Despite visiting here a few times, I somehow have not posted a review after these visits. It's been quite the mainstay bar/pub in the Old Port for quite a long while now since 1980. It has old school vibes when you step inside with plenty of exposed brick walls and art/decor on many of the walls too. As well as quite a few TVs like you'd expect most bars/pubs to have. It certainly has a vibe overall where I can understand those who live nearby would make it their go-to choice for a beer or a bite to eat by themselves or with friends or to catch a game on the TVs. The visits me and my wife have had including bringing out of state family to visit have been good service wise with minimal complaints but at times waits for food have been longer than expected even when restaurant was not busy. Could use some improvement but minimal. Food wise I have had a burger from them, their mac n cheese, as well as some other sandwiches. I would kind of classify the food in a similar way as the service. It is good but doesn't leave me wowed or thinking I need to return for the meal. It's solid for bar/pub food. If you set your expectations in that manner, I think you will leave quite pleased. I live in Denver so this entire meal was an unusual treat. Maybe I am not the best judge for this type of fare, but I do know when something tastes amazing. The bun was toasted to perfection and the lobster was fresh. I absolutely love beer cheese and pretzels and - again - have a hard time finding them in Denver. These were PERFECT. Just not what it was. We loved Deweys, even the old location so many years ago. But our last meal there was the worst we've had in Maine. Bland nachos made from Hannaford chips with junk cheese and jalapeños, nothing else. Smelly small portions of fish, warm beer, expensive drinks. Wings were the only things palatable. Only the decent waiter was worthy of stars. Not worth the high prices. read more

I'll start this review by stating that I've visited to Three Dollar Dewey's many times over the last 20 years. I feel like they used to be a much better establishment in respects to food they serve to customers. I'll say this that the bar and drinks and service are all fine so I do recommend going there for drinks or making it a drink spot on your weekend out. Location is great on commercial street for a quick stop in. It's a casual place and seemed like all types were visiting and welcome. The food however was terrible. I got a turkey BLT and the turkey was a weird consistency and the bacon was so hard in some places I felt like it could have cracked my teeth. Very poor quality food. The chicken tenders my wife got were full of fatty bits we barely could even eat any of them. I don't need the food to be five stars I just need it to be eatable but it wasn't even close. For additional feedback for the restaurant I would like to say that its pretty dirty inside and they whole floor could use a sweep. Tables were not bussed promptly and it just felt kinda dirty. I do understand its mostly a bar but everyone likes a clean establishment when you are eating. The food quality needs improvement for sure. Also I thought it was way to dark in the restaurant even though it was very sunny outside. I like Three Dollar Dewey's as its been a staple of commercial street for a long time so I'm hoping this feedback helps make it better. We headed here after an air show because a member of our party has a gluten allergy. They clearly mark items GF or Vegan. The server asked if it was an allergy and was careful to make sure it was safe. Server was courteous and checked on us often. We had burgers, chicken tenders and the turkey BLT. All were fantastic. Came here for the first time for a pint with some colleagues, and overall had an enjoyable experience. The pros: - $3 pint of Shipyard Brewing Discovery IPA at all hours - Free popcorn with your purchase (though we did have to ask for it) - A dedicated vegan menu, which is awesome, given how rare it is to find vegan options at a pub - Lots of seating inside The cons: - Though the ambiance is quite divey, the food prices are not - Our server checked in on us often, but in a way that consistently made us feel like we weren't ordering enough food or drink, which injected some unnecessary stress to the whole experience We ordered several beers, the fries, and the 12-piece wings. The food was decent and the beers were a steal. Note that the honey garlic habañero sauce is really, really spicy (and I can handle my spice!). Really nice option for a drink and some food in Old Port. And a really nice vegetarian/vegan menu, which is rare for a pub. Smallish bar, but ample seating all around. The seafood chowder was great, and did not have bacon, so the pescatarian of the group was able to get it. The clam chowder is made with bacon, and the carnivores enjoyed it! Fun story, this place when it first opened was the only place in Maine to have Guinness on tap, and people would come from as far as Bangor to take advantage of it! Stopped in while walking downtown looking for a place to watch the Red Sox game. This place was awesome! Fun classic sports/dive bar with typical pub food. Lot of great local beer varieties and the bartender was super nice and attentive! I was here on a Tuesday night and they had a packed house for trivia. read more

