Omg!!! I am so happy that I stumbled upon this place. It's located downtown so parking can be tricky. This spot is filled with indoor plants. There are a lot of variety! I had lots of questions and she answered every question! I'll be back soon

My friend and I went to support a local business when we were doing our plant shopping. We've heard such great things about zen. The associate in the store was amazing and did a great job with helping us pick out the plants that were a good fit for us. The team also did a really good job at making sure everyone was practicing social distancing while shopping. I love the wide variety of pots you can get with your plant. It was really sweet of them to put the plants in the pot for us! If anybody is looking or their first plant and want someone to assist them on understanding how to take care of it then go to Zen!!

Temporary space as of early Sept. 2019

Sept. 2019 - this store is in a temporary space upstairs but will be moving downstairs between The Parlour and Jeddah's Tea soon. The owner is pleasant and knowledgeable and will help you with questions (or look it up for you if she doesn't know). The space is relatively small so the selection isn't huge but there's enough for someone who wants a plant or who wants to customize a small terrarium. If you want to support a local business rather than a big box, this is the place for succulents.

Super cute and zen shop in downtown durham selling mostly plants and plant related products, but also other household and decor items like candles, diffusers, and wall art. Good place to go to buy gifts. I attended their succulent terrarium workshop, and I truly felt like I learned so much about succulents and terrariums. Megan, the owner, is knowledgeable and passionate about plants and terrariums, and I left with a beautiful terrarium that I designed as well as the confidence that I could keep it alive.

Visiting this shop for the first time sent me into a state of awe. The space is beautifully organized and offers items from air plants to macrame hangers and dangling Pothos to artsy ceramic planters. Adela answered my "fifty-leven" questions and reported three plants for me. The shop was out of Snake plants at the time, but Adela was able to offer alternatives for easy-going and equally gorgeous plants. I was just gifted a Snake plant by a friend, and I cannot wait to revisit The Zen Succulent to pick out another pot for it. Thank you to Adela for all her help, and Megan for offering this space!

I wandered in here one day when I was just walking around downtown Durham. The woman behind the counter was immediately helpful without making me feel watched, she was just happily chatting away with me while I looked around and she sorted moss. The whole store is beautiful and is a succulent lovers dream - they have so many types and even have tiny moss balls! Their DIY bar was perfect as well for anyone trying to make a terrarium exactly to their likes. I told her that I can never keep any plants alive ever and she helped me figure out which I should get and even let me know that if I was having trouble with it I could come back in for advice. I better watch myself though because before I know it I might a plant mom to a zillion baby plants!

Really cute store in the middle of Durham. It's connected to the crystals store. As you'd expect, there's a wide range of small plants and succulents to choose from, but there are also cards, beautiful jewelery and other small gifts to check out. While speaking to the woman running the store that day she mentioned that there will be a Raleigh store shortly! I'm super excited about that.

This shop just gave me life!! I was looking for an event to do fir my sister's birthday celebration and found the terrarium creation services if Megan and Zen Succulents. Wonderful experience, knowledgeable, and fun. Highly recommend! Will definitely be back!

I love, love The Zen Succulent. It's a tiny shop that provides an enormous amount of good energy with a great selection of succulents, plants, planters and containers, and beautifully crafted terrariums. Every time I visit, I want to take everything home! Megan is amazing and her smile is so infectious. I'm also envious of the gorgeous Rachel Campbell painting. The Zen Succulent has wonderful gift ideas for almost any occasion. I also love that they sell other local artists' products. I think I spotted some Lauren Sumner pottery at one visit. They also offer workshops on terrarium building, calligraphy, photography, macrame hanging planters, and spoon carving. Staff is always so knowledgeable and friendly.

The Zen Succulent is a new business located past Bull City Burger on Parrish St. It is a beautiful, light airy space filled with succulents, air plants, terrarium making supplies, and pre-made terrariums. The staff are friendly and helpful. The only slight negative is they clearly focus more on their pre-made terrariums and their stock of air plants is fairly limited. I went in to shop for a replacement air plant after my previous one passed (RIP little guy). Sadly, they only had a few types to choose from and they were all a bit plain considering my previous air plant had so much character and colour. That said, their pre-made terrariums are beautiful and will lend a zen to any home. Go check out The Zen Succulent, you'll probably find something that you like and if not, try making your own! Perfect for adding a bit of lively and lovely decor to any home.

Brightleaf Square is a quaint retail development located in the center of the Brightleaf…read moreneighborhood in downtown Durham. I'd call it a "shopping center," but it's not like a typical suburban shopping center. The development consists of two repurposed brick warehouses, originally built in 1904, that used to store bright leaf tobacco (that's where the name comes from). So, Brightleaf Square looks and feels historic, and that's what makes it charming. That said, the development is kind of small and there's not that much here. If you want to walk across the street to, say, Rose's or Jeni's, then yes, the neighborhood (also known as the Brightleaf District) has more to offer. I highly recommend Rose's, by the way, for their ramen and ice cream sandwiches. Strictly speaking, within the square, Emmy Squared Pizza is terrific for their Detroit-style pizza. It's among the best deep-dish pizza anywhere, in my opinion. There's also Clouds Brewing, which is a craft brewery and restaurant. Other businesses are local/boutique shops, such as Bull City Art & Frame Company and Mill & Meadow Stationery Shop, and private offices. The brick/stone walkway, old-fashioned lamp posts, string lights, trees, benches, and early-1900s buildings can make for a fun, whimsical stroll with friends and family before or after lunch or dinner. It's also a good date spot, especially if you incorporate the larger neighborhood (e.g., pizza at Emmy Squared followed by ice cream sandwiches at Rose's). For parking, I suggest parking in the surface lot at the corner of W Main St and S Gregson St. You can enter the lot from either of those streets. Pay attention to signs as you may have to pay during certain days and times. Fun fact: Durham's infamous "Can Opener Bridge" is located on the south end of Brightleaf Square. If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out the bridge's Wikipedia page here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norfolk_Southern%E2%80%93Gregson_Street_Overpass Also, watch some of the videos on this YouTube channel to see the Can Opener in action: https://www.youtube.com/@11foot8plus8 The camera that captures those videos is mounted on one of the buildings at Brightleaf Square.

Brightleaf Square looks like it'd be cute and fun to walk around in, but that's really all it is…read more Pretty market lights and small shops but nothing actually to do..? Hopefully they add better restaurants and more variety of boutiques here because the square is not living up to its potential. Basically, I'd skip this and head over to ATC.
