His bid was reasonable, but I found him difficult to trust for numerous reasons, causing me a lot of stress, necessitating my close oversight of his work, and making our many change orders difficult to negotiate. On multiple occasions Daniel misrepresented facts to me, including those related to a) his abilities, b) his material costs, c) availability of materials to meet my specifications. (Item B on that list was particularly glaring - where he tried to charge me $40/piece for heartwood redwood when he was using $11/piece plain old pine/fir! "Oops," he said "I must have misread the Home Depot website." As if an experienced contractor doesn't realize what a 2x4 should cost!?) I can acknowledge that many of our other issues arose from a dry rot issue he had not anticipated in preparing his bid, but it was him who elected not to go into the crawl space during his job walk, resulting in his bid failing to include this issue. Even after I forewarned him of the issue before work started, he elected not to inspect it. He acknowledged a lack of experience dealing with dry rot, but he later assured me that he'd address the problem as part of the job (unfortunately for me this was a verbal agreement, not one in writing). His failure to be forthright about his ability to address wood-destroying fungus meant that the necessary expertise was not brought in and therefore the problem was allowed to propagate and later re-infect portions of the work Daniel performed. On top of it all, much of his finishing work was shoddy at best. Gaps between the baseboards and floor, poorly textured wall paint around a new window (despite repeated request to correct the issue by me over multiple days and multiple failed attempts), a door that does not swing smoothly (again, despite me pointing it out and asking him to address it), a bathroom vanity that is not perfectly level, a window sill plate that was never smoothed so the rough/sharp edge from the manufacturing is glaringly obvious. I was hesitant to post this review because Daniel did claim he would warranty his work. Though I appreciate him coming back out to have a look at the issues he created, this has done me little good in the long run, as his "warranty" has summed about 2-3 hours of labor and did nothing to permanently correct the issues identified.

In fact, I've already recommended him to a few friends. They renovated two bathrooms for us, and they both look stunning. We were particularly impressed with the quality and service for the cost, and would give him very high marks for value. We could tell when Daniel first came to bid the projects that he was very detail oriented (he was the only one of four that took notes and gave us an itemized bid), and that proved to be both true and helpful. He and his team made sure things were perfect before they were done. Small things came up of course (different batches of grout were slightly different colors, our tiles were too irregular in length to do the tile pattern we wanted and there was some miscommunication around this) but they worked with us to get everything as close to perfect as possible. His brother Andrei lays the tile and his work is really gorgeous. Daniel's also just a really nice guy and a particularly good communicator, getting back to us with answers to questions right away and troubleshooting issues that came up. For example, our stone fabricator cut the back edge of the stone too close to the sink, making it quite difficult to install the faucet, but Daniel found a way to make it work and had a good attitude about it. He and his team were also incredibly considerate in the amount of noise they made, making sure they waited until our baby was awake before doing the really loud stuff. One thing to be prepared for in working with Daniel (rather than a designer/builder team) is that you have take on the project design and materials sourcing yourself. For us this included some complex tile math and finding our own stone fabricator, though he did introduce us to excellent custom cabinet maker (https://millenswoodworking.com/) and shower glass company who we were very happy with. We probably could have used a bit more help knowing when we needed each component to be ready (sometimes they were stalled waiting on pieces), but he and his team were really patient with the delays. They were also very respectful of our time, and overall had wonderful customer service. Would absolutely use Daniel again for projects and wholeheartedly recommend him!

