During my labor she was there the entire time and was good at changing positions to help keep labor progressing and my husband involved in supporting me. She was very mindful of our birth plan, for example she advocated to be sure our nurse learned how to change the bed to a squatting position with the bar in early labor. Baby came quickly, had she not done this our nurse would not have known how. She stayed and helped us move to the postpartum room ensuring breastfeeding was well established before she left. She also came to our home a few days after the birth to help out and made me a postpartum ginger soup and a egg drop one and assisted with helping me learn how to baby-wear a newborn. I was planning to have a hospital birth but also wanted to go without unnecessary medication, and wasn't so sure my husband and I could do it without extra support. I'm soooooo glad I searched for a doula and found Cindy! She was very intuitively sensitive of and attentive to our needs as a whole family (and not just me) and even paid attention to the needs of my older child. She didn't push any agenda on us or make us feel judged. She made every effort to listen to what we wanted with our birth and after care plan and gave us the space to figure it out when we weren't sure. She also seemed to just know what we needed without us really knowing it or being able to articulate it ourselves. The best part was how supportive she was in so many practical ways after the birth without being overbearing and invasive (like some family members can be). Even though I have pretty supportive family around, having the attentive support of another impartial, caring woman I could trust during a very vulnerable time made my second birth experience so much smoother, easier, and full of joyful memories. She met with us before the birth to get to know us, and was not only there with us before, during and after labor, but she also checked in on us a couple times in the weeks after to provide whatever support we needed at the time. This is my first pregnancy…read moreand because of my rare chronic illnesses, I tend to have medical anxiety due to past experiences with healthcare providers not listening to my concerns/needs and facing the repercussions of that. My ideal birth would be an at-home water birth but due to limited physical space and being higher risk, I am planning to have a hospital birth. Even before my pregnancy, I knew that I wanted to do some kind of hypnobirthing practice. There are lots of resources (online articles, books, videos, etc.) these days that go over the medical aspects of labor and birthing as well as physical preparation, but being someone that is anxiety-prone, especially with unfamiliar medical providers/spaces, I knew that my main goal was to get mentally prepared. A class was ideal because I wanted to get actual practice/feedback (rather than just reading about what to do from a book) and also wanted to learn alongside my husband. He will be my sole birth companion and advocate, and I felt that it was important for us to be on the same page in regards to how we would approach stressors and challenges. Admittedly, my husband was a bit skeptical about "hypnobirthing" before our first class. He thought it would have to do with me being under hypnosis in the sense that I would be "controlled" by someone else. He also didn't want me to get scammed lol, since there are sometimes cases of "new age"/"alternative" practices that end up being scams. However, after attending classes and practicing the exercises, we can both confidently say that we are glad to have taken Vivien's class! After we registered, we received a package in the mail with the class materials. There were some aspects of the book (not written by Vivien) that came across to me as a little fear-mongery and against hospital births but Vivien does a wonderful job in her classes at emphasizing the benefits/uses of hypnobirthing for all types of birth experiences, whether you are planning for a home vs. hospital birth, vaginal vs. C-section birth, spontaneous vs. induced birth, etc. And of course, we can always prepare with visions/plans but things can happen; what's most important is that we feel confident and safe regardless of how the labor/birth actually plays out. The concepts can also be used outside of labor/birth. For example, I was recently struggling with side effects from getting my COVID booster recently. I felt miserable and was having difficulty falling asleep. My husband did some of the exercises that we practiced in class (reminders to do calm breathing, doing light tough massage, reading a relaxation script) and it was really helpful. Vivien's classes are a great mix of presentation slides, watching videos, discussions, and hypnobirthing/breathing exercises. The videos in particular were powerful for me. I realized that up until Vivien's classes I had only heard of labor/birthing horror stories from family/friends (and TV shows/movies!), including that of my own birth when my mom was pregnant with me. Vivien's classes were the first time I had seen/heard examples of such calm, peaceful births and I was grateful to see examples of hospital births too. Of course, you could still tell when the person was experiencing discomfort from a surge, but it was a complete 180 from my previous perceptions/mental images of birth where the person is screaming, red/purple in the face, crying, exhausted, and/or barely coherent. The classes also have specific materials/practices for birthing companions too, so your partner/support person can feel involved and be prepared to be your advocate when the time comes. In regards to logistical things, the location is downtown. Parking is in a private lot but Vivien provides validation. Clear directions and parking instructions are texted ahead of time. There is a clean, private bathroom located in the office so no need to worry about bathroom breaks :) I would definitely recommend Vivien's hypnobirthing classes to expecting parents!

