Let me start with the conclusion drawn by everything to follow: Kathe is the best as far as midwifery care goes. She is full of wisdom, expertise, and compassion to care for you, your ohana, and your baby during pregnancy, labor, and post-partum. She is amazing, a real gem and gift to midwifery. I am convinced Kathe is fulfilling her calling and I am so thankful for having found her prior to giving birth to my children. Me and my husband first met with Kathe when I was about 13 weeks pregnant with my first baby. At the time we were with Kaiser Permanente and doing our prenatal visits with them. Her level of care, genuine sincerity, comfort, & expertise is top notch. She listens to your concerns, she asks questions to see if there is any supplements you would benefit from as well as any concerns she may have, and offers her advice which is actually helpful. After our first consult (we hadn't even paid or decided to use her yet) she directed me to start on her recommended iron supplement and within two days I was no longer exhausted and falling asleep at 7:30pm. I was amazed! She instructed me to get a number of other supplements as well which also have proven to be very beneficial. From there she could identify the baby's position immediately, taught me how to find my uterus walls and the baby's position, and finds the heartbeat instantly every time (still true, 3 more pregnancies later). Whereas at Kaiser they took my vitals, peed in a cup, continually asked me to get the flu shot even after I told them no, please stop asking me, and it would take at least 10 minutes for them to find a heartbeat. It felt like such a waste of time, impersonal, and unsatisfying, like there was something lacking. And there was! Any hesitancy or fear I had about doing a home birth was washed away as we continued to meet with Kathe and experienced how sound and complete her care was. And she was and has continued to always be available by phone or text for any questions that arise in between visits. We had peace that we were in sure hands. With our subsequent pregnancies, she has included each additional child in the prenatal meetings and it has been such a wonderful experience for all of us. In doing so, she not only prepares you, but your children too just by including them in the process of the visits and bringing to life via their senses the majesty that is having a new baby in utero and out. From the start she became part of our ohana and 6 years later she has been with us for all 4 of our children...each of whom adore her. We've had long-ish labors (15 hours) down to 3 hours, we've had hard labors and easy labors, we've had labors go past their due date, we've had our last labor which had a brief complication that Kathe maneuvered expertly and calmly without putting me in a frantic state, we've had a post birth transfer due to circumstances beyond Kathe's control, we've had lactation and breast feeding questions answered. In every situation she has been reliable, consistent, calming, prepared, full of wisdom and knowledge, and a guide through the journey, leading with love for you, your ohana, and baby. And she does this all the while making sure she takes care of as much as she can so you and yours have the best opportunity to enjoy the bliss of welcoming your new baby into the world. Every birth story is different and some don't go the way you planned, but Kathe is who you want in both situations. She will do everything she can to give you the birth you guys plan on, but she also will be very honest about whether a change of plans or even a transfer is needed and goes above and beyond in those situations to accommodate, help, and serve you in the event of needing to transfer care. Currently we are not in need of her professional service, but we still occasionally go to visit with her. She is so welcoming when we do and the visits are full of us, our kids, and "Aunty Kathe" reading books and playing with some of the timeless toys and trinkets she has been keeping for many years. There is no one else I would trust more for pregnancy, birth and post-partum, plus I genuinely just enjoy her presence and look forward to meeting with her, which makes her the best of the best. Trying to find let alone get ahold of a midwife on Hawaii can be a challenge, as I found when pregnant with my 4th baby due June 2023. I wanted to do a home birth but struggled to find information that would help me on this journey. I had reached out to several people and only heard back from a couple. I had resigned myself to meeting with an OBGYN but going into the clinic it felt cold and I disagreed with several policies they had(since I had 3 previous natural deliveries with out complications). Kathe was one of the few who had responded back so I set up a meeting with her in November or December of 2022.I explained to Kathe that we were in a very strange season of transition, and we weren't even sure if we would be on island for the birth. She listened and then helped to bring so much peace by speaking wisdom, and walked us through to help us decide what we ultimately wanted. She was so flexible and easy going, while also being encouraging and supportive to how we wanted our birth to go. I knew immediately I didn't want to work with anyone else. Her experience in the medical field speaks volumes, but her character, and kind heart is what won me over. Kathe walked with us every step of the way through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. She was always communicative