I think it had been 15+ years since I had stepped inside Three Dollar Deweys, but I had heard they now had an intentionally designated vegan menu and I was curious! So my partner and I stopped in early on a weekend day (there was already a queue forming before their 11:30am opening!). Visiting was like a blast from the past. It felt like "old Portland" (IYKYK), completely frozen in time with vintage beer signs and sports posters. Did you know this was the first-ever Portland Ale House? If you haven't been in a while, know that not much has changed atmospherically. Also, there's still all you can eat free popcorn. I will say this: you are NOT COMING to Three Dollar Deweys for a cocktail or a mixed drink. Sorry, but they're bad (both in taste and in creation - my last cocktail here was like drinking vinegar, it also separated in the glass). Stick to a pint or something canned - they're half the price of a cocktail or mixed drink, anyway. Even a glass of wine is a better option. So, why the generous review rating? Because those vegan nachos are INCREDIBLE and might just be the best in the city (... possibly the only in the city?). Rewind a bit: "Why dedicate such a large amount of our menu to vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free items? Because we believe good food should be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of dietary restrictions or preferences - even in pubs. Grab your folks (or hands) dive right in and indulge knowing we take great care in our food preparation practices, such as regular employee training and dedicated safe spaces." That's super comforting to read, so THANKS Dewey's for this little (love) note on your website. For excellent, filling, satisfying nachos.... the price adds up: it's currently $16 and is a plate of thick, tri-colored, crunchy, salty tortillas with a gooey layer of vegan cheese, very wet pico (comes on the side), and jalapenos. Adding guacamole (an ample 1/2 cup of it, maybe?) costs an additional $4. Adding Veggie Life Jackfruit Chili (which they absolutely smother the nachos with!) costs an additional $6. So, realistically - because the nachos wouldn't be nearly as good without both of those things - it's $26 for nachos. Split between two people with a pint a piece, you're looking at $50ish. Which seems like a lot, but for dramatically less food and smaller drinks you're going to spend the same on, say, french fries and cocktails elsewhere. Been going to Dewey's since the late 80's, but rarely go now that I'm older and live out on the boonies. Two things from my recent visit have me regretting that - live music and happy hour. Came here with a friend looking for an affordable place to have a drink after having an expensive fancy cocktail elsewhere. We got there just as happy hour was winding down, but I was able to get a G&T in a pint glass for $5. That's a third of what you would pay at most other restaurants in downtown Portland. Was chatting with a lovely couple "from away" who had just moved here, when live music grabbed our attention. The classic Don Campbell and a young rock and country singer/ guitarist Henry Lowery. Great duo playing an excellent assortment of songs made the time fly by. Looking at Dewey's website, they have live music Sundays from 11-2, and M, W, TH 6-9PM. Tuesday nights are trivia. Nothing going on Friday and Saturday nights because why compete with the rest of the Old Port. Next time I will go back and enjoy the full show, happy hour drinks, and friendly service. I ordered the buffalo tofu sandwich with French fries and was very glad I did. The tofu was perfect, not soggy and not dried out like other places I've been to. It'll probably be a go-to for me whenever I'm in town because it's been almost a month and I keep thinking about it haha.. Three Dollar Deweys is always a fun local spot to go to! They have no parking lot but are situated on Commercial Street parking with tons of spots, as well as many side streets and parking garages close by. Parking is usually hectic as downtown Portland is immensely popular. Dewey's has tons of seating inside - two bars to sit at, high tops, booths, and tables. They sometimes have live music, which I lucked out and got to experience when I went. The pricing is decent and slightly lower than average for the area. They have tons of food and drink options. Food is mostly pub food but a great assortment of options from burgers to salads to mac n cheese to sandwiches. They have a rotating cocktail menu plus full bars so basically most drinks you could think of. We just got a beer and vodka with pineapple juice. Both were very good. We got the fried chicken sandwich and pulled port mac n cheese. The sandwich was delicious - chicken spiced and cooked perfectly. So juicy and delicious. The mac n cheese was a great portion, cheesy, tasty, and makes you want to go in for another bite. Our service was pretty good. Great to start off and then not so great as it got very busy very quickly. We ended up waiting 25 minutes for our check which is why I removed a star. The live music really made the atmosphere fun and care free. The building and bathrooms are handicap accessible. This is a wonderful place for a first date, getting together with friends, or just a cool spot to grab a drink. I will continue to keep coming back! read more

Another Old Port classic! I went here a couple times during the week I was in Portland. I can't begin to imagine how many times I have been here over the last 25 years... it has a warm and welcoming feel, lots of wood, worn floors and long tables with benches and booths. I enjoyed Shipyard Pumpkinhead - of course it had a cinnamon sugar rim. Great service every time I was there! Especially since it was one of those things where people were coming and going, potentially creating havoc with a server. I never felt like we annoyed them or were a burden. Upon entering you are immediately greeted by a very friendly staff. There were no less than three of them, all with smiles that could warm the heart of a badger. After the greeting we were led to a high top which is okay but I think we would have preferred something a little closer to the ground. No problem. Our server Mike, also a part of the greeting brigade, was very helpful, attentive and checked in often. I had an iced tea, a bowl of the veggie jackfruit chili & a garden salad, all which turned out to be way too much food. I think I was in pain when we left and could have done well with just a cup. Medium spicy, protein and fiber packed, with quinoa and corn. Very good but the temp could have been a little warmer. Standard garden salad and vinaigrette, everything was good and fresh. Not sure how to describe the overall ambiance but maybe bordering on the divey side of things. Yeah. I think I'll go back and next time have the $3 beer. read more

I chose to come to this restaurant because it has a vegetarian/vegan section of the menu. When you enter it is pretty large dark ale house feel. They have free popcorn if you ask for it. Two large bars and high top and low top tables I ordered the barbecue Jackfruit portobello sandwich. It was amazing. It was really good. Honestly, it was the first thing I liked eating in Maine as a vegetarian. My husband really enjoyed lobster roll. Today was an extremely hot day and it was nice and cold inside with AC. Came here for late night food last night, I was surprised that they had live music inside. I love live music so I was very happy! They have a great late night menu and we got a hot dog and some cheesy bread. On the weekends I believe they serve food till 12am. They have a huge bar and lots of seating. It's a great spot to watch sports as well cause they have lots of TVs. The service is typically on point. The food is bar food and certain things I think are overpriced but all the things I have ever got are good! They also have large tables, so if you are with a big group it is a great spot. This place can get uncomfortably crowded and loud at its busiest times, but that's because folks here know where to go for good and reasonably priced food and drink. Even on a crowded Saturday afternoon, they were able to find seating for us at their busiest in places we didn't think were even possible. My own salad, Avocado Insalata, was almost too large to finish, with a whole sliced avocado on top and a large container of dressing on the side. I think they pride themselves on generous portions and being very accommodating. And if you're sitting in the front of the restaurant, you also get something you wouldn't get from most of the places in Old Port - a view of the water. read more