I fired Matt G. (Cal Pro Contractors) and his team after they screwed up 2 of the showers that they…read moredid for us. I hired a different contractor to fix and finish the 2nd shower and do the 3rd shower. Matt and his team ended up costing me more money and a much longer timeline to finish remodeling 3 showers in the end. Here's why: 1) Matt, the project manager was not around to supervise his team's work. Matt went on vacation for the first few days of work. His team was not briefed on the work that needed to be done. I had to go over the project with his team and buy materials like the shower niche that Matt was supposed to provide. Later, I learned very quickly that Matt didn't do any of the hands-on work. His team did all the work. He was supposed to supervise the work to make sure it was done correctly and help resolve any problems that might come up. He turned out to be more of a ghost project manager. He would appear and disappear at our house after a quick look at the shower work. Didn't let me know when he was coming or going. 2) Subcontractors: Matt uses subcontractors. They are always in a hurry to do the job so they can move on to the next job quickly. They don't take time to do quality work. 3) Does not guarantee quality work: When things go wrong, they don't want to fix it to make sure things are properly done. 4) Poor customer service: Matt does not want to hear when things are going wrong and when problems are brought up to him, he gets angry and does not address and appease the customer's concerns. He leaves trash and shower debris next to house all during the project rather than clean up mess each week. 5) Excuses rather than solutions: Matt had more excuses than solutions in dealing with the poor quality work that his team did. 6) They wasted too much tile. I had to order more boxes of tile. I found good tiles in the trash bin that could have been used in other parts of the shower. 7) Some of their tiling work was bad and not in alignment (see photos). 8) Niche installed was not centered correctly. Matt told us we wouldn't notice it once it was tiled. 9) Shower cartridge was installed incorrectly. They had to remove the newly installed tile and HardieBacker wallboard to get to the shower cartridge. They did not read the instructions and placed the cartridge too far forward and cut the valve stems to close. They had to order new stems which delayed the shower's completion. 10) One of the showers did not drain properly. The bigger upstairs shower (29 X 58 inch floor) proved to be an even bigger nightmare. A 3 X 2-foot puddle of water remained at the bottom of the shower floor after a water test was done (see photos). Matt said, not to worry, that puddling would be fixed when they tiled the floor. Well, tiling the floor didn't fix the problem. The 3 X 2 foot puddle showed up again after we ran the shower. The puddle would take about 2 days to evaporate and be absorbed into the grouted floor. I pointed out this glaring problem to Matt when he eventually inspected the shower in person. He told me that puddling of water on a shower floor was not unusual and that this puddle met industry acceptable standards (he said that a lot about his other sloppy work). I pointed out that didn't sound right, that the floor could be damaged by standing water and it could be a slipping hazard. He looked me straight in the eyes and said with a straight face, that I COULD USE A SQUEEGEE TO REMOVE THE PUDDLE OF WATER. I thought he was kidding. From my research, there should never be a left-over shower puddle. The shower floor should fully drain within 15 minutes or less. After consulting with other tile and shower experts, I told Matt that the floor would have to be demolished, fixed and retiled. Matt's professional response, "You don't expect me to pay for this repair?" If Matt was a good businessman and stood by his work, he would have guaranteed his team's work and absorb all the costs for his team's screw ups. But he didn't, so I offered to pay for the extra tiles if his guys redo the cement floor. They tried again and messed up the shower floor a second time. I got more excuses from Matt, so I ended up firing him and his team. Eventually, thankfully, a family member visiting from another country for the holidays who is a professional tiler fixed the floor. No puddles and no need for a squeegee! Otherwise, we were quoted $4-6K by other contractors to fix it. If that had happened, we would have taken Matt to court. My rating of 1 is very generous considering all the problems, excuses, stress, extra costs and time this project cost us. Matt and his team should stay away from doing shower remodels because they do a very poor job. I wish I had hired an outside inspector to review Matt's work and let me know if they were doing things wrong. It's a hard lesson to learn. We did eventually have the third shower redone by another contractor. The shower came out great with no excuses or added costs...or a squeegee.

Out of the companies that responded through Yelp, he came across as one of the most professional and serious about understanding the project rather than simply giving a quick estimate. He replied quickly to my questions through Yelp and was able to come out in a very reasonable timeframe to evaluate the work and discuss ideas in person. We hired Moe and the Optivest Build team for a decorative pergola/faux balcony repair and replacement project involving redwood, exterior trim work, stucco work, door jamb and casing repairs, sealing, and painting. The contract process was straightforward and I appreciated the flexibility and payment structure based on project milestones rather than everything being front-loaded. After Moe's initial site visit and evaluation, it became clear that a more comprehensive rebuild approach for most of the structure made more sense than piecemeal repairs. Moe explained the long-term benefit of rebuilding the deteriorated portions together rather than replacing isolated components now and potentially dealing with additional mobilization and repair costs again a few years later. I appreciated that he was not simply replacing wood, but also improving areas where the original design appeared to contribute to moisture issues.
