This is a legendary bakery with amazing food. It's why we chose them to make a custom cake for our son's Eagle Scout court of honor. They came through on short notice after several other bakeries let us down. They also had one job. The day of our event, we drove 45 minutes from north of Houston to pick up the cake. The artwork was perfect and, as long as you don't know how to read, the wording was correct. That's right. Instead of "Congratulations," they wrote "Graduation." Big difference, and on a $100+ cake, it was shocking. I called the Braeswood location to let them know and to encourage them to PROOFREAD their cakes before sending them out. I was offered a $10 store credit and instructed to pick up from the Braeswood location directly in the future. Since we live in Tomball, adding another 20 minutes to our trip isn't an option. We won't use Three Brothers for any more once-in-a-lifetime events. There's zero excuse for not checking your work, especially when customers are paying top dollar for it. read more

Fact: The Jucker family (original 3 brothers) introduced bagels to Houston. I picked an everything bagel up the other day, and my mind was blown. It was so so good. I kept telling everyone that day about that bagel. I felt like I was back in New York. Three Brothers is my favorite business to support because the brothers and sister are Holocaust survivors who came to Houston for a safer, better life. But they've kept their recipes from Poland and still serve them today. I just feel so good when I buy from them because they deserve our business. I'm a sucker for bakeries, as I love carbs in sweet, baked form. However, not all bakeries are created equal, but this one is one that I will definitely be returning. Came here mainly for the gingerbread man, since I had heard many good things about it. My Jewish friend even told me that the gingerbread man is still made from the original mold that the bakery used back in the day when they first opened (According to the 3 brothers website, the bakery opened in 1949)! But of course, how can you go to a bakery and just get one gingerbread man? I decided to also try a jumbo cupcake as well. After 5 minutes of agony in front of the cupcake display, I settled on the carrot cupcake. They also had snickerdoodle cupcake, Frapuccino cupcake, red velvet, Italian crème, and double chocolate that caught my eye. Mustering all my self restraint, I drove myself home and took a picture of my gingy and the carrot cupcake before I pounced on them (normally, baked goods would be consumed immediately in the car, but good thing I live close). Gingy: YUM! The texture was softer than I had expected (for some reason I imagined a crunchy gingerbread man), but the flavor is spot on. The best part is it that it even leaves you with the spicy aftertaste of ginger, which is amazing. Very moist, and goes well with an unsweetened beverage such as milk/tea/coffee. Jumbo Carrot Cupcake: Thumbs up! Moist and fluffy. They are also not kidding when it's labeled "Jumbo". Although half the cupcake itself is the frosting. Frosting is very sweet, but that's expected. The cake itself is on the sweeter end, but very good. I also love that you can taste (and see) little shreds of carrots and that there's pecans. My husband also loved everything. My family and I also love that the danish bread unravels like a cinnamon roll. But after what I just experienced, I will never return. I called on Tuesday 12/12 to place an order for a buche de noel. Something my family always serves on Christmas Eve. The young lady on the phone rudely said "hey we're really busy. I can't talk right now." I said "ok, that's fine. I'll just come in on Saturday like I do every weekend and place my order in person." She said "ok great." I show up on Saturday (today) and am told they are not accepting any more custom orders. When I entered the bakery I was immediately greeted. They were super nice and friendly. I wanted a cake for the weekend and was told to come back the day of so the cake can be moist and fresh! All the cookies and pastries and cakes and brownies look oh so delectable from the display cases but from a taste perspective, MUCH is left to be desired. We were pretty disappointed. Prices are a bit steep at $1.99 for 1 cookie, $6-7 for a slice of cake and a whopping $4.50 for a brownie. All I wanted was a fresh slice of a light and fluffy cake topped with creamy icing and a cup of black coffee. So, I decided to try the neopolitan cake. Oh boy. Not only did the coffee taste liKe cardboard, but the cake was halfway frozen! This was late in the afternoon, so you would think it would have thawed out by then. I also sensed (by the layer of frost) that it was a few days old cake, you know the kind you would find with a "manager's special" sticker on a rolling cart at the back of the grocery store. Their cheesecake brownie is to die for. I live many items there. Including the challah. But the best part is my picky mother-in-law loves their chocolate cake. Maybe our expectations were too high. When they say their Key Lime Pie is award winning, I had perfection in mind. Birthday celebration of 4 friends should give a pretty good idea of this bakery's KLP after we had indulged and discussed. Sooo, a breakdown by layers. The thick graham cracker crust is in fact perfect, we all ate every crumb of the nutty firm flavorful crust which won't turn instantly soggy = A. The main layer of creamy key lime could have been much tangier. It was good, just not great = B. And then there is the real whipped cream layer on top. Very thick, so thick it didn't melt at all after sitting on the table over half an hour. So thick that we agreed it was just shy of being whipped into butter, and it was bland. So unappealing that we all scraped off a substantial amount of the whipped cream and left it sitting on our plates. We even debated as to whether we could put the topping into a mixer to finish it into butter = C. 3stars for 3 Brothers Bakery's KLP because it's just not worth the price with a third of the pie being decidedly unappealing. By contrast, I recently bought a key lime pie at Sam's Club (sadly discontinued) for about half the price and didn't share it because it was so fabulous. Similar terrific thick nutty graham crust, with tangy key lime filling and lighter more delicate whipped cream topping. I ate every single crumb and graded it an A. The 4 of us agreed Three Brothers Bakery could do so much better with this particular pie. read more

