KNOW YOUR NIGHT! A lot of people give this place flack for being too crowded and having a cover. That could be a fair knock... until you factor in that this bar is open and lively other nights than the usual Friday & Saturday! Sundays are my personal favorite because there's no cover and always live music or DJs. The food from Landhaus is my favorite hangover cure in Brooklyn at the moment. The new Brooklyn hotspot is a crowded singles cesspool. Don't go here on a weekend and expect to get a drink quickly. It's a good after-work spot, and the outdoor patio is spacious if there isn't a lot of people around. The taco truck is delicious and cheap, so if you want a place to eat dinner cheap and have a drink, it's good for that. Friends of mine have had two terrible experiences, which have led to my bad rating. First, a friend had been buying drinks for several hours, and tipping consistently. After buying a beer without tipping, the bartenders all ganged up on him and accused him of not tipping on any of his drinks. Having been there with him, I knew they were wrong. They refused to serve him after that. The second incident happened when a friend of mine was standing next to someone that threw a beer can over his shoulder. The bouncer grabbed my friend and accused him of throwing it, and proceeded to physically throw him out of the bar without giving him a chance to explain himself. The mexican food stand out back is FIVE STARS. However, besides it being an unholy clusterfuck on the weekends, they do not offer any kind of happy hour specials without food involved. I like that this place doesn't make me feel claustrophobic like some other williamsburg bars, because it's not just a hallway with a bar in it, you actually have some room to move. This place is okay overall. The bartenders are pretty and really nice, drinks are decently priced, mixed crowd, there's a dance floor, and an outdoor bar/seating area in the back serving yummy food. Get the patty melt, seriously. There's a cover charge after midnight or 10pm sometimes, $5-10. When the dj is playing hiphop it's lit! Yet other times on a Saturday they're playing Mumford and Sons all night or w.e it is you transplants listen to. And that's when I'll take my patty melt to-go. read more

OK ok... the giant blackboard of impressively reasonable prices gave us a good feeling going into this. The fact that you can upgrade any of their beer-shot combos or mixed drinks to premium booze for only a buck is nice too. I got the immense joy of introducing my whiskey-obsessed friend to the joy of pickle back shots (is this a BK think? or a new thing? either way, I'm down), it was time to hit the taco truck. This Woods is Union Pool circa 2007... crowded with a lot of people that don't live in the neighborhood who come out to dance and eat tacos on the patio of a 'hip' bar in wburg. There always seem to be plenty of singles -- most folks are eying each other and on the prowl. The drinks are mid-priced and the music is decent. It's not a particularly unique scene, or maybe it is for being strangely Manhattan-cum-Brooklyn. Definitely not bad -- I've had fun here-- but not worth walking a mile for (its about as far from the subway as you can get). read more

I'm so surprised to see the 3.5 star average. I reallyyy liked this place when I went! The funny thing is, I arrived on a Thursday night at like 1am and it was DEAD. Straight up no one on the dance floor. So you may be wondering why I still loved it so much. Welppppp, you should know by now that I judge every single bar/lounge/club that I go to by the music they play. And this spot played the jaaams. Good old school hip hop and r&b which is right up my music alley. The kicker: the DJ was spinning OUTSTANDING by the gap band as we left. Whaaaat? That is one of my top 10 songs in life. Truly 'meh, I've experienced better'. Trekked in the snow because a gf suggested dancing and heard this place was great. Welp, it was far from GREAT dancing. While the music they were playing was fun and definitely dance worthy, the place was so overpacked with sweaty trust funders in flannel that we lasted for maybe 15 minutes? We finally maneuvered our way to a back corner and tried dancing a bit, but overall decided it wasn't worth it. I would say the high point of the evening was realizing that both J and I know 100% of the words to Ludacris' timeless classic, Fantasy - that, and the massive outdoor patio, which will become even more clutch as the nights warm up, allowing the requisite leather jacket and/or lady blazer to be left a su casa. Unsure abt the vibe of the weekends, but on Wednesday nights everyone seems to roll w/ their designated crews - which, as an outsider makes for delicious people watching - but if I was flying solo it would be intimidating as efffff - nevertheless, if you're just looking to get some strange, it's quite easy if you have some flavor of game or are in the line of sight of one of the many tipsy gals that makes eyes at you from beneath their artfully flat brimmed hats. Cocktails are surprisingly dec - I sampled something w lemon and bourbon and maybe iced tea and didn't hate it - had I had my head in the game to get trashed, it would have be easy to do so and relatively inexpensive (maybe $10-12ish/drink, $6ish for beer, $5ish for shots). Didn't hit the food, though a pair I was chatting w housed the Asian ribs and were thrilled - also on the menu is standard drunk fare - hush puppies, burgers, bacon on a stick....). Overall, not a bad place to dance and watch the tribes of Brooklyn 'beauxs convene - perhaps a less great place to meet a mate, though perhaps I underestimate the validity of finding love whilst bouncing around to Missy and T-Pain. read more

