SGC Garage Door - garage door opener replacement

SGC Garage Door

I had used SGC twice in the past 18 years with satisfactory results, so the very bad experience on…read morethis 3rd time came as a shock, and makes me wonder if it is even the same SGC, though they claimed to me over the phone they were. I wondered because the first two times they were local to where I live in Redondo Beach, CA, but this time I noted they were in Napa, CA. But they said they knew me, so I asked them to send someone to my house to repair or replace my garage door opener. Someone did come to my house, but they were not SGC, but instead were branded something generic, "Garage Door Repair & Install. These guys said they were dispatched to my home by SGC, so I went with it. They charged me $3500 for a $400 Liftmaster 2420L opener, plus labor. The labor charges were reasonable, but the $3000 overcharge for the opener was egregious. Then they had the nerve to tell me they would charge an additional 3% for paying with a credit card. I blame this on SGC because I verbally contracted with SGC, not these guys. But SGC refuses to talk to me, and they hang up their phone when I call them. I already wrote a review for the folks who came to my house. They have numerous bad reviews if you google their phone number, including 12 complaints with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Those folks operate under different names (hence the useless, generic name they gave me on the invoice with no address), but if you do an internet search for their phone number, you find them on sites such as Yelp, Angi's list, and BBB, with many complaints similar to mine. But this review is for SGC. SGC was obviously in cahoots with these guys for several reasons. First, it was SGC that dispatched them to my home. Second, when I first called SGC to get an explanation for the 700% markup on the new opener, they acknowledged the dollar amount I was charged, and tried to explain it away, and then said their boss would call me back. I had several rounds of phone calls, each time they promised me the boss would call me back. After several days of this, they now just hang up on me. Third, I emailed them from their home page where you request services, but I never got a response. Fourth, the email address listed on their home page is bogus. And fifth, the first two times I contracted with SGC in my local neighborhood, they listed a California business license. This time they don't. Stay away from SGC would be my advice.

Later that day (after making the play) I contacted multiple garage door repair vendors in the area for quotes. Most of the quotes for the spring repair were similar in price, but what stood out to me about Garage Door Excellence was that Mike's response was much more informative and personable than the others. He was also upfront in answering my questions about potential replacement of my outdated LiftMaster unit. I scheduled an appointment, and Dakota appeared the very next morning. He was also very knowledgeable and helpful, and I never felt like they were trying to upsell anything. I wound up going with two high cycle springs on their recommendation. Even though slightly more expensive, the added durability would be worth it since we open/close the garage door several times a day. Thank you, Mike & Dakota, for your professionalism and honest advice...we know who to turn to for our garage door repairs in the future!!

Great Service but Either Unethical Practice or Poorly Trained Office Staff…read more My solid wood garage door was soaked from rain, so the extra weight was too much for the motor; adding tension to the springs seemed the solution. Since they are in the area, A1 was the first service I called. I spoke to a very pleasant women and explained in detail the issue. She said a tech could come by in a few hours and the cost would be $99. I followed by specifically asking if that included re-tensioning the spring. She said it did and made no mention of any other possible charges. Since the cost seemed very reasonable and the service would be prompt, I didn't call any other services and gave her my information. The tech came out, was very pleasant and proceeded to add 3 turns to each of the 2 springs. He then sprayed some lubricant on the rollers. Elapsed work time perhaps 12 minutes. All the billing and payment was processed on the tech's phone. He displayed the company's pick list of service items and related costs so I could see the cost for spring maintenance is $240. When I said it was to be $99, he replied that was just the diagnostic fee which would be waved in lieu of the service fee. I was in no position to argue so I paid the amount charged. Only 2 possibilities- Either the phone staff is new and poorly trained, or this is deliberate fraud. Allowing for the possibility of the former, I gave an extra star. (Note my Yelp address is not the service location)

They offered a same-day appointment, a preliminary diagnosis, and estimated cost. They said there was a fee associated with the visit that would be covered in the cost of the repair. Fair enough. I made the appointment and then proceeded to call the higher rated companies for their pitch. No one could get here the same day, all had similar visit fees, and none were local. A1 dispatched Aiden. He was on time, friendly, and very efficient. The door was fully repaired in under 40 mins. He left the job spotless and he lubed the entire mechanism. I am very satisfied and can highly recommend A1 for all your garage door needs.