and supportive of what we wanted for our family. Helped us every step of the way. When I gave birth I felt prepared. She listened to what I said in labor and allowed me to go through the process as I needed and wanted, while being a guide and present person incase we needed assistance. My 9lb 14oz guy was born healthy and peacefully in my home. She took care of us and made sure I never felt alone. After the events of labor, she tucked us in and cleaned up and allowed me to focus on the new life I had birthed. I was planning to bottle feed, after 3 prior failed attempts at breast feeding. And she asked very good questions that never made me feel forced to change my mind, but gave me the opportunity to try again, with her help, if it was something i wanted. I agreed(I really didn't think it would work but I really wanted the experience of breastfeeding.) when baby was born her words were kind and patient, never judging, but encouraging. And am pleased to say, 7 months later I'm still breastfeeding successfully. Through postpartum she made house visits, and checked in regularly to encourage me, and make sure baby and I were in good health. We feel so incredibly blessed to have met Kathe. I couldn't imagine a more perfect pregnancy and birth experience.She was a breath of fresh air. I would recommend her to anyone looking to do a home birth. read more

I have two lovely healthy boys, both born at home. My second was delivered with the outstanding care and assistance of Kathe Gibbs. My first son was delivered in another state with the care of another midwife. My mother delivered all but one of her six children at home in the care of a midwife. The care, provided by these midwives over the years, was wonderful and blessed. However, the care, assistance, love, attention to personal detail, experience and knowledge provided by Kathe Gibbs, far outweighs that of my past experiences with midwives. I can not begin to properly articulate her gentleness, her sincerity, her knowledge and truest desire to assist you, and your entire family, in having your custom and personally desired birth experience. My husband is a physician, he was delighted with Kathe's knowledge, experience and level of care. We both hope to engage her services again soon. Please reach out to me if you are considering Kathe as your midwife. As I can tell you my story. And how horrific she made it. I strongly urge you to not consider Kathe. There are many midwives on Oahu who are wonderful. However Kathe is not one of them. I have a lot of information I can provide to you and witnesses. I wish that no woman will ever have to go thru what I had to while in labor with my son. I have debated a long time about leaving this review but ultimately if I can protect another woman out there then the world will be a safer place. Kathe was extremely unprofessional. She yelled at me telling my mother and I that we had wasted 2 days of her life when I was in labor. She yelled at me saying "Get this baby out now and do not come back into your house until your baby is coming!!" When I told Kathe I was no longer comfortable with her she told me to shut up. When I asked her to leave my house she said she would not leave and that I signed a contract. I told her I am willingly taking myself to the hospital. She followed us to the hospital. Which I was thankful for until we got there and she was horrifically rude and disrespectful to the hospital staff. Please reach out to me for more details. Kathe also told me no one ever pays her in full. I decided it was fine to pay her in full a month before my baby came. Do not do this. You will not be reimbursed for post natal care if you decide you no longer want it. After I had my horrible experience with Kathe. I later was told that in the midwife community on Oahu, no one wants to work with Kathe. That is why she never has an assistant and doulas do not recommend working with her. Kathe told me I was not having a normal birth and that I needed to go to the hospital. She told me the hospital would pump all kinds of chemicals into my body to make the baby come. Even though I really wanted a home birth, In the end I am so glad I did not have my baby with Kathe. Her energy was horrifying and scary. When I got to the hospital I was told everything was fine. Baby and I were fine. I was in early stages of labor and everything was going fine. The hospital told me to go home and rest and to come back when my contractions were stronger. Went back to the hospital and had my healthy baby. Very easy and fast birth. read more

Kathe truly goes above and beyond the calling of what it is to be a midwife - she is a friend, mother, caretaker, and true healer for all of her clients. Kathe was my midwife for my daughter's birth in March of 2020. We had to move away from Hawaii soon after. We had just moved to Oahu when I found out I was pregnant. I was terrified and a little hopeful. I interviewed with several midwives and Kathe was the only one that make me feel 100% comfortable. Like she truly understood. We had several miscarriages before I was diagnosed with luteal phase defect. I was scared we would lose this pregnancy too. But Kathe was amazing and she helped me through a difficult pregnancy. I was able to have a homebirth. It wasn't easy, 10 lb baby 22 inches long in 12 hours from start to finish. We just had our second home birth about 4 weeks ago, and my husband is already talking about having another baby of course. I told him that the only way I'm giving birth again