The service was friendly and, most importantly, the wines are quite good, and they have a nice variety to try many different styles and varietals -- from a bubbly blanc de noirs (including not only pinot but also grenache), some good shiraz, and a cabernet that was our favorite so far that we have tried in Australia (and quite reasonably priced, as well.)

I need to preface this review by saying when my friend and I made reservations to eat here a few…read moreweeks ago, we had been on the road, wine tasting for many days. By the time we sat down to our meal--served either with or without wine pairings--we were, to put it bluntly, all boozed out. My good Melbournian mate, whose powers of drink are formidable, summed it up to the waitress: "I would never have thought to hear myself say this, but I simply can't drink anymore!" We had, instead, complimentary sparkling water all night. So this review lacks what is a key part of this (or any) fine meal. Hentley Farms is in an extremely lovely setting: the Barossa Valley at its finest. The wine tasting room is a bit too self-consciously rustic, but the restaurant across a short lawn is a wonderfully modern, understated place--elegant and unpretentiously Australian. The tables are well-spaced apart and the waitstaff are plentiful and attentive. There's a great deal of personal care and a sense of privacy for such a public eating space. It was a seven course degustation, as is common in finer restaurants these days, along with a number of bouche amusées. In general, each was attractively presented, along with an often exhaustive description of each course (also increasingly common these days). In the case of Hentley Farms, however, a sous chef instead of waitstaff is dispatched to explain each dish, which allowed me to ask several questions. The head chef came out at the end and spoke with us warmly. I thought this was a reasonable twist on what is a necessary, if occasionally annoying intrusion. The dishes themselves were, of course, beautiful to look at, and often to taste. The fresh oysters in passionfruit juice with the essence of rosemary steaming underneath them in dry ice was an especially memorable (and flavorful) dish. The egg custard palate cleanser between the main dishes and desserts was also spectacular, served charmingly in an eggshell. But like so many fine restaurants, Hentley suffered slightly from less than memorable main courses. The meal started well and finished well, with excellent appetizers (if you can really call any course that in a degustation menu) and sweets after. The two "main" courses, however, a vegetable dish and a selection of two meats, while well-prepared, were sadly largely forgettable. The desserts were fairly good, especially the "pops" and candies that were not part of the seven course offerings. I am not sure the dinner ranked as one of my finest culinary experiences, but overall I had a very pleasant and pleasurable experience. And for service, I can only compare Hentley Farms to Chez Panisse. It is an extremely well-run restaurant, with an eye for detail and the needs of the patron. That in itself can make all the difference between a good meal and refined dining.

So much so that they were recently awarded a regional council grant to produce their brochure which not only features them but also coupons and suggestions for other family-friendly activities in the Barossa! Adelaide being Adelaide we realised that we knew one of the folk behind the bar - turns out we had worked with each other at an inner-suburban pub in a previous life - and he and his siblings are continuing their learning in order to take over the winery from their parents one day. With multiple play equipment, a kangaroo enclosure, scavenger hunt, lawned area, books and toys, Whistler Wines can accommodate you & your family both inside and out. Best of all, they serve wine!

Their Barbera, Grenache, Tannat are all exceptional - the highlight being the Three Gardens SMG blend that really showcases their strength (and for a total bargain price too). I'm not the world's biggest port fan, but those in our party that were swooned at their Tawny. Staff were super nice even though they were busy at times juggling different groups. Been to the Barossa a heap and almost ashamed that this was my first time here - will be back soon for sure. * Of course you'll leave with a bottle or 12

We knew this place had fortified wines -- that's what brought us here -- but we were not aware it had quality soleras and sherries including fino, amontillado, olaroso, as well as sweeter tokay. Very tasty, and reasonably priced until you get into the higher-end categories.

It's cosy, but will fit a car-load of five no problems. Note though that it is COLD in there in the winter months so you really have to try and warm the wine up with the glass in your hands to get a true sense of the taste, but once there you'll find a great selection of Barossa reds on display. A pleasure to taste a few $200 bottles as part of the tasting too. Tasting is free, but of course you buy a bottle, and Greenock Creek that's no pity buy I can tell you right now!

Tscharke's Place is just down the road from The Louise, a lovely local restaurant. As you wind your…read moreway around the main shed you are confronted by a gorgeous Bavarian-styled chalet and upon entry with an all wood decor that just feels right. The gent who guided us through tasting claimed the owner had the contents made in Germany and shipped to and assembled at the winery!! Someone who does that is clearly serious and passionate. They have a small upstairs area where you can sit and sip and check out some local pottery, also made by the owner, or gaze out the window or at the tasting below. There is also an awesome room in the basement for group/private tastings which I have now put in my diary - I will be coming back. It's like a candle lit dungeon room and the owner runs a full tasting session for groups at a very affordable $15 per person - all wines are tasted. The wines they offer are overall cheaper than at other wineries and that in itself will bring me back. Not that I don't wish all winemakers every success but wine prices have been rising sharply and I have my limits, regardless of the occasion. They have a few wines at $10 which alone puts them in a unique position and the wines are not at all bad. They are lighter varieties, as indicated by the price, but worth tasting because not everything needs to cling to the roof of your mouth. Graciano and Montepulciano in particular drink very well and will give Sangiovese anywhere a run for its money. My wife enjoyed the Savagnin, their only white option. All their (3) shiraz offerings, especially the Gnadenfrei, were great, as was the Grenache, but one of the highlights was their fortified Lumberjack Touriga. Leave that one to finish off your tasting.

While it was worth it to taste them, I'm not sure the pricetags are warranted, and the experience overall felt a bit stuffy and impersonal (but it could just be that the workers were distracted by the worries of an unprecedented heatwave and shifting winds that have led to precarious bushfire conditions)

If you're only going to go to one winery in Barrosa, this is the one! They don't call it Icon of…read morethe Barrosa for nothing. I've been to wineries throughout Napa and the central coast in California and in other states. I'd rank Chateau Tanunda right alongside the best of those. The grounds are beautiful and the wines were all very enjoyable. Larry took care of us during our tasting and did an exceptional job. He was personable and full of relevant information. Don't miss this one!

Actually, it is supposed to be a replica of a French Chateau, so no doubt the original vintier was a bit of an eccentric (as well as being pretty wealthy as well). The place is huge, and they have a lovely outdoor area where you can sit and drink wine, and their selection is pretty big as well. The cellar door area is nothing short of amazing. As for the wine, well, yeah, it's pretty good too.

Seppeltsfield Road is also referred to as Palm Avenue because it is a road stretch in the Barossa…read morethat is surrounded by palms. And I don't just mean there's a few of them on the sides. There's plenty and it looks really quite amazing. Apart from the obvious Seppeltsfield winery, others like Hentley Farm, Schutz, Two Hands, Greenock Creek or Barossa Valley Estate can be visited along the way. There's a good selection of accommodation around, the most famous place being The Louise with it's renowned restaurant Appellation. If you visit the Barossa, make sure to have a drive along Seppeltsfield Road, it's only a few km's from Tanunda. And don't forget to visit some wineries while at it.
