    Filet dinner.
    Tara U.

We ate here during our first visit to the HMT trail system (we drove in our vehicle, didn't ride direct from the trails). It was busy on a Saturday night. For a first time visitor, it was confusing. You walk in and shuffle down (no hostess) to a cafeteria line. You order your drinks first, get a tray and push it along. Food next - you order from a large board. Then you take a number and go find your own seat. They have a salad bar and a large hot bar. The salad was great - fresh and lots of toppings! I ordered the filet and my husband ordered a ribeye. When our plates arrived, my heart sank. My filet looked like a burnt pork chop. I did order it medium well, but it looked charred. The ribeye looked delicious though! I was pleasantly surprised though after trying it. It was tasty! It didn't look like the filet I'm used to, but had a very good taste. My husbands ribeye was perfect as well. Overall, the food was wonderful. Our total was $50 and change for two steak dinners and a salad bar. If they had better communication or signs for first timers, they would have gotten 5 stars.

Typical independent buffet style restaurant. Food was middle of the road but worth the money.

The food is always good. The steaks are tender and the salad is fresh. I would recommend this steak house.

This was the first place that we've tried where we did not have to add any seasoning at all.

I do believe we were the only people in there eating. We went around 7:00 pm on a Saturday night. There might have been 15 other people there. Looks aside, the food wasn't terrible. I have certainly had better steaks, but their salad bar, though tiny, was actually good. We also had an appetizer called cheese balls that wasn't bad. It was essentially deep fried cheddar cheese, similar to cheese curds. The menu is very small. They don't have much else besides appetizers and steaks, plus a few sandwiches. Strangely, they have frog legs. I tried one, and it was actually one of the best I've ever had. If I ever go back, I will certainly be getting an order. It was a bit uncomfortable to eat here. I felt like the other patrons were staring us down. Like I said, it's a bar first, so those people were probably regulars. The table I was sitting was a little sticky, but the waitress was nice. The people in there were smoking, so that might be a dealbreaker for some. There was a pool table, a few games, and a stage full of musical equipment. I think the kitchen shuts down at 9:00 pm, but the bar stays open until midnight. There was a band getting ready to play just as we left. I think you have to pay a cover charge to stay in the place past 9:00.

On the first occasion, we were a group of 9 and we ordered appetizers (including the beer cheese with pretzel bots which was super tasty!!) salads and mains. Everyone really enjoyed their meals along with our amazing server. Food quality was very good, like elevated bar food/gastro pub cuisine, with nice touches, such as the goat cheese salad with fried rounds of creamy goat cheese on a generous bed of fresh greens, served with cranberries and slivered almonds and a creamy raspberry dressing. One thing I was a little disappointed with was the brusselsprouts salad. This was recommended by friends and touted as a 'house favorite'. But the brusselsprouts were not fresh, and were overcooked - likely they were canned or frozen then cooked with the bacon and blue cheese. The bacon and blue cheese helped the overall flavor, but as someone who LOVES both the flavor and texture of fresh brusselsprouts fried/ caramelized, I had expected something different. On the second occasion, we ordered lunch to go for 12 people, mostly salads plus desserts. We had been advised to order between 10 am and 11 am the day we wanted take out, which we did, but apparently, so did a bunch of other large groups....so our order which was to be picked up at 11:30 am wasn't ready til 12:40 pm. Even so, food did not disappoint, and everything was nicely seasoned, cooked well and fresh. A couple more things of note: -- Several people ordered the sweet potato fries at dinner and for lunch, and everyone raved at how special they were, especially with the sugary/buttery dipping sauce. I am a little sad I missed out on them! -- During dinner, we were too full for dessert but decided to get it with lunch; I had the chocolate lava cake which was totally decadent; others ordered the lemon berry cake and salted caramel cheesecake - everyone raved the desserts were fantastic! Overall, when dining in, the decor of this historic-house-turned-restaurant is eclectic and inviting. The bar atmosphere, friendly and well versed staff, and great menu beckon you back for future meals. Definitely a special spot in Prestonsburg! And don't forget to get dessert!