is if Kathe will be our midwife. I will literally fly her to wherever we are living. Kathe is so much more than just a midwife. We interviewed 2 other midwives on the island, and I couldn't be more grateful to have chosen Kathe...although it was meant to be from the start. She had me breath the baby out vice a forceful bearing down which could lead to tearing/irritated hemorrhoids. As soon as I met Kathe during the interview (where she comes to your house- how convenient is that?) I knew I wanted her to be my midwife. She's like a fairy godmother/shaman/superwoman. I don't know how she does it, she gives so much and is full of energy and positivity. I wouldn't have been able to make it through postpartum without her support and love and I am forever grateful. Babies are meant to be born at home into loving, familiar hands and women are meant to be protected, respected and honored. If you are considering a homebirth in the South Bay/Santa Cruz area.... Kathe is by far the most experienced, responsible, spiritual, amazing woman to be your midwife. She personifies what it means to be a midwife. She midwifed me through the portal to motherhood, through the challenges I had postpartum and continues to be a light in my life even now as my daughter is a toddler. Her prenatal care is like nothing you'd get in a doctor's office. She comes to your house and you chill in the living room drinking tea and talking, some visits were up to two hours long! She palpates your belly- a lost art as the majority of OB's will just give you an ultrasound each visit. She listens to you and addresses all the parts of you- your body, mind and soul. She respects you and empowers you to put your health in your own hands. She gives you a private childbirth education/birth planning meeting where you get to see a ton of awesome birth videos from births she has attended. and....she is an endless source of information. No pregnant woman can get enough information and she has a miraculous remedy for everything. She has an herbal iron concoction that cured my anemia. She had these magic tablets that cured my heartburn. She's magic! Postpartum... she is an angel. She came to my home with flowers and helped my husband give my daughter a sweet first baby bath in the birth tub. She was on call 24 hours a day for any questions or concerns ( and I had a lot). I don't know how we would have gotten by without her! The amount of care you receive from this phenomenal woman is above and beyond what is required in the contract. She is priceless. Kathe Gibbs is a true Gem! I cannot begin to explain how helpful and essentail she was for my delivery. For example, I spent the 1st 7 months of my pregnancy with an OBGYN and was not happy, as he was not addressing my concerns, I was extremely tired everyday and all he would say is, "that is normal". After I got fed up with him I started looking for a midwife and found Kathe through Blossom Birth. The first time she saw me she took a look at my blood test and told me the reason I was so tired was due to my Iron levels being so low. The doctor never bothered to even look over my blood work closely to note this because it was in the low section of an acceptable iron level for the average Joe. Kathe then proceeded to offer me a homemade Dock Root extract which immediately re-energized me! This is just the tip of the iceberg, I could go on and on about how wonderful , knowledgeable and caring she is. I've had both of my daughters with her and had one at home! After my sister had her baby at home with Kathe, I knew who to call when I was pregnant with my first! She helped me deliver my baby girl at home in April 2011. When I was pregnant with my 2nd it was a no-brainer to get on Kathe's calendar immediately! She helped me deliver my baby boy at home in March 2014. Kathe spends as much time as the mama needs at each appointment... we never felt rushed and she always provided so much knowledge and wisdom at each meeting. She always came with recommended readings and leaves the book with you until you are done. I looked forward to new books every time we met! Kathe's gentle birth techniques are what helped me have quick and wonderful birth experiences with both kids. Kathe is good at responding to texts, phone calls and emails. The biggest challenge during both births is the billing process. I've had a really hard time getting my $ from blue cross with lots of challenges with correct and updated codes. While I don't entirely blame Kathe as we all know Blue Cross will make it as hard as possible, I would recommend that she has some sort of process to keep up on codes or possibly even a billing assistant. While this was a pain, what is MOST important is the trust we had with Kathe and the guidance she provided. She has a special place in our family ;-) read more

Kathe is kind, caring, passionate about her work, and the joy and delight she finds in helping families through their childbearing years is obvious, infectious even! For me, where Kathe really shined was during my labor and the birth of my son. As a first time mother, I was incredibly grateful to have her guidance as I labored - it always seemed like she knew exactly when I needed her help (and also when I didn't!), she knew exactly what to do and say to help me through, and she knew when and how to just let me do my thing! Thanks to Kathe, my husband and I both had such a wonderful, positive, empowering birth experience . . . our son is nearly two, and we still talk about how awesome it was!
