I was fed up with scheduling appointments a month out with almost no / limited flexibility. I was tired of having to make small talk with the stylists. I was tired of paying a whole lot more. Now, I don't personally get my haircut on here, but I have a father and brother who do and I can say with certainty: Tommy Thomas and his shop are a force of nature in Atlanta! Tommy knows everyone. And anyone and everyone who's anybody or wants to know the local scoop has probably paid a visit to Tommy's shop over the years. You are pretty much guaranteed to get a glimpse of a local politician, hear some reliable info about local businesses (think Home Depot and the like) and just enjoy your experience, and your haircut. Tommy also gets to know his customers; one year, for my notoriously hard-to-buy-for father, I got Tommy to do "gift certificates." This isn't the kind of salon that has them on hand, so he wrote them out on business cards and my dad had his haircuts covered for the next year! But coolest of all? Tommy's mother, the lovely Mrs. Thomas, gives great man-manicures (you know, just enough trim and buff, nothing threatening) from her seat at the back corner of the shop. This barber shop was recommended by a co worker. While the location does look like a bit of a hole in the wall, I was very pleased with my haircut and it's fair price. I walked right in and was greeted by a not so enthusiastic lady, but non the less, she gave a very good haircut. A nice warm neck and side burn shave was also included for $25 standard men's haircut (CASH ONLY). I will definitely return and recommend it to anyone who isn't scared away by its appearance! This morning I got my hair trimmed at Thomas Barber Shop for the first time and could not be more pleased. The new trim is perfect. Watch out ladies! I was referred to Tommy Thomas' Barber Shop by a friend who has been coming here for years. I'm so happy that he told me about this fine institution. This same friend was actually there getting his hair cut when I arrived. I walked into the barber shop at 6:50am and was seated with Celia right away. She asked how I wanted my hair cut and then she began to work her magic. As she trimmed my hair she kept me in the loop about how she was cutting it and the length she was cutting it. After my trim she pulled out the hot shave lather and a straight razor (a staple in old fashion shops) and shaved my neck and around my ears. All for only $16. I left Thomas Barber Shop with a fancy new haircut that I can appreciate and will certainly return for next haircut. read more

This is an Atlanta institution, and a time-warp. Let me clarify it's one of the best time-warps I've ever encountered. A lot of places try and pull off the old-time barber shop feel, and look. Thomas Barber Shop doesn't have to fake this; that's what it always has been, and what it will always be. This is the neighborhood barber shop. If you have been in more than once everybody knows who you are, and the camaraderie extends not only between their wonderful staff and their customers, but, very rarely do you visit any business where there is the same open dialog and discussion between patrons as well. The laid-back neighborhood atmosphere permeates all aspects of the location. Go in on a Saturday and they'll have a box of warm donuts waiting in the back, and a group of locals will be huddled around a television cheering on an SEC football game. Thomas' Barber Shop is as much a social experience as it is a wonderful haircut, and is the only place in Atlanta I feel comfortable saying "take it short." On top of that, where else in Buckhead can you walk in to get a haircut without an appointment with a $20 bill, tip the barber, and walk out with money left over? This is the type of barber-shop startups wish they could emulate, but never will because you can't recreate a rich history. read more

This place has a rave following. There is a lot of college memorabilia on the walls, and I suspect that it is from kids that have been getting their hair cut there for years, only to return with their jerseys, pictures, etc. to display in there. There is usually always a crowd in there waiting for a haircut from the main man, but it's pretty easy to just walk in and get a haircut if you're not picky who does it. My favorite thing about this place is that they have the clippers with suction. That means a lot to me because I have thick hair that goes everywhere when it gets cut. Suction= no hair down your back when you stand up! Nice! They also do a straight razor shave on your neck when your ears have just been lowered. Nice touch that reminds me of getting my hair cut by my childhood barber. Definitely recommend, since it's nice to go to someone's actual business instead of a franchise that seems to only hire slightly disgruntled, unkempt employees. Thumbs up! read more