I bought an Italian Cream cake and while it was beautiful and tasted delicious, it was unfortunately dry. I've never had a bad experience before with this bakery and I will continue to support it as they always have amazing treats and consistently great customer service. We started using Three Brothers Bakery when my husband worked with the Astros and the bakery provided cakes for their events. Now, I am lucky enough that this is my neighborhood bakery. I have been buying my sons birthday cakes at this place for his last 3 birthday parties. We always had a great experience and the cakes have always been on point ( decoration and taste ). But this year we had an unpleasant experience. Not only did their prices on cakes have increased, but the quality in taste has gone downhill. I've encountered Three Brothers bakery various times. I've enjoyed several cakes for birthdays and other events. The Black Velvet for my birthday was amazing - and I'm a chocolate lover/snob. We stopped in today specifically for macaroons. I've been on a coconut spree the last few months. I didn't know if they would have them but went anyways. Boy was I in for a treat. The macaroons dipped in chocolate were $2.25 each. I got two for a decent snack/dessert but one was dense enough. Saved the second. It was dense, moist like cake, but still rich with flakes of coconut. Different from the fluffy and crisp ones I've had elsewhere (cough Kroger cough). This bakery also just smells amazing. Just stop in to enjoy that alone. Great seating and potentially a great study spot. They are supposedly working on getting wifi for customers. Not there as of 1/30/2017. With coffee and endless treats, I would easily become a regular. I'm sure other students would follow suit. Staff was friendly as always and interior clean. Lovely tables and mouthwatering cakes. Seriously? An average of four stars for this place? We were in Houston visiting my mother, who had ordered some kind of cinnamon/swirl bread from Three Brothers and sent us to pick it up. While we were there we bought a few things. Big mistake. Has no one ever told the owners of this bakery... ... that snickerdoodles are not just sugar cookies. They are cookies baked with cream of tarter (thus a slightly different taste and texture from regular sugar cookies) and rolled in cinnamon sugar. After paying more than $5 for two cookies, we discovered that they're just plain sugar cookies. With not much flavor, to boot. ... that lemon muffins are supposed to taste like lemon. Luckily, we only got one of those, for $2.75. It was sweet with no discernible flavor. ... that petit fours are small cakes with icing on all sides. Like a real cake. The petit fours here ARE THE WORST! They simply baked a large sheet cake, iced the whole thing on top, cut it into tiny squares (thus the supposed "petit fours"), then squiggled a little design on each square. Since they are packed so closely in the glass display case it's easy not to notice that the squares aren't iced on all sides, like true petit fours. Then they charge a whopping $2.50 EACH for these tiny cake squares. What a rip-off. We're glad that's all we decided to try, besides picking up the fall-apart, rather dry cinnamon bread. I didn't dare ask my mother how much she paid for it. Note: I originally posted this review on the Washington St/Heights page, not realizing there are apparently three of these bakeries in Houston. Both of the ladies behind the counter were extremely friendly. They gave us samples of cupcakes they gave us some cookies to try. They told us how the three brothers bakery was founded by three brother that survived Auschwitz. How two of the brothers have passed away and how the son of one of the brothers is running the bakery with his wife. This bakery has amazing brownies wonderful challah. Stop #2 of mom's and my Bellaire bakery tour. The parking lot smells like sugar. We walk with heightened anticipation to their doors and note the beautifully decorated cakes in the window; one is decorated like a big wooden cigar box, replete with Cubans. Inside, it's bustling with Meyerland locals. I make a bee-line to the case with croissants and hope they have the cinnamon croissants I love; they do not. Meanwhile, my mom has a looksie at the cakes, cookies, and dessert bars appealingly laid out in the display cases. We end up with two huge red velvet cupcakes, two plain croissants, and two fancy croissant-like pastries with walnuts and chocolate. It was expensive and meh. First, the cupcakes had way too much icing. It seemed like more icing than cake. Second, what cake there was was not moist, but rather crumbly and not quite sawdust dry, but not particularly yummy either. The croissants were not flaky, buttery, yeasty like french croissants. These would do better as "crescents". As "crescents", they are sizable and have a nice, sticky (honey?) glaze. Finally, I saved the worst for last. The pastry with nuts and chocolate was bland and tasteless. It sure was pretty, but maybe that's what it was meant for, decoration, not eating. Our bakery tour hit gold with Moeller's, but sadly, pyrite with Three Brothers.* *I originally used the expression "pay dirt", but come to find out, it's not what I thought it meant. My favorite part, the coconut frosting, accented the top and also separated two layers of cake which is the way I like it. Three Brothers Bakery has, conveniently enough, 3 locations in the Houston area: on Washington, in Memorial and the original location, which I visited, on Braeswood. If you have lived in Houston for any length of time and you haven't yet heard of Three Brothers Bakery, then listen up! There is a story here and the story is good! The tale of Three Brothers Bakery began in Poland. In 1932, during a bakers' strike, two of the three brothers, twins Sigmund and Sol, began working at the bakery at the tender age of 10. When they were 19, Sigmund and Sol, along with the rest of the family, were interned in a Nazi concentration camp. On May 8th 1945, the two brothers, younger brother Max and their sister were liberated from the camp as the SS fled. On May 8th, 1949, the 3 brothers, Sigmund, Sol and Max opened the first Three Brothers Bakery in Houston, Texas. They struggled at first, moving the bakery from Holman Street to Almeda in 1954 and finally to South Braeswood in 1960, where I stand today. Three Brothers Bakery is so rich in history that you can feel it within the walls of this heavenly aroma-filled jewel which definitely adds to the experience here. You can taste the tradition, love and passion for baking in every single bite. Although I am usually out eating at restaurants and sipping wonderful craft beers, today I find myself in this landmark Houston Bakery with a nice, cold glass of whole milk.
