I went here 4 years ago, so you might be wondering why I'm reviewing now. I had the unfortunate experience of being a one-time client of Adam. From the moment my friend and I walked in, we were treated like crap. We walked into an empty shop and went to the counter. I wanted a song lyric, she wanted a flower, to which he was visibly agitated and stated, "How original." I figured it might've been misplaced humor, but he didn't reassure it as such. Whatever, we planned to get the tattoos and we were there, who cares if the artist is rude as long as we get it done. Adam, my artist, went to work on my relatively small few words on my rib cage. I told him beforehand I was nervous, as this was my second tattoo and I had heard it was a pretty painful spot. During the tattoo, Adam loudly said, "Oops." What do you mean oops?? I panicked and asked if everything was okay and he said he was messing with me. There's nothing like being hostile during the initial tattoo request and then making a client uncomfortable during the actual tattoo. At the end, when I got up to look before I got wrapped, I noticed that there were a few white spots on the writing and that between some of the letters there seemed to be some ink that bled a little bit. I asked about it, and he told me that was normal and it would look normal after healing. I didn't know how untrue that was since this was my second tattoo, so I went on my way. Four years later, my tattoo is still splotchy, just the way Adam left it after I asked about the splotchy parts and white spots. I was quoted $150 at the start, and after 5 minutes of crappy work, I went to check out and suddenly it was $200. $200 on a genuinely terrible piece. It's still raised- I've healed all of my tattoos the same way and even ones in the same area healed right except for this one. Every artist that's seen it since has asked me if I would ever consider a cover up. Don't waste your time, money, or space on your body that you could put an actually nice tattoo on. read more

ZERO STARS. DO NOT COME HERE. STAPH INFECTION/ MRSA WARNING My partner did a walk in because of the decent reviews. NEVER IN MY LIFE HAVE I SEEN A TATTOO HEAL SO POORLY. He has gotten many tattoos in his life and chalked up the extra-long scabbing to Denver dry weather (he had just moved here from Portland, OR). Well, within a week multiple red "pimples" appeared around the edges of the tattoo. Soon, one of them developed into an urgent care visit (see pictures). Months later, he has been on 3 rounds of antibiotics for straight up MRSA and the scars are still there. And how has management handled this? NOT AT ALL. I began with a phone call, respectfully and as a courtesy to let them know. I spoke with the owner, Mike, who was completely defensive until I explained that I wasn't seeking to drag them through the mud or put anyone's job at risk. He began to listen as I told him this was no coincidence and that the doctors agreed. He insisted that my partner would have to return to Thick as Thieves and handle it with him, I told him that he would not be stepping foot back inside his business. Who would after contracting MRSA? He told me to email him. I sent him a respectful email detailing the situation and that he needs to make this right. No response. I sent an email again letting him know that at that point my partner was on a third round of antibiotics. NO RESPONSE. It's so sad that of all the amazing tattoo shops in this city, my partner picked this one on a whim because they were accepting walk ins. AVOID AVOID AVOID. A $180 tattoo became a $350 nightmare and that's with health insurance. read more

After reading such great reviews, I was a bit disappointed with my experience here. The staff was great and friendly, a nice quiet and clean shop which was great! But the quality and price of my tattoo were what disappointed me the most. I went in with a very simple piece in mind, and noticed that here there was a $60 shop minimum and $150/hr rate--this tattoo took no more than 20 minutes (plus prep time of course). When i got to check out and found my total to be $160 I was shocked, but figured a quality tattoo is definitely worth it (still felt a bit gypped). It's been a couple months now and the tattoo is fully healed and I can clearly see that the work was sub-par. Overall, it's a simple tattoo and there isn't too much to complain about, but some parts are clearly uneven and shaky. Had I paid less I wouldn't be as disappointed, but for that price and this quality I will not be returning for my next tattoo. read more

I will say this place has great reviews and I'm sure the artists do fantastic work! My partner and I called and asked if we could get in for some walk-in finger tats. We just wanted matching images on one finger. The tat was maybe an inch in length and 1/2 inch in height- small! We are from a bigger city in the Midwest, we both have numerous , quality tattoos from different artists all much larger than a small finger tat and priced under $200. So we were estimating this little finger tat would be about $80 min plus tip at most. HOLY HELL were we wrong!!! Adam charged us EACH $150 plus $20 fee for these tiny things ...plus tip we are talking $200 for a 3 min tattoo. It took longer for hm to get setup for the tattoo than it did for the actual tattooing. Highway robbery! I'm still in shock. Lesson learned I guess, double and triple check the price. we do like how the images turned out, so far, but would definitely not return due to the wild pricing. read more