The couple times I've been here, I wanted to have the time of my life, just like the rest of my friends keep telling me about. I have yet to experience that. The first time I came here, I tried the tacos. They were OUT OF THIS WORLD good. I love the chorizo and beef ones! Let me start by saying I think I may actually have pulled a pelvic muscle from doing the twist and mashed potato. Visiting from LA, my man and I had started the night off with an 8-course meal at Fatty Cue's (another spot which I highly recommend). Following more whisky and pickle shots than I can remember (don't judge), we hastened off in a dark Lincoln and arrived at The Woods. Here is where the night when awesomely awry. The place was popping and the music was dope. I was digging the old school tunes (Chuck Berry, James Brown) and was surprised to learn I could recite all the words to Splish Splash at the top of my lungs. It was a 60's mod/rock extravaganza, complete with a bevy of your peers - not your parents - doing the twist and guzzling cheap cocktails. All in all, it was an awesome night with great ambiance and music, and a rad outdoor vibe reminiscent of the Verdugo Bar here in LA. Good times were had by all. So much so that I had to check my wallet the following morning to (A) see if my credit card and ID were still there and (B) see if I had actually spent any money. Yep. I had. This place is okay. I went on a Friday night about 11pm and the music for the most part 80's. It was nice to hear those song but I was expecting more Rap and R&B music and the DJ didn't play that (well not much while I was there). The DJ did play some nice club/house. The crowd had a lot of nice looking ladies and the drinks were between 7-9 bucks for vodka and cranny with tip. This place would have been 5 stars except for two things... The bartender spilt my pickelback shot on me, before I could even take my shot. Though he did replace it, I smelt like the terrible combo all night!! I loved the feel of the bar, kind of grungy and divey, just how I love my bars. Love this place! Indoor/ outdoor option is dope. The food is amazing. Make sure you go there hungry! The portion sizes are great. It should be called The Sticks, because that aptly describes its location in Billyburg. The place is huge, with plenty of standing room to work your erratic hipster dance moves, a long bar to get that cheap-ass canned beer (and shot if you so desire), and awkward seating along the wall. There's also a large outdoor area, yes, with a taco cart. The music was at least tasteful, not stuff you'd normally hear at a bar, but they must be cool like that, but way too loud for the number of people there. Yes, I must be getting old. Not particularly my scene, I had a good time here and could see having a good time there in the future. There's plenty of beard, flannel, fur, or black that, when meeting your friends, perhaps describe yourself or dress differently (read: normal). read more

Maybe it was just my experience, but I didn't like this place at all when I went. Lame music, although the crowd was nice. Bouncers light a flashlight on you if you even attempt for a second to stand or sit on top of the long chair/couch/thing/whatever-you-call-that in the back. I mean, one of my friends is 6'3'' and they kept flashing him because they thought he was standing there or something. What the hell do they want the guy to do? He IS that tall, he was standing on the ground. Anyway, I'm sure there is some sort of point to not letting people do that. But I don't see it, and it's annoying. I liked the crowd at The Woods, but other than that, I can't really think of too many reasons to come here. It's basically a big rectangle with a patio in the back; no catchy design elements that stand out in my mind. The dance floor, if that's what you want to call it (really more of a dance stage), is tiny and not conducive to dancing at all. The drinks were standard bar selections, no fancy mixologists. Make of that what you will. Everyone seemed to come in groups and the place was absolutely packed. And I don't mean that in a good way. On the one hand, it's cool that they don't make everyone stand in line outside. On the other hand, they're letting in waaaay too many people at once and it makes things uncomfortable for everyone inside. Since it's not a pickup spot, not a dance spot and not even a mellow chill-out spot, I can't really think of too many reasons to come to The Woods. I went here for a Halloween party. The bartenders were really nice and attentive, even though the venue itself was really crowded. I wasn't really feeling the band that performed but I don't think that took too much from the experience. This place is definitely a hipster scene. One thing that makes this place absolutely amazing is their taco and burrito stand in the back. You would have no idea this existed unless you ventured towards the back or noticed people eating food. The burrito was probably one of the best burritos I have eaten in NYC, believe it or not. Chicken was super fresh, as were the vegetables and they wrapped the burrito so it wouldn't spill all over you if you had to stand and eat. I tried getting a taco but the line was too long. I went on Wednesday for a 10-11 open bar, expecting the worst since I've had bad experiences with open bars other places. Nope! The bartenders didn't even expect a tip -- "no, no, it's on the house," they'd say. Drinks were reasonably priced regardless of your taste. I was here last night and the DJ was awful! There was a male DJ with glasses and a female DJ. When the male DJ took a break, I thought the female would be better. It was way worse!!! I approached them to put something more upbeat on like hip hop, but they said that they don't have it in their playlist. I must say without good music, I can't dance or truly enjoy myself even after a few drinks. The bathroom is filthy!! It is unisex with 5 stalls. The floor is completely wet and covered in urine.The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars is because the staff was friendly and the drinks were cheap! A glass of red wine is $6, beer is $4, and a shot of patron is $7. Tips: 1.There's a $20 minimum if you use your credit card to purchase drinks. 2.NO cover all night. 3. The Woods gets a lot of love and some hate depending on who you ask, but I've always had a great time and I think the critique is a bit harsh. Granted, it is a very different bar depending on when you go. Come late night and its a decent Brooklyn "club" where you can get your dance on. Its dark, sweaty, and depending on the DJ, you can get your pop/hiphop/trance fix. Bathroom line for ladies is long, but moves quickly. Come earlier and have a more relaxing time - you can sit outside on the spacious backyard and enjoy the outdoors with some drinks and tacos from the their taco truck. There's some drinks specials and picklebacks - definitely cheaper than other dance clubs/ bars. They might consider hiring an extra bartender or two on the weekends, but otherwise, choose what kind of bar you want the Woods to be and go at that time. read more

