or are students. Although the overall comments is good and I would recommend it even if you don't like meat. There are chick and vegetarian burgers with house made fries. The location is also very nice. I am sure this place will have a good future in Haarlem. read more

TL; DR: I've had better for the price, and I'm disappointed especially because the founder is a multi-Michelin star chef. I've been in the Netherlands for a while and I keep getting disappointed by the "gourmet" burgers here. So, about Thrill Grill -- I really expected more from a burger joint founded by a chef who's run a 2-star Michelin restaurant before. I appreciate the variety in selection (they had beef, pork, and fish burgers, as well as fries, salads, desserts, and so on) but the classic double burger I had wasn't very interesting. The bun was too hard and not grilled (I don't think I've had a grilled bun in Holland), the meat was unevenly cooked (one side was rare but the other side was medium), and the burger itself was assembled haphazardly, like the kitchen was rushed (even though almost every patron in the dining room was about done with their dinners). The fries were pretty good, though, and it was nice that the restaurant stocks ginger beer. I might be back to try some of the other things (the burger with foie looks really interesting) but I'm deeply disappointed, especially with such a high end chef at the helm. So I waited to write my review until I truly had given them another chance and I wasn't so hungry....I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to give it 5..... so let's go into my two visit sampling of this new breath of burg-air (see what I did there )! Upon entry, you come into a place that is warm and inviting. In the night there is a buzz that is reminiscent of your local neighborhood staple. In the day your local diner (I'm from America so this means a lot)...and it helped that I so surpisingly stumbled on a friend of mine who now works here. It's like that regular who walks in and they greet them by name. Awesome! For groups, at night, this place isn't that ideal, I'm not sure if you can reserve, but there's is a feel of casual dining that this joint emotes from top to bottom, even with the at times "upper class" burgers, it's still very accessible fusion-dining of your classics (albeit a few burgers are a bit pricy. I feel as if one could take reservations it would detract from that casual dining experience! Major props for that feeling that you could just walk into a place! :) During the day there is more than enough room for groups so have a stroll right in! On both visits the one things you notice is the charcoal grill smell! As a man who LOVES bbqs, meat...oh did I mention meat? It's grand! The menu is broad, featuring burgers, hotdogs, shakes, and fries. Then it goes culinary with true foodie options of the aforementioned...including TRUFFLE FRIES omg...now this is where I mention another staple in my life...a little spot in napa, california called Carpe Diem. The menu is a taste of home to my taste buds! Not only truffle fries but a burger with Foie Gras! :-) There are also salads for you non carnivore inclined. Ok..so here's my -1star...fixable but minor. I ordered the Kranenbuger, the signature and the most expensive...it was so close, had the smooth richness of the liver not overpowered the rest of the toppings. I'm not a chef but I can understand when one flavor takes over. Second visit: I ordered the chien chaud hot dog. I got the hot dog, the gruyere cheese and a bun. However delicious it is/was I expected a bit more than just a hot dog on a plate..I get minimal, but at least some toppings (on the side...relish, or even grilled onions, would have been nice, maybe even a side of black beans). I'll give them the benefit of the doubt (the place has only been open for 3wks). But it's now the attention to the tightening of the screws to an already fabulous ship. It was way too early to grab a GT but I imagine they are good (I'm not too difficult with gin lol), but the banana milkshake was sooooo good! Minions would be lining up! All in all a great place, good food, juust gotta tweak, add, re consider, balance and or revisit a couple of things a bit to go from good to "the best damn place in town!" And get the coveted 5! A 'Rare or Well' Experience. Being from New York, I thought i would bring Harlem to Haarlem. They should be Thankful i toned it Way Down. I was Strolling on a Gorgeous Evening and Smelled what seemed to be some serious grilling. Along with the smell was a pleasing aesthetic, so i ordered what was described as a 'Meat Challenge'Burger, when delivered i said 'Holy Cow'and prayer i would need. if this burger was any more raw it would be Tartar. But the fries and the Corn on the cobb,along with my companion saved the meal. As Haarlem is the direct opposite of Harlem, i was left with limited choice for my Charbroil Fetish and once again visited this establishment. Upon return I ordered the steak filet 'MEDIUM' as the first time and received what could only be described as a dry,overcooked,under seasoned mound of meat that needed the sharp steak knife provided to cut through the leather like substance. i forgot to order the corn and the fries that accompany the steak are standard at best,especially for holland. We moved to Haarlem about a year ago and everyone used to mention the Burger Bar In Amsterdam and how good it was and when they mention they opened one Haarlem we couldn't wait to try it! I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. For food I would give it 4 stars but the service made me knock it down to 3 stars. Our original server was super nice and friendly when they took our order but that was the last we saw of the server. After our food was dropped no one ever came back to see if we wanted more drinks or anything else. We were pretty much ignored and then when we finally got a server to come to table for our bill, it seemed like we were bothering them. We frequently try places all over Haarlem and I can say this was probably the worst service we ever encountered. I hate saying this because the initial guy was really nice. My other "beef" is that for this price it would be nice to get a little salad or fries on the side. All you get is a burger on this big plate for that price. When we saw this we ended up ordering the truffle fries after the fact and they ask if you want mayo and we said of course and they charge you for it. OK The Thrill Grill in Haarlem what to say. The place like so many hip new places in the Netherlands look good on paper. However that is pretty much the only thing it looks good on. OK that maybe a bit harsh but this was certainly not the best Hamburger place I have been at. The Spicy Burger was not spicy, having complained about it we were given the classic burger by the friendly staff. My Buddy asked for a burger without bacon, weird I know. Burgers arrive with bacon on both burgers. Uh I thought we asked yours to be without? But to be fair it is quite a ridiculous thing to ask, a burger without bacon come buddy. Annoyed I told the waitress, she quickly acted and very quickly he got another burger. Now these burgers are not huge and although many people put emphasis on size I found it to big enough, leaving enough space for a side dish. Give me quality over quantity anytime. I know there are many that do not agree but that is also the reason why they are overweight and generally do not make it past 70. Although in the case of The Thrill Grill this was neither, or at least not much of both. The bun was a little stale and the pickle was actually more spicy than the spicy burger we had before. My buddy also had the hotdog which actually smelled better than the burger, oh yeah the burger it tasted alright but not as good as the hype surrounding this place. Dessert was vanilla ice cream doused in espresso which was actually pretty good, but could have used a bit more ice-cream. All in all it has been a pretty disappointed culinary week for me for The Roast Room and now this. Maybe I just shouldn't visit new places expecting them to have their affairs in order. read more
