Having a baby is already hard, but having a baby that needs help with feeding is something that no…read moreone can prepare you for. After a 6 week stay in the NICU, and a G-Tube placement, we started feeding therapy with Teresa through the Golden Gate Regional Center. During our time in the hospital and just after, we met with a number of feeding therapists that were next to no help with us. It was frustrating and sad, especially as new mom. When I met Teresa, I told her upfront that I was having a hard time and that I needed someone that could really help us get to a place where we could wean off our feeding tube. Nearly a year later, my daughter has been tube-free for almost five months, and has been mostly oral for about nine months. So much of our progress has been because of the help I got from Teresa. She has amazing patience, and really listens to what you're saying and offers useful and constructive ways to help. Nothing about it is forced, and along the way, there's also a gentleness in her approach to moving to the next steps. Of all our early intervention providers, Teresa is the one person I really wanted to meet with on a weekly basis because I knew there'd be constructive and helpful takeaways from our meetings. We recently had to relocate out of the state, and I am incredibly sad that I couldn't bring Teresa with us. Hopefully this means that Teresa can now help another family in the same way that she helped ours. Thank you Teresa and SF Speech!

We had an incredible experience working with Shelly Parks, or Teacher Shelly, as our 4 year-old…read morecalled her, for over a year (Sep 2024-Dec 2025). Shelly was instrumental in helping our son meaningfully improve his speech, and helping us realize there were other issues at play in his ear/ nose/ throat system - that were causing significant fluid retention and drainage problems, hearing loss, ear pain, poor sleep, irritability, and more, thus impacting his speech and behavior. Thanks to Shelly, we were able to figure all of this out, get our son the help he needed, and, a year later, we have a transformed kid. What made Shelly a great speech therapist for our son? Shelly is very observant, noticing fine details we did not (including the broader ENT issue I described earlier); she worked at our kid's level - really meeting him where he was, being flexible (he can be stubborn!) but also clear and firm to ensure progression. Shelly has a kind demeanor, accepting our son for who he is, making him feel welcomed so he felt supported to learn (there were days when he'd refuse to go to school b/c he didn't feel comfortable there but he was always thrilled to go see "Teacher Shelly"). She took a very methodical, thorough and collaborative approach with us - tracking his progression with regular speech samples and communicating suggestions for us to incorporate into our interactions with our son. And finally, she really cared about his well-being. There was a point when our son's speech, hearing and behavior issues were causing challenges for him at school. We were unsuccessful at convincing his preschool teacher that it wasn't just bad behavior but a host of other interrelated challenges we were working on with him. They had just decided he was a troublemaker. When I shared this with Shelly, she was concerned they were getting him so wrong. She talked to them and helped them change their perspective, take what we were saying seriously, and become much better partners in our son's development and growth as a result. Shelly is an incredible speech-language pathologist. I'd recommend her to anyone - and especially to parents of young kids struggling with their speaking comprehension and hearing. There isn't enough I can say. Thank you, Shelly, for everything.

Dani is also DIR-trained, which is evident in the way she approaches her work with a strong focus on connection, regulation, and developmentally appropriate support. My recent experiences elsewhere in the Bay Area were frustrating; for instance, while the audiologists at the Stanford Hearing Institute are competent, they don't seem to listen to their patients. In contrast, the audiologists at Sound Speech & Hearing Clinic are both knowledgeable and dedicated to following up on any issues. Melissa Beer is highly competent and friendly; she worked with me extensively to fine-tune my hearing aids over several sessions. An additional benefit is the pricing, which is much more affordable than the Stanford Hearing Institute for exactly the same hearing aids from Oticon. Even though I live forty miles away from San Francisco, the travel is well worth the effort.

The world of Speech Pathology has access to limited practical, clinical technology. However, when…read moreI first learned about Speech buddies Buddies, specifically designed tools for individual problem sounds that would be placed inside the mouth and teach the proper and consistent tongue placement that we all try to achieve, I was most intrigued. The method of almost instant intra-oral tactile feedback that has been created is effective and works impressively well. It has quickly become clear to me that Speech Buddies do a great job of teaching children how to place their to accomplish proper sound production. In addition, parents are impressed and supportive when I am able to recommend a technological option for their child that I think will speed up their learning process. It is most reassuring to them, and adds to my credibility in the early days of establishing a therapeutic relationship, that I have a variety of methods, both conventional and cutting-edge that I can use for their child. As for the kids, they always love gadgets, games and anything "techy" - especially something that they can actually touch which helps them and allows them to see rapid positive results. Speech Buddies provides effective tactile feedback where parents and children can rapidly hear and feel a difference. They motivate and encourage everyone involved in the Speech Pathology process, allowing for faster progress and easier carryover and generalization outside of the therapeutic environment. Speech Buddies are unique, effective tactile feedback tools that truly do what they are designed to accomplish. They help to correct problem sounds while encouraging and motivating in both a therapy and home setting. They work and are worthy of your interest. Donna Orloff

I'm so happy that finally a solution exists to accomplish this task in a much more effective, consistent and professional way. Speech Buddies also enable me to apply this method to a much larger set of sounds including the R sound, one of the trickiest to teach.

I was back to exercising regularly and playing volleyball in March. It wasn't until May that I found out I had a hairline fracture and bone bruising through MRI because I was still complaining about pain. I was told by the orthopedic doctors and a podiatrist that I needed surgery for my ankle, but I ultimately didn't want to do that. I didn't like any of the PTs that were in my area and in-network. I found Dr. Jay by chance--a simple yelp search and I found out he was walking distance from me. I dm'd him, back in December, my history and asked if surgery was the only way to go, and he responded pretty quickly that he's had the same injury and was able to get back into sports without going under the knife. After talking to Dr. Jay via zoom, I was convinced that he was gonna be the one to help me regain strength and mobility in my ankle. Dr. Jay is very knowledgeable, he'll breakdown the anatomy and physiology so you know what's happening with your body, and he'll teach you the right mechanics for the exercises. He also went over types of shoes I should be wearing during different types of exercises which is important because the shoes I wore were affecting my ankle and foot mobility. Dr. Jay doesn't just treat the symptom, he treats you as a whole because everything in the end is all connected. Dr. Jay will create workout routines that are suitable for you, and will tailor it based on your needs, such as what gym you go to/equipment you have. Send videos and updates on your workouts/daily activities so you can get his feedback, and he can tweak exercises/give you tips on what you can do in those exercises to reduce pain. One thing I needed to learn was that I didn't have the same capacity for load as I did pre-injury, and that I needed to not overdo it on exercises even though, mentally, I felt like I could do more. "When strain exceeds capacity, leads to negative adaptations. When strain stays right below capacity, positive adaptations. Learn through mistakes, and learn quickly on how to find the right amount." I'm very hard on myself, especially when training declined due to illness, holidays, vacations, and or pain (due to overloading/wearing too rigid shoes). Dr. Jay stayed positive and continued to encourage me. He reminded me that we are not perfect, and it is okay to take breaks. Dr. Jay's program gave me the structure, guidance, and motivation I needed to get back to running and jumping without fear. He's helped me gain the knowledge and confidence to get back on the court. Will definitely recommend Dr. Jay to anyone I know who's dealing with chronic pain and willing to put in the work!
