Such an extensive list, the cellar door workers choose a 5-7 tasting flight from that for you, based on what's open and tasting great at that moment I imagine. All were good. There's three or four price brackets for their wines too, which means there's something for every wine lover regardless of budget. The two workers were funny and friendly - definitely "characters" which made the visit an entertaining one. The chap was great at bringing different groups of tasters chatting and laughing together, making it such a relaxed atmosphere. (The two dogs sleeping by the fireplace didn't hurt either). Bonus for us was that we were invited back the next morning fort a barrel tasting session. We spent a great hour down there in a small group tasting five or six early versions of wines we had tried the afternoon before, as well as some new ones. Completely free too. Amazing experience. Note that there was a $5 suggested donation to a charity for all tastings, which they didn't push on customers at all, but it's a worth cause so pony up if you do pop in. The wines are well worth it.

Their Barbera, Grenache, Tannat are all exceptional - the highlight being the Three Gardens SMG blend that really showcases their strength (and for a total bargain price too). I'm not the world's biggest port fan, but those in our party that were swooned at their Tawny. Staff were super nice even though they were busy at times juggling different groups. It's tiny. I mean, you can barely fit 10 people into the tasting area. This however, is not a negative. Its actually quite a nice, warm and inviting area. The people who were serving were very friendly and used to dealing with multiple crowds in a small area. The wines were good, but it's the service which made it memorable. Would recommend as a place to visit - not for the scenery, but the lovely wines and people.

I need to preface this review by saying when my friend and I made reservations to eat here a few…read moreweeks ago, we had been on the road, wine tasting for many days. By the time we sat down to our meal--served either with or without wine pairings--we were, to put it bluntly, all boozed out. My good Melbournian mate, whose powers of drink are formidable, summed it up to the waitress: "I would never have thought to hear myself say this, but I simply can't drink anymore!" We had, instead, complimentary sparkling water all night. So this review lacks what is a key part of this (or any) fine meal. Hentley Farms is in an extremely lovely setting: the Barossa Valley at its finest. The wine tasting room is a bit too self-consciously rustic, but the restaurant across a short lawn is a wonderfully modern, understated place--elegant and unpretentiously Australian. The tables are well-spaced apart and the waitstaff are plentiful and attentive. There's a great deal of personal care and a sense of privacy for such a public eating space. It was a seven course degustation, as is common in finer restaurants these days, along with a number of bouche amusées. In general, each was attractively presented, along with an often exhaustive description of each course (also increasingly common these days). In the case of Hentley Farms, however, a sous chef instead of waitstaff is dispatched to explain each dish, which allowed me to ask several questions. The head chef came out at the end and spoke with us warmly. I thought this was a reasonable twist on what is a necessary, if occasionally annoying intrusion. The dishes themselves were, of course, beautiful to look at, and often to taste. The fresh oysters in passionfruit juice with the essence of rosemary steaming underneath them in dry ice was an especially memorable (and flavorful) dish. The egg custard palate cleanser between the main dishes and desserts was also spectacular, served charmingly in an eggshell. But like so many fine restaurants, Hentley suffered slightly from less than memorable main courses. The meal started well and finished well, with excellent appetizers (if you can really call any course that in a degustation menu) and sweets after. The two "main" courses, however, a vegetable dish and a selection of two meats, while well-prepared, were sadly largely forgettable. The desserts were fairly good, especially the "pops" and candies that were not part of the seven course offerings. I am not sure the dinner ranked as one of my finest culinary experiences, but overall I had a very pleasant and pleasurable experience. And for service, I can only compare Hentley Farms to Chez Panisse. It is an extremely well-run restaurant, with an eye for detail and the needs of the patron. That in itself can make all the difference between a good meal and refined dining.

If you're only going to go to one winery in Barrosa, this is the one! They don't call it Icon of…read morethe Barrosa for nothing. I've been to wineries throughout Napa and the central coast in California and in other states. I'd rank Chateau Tanunda right alongside the best of those. It's kind of behind the main township of Tanunda, and is not obvious. There is no signage pointing until you are very close, unlike other cellar doors. The Artisans of the Barossa restaurant / cellar door has such a lovely set up. The building is big and open. They have installed large foldback glass doors, so it opens the area so you can enjoy the view outside. I also imagine that in winter it would still provide a great barrier for the cold outside, while framing the view. So, you get the best of both worlds inside and out. When you arrive at this restaurant, be sure to report to the counter to be seated. When I arrived I asked whether we could find a table. I was very abruptly interrupted and told that I would need a reservation. The gentleman that I think ran the restaurant was quite precious about the seating. So, lucky I asked. No need for that attitude though, I didn't just sit down. I did ask. Anyway... The Artisans of Barossa is a fine collection of boutique wineries & food sourced from local produce. The menu is impressive, and seems seasonal. We wanted some shared plates and went for the Fried Chicken, Jamon and Beetroot skordalia. The fried chicken was really tasty. It has been marinated for a while, so it had a darker colour. But, it was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Perfect! I could see that it was a popular dish as well. Many orders were running past me. Next up the Jamon. Well, you know when you have a great quality Jamon. It was sliced thin, but not too thin. It was sweet, not too fatty and was nicely preserved. A nice accompaniment with the pickles and artichoke. Finally, the Beetroot skordalia. It was very fresh and earthy. Served with crumbled feta and (wait for it) beetroot chips. Oh yes, what a fab idea. It gave it that crunch and body that worked so well. It really lifted the dish. If you go to the Barossa, be sure to visit here. You would be silly not to. There is something special about this place. Might be worth booking ahead though. Otherwise, just be polite to the Restaurant Manager.

In fact, the wine itself isn't all that bad either. While it is close to Tanunda, it is still a bit of a hike from the town, but then again you pretty much need a car to get anywhere in the Barossa.

It is such a heaving, complex beast, the winery, if you ever get a chance to check out the guts of one on your travels. Everything from planting, protecting, feeding and nurturing (I'm not kidding, Turkey Flat sprayed sunscreen on their vines last vintage! Who woulda thunk it!?) the vines, to the picking, producing, fermenting, bottling, marketing etc etc etc, there are a LOT of moving parts! And to try and understand them is why some people spend years at university learning the craft. However, most wineries won't give you all of their dirty little secrets (alright, some of them might, but they don't want to ruin their chance of a sale so it's unlikely!) that most of the winery workers know. Turkey Flat is the exception for me here. Not that there were any dirty little secrets to be told this time around, but the cellar door attendant, despite only doing 1 day a week, was extremely knowledgable about all of the wines and provided us with some great info on the various vintages, grapes and also general goings on in the area, following the Annual Barossa Vintage Festival which was held last weekend. Go check out the website for more info on the wines, and do yourself a favour and pop in here while you're up in the BV. It's a worthwhile experience and you will taste some truly magic wines.
