Thom's is such a cool shop. While it doesn't have a huge footprint, it packs a lot of punch in the space it has. Thom is extremely nice and knowledgeable; heck, I'd go back just to chat with him. The selection was good; I found some back issues I had been struggling to find at other shops, and Thom bags and boards everything so the condition was top notch. He even took an extra 10% off the top on the comics I bought, which I so appreciated (standard discount on comics I believe, but do ask him)! Important to note - the shop is cash only and has been for a long time. There are ATMs at nearby shops, so don't let it deter you from stopping by. Great value, amazing service, and fantastic selection. Nothing more you could want in your local comic store. I look forward to shopping here again. read more

I grew up in Elgin and was into comics as a kid but somehow never knew about this place. I went here for the first time earlier this summer and man I didn't know what I've been missing. Excellent selection, friendly owner, what more can you ask for? Thom is very knowledgeable and you can tell he's been at this for years and it's not just a business to him. This place is great. I called 5 stores in the area asking for Doomsday Clock issues 7-9 first print to update my collection but no one had them. If they did have them it was a second print. I called Tom and he said call him back in 5 minutes so I did and he came through. He had all three issues. I will be coming here for future business, it is a bit of a drive but worth it. He had a large collection of statues, action figures and comics. If you are in the area stop in and look around you will end up buying something it's hard not to. Visited here on Free Comic Book day. I always like to support the local shops by buying additional comics as well. I found a couple comics I really wanted, and went up to pay. Since I didn't have cash, I figured I'd pay with my debit card - you know like most of the world does right now? However, he *doesn't accept debit or credit cards." What? Why would I even shop there then? I rarely carry cash. I couldn't get the comics. More to the point, he was EXTREMELY unfriendly about the whole situation, like it was my fault. In addition, the shop is small, very poorly organized and I agree that some things are overpriced. read more

Things are overpriced and it is not a welcoming shop to go in. he also does not have any of the newer comics in stock. I bought comics, limited edition hardcover books, and all kinds of cool stuff for over 20 years from Tom. He was always friendly, honest, helpful, and knowledgeable about everything in his store. Don't know where Agustin was visiting- all the new comics are at Tom's every Friday, and if there's a little-known title you're interested in he'll get it! I bought comics for over 35 years, and Tom's was where I (and my kids) got the most for our money! Btw, I had quit my comic 'habit' a few years ago, but stopped in last month and Tom welcomed me like I'd been there every week. If you want something like that comic guy show or to play Magic card tournaments there's plenty of other places, but if you're a serious collector/reader you can't go wrong at Tom's comics! read more

It's a small and cosy place. If you don't pay attention you might drive by it without even noticing. But if you are lucky enough to find it you won't regret it. This is truly a diamond in the rough. This place has a lot of comic books, graphic novels and toys. But I have to admit the best part is the owner's personality. Tom, the owner, is a down to earth and friendly guy. Please let me start off by saying Thom knows a whole lot about the Golden age of comics. Whatever idiot says that he doesn't clearly just wants more customers to go to modern age. Thom's prices are always cheaper, never over priced as one reviewer said. He isn't in it to strike it big, he has had a store for years! I first started going to Thom's when I was 13, he had the cheapest price for yu gi oh cards and was in the neighborhood. These days at the age of 21 I go to Thom's for all of my collectibles and comics, he never hesitates to put in an order for me if there's something that Diamond select is putting out. Every month he gets a catalog and puts in his orders, just like any other vendor. Thom's is nice because he knows me on a first name basis, he's more of a friend at this point rather than some neck beard who wants my money like the guys at other stores. The only bad thing I would say about the store is the size, Thom has so many things he could showcase but doesn't have the room for it all upstairs. Tom is very helpful and store has a decent variety of comics. If you're interested in buying a specific comic series be sure to know the numbers of the issues, Tom will likely be able to get them for you. I went in there a saturday afternoon to get the Spiderverse series, he told me he will have all the issues the next day and he did. read more

Hands down the best comic shop that I have been to and here is why. I started collecting comics when I was 13 or so years old. As I got older the comic shops around me closed one by one and so getting comics were not always easily accessible. When the DC announced the New 52 in the news I went to my storage space that had my comics and I made an inventory of all of the partial sets that I had and went looking for a comic shop that would not only help me fill the holes in my collection but get me set up with the new 52 titles that I wanted pulled. I had never heard of Thom's comics but it wasn't far from where I lived and the moment I got their I felt at home. Thom jumped right in with my list and let me browse his shop while he searched his extensive back issue collection that he has. I was floored, he helped me fill just about every hole that I had on my list and if he couldn't he even offered other comic shops as suggestions to complete it. It took about 3 or 4 trips to his store to fill the collection holes but going to visit, I felt like a kid again. Thom is the picture of customer service and when we were finished with the back issues I needed, we then made a list of the future titles that I wanted pulled on a weekly basis. I will tell you this, the person that made the comment about Thom not reading comics may be partially true but to me that was actually a good thing. I did visit said "Modern Age Comics" asking about a certain title. Not only was I ridiculed for choosing a "boring" title but then I was quizzed on my knowledge of comics history as if I wasn't allowed to buy unless I passed a test. Did I ask for a pop quiz before you take my money?? Just because I am not proficient in all that is the comic book universe doesn't mean that I can't enjoy the books that I do buy and collect others that I have a small interest in. If I want to debate comics or be quizzed on the Marvel or DC mythos then I will buy a trivia app on my phone to do so. I found that this is about par for the course in a lot of comic book shops, and it must not have been the best business practice because "modern age comics" is no longer in business. The best comic book shop has the issues that you may have missed and pulls the upcoming issues that you want. Add in all the special collectibles and memorabilia that Thom has and you have now described what is Thom's Comics. Even though this is long, I'd like to share another story. When Thom was pulling the issues that I requested, my life got really busy and I was unable to make it to his shop for weeks, weeks turned into months. I corresponded with Thom and because I established a customer relationship with him and his shop Thom continued to pull the issues that I needed. When I did have time to come to his shop, which this last long stretch was over 6 months! Thom had everything I had asked for bagged and ready for me as if I had just seen him yesterday. So if you want pretentious comic book aficionados that will only sell you a book if you know which character debuted in the original series, issue 45 on page 12 then look elsewhere. But if you want comics, collectibles, card decks, figurines, busts, statues, graphic novels, etc. and want the piece of mind that you will get what you asked for AND get it most of the time at a discounted price? Then this is absolutely the comic shop for you. read more

Amazing comic store. For a small building it is organized pretty well. I love coming here every week to see what the flash or ghost rider is up to. I don't know, maybe Thom is friendly to some people but I find him uptight and unfriendly. I don't think I've ever seen him smile. I doubt he has a sense of humor. And I agree, the shop is poorly organized and overcrowded. That's okay if you like that kind of thing, I guess, but I find it claustrophobic. Hours are limited, so don't just drop by expecting him to be open. Check first. Don't park in the lot when it snows. I got stuck there once. read more
