Was looking for help with a Kirsch drapery rod and remembered The Yardstick back from the days that it was on Bascom. Was happy to discover they were still around so I went to the shop. Sean was wonderful and a big help. He took a look at my situation and showed me that I just needed a better understanding of how the rod was supposed to worked and ended up not needing to replace or restring the rod. We had motorized drapes & shades installed 6 years ago and that work was great. But even better is that I recently broke the cable for recharging one of the blinds battery (my fault). Despite the blinds being well out of factory warranty Sean had me send him some pics, identified the part I needed, and gave me the part for free along with instructions for installing it. After trying to work with a national store for new window coverings, I discovered that The Yardstick was still active. I remembered them from my childhood in the South Bay. I was able to find a fabric that I liked in the styles I wanted to cover two sets of windows in my main living area. I'm really happy with the end result. The ways it was different from my dealings with the other place were these. I wasn't able to get fabric swatches. I needed to borrow the books with the samples within them, which worked out fine. I was not able to get a rendering of what the window coverings would look like in my space - fabric, type of drape, placement on the wall, etc. This made me ask a lot of questions and I may have come off as very needy, but this was a bigger investment in my home and I wanted to get it right. There was a small issue with the installation which they took care of. Their pricing seemed to be very much in line with the other guys, so no complaints there. The decision to go with The Yardstick was a good one and I am very happy with the results. read more

Jack was extremely quick in coming to visit for an in-home quote. He was the best in price of the three places I contacted and most importantly, honest. Didn't feel like he was pushing me. He estimated 8 weeks for the install to happen, and he was right on time and sent two guys to install as soon as our material got in. The two guys were professional and quick. I love Hunter Douglas products in another area and wanted to use them again here in the Bay area. Where other vendors had been unreliable, Jack and his team at The Yardstick were excellent. Many of the custom draperies in our house came from Yardstick back in the 1970s -1990s. They were my mother's go-to shop for window coverings. Also, it was her favorite fabric store back in the day. I remember spending countless hours browsing through the pattern books for my next year's school wardrobe. Fast forward many years, to 2022. The house is mine now. The last time the window treatments were changed was in the '90s when mom put in white shutters. It was time for a refresh. I stared looking for a window covering company, but the search stopped when I saw that The Yardstick was still around. I called and scheduled an appt with Jack. He came out with a bunch of displays and samples. I didn't know what I wanted, other than just wanting some sort of shades on some of my windows. Jack asked me what my goals were, such as privacy, diffused light, etc., and based on that he showed me what he thought would be best for each window. I was overwhelmed when it came to picking out colors and fabrics, but Jack's suggestions were spot on. I ended up with all Hunter Douglas. I got banded shades in my living room and dining room. I love being able to open them all the way or just open them enough to overlap the bands and let in diffused light, while offering a little privacy. In the kitchen we went with roller blinds because I have a monster house behind me that looks straight down into my kitchen. In my office we went with a pleated shade with the top-down feature because I get afternoon sun and it allows me to block the sun as it travels west without compromising my view too much. I added the motor to all of the shades that I can't reach. Best thing ever! I also got the wifi hub for the motors, so I can open and close them from my smart phone. I just used it yesterday when I left the house at night and realized I had left the blinds open. I was able to close them from my car via my cell phone. Customer service is top-notch and installation was great. I had some tricky situations with where my shades were going, but Mark and Sean figured it out. They had tricks up their sleeves for each obstacle. They installed everything, cleaned up and gave me a lesson on how everything works. My house is so bright and cheery now. I can't give a review to adequately describe the quality and service I received from Jack and Sandra at the Yardstick. Sandra showed me how the Hunter Douglas duette shades work at their well appointed studio and described the advantages of the choices well, then let me take my time going through samples to find just the right color and material. Our main goal was to keep heat out during hot days which the shades and drapes do very well. Jack came to the house to check the measurements I'd taken so we ordered everything perfectly and gave me some further thoughts based on his impressions of the window spaces in person. This was all very helpful in making choices we'd love throughout the coming years. Amazing window treatments can be pricey but Jack helped me make the wisest choices so I ended up with top down bottom up shades on my higher windows and just bottom up on the bottom behind a large couch. They are really extraordinary and my husband and I are extremely pleased with them. Our drapes were a less complicated choice of color and pattern and we love them too. Thanks Jack and Sandra! Installation happened about dix weeks later and was efficient and illuminating as the installers showed us how to operate the blinds. The owner Jack came back with a replacement after several trips trying to fix the window vertical blinds I complained in my previous post. Jack is a great guy to work with. Although the replacement is not totally satisfactory to us, it seems slightly better than the previous one. I believe Hunter Douglas is too big to pay attention to their design details. I have had Hunter Douglas window treatments and after 20 years I needed to replace them. They are great and they stand behind their warranty. The Yardstick is an authorized representative and they were easy to work with and reflect Hunter Douglas' high standards. Since I knew what I wanted, selecting and ordering was easy. Sean, the installer was both professional and friendly. He called to confirm the appointment before he arrived, was efficient taking down the old treatments and putting up the new ones. One of the treatments was a new version which uses a remote instead manually operated. Sean helped me sign up on Hunter Douglas' site to set up the remote. I had always heard good things about The Yardstick, so I decided to call them when I needed new draperies in my formal dining room. The custom installation was done by Mark and Sean, who were fantastic as well. They were highly meticulous, knowledgeable, and professional -- and as an added plus, they each have a great sense of humor. They worked hard to ensure that the curtain installation was picture-perfect (and also left the room in pristine condition at the end of the day). Motorized shades are far more complex to install than I realized in 2013 when my system of 29 recessed somfy - powered shades was inadequately installed by another company (National Blinds of SF). THANK HEAVENS FOR THE YARDSTICK -- they are saving my system ! They know the best way to install motorized shades so that repairs are easiest and last expensive. In fact, they are so confident in their workmanship that if a repair is needed after the somfy warranty period, Yardstick will charge only for replacement parts, and not labor. I wish I had found the Yardstick 10 years ago. Now, however, with their help, I am prepared for motor failures (2 so far) down the road as the NB system ages. Moreover Yardstick prices are very fair (I checked around the bay area), and their know-how is excellent. read more

I had 7 window treatments installed yesterday and am very happy with the fresh appearance they give to our old house. The owner Jack streamlined the decision making process for this mix of Hunter Douglas verticals and Alta faux wood vinyl blinds so that the colors blend perfectly. Ace installer Mark and Sean showed me how to use the unfamiliar cords for different open/close options. The only thing I don't like is that I have to use two hands on the cord to twist open the lovely luminettes. They were also expensive but I'm satisfied with money well spent. read more
