Pampa, you have a treasure and you may not even know it…read more Walking in the doors is like walking through time and the doors of my childhood. I grew up in Los Angeles in a mostly Mexican family. I'm super picky about Mexican food, and it's so hard to find house made, classical panaderia, but you can smell all the delicious smells of fresh pastry from the street, and a quick perusal of the cases reveals expertly prepared treats, sweet and flaky or tender as expertise demands. If we were here longer I would have raided the shelves, because it's probably been 30 years since I've seen items that looked this good. And I've been looking. Dear Lord, have I been looking. Mainly we were here for dinner and we barely made it in time so I didn't want to linger too long after what must have been a busy weekend day. My son got the nachos, which were incredible. They fry their own tortilla chips, and they were light and crispy and tasty. The toppings were perfect, and the pico was just as fresh as you would hope. I had the carnitas plate. The carnitas are perfect, something I miss now that I live in Denver where they think carnitas means chile verde, which is just sad. Carnitas is not a stew. These are meltingly tender and yet perfectly crispy on the outside. Their salsa verde is beautiful and balanced and the perfect accompaniment for the carnitas. Their retried beans are delicious as is the rice. I couldn't pass up the elote (in a cup, not on the cob, in L.A. we call it esquites, all the same flavors but easier to eat than on the cob) which was absolutely amazing, and tasted just like home. We did get dessert, tres leches and flan, both of which are wonderful. One other thing I regret not being able to try was the aguas frescas, they looked absolutely amazing, so if you are here, give them a try, I suspect they are every bit as authentic as everything else. Authentic and artisan quality. There is something here for everyone, so give it a try. On your way in, grab a tray and some tongs and grab some beautiful pastries to take home with you, and remember to get an agua fresco (or champurrado if they have it). If it's a weekend get some caldo de res, basically the best beef soup you'll ever eat. This stuff is so labor intensive, especially food of this quality, and its more affordable than you can believe. Make sure you have cash for a tip, I couldn't figure out how to tip with my credit card. Whatever you do, come in now. You'll love everything.

We stopped at Mejia's Bakery while passing through town looking for a quick lunch. At first glance,…read morethe place almost looked closed--it's very unassuming from the outside and located in an older strip-style row of storefronts that gives off a bit of an old-west small-town vibe. Don't let that fool you though; once you step inside it's clear this is a very authentic Mexican spot. The interior is long and narrow. On the right side when you walk in there are bakery cases filled with a wide variety of traditional Mexican pastries and baked goods. On the left there's some seating and an ice cream area, and further toward the back there's a larger seating section that looks like it's used for their buffet (which we were told they offer on weekends). We visited on a Wednesday, so we ordered from the counter instead. The people working there were very friendly and welcoming, and the prices were very reasonable. I ended up ordering a cheese quesadilla with fries. The fries were actually excellent--crispy, salty, and exactly what you'd hope for. The quesadilla itself was okay. In fairness, this is clearly a place that specializes in more traditional Mexican dishes, and I probably didn't order the thing they're best known for. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food and pastries, this seems like a great local spot and it's definitely worth checking out. If your taste leans more toward American-style Mexican food, you might find the menu a little different than what you're used to. Overall, a friendly local bakery and restaurant with very fair prices and a lot of traditional options.

Probably a mixture of not too many options in the area and that they are good. Once seated they bring complimentary chips and salsa. I must say those chips are like crack. Very good. I also ordered some guacamole which was also very good. The first night I had the Mexican steak as recommended by the waiter which was excellent. Huge portion so I had to take half of it to go. The second night I had Tacos Locos, again a recommendation by the waiter. Again very good! Overall everything I had was well above the average Mexican restaurant. The one thing I would not recommend getting here are the salads. They seemed pretty weak. All iceberg lettuce and a bunch a shredded cheese on top. But then again who goes to a Mexican joint for a salad!

It felt very welcoming and the staff was very friendly. I ordered the chilaquiles plate with two eggs. The entire plate was very cheesy and spicy so if you are not a fan of spicy food, you may want to let the waiter know. The potatoes were not as crispy as I had hoped for but still very good. The eggs were cooked almost to perfection of how I eat them. I am not a big fan of the restroom being in the middle of the restaurant with the sink sorta just out in the open as well. Those are just minor things as this place is very good and I hope it sticks around until my next visit.

Since moving to Pampa, I have been looking for a real burger. Today I found one…read more I was driving around town and passed Jay's Drive-In. I have passed it before. Today I thought, "I am gonna try this place." I am very happy I did. Jay's has been in business since 1943. It's not flashy, no catchy jingles or signs. There are no order kiosks. In reality, it should be called a Drive-up. So, I drive-up, park and on the side of the building is the menu. There were burgers (which I obviously ordered). There were ham sandwiches, catfish sandwiches, pretty much an eclectic collection of foods. I ordered the Homestyle burger. It was fabulous. Instead of the normal pre made, or flash frozen burger, this was real beef, a whole half-pound patty made the way Mom makes them. It was juicy, salted perfectly, and actually tasted the way a beef patty should taste. "Homestyle" comes with actual fresh lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles. It was perfect. I also ordered the cheese fries. They were soooo good. After eating burgers all over Pampa, I finally found the real deal at a little gray building on the corner of Hobart and the Borger highway. The burger itself was $5.75, and well worth the price, however I did not pay for it. Some very kind lady pid for my food. I don't know why. She just did. So I decided to keep it going at this little, unassuming burger joint. I plan on trying other food here as well, but if you are in the mood for a good ol' homestyle burger, you will find it at Jay's
