It's also located quite a bit off the freeway, which is nice because you get a decent night's sleep. Right across the street is small lounge and restaurant. Had cocktails that night in the lounge (no food there after 8pm) and a pretty typical diner breakfast in the lounge the next day. The Desert Sun Motel is a nice little oasis in the desert.

Being able to not take interstate highways for a lot of the trip AND having no clue where we were going to spend each night was something we looked forward to. Arriving late afternoon in Winslow we drove slowly past the Desert Sun Motel. The rooms were in a semi circle around a huge pea gravel parking area. We checked in to room 22 and I must say that it was one of the nicest budget places we have stayed in a long time. At $40 including taxes, this was not the cheapest place we stayed in, but the room was one of the best. It had recently been remodeled and the bathroom was just like home ... spacious, nice tile, well lit ... really clean and roomy. The bedroom had a most comfortable mattress and armoir, sitting chair with ottoman and TV. The room had a very neutral odor ... no cover ups here ... and very quiet during the evening. Driving through Winslow might scare most people off from stopping, but take the time to walk around, have a cup of coffee and definitely stay overnight at the Desert Sun. Nice managers and nice motel. You will think you are back in the 50's again.

While Autumn is in full effect, East Coast post Sandy style, I dream of the khaki desert, and that 1930s Art Deco Frank Lloyd Wright one of a kind on-top-of-the-hill oasis in Holbrock, AZ. I'm eating pretzel chips and hummus paired with a semi domestic fridge-fresh brew as I write this, thinking about how it all started. My husband was tired after driving 500 miles and committed himself to the "National Geographic" (meaning the painting above the bed was done by a National Geographic Artist) bed for a disco nap. Feeling jumpy after sitting in the car all day, I grabbed my camera and the one beer I salvaged from Mother Road Brewing Co. in Flagstaff, AZ ready to explore our new pad for the night. Making my way to the kitchen hoping to ice my beer, I ran into Randy, one of the proprietors. He invited me to have some wine in the garden area, whenever I wanted. "...How about now?" would be my auto answer to a question of that nature. We talked about family, his previous profession, beer, and life in the dessert. An hour had passed. He left for a few minutes and came back with a family sized tub of hummus, and some Mexican beer, because he thought I might appreciate something a little different than Bud Light. We were on beer 3, Linda, Heward House owner and wife of Randy, joined us. The first time I ever learned to adore a Texan drawl is from Linda, an incredibly energetic, emotional and intellectual genius. Soon, my husband joined us, dewy eyed from his afternoon hiberation. All four of us together, I felt like we were a big happy family. We talked about government, social security, national debt, real estate, life, and all the funny mishaps inbetween. Another couple, newlyweds from Kansas, arrived, fresh from touring. We left for Italian food in the high dessert. We came back with stomach aches remedied by more delightful conversation with the middle aged Kansan newlyweds and Randy and Linda. More stories involving Jonny Dep's stay at the house (which happens to be the same room we stayed in) and what Randy would cook for breakfast: biscuits and gravy, hatch chile scrambled eggs, hash browns, and fresh fruit. Coffee was delicious and I cannot wait