    Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend 2017

One Of The Friendliest Family-Operated Wineries You'll Find Anywhere! SITREP I have been spending some Holiday Weekends down in the Clarksburg area, and so have managed to carve out a few afternoon treks over to The Old Sugar Mill ("The Mill"), where Three Wine Company ("Three Wine") is located. THE SETUP The Mill is probably one of the most dynamic uses of old space I've seen in a long time: the approximate century old mill factory buildings & grounds all over the compound have been refurbished beautifully so that they now house & support about a dozen(?) or so winery tenants, and all the support staff for The Mill's compound. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/three-wine-company-clarksburg?select=XtGgfNZRSn1Nh8SgidLZMA&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w This is where you will find Three Wine, in the main building right after entering the main entrance. It's an absolutely beautiful set-up, and I had such a kick chatting it up with the Grandmother-Grandson team who were being wine co-stewards this day! [Guys should be SO LUCKY to have an active nana that they can hang out and be in business with!] https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/three-wine-company-clarksburg?select=b2lR88UCLc6Lf89AcOp-2w&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w THE WINES Three Wine's wines (say that 10 times real fast!) are delicious varietals, at very accessible price points. Whether Reds or Whites, I believe anyone will find at least one wine they like. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/three-wine-company-clarksburg?select=Pbk-_errQoa_cijSEWuHIQ&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w *REDS - I'm not a huge fan of reds, but I still appreciate a good varietal - I found that in BOTH their 2014 Zinfandel Old Vine and their 2014 Field Blend Old Vine - both were full-bodied (the Zin more so, the Field Blend more "refreshing") - both only $22 per bottle. *WHITES & DESSERTS - this is what I like most, the sweeter the wine, the better [if I'm going for a more "full-bodied" taste-experience, I prefer to just transition out to Bourbon whiskeys and Stout brews, and get out of wines altogether by this point.] HUGE props to Three Miles': = Mendocino County Sparking Wine, = 2016 Escapade; and especially their, = S3X Riesling! Oh my GAWD! WINE CLUB! Whether here at Old Sugar Mill - or wineries elsewhere - I have a problem when Wine Clubs become an excuse for "social stratification of classes". I saw that in places here like Elevation Ten, Heringer Estates, and Todd Taylor - totally turned off by their interpretation of "Wine Club". LESSON: "Wine-Club-Snobbery" turns off MANY potential customers & it's a two-edged sword: (1) As mechanism for discounted bulk purchases & shipping, it's great; (2) But as an excuse to deny customers "access" - via their space-bifurcation of the taste room(s) between regular customers and their club-members - NO BUENO. What I LOVE about Three Mile's interpretation is that right off the bat, they take the pretentiousness out by calling it their "Dirt Club!" https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/three-wine-company-clarksburg?select=sd_lFfPr0T8SnyEZj4Yb6g&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w And the 20% discount is amazing gimme to their members of their Dirt Club. AND, they don't bifurcate their wine patrons into artificial classes in different areas for purposes of wine-tasting. THE LOWDOWN A great, fun wine-tasting experience!

If you are casually hitting all the tasting rooms at the Sugar Mill, a must visit is Three Wine Company. I love Matt Cline's Zinfandel and it's a great start at the Front Bar. But our Party of Six had a reservation for the Food and Wine Pairing. Margaret Cline created an incredible Table Seating set up and led us to the back cavernous room where we enjoyed the mellow vibe. A Great Five Star Experience.

Guess how many wines are included in the complimentary tasting?!? They have over 10 if you pay $5. While you contemplate this mind jogger I want to tell you about three wines that I liked. I am not much for Reisling, but my goodness they make one that grabs your attention. Art is art, and that is a good bottle. They also have a 105 year old vine Zin that is very nicely balanced between spice and nice. They also have an 85 year old vine Zin that is good, but not quite as good as the 105. They lady pouring was very cool. This is a great stop in the Old Sugar Mill.

Three Wine Co just opened up a tasting room at Old Sugar Mill. They have a little under 10 wines to taste and no tasting fee. I only tried the whites (I think there were 3-4 reds as well) and they were wonderful. But the real highlight was the S3x late harvest Riesling. It is AMAZING. It was probably the best dessert wine I've ever had. Of course it's incredibly sweet (too much for my tasting partner) but it totally hit the spot for this sweet tooth. If you like dessert wines, this alone is worth visiting the Old Sugar Mill.

Shoutout to the West Sacramento/ Clarksburg area…read more... The Old Sugar Mill in Clarksburg is a historic beet sugar refinery from 1934-1993 that has wine shops and tasting rooms for local wineries. They have over a dozen wineries. Wine tastings average $15 and most wineries waive the fee if you buy a bottle. They have wine shops in the main building and in the other building. Don't forget to walk back and to the right to the shops in the separate back building, there is 3-4 more wineries. Each winery are literal walled shops with their own seating areas. Temperature controlled which is nice on hot summer days. Each have their own wine tasting, food offerings, and special events. Old Sugar Mill is less than 15 minute drive from downtown Sacramento. The buildings are beautiful. They kept the historic brick walls and exterior. It has a modern shabby chic look. Three different brands owned the refinery. It all began in 1934 with Amalgamated, American Crystal Sugar Factory (1936-1982), and Delta Sugar (1983-1993). The sugar was refined by local Northern Californian grown beets. The buildings was renovated in 2000 for its current use. Awesome concept and beautiful architecture design. They also host weddings and events. They have a banquet room with slideshow equipment. There is also an outdoor lawn and adjoining paved patio area that is shaded in the afternoon by the buildings that would make for a gorgeous wedding venue. On hot summer days, the Delta breeze kicks in for instant cool down. No outside food are picnics are allowed. On the weekends, they have food trucks. Plus the majority of the wineries sell food (appetizers) as well. Also no pets are allowed (excluding service animals). The restrooms are located right by the front entrance.

