I am a single father raising my kids on a strict, carefully balanced budget. In an area as expensive as San Jose, every single dollar matters. Between rent, groceries, school supplies, and childcare, there is almost nothing left over at the end of the month for personal care. I work long, exhausting hours, and after weeks of running on fumes, my body was aching. I saved up what little disposable income I had to treat myself to a basic foot massage just to decompress and recharge so I could keep showing up for my kids.
The service itself was mediocre and indifferent at best, but I was willing to let that slide. When the session wrapped up and it came time to pay, I handed over full payment for the service without hesitation. On top of the bill, I added a $5 cash tip. To some people, $5 might not seem like a fortune, but out of my tight monthly budget, that was genuinely a sacrifice. It meant skipping something else that week. Tipping is supposed to be a voluntary gesture of appreciation, and I gave what I could actually afford.
Instead of a basic "thank you," the receptionist looked down at the money with pure disgust. Before I could even turn around, the hostility started. The staff immediately began murmuring, scoffing, and glaring at me like I had committed a crime. I felt deeply uncomfortable, gathered my keys, and walked toward the exit.
That wasn't the end of it. They literally chased me out of the building.
An employee followed me through the front door, onto the sidewalk, aggressively confronting me in broad daylight. They were shouting, gesturing wildly, demanding more money, and openly calling me names in front of complete strangers passing by. I was completely stunned. I have never in my life had workers follow me outside to harass, intimidate, and insult me over a discretionary tip.
These people have no empathy, no manners, and zero idea what someone's personal situation might be. They don't know that the person they are verbally assaulting is a parent stretching every single cent just to stay afloat. They just see dollar signs, and if you don't fork over an exorbitant amount on command, they turn downright mean and abusive.
Nobody should ever be ambushed, degraded, or followed out to their car because of a tip. If you value your dignity, your peace of mind, or your hard-earned money, stay far away from Lucky Foot Spa on Saratoga Avenue. Take your business to an establishment that treats paying patrons with basic human decency.
Not to mention they also offered me a extra happy ending before the massage was over and I denied. And at the same time it smells really bad. My massage lady's name was Rachel