I did Hypnobirthing with my first, nearly 9 years ago with no pain medication, but felt I could use a refresher. Vivien gave me one-on-one support outside of class, and during group sessions, asked me about my experiences and let me share knowledge with the group as well. We covered everything a birthing parent and their birthing partner need to know to feel ready, and if this were my first time, I would feel equally prepared. My confidence took a hit knowing I couldn't provide for my little one right away. I knew something had to be done and a referral from my husband's cousin led me to Yuko!!!! Yuko helped my husband's cousin clear up her mastitis and since I came in one week postpartum, turns out I did have plenty milk. Yuko listened patiently and closely to my concerns, then used her magic to carefully massage out the areas needed to get the milk flowing while answering all my questions. I was crazy leaking the next two days since Yuko massaged out all the old milk. The whole time I felt nutured in this safe space. I came out of my inititial two hour appointment so much more knowledgeable about my breastfeeding journey and the next steps for my family. Yuko also helped me see what I needed to feel like for baby to latch properly and comfortably. This latching part and deciding what's in future for baby is still in progress, and I'm so happy to have Yuko on team baby. My OB didn't see the point in doing pelvic floor PT before birth so I got a referral from my PCP and had my first appointment 16 weeks (I'm currently 23 weeks). The office is located on the second floor of the Kukui Plaza. When you drive into the parking structure, make sure that you use the lane for guests to get your ticket. Guest parking is on the lower level and you can park in any stall that isn't marked as "reserved". There isn't cell reception down there and I initially thought I couldn't park in stalls with numbers but couldn't call the office to confirm--just something to keep in mind. I drive a compact car and the stalls are pretty tight but I'm always able to find an open space within a reasonable distance from the elevator. When you exit the elevator on the second floor, Hawai'i Pelvic Therapy will towards on your right. The receptionists are always really friendly and welcoming at both check in and check out. All areas of the space are very clean and bright. The bathroom is a bit small and there is a step up so I would recommend turning on the light (to the right if you're entering the bathroom) first before stepping in. I was tickled to see a Squatty Potty as one of the tools in the exercise space as I've been using one at home long before I became pregnant lol. At each appointment, I usually meet with both Deborah (HPT founder and PT) and a PT assistant. Deborah will do manual therapy/massage in one of the private consultation rooms and sometimes check in to see how I'm progressing/make any recommendations for the PT assistant for my treatment. The PT assistant will work with me on exercises in the main space. I initially thought pelvic floor PT would be internal (ex: kegels) but all therapies have been external/clothes on so far. Deborah said that because I'm pregnant, we want to try to avoid any internal therapies. I initially had some pain around my tailbone that was so bad that it hurt to adjust myself in bed or get up from being seated. That has since gone away. I've also been having pain in my piriformis muscle (deep in my glutes) and the massages are HEAVENLY. Because they're so specific at the pain I've been experiencing, they've been more relieving than general prenatal massage. I (internally) got emotional at first because I had been struggling with so much pain for over a month at that point and nothing was helping and I FINALLY felt some relief. Deborah also let me know that I have about three fingers width of ab separation (abdominis recti) so the exercises are also working to address that. If you don't have them already, they will recommend that you get yourself some PT equipment so that you can continue to practice exercises at home. So far, this has included a yoga mat, a foam roller, yoga blocks, and resistance bands. For some equipment (ex: medicine ball to squeeze with my thighs), they can recommend other solutions like a pillow between the thighs instead. These items are easily found on Amazon or local stores like Target, Walmart, and even Longs. The PT assistant has been great at checking in with my comfort levels as I am practicing new exercises and making adjustments to my treatment plan as needed. Afterwards, they will send you some emails with the exercises that include written descriptions and short video clips. The video clips are great because they help me better understand/remember what to do compared to just written information and still photos. With my insurance, they charge a small copay with each appointment and offered to keep my card on file. If you need an itemized receipt (ex: for FSA card), they can provide one "super bill" for free. They do not validate parking but neither do any of my healthcare providers at Kapi'olani/Queens. They tend to get booked up quickly so they'll usually try to schedule at least four appointments for you ahead of time. If you're interested, they can put you on a waiting list and reach out to you if there ends up being an opening for a specific day that's currently booked. They send appointment reminders through text, which is helpful, and you can communicate with them through call, text, or email, though I believe there is a specific number to text that is different from the number on their website.

Her doctor was one of her first visitors at the hospital the day she was born. All documents and reminded are sent via email or text message and they have apps for your phone to do check ins and updates with doctor. I love the care and attention to detail they provide here. My baby's doctor is Mary Nino and she is such a sweetheart! I recommend her to anyone that needs a pediatric doctor who is willing to go above an beyond to meet your baby's needs. The office facility is located in town with plenty of parking. Once you get to the door, they require you to wear a mask and take everyone's temperature that's coming in. The office itself is decorated and beautiful and colorful animal paintings on every wall. The examination rooms are also decorated in art and the whole atmosphere feels so welcoming and child friendly. The ladies working the front desk are also very helpful, courteous and friendly.