They have many events here, including private events and wedding. The upcoming event is Port and Chocolate for Valentine's Day. That sounds so delicious. I loved chocolate and my husband is always up to trying another port. Parking- They have a private lot and we were able to easily find a parking spot right in-front of the entrance. Bathrooms- They have many stalls in the bathroom located to the left of the entrance. Temperature- It's cool inside, a little too cool for us today. It was 63 degrees out today and warm in the sun. I bet in the sweltering heat of our summers this is the perfect place to be. The Sugar Mill is an indoor venue. They have three different building with different wineries at this time. So, there is a little walking outside. Wine Barrels- You can buy half wine barrels for your garden for sale. Seating- They have lots of little seating areas. Inside they have a whole room with seating and nice decor. The tables are draped in white table cloths and there are stacks of wine barrels as the back drop. They have a palm court in the back and it's so quaint and beautiful. Perfect for sipping some wine slowly and chit chatting with friends. If you are looking to sit in the sun there is are a set of tables and chairs out back near the food truck. Ambiance- I love the location and building. It's an old Sugar Mill that produced sugar from sugar beets. That industry has now ended and it's now a place to visit many wineries. It's the only place that I know of that have numerous wineries and offer wine tasing for a minimum fee.

We got married at Scribner Bend in May 2025 and it was a dream from start to finish!…read more Scribner Bend was the only venue we visited during our wedding planning process because we felt so pleased with the beauty, charm, pricing, and process they offered. We were especially pleased by how much was included in the venue package that we didn't have to coordinate separately, like lighting, tables, and chairs. Shaye was an absolute delight to work with and we always felt cared for. As a queer couple, it was so nice to feel welcomed and accepted by Scribner Bend and all of their preferred vendors we spoke with. May was the perfect time to be there, the white roses on the arches were in bloom which complemented the rest of our florals beautifully. Our whole day flowed so smoothly thanks to Deija, our day-of planner provided by Scribner Bend, and all of the rest of the staff. All of our guests were so complimentary of the wine, the setting, and the flow of the evening. We really could not have wished for a better venue experience. We also want to note, Paesanos was an exceptional caterer! I know some might be concerned with not having a choice of caterer but we found it to be a relief (one less vendor to coordinate) and Paesanos did a fantastic job. Rain was amazing at communication, and Diana was wonderful to work with on the day. They even packed up a couple of containers of leftovers for us to go home with. Thank you, Scribner Bend, for being an excellent venue!

And it is a source of great pride to find our local, Greater Sacramento-Delta Bogle wines when we travel outside of California or USA. In fact, we were thrilled to enjoy a bottle in Shanghai, China! But we had never been to the Bogle Family Ranch and Vineyards outside of Clarksburg, CA. We finally reserved a couple of hours to visit the winery - and can't say enough good things! We enjoyed several, terrific wines not available in our local stores - such as their delicious Sparkling Rose! But more importantly, experienced a lovely afternoon on the BEAUTIFUL Bogle Family Ranch grounds! Everything around us was green and gorgeous; with cool breezes due to the surrounding water of the Sacramento River. The picnic tables were warm and inviting. The snacks were great (we brought a picnic lunch). And EVERY employee with which we spoke was excited to educate and inspire us - taking great pride in Bogle Family's six generations of Delta farming; sincere commitment to sustainability and the community; and vision of how the family plans to continue the winery's growth and international expansion, while maintaining its commitment to winemaking excellence. Every staff member that we met had been Bogle employees for over 10 years at least (a couple over 30!). I think it really says a lot about a company and family when their employees promote and compliment - even when the bosses are not in the room! While we had originally planned just a one-time visit to the Bogle vineyards, we left as Bogle Family Wine Club Members. And look forward to attending many Bogle events (including live music and movie nights), in the upcoming year. Well done and thanks for a great day, Bogle Family!

The wine and property are lovely -- unfortunately the welcome at the door felt like an audition for "Most Judgmental Winery Greeter." When we walked in, the woman at the front greeted us with a slow head-to-toe scan before even saying hello. For context, we weren't exactly stumbling in from a river float -- Patagonia, designer black jeans, nice casual wine-country attire. My partner was dressed similarly. Completely normal for a winery visit. Since it was my first time there, I asked where we should go. She informed us -- while continuing the visual inspection -- that upstairs was reserved for more formally dressed guests with reservations. The upstairs area, by the way, was completely empty. She then told us we could "go help ourselves around the corner." The tone was less "welcome to wine country" and more "you appear to be beneath the staircase." Honestly, I've been to plenty of wineries, from casual tasting rooms to higher-end spots, and I've never been greeted with that level of instant judgment. It was oddly hostile for a place that literally sells a beverage meant for relaxing. The ironic part is that after getting past that moment, the rest of the experience was actually nice. The wine was good, the grounds are pretty, and the other staff we interacted with were perfectly pleasant. But that initial interaction? Brutal. If first impressions matter (and they do in hospitality), someone might want to let the front door know that sizing people up like a nightclub bouncer at 1am isn't exactly the warm, welcoming winery vibe most people are hoping for. Great wine. Beautiful place. One spectacularly toxic greeting.