This is an old school barber shop. If you're in search of a politically correct safe zone DO NOT COME BY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We don't want or need you. Just a group of guys sometimes more than one generation getting their hair cut and laughing and joking. Saturdays are a must get there early as Tommy and the crew are the best part of the day and the free doughnuts are good as well. Tommy treats everyone the same whether you're running for President or just one of the guys.....look at the pictures on the walls its a who's who of business, sports, politics, and just good folks. Tommy has the biggest heart and won't ask for contributions to charities but he's always working with one or helping out the scouts. Dad's love him for the hair cuts to the kids and the doughnuts and the Mom's well they have to deal with the sugar induced kids when they get home. I've been going there nearly 10 years and I'm still a newcomer. Its the last bastion of Americana hair cut, hot shave and When Tommy's dear Momma was alive a manicure, shoe shine. Haircuts in a rush (about 10-15 min), lots of irregularities in the cut and not realy well trimmed. They don't wash your head or ask if you want a pomade or anything, you only discover how bad it is when you take a shower. If you're looking for a real fading on your sides, specially if you have straight hair i would totally avoid this place as you can get lot better on atlanta for $2 more. For thr pros, the staff looked friendly and happy to work. Its more of a lack of trechnical skills. read more

Tommy's shop has always been amazing and wonderful. Most barber shops are all about hair removal and not about men's styling. This place understood men's styling and has never disappointed until today. My son has liked keeping longer hair than most, and that has always been respected at Tommy's which is why we always kept coming back. Today, Tommy let an employee's daughter "practice" without my knowledge of her limited experience with men's hair. (Her mother actually leaned in proudly to tell me (after the hair was cut) that she was trying to help her learn to cut men's hair. When I saw that she was cutting too much, I asked her to stop cutting and she would not stop. I ended up pulling my child out of the chair. Tommy watched this entire situation happen with no intervention, and he knew my child and his hair as we have been patrons for years. We are so angry, disappointed, and super sad. We will need to have the cut adjusted by another hair professional which will cost us in addition, and, no, the shop never even offered us a refund. read more

I was initially intimidated based on the reviews on Yelp. It definitely seemed like the kind of place where everyone was a regular and it's hard to be the new kid in town. This is not at all the case. I have been going to Tommy's now for about three years and have referred many friends. Be sure to introduce yourself to Tommy, and you'll instantly feel at home. Tommy's is an Atlanta landmark but also a great place to get a trim. There is a container lollipops by the cash register, the hot doughnuts in the back, and a straight razor of the neck. These things take me back to my childhood in the best possible way. It's not uncommon to see the CEO of an Atlanta-based business or even a potential presidential candidate stopping in for a shave. In the time that I have gone to Tommy's, all the barbers are friendly, courteous, and consistent. There is a reason Tommy's is an Atlanta landmark. read more

Went here yesterday and got the worst haircut I've ever had. The lady who cut my hair took less than 5 minutes and I had to have her clean up multiple areas that she missed once I got to look in the mirror. Once I got home and showered I found more areas where she left hair different lengths that I had to fix on my own. I would not go back to this barbershop. read more

Tanya cut my hair. She wasn't very friendly, but that's all fine if you can cut hair well. The haircut was about 15 minutes long and was very very rushed. I had her trim my beard and she did such an awful job trimming it that when I got home I decided to shave off my three month beard and start from scratch. I've been coming here for about 2 years now even though I live/work down in midtown. It's worth the drive. I get exactly what I want every time. Prices are really good/fair. Atmosphere is friendly. I thought I was getting a decent haircut because I like getting my neck shaved and they do this routinely. But I have found that the haircuts are generally hit and miss and sometimes just plain sloppy lasting maybe a couple of weeks. I had my haircut a month ago as I was getting ready to head to Europe. Tommy the owner took care of my young son with great attention to detail. He explained how to get rid of the dandruff and even showed us how to prevent him from getting cradle cap with oil. He went through a detailed explanation on how to better manage our young son's hair. He also took time to explain the right short cut to hide our sons multiple cowlicks. Quick service, in and out in a flash. The haircut was good. I had just shaved my head to support my grandmother and her hair loss from chemo, and was in need of a shape up/fade. There was no real connection. No names exchanged or anything with the lady that gave me my haircut. I think personal connections are really key to keeping long time clients, but in her defense I was really quiet because of being in a new place and also being a little nervous.. So it's all good. What a barber shop should be. $20 gets you a cut and change. Get a Coke, in a bottle, from the vending machine, grab a chair and get the cabbage trimmed back. This is a great old time barber shop run by Tommy with 7 wonderful, friendly barbers working, it's consistent, no fluff just get a great haircut, see friends, neighbors and be on your way. They open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m., closed on Tuesday and Sunday. A good amount of the customers have never gone anywhere else for a haircut since they were born or moved to Atlanta.