I go here all the time, and this is the first time I have experienced this HORRIBLE customer service! I ordered a Long Island ice tea, and the bartender told me they don't make those, I asked why not and his reply was because it's trashy drink so he isn't making it for me! AS A PAYING CUSTOMER, he could have KINDLY declined my order and say sorry that drink is not on our menu. When I was exiting the bar I told him he has horrible customer service and he laughed and said ok enjoy that last word. Some customer service, and respect for people to begin with! Came here kind of early around 10 so it was sort of empty. Service was decent. Music was kind of wack. As it got later the quality of the music improved. However, after leaving my brother realized he left his card at the bar so he went to the bouncers and told them and they had the audacity to tell him he had to pay $5 to go back in!!!! I went to The Woods for the first time two weeks ago on a Tuesday for Karaoke night. I heard that the red subaru guy hosted the karaoke night and quite honestly if anyone should be hosting a karaoke night, it's the red subaru guy (http://gothamist.com/2009/10/26/video_riding_with_the_oldies-singin.php). We had an absolute blast for my brother's birthday... and loved that the place appeared to be dog friendly... there were two in the audience hanging out like the rest of us. I went back the next Friday because I had heard a lot about the dance party that takes place. I arrived at 11:30 to find the place shoulder to shoulder. Got a place by back door and waited to see how things developed. The DJ's did a great job of playing classic favorites... rock, motown, and some classic hip-hop... essentially a night of instantly recognizable sing-alongs. People danced here and there, but I kept wondering why the entire room wasn't dancing. Eventually, as the night progressed... so did people's intoxication levels... and by 3am the place finally reached it's dancing peak as people screamed along to Nirvana and The Strokes. Details: The bar is nice and roomy. It's dimly lit, but not dark... more warm than anything. There are a few booths up against the wall, but once it gets busy they become the unofficial coat depository. I don't recall seeing a coat check... if there's not someone is missing out on some cash. The sound system is wonderful... it's nice to see a bar putting a good amount of thought into the sound. There are 4 unisex bathrooms... one of which is handicapped accessible. Out back there is a great outdoor patio with a small taco stand. They have overhead heating elements under tents on the patio, but unfortunately they aren't quite strong enough to make much of a difference... but are a still a nice thought for us smokers! I've only had one chorizo taco so far and it was phenomenal. I can't wait to get back on Tuesday and dive into it a bit more. Staff... I can't comment on the bar staff as I haven't personally been to bar to get a drink yet. Someone has gotten all of my drinks for me. Door security and bathroom security were polite and helpful. The guy at the back door was a bit pushy and brash with people. I'm in a wheelchair and rather than either letting me work my way through or to politely ask people to move he kinda yelled and shooed at people. The method was more confusing and jarring to people than helpful... but I also know that I'm apparently rare in Brooklyn and it's gonna take a bit for staff to get used to how to react / not react to a wheelchair. read more