Scott refused to listen to my ideas, he insisted on drawing what he wanted and told me to "trust him" I specifically said the stencil looked like a Disney cartoon and that was NOT what I wanted. He insisted I was "being difficult" and that the stencil was just so he would know where to shade and it in fact will not look like a cartoon. I had given him a $200 deposit on a full sleeve. He said the deposit is applied to the end of the sleeve. Fine. Well, I now have an evil Disney queen on my arm. It's huge and dark and all of the things I specifically said I did not want. I started crying (I have 9 other tattoos all of which I love) Scott refused to finish the piece charged me $440 (I paid in tears) for what is probably a $150 tattoo then started texting me that he refused to tattoo me further but also will not refund my deposit. The texts continued with physical threats. See screenshots. I tried to give him ideas to fix it but he refuses to continue. I got this tattoo about a year ago. I literally got off of work and impulsively went to get this done. They were super chill. I showed the guy that did my tattoo a picture of what I wanted and it's exactly the same. Me and my friend went in to get a matching king and queen tattoo. And my friends King is absolutely fucked. The "spade" just looks like a screwed up mushroom The crown is all sloppy. And the K is uneven. My Q crown is crooked and uneven. And the heart sitting underneath it is practically on top of the Q. It was just sloppy work all around. My sister had a really special moment getting an old, regrettable tattoo covered up by Mike Pinto. She was in a car accident 2 years ago and had her arm amputated in addition to crush injuries, broken bones and damaged organs. Long story- but the point is... can you imagine the loss of an arm, and seeing that every day with a tattoo there on your chest that you've never liked? What Mike came up with was a way to cover that tattoo, plus spread a gorgeous floral motif over the shoulder and down the arm to her prosthetic. It's beautiful, she feels beautiful, and during the times when she was scared or in pain, he talked her down and helped her walk through fears. I believe this client & artist match was meant to be, because he helped her in a way that's impossible to plan or replicate. I'm so impressed. read more

My 17 year old wonder dog Dexter crossed over the rainbow bridge on 9/20/17 and I always wanted to get his paw prints tattooed on my back. I came in a couple of days after he passed and Adam was the first tattoo artist I talked to. I really liked his work and showed him the paw prints. He took his time explaining his method and showing me his style. He understood how memorable I wanted this to be. After talking to 6 or 7 more tattoo shops and artists on Colfax, I chose Adam because of his art and his gentle personality. He did an amazing job of transferring his paw prints and I can't wait to show them off, even in the winter! He's personable, talented, reasonable rates (and by reasonable rates, I mean affordable for the work you get), and most importantly - sterile. They don't have an updated website, however their myspace is active and loaded with photos. The artists DO travel to tattoo conventions so if you cannot afford to fly out to Colorado then you can see them there. The myspace pages will give you their schedules. Is it possible to give no stars?? Not impressed AT ALL. These guys were not friendly, barely talked, and didn't ask me any questions about design or what I had in mind. I'm not a picky or difficult customer by any means. I understand that they are much more artistically inclined than I could ever be, so I like to give the artist freedom to take my idea and run with it. Which I am now regretting. I'm not sure if I just rubbed the guy the wrong way or what but I would have to say I am EXTREMELY disappointed with the outcome of this tattoo and the service. I wanted to get the serenity prayer on my thigh with clouds and beams of sun shining through. I made an appointment with Lorenzo Baca because after seeing his work online I was very impressed. He spent about 3hrs doing the line work and/or writing. Then due to the fact that it was late and the shop was closing we scheduled a second session to finish up the background. He said my deposit would be applied to my second session. 4 weeks passed and I was super excited about getting my tattoo finished, when he texts me to cancel my appointment. He said he would let me know when he could reschedule me for and....I never heard from him again. And they kept my deposit. So now....I'm going to have to find someone else to have mercy on me and help me get this thing finished or at least make it look like more than one big paragraph on my leg. Thanks for nothing. We came in, explained what we wanted, and within an hour or so, we walked out super happy with our new tattoos. Jeremy was our artist, and this guy is a total pro. Super friendly, chatted us up the whole time...just a really cool dude. He says he works out of Tower Classic Tattoo in St. Louis, so I'll definitely be visiting him again when he comes to my neck of the woods. All of my tattoos have been walk in when I get them, so I was happy to go a couple of months ago with my best friend to get another tattoo on my foot (third one on my feet). I took proper care, as I am aware how tattoos heal, and the tattoo is horrible. The ink bled under my skin and the tattoo artist didn't complete the tattoo and forgot a key piece on the tattoo. I showed the tattoo artist the picture I had pulled it up, a simple broomstick with a symbol on top, which wasn't tattooed properly, as he didn't tattoo the wand in the middle of the symbol. The picture I showed, as well as mentioned in person, was that I wanted the broomstick handle to not be filled in, which he did not do and followed my request, however due to the ink bleeding, it looks filled in. I am no stranger to tattoos and took proper care and the tattoo is so horrible that I am going to be paying to get it removed. Very disappointed. The ink bled so that the tattoo looks thick, when it shouldn't look thick as I specifically mentioned I wanted thin lines and referenced another tattoo on my foot. Lisa at the front desk is an actual graphic designer and help me design my tattoo to my standards with infinite patience while I waited for Scott to finish with his client. I've had 8 tattoos done at Thick As Thieves over the past 4 years or so and I couldn't be happier with the shop!! The most talented artists I've ever been around by far!!! The portrait Scott Ferguson did of a friend of mine that passed away looks more realistic than the picture he used to sketch it. The price is more than reasonable for the quality of work you receive and everyone that works there is great! They really have a passion and great talent for what they do and I know I'll continue coming back for more as long as their doors are open.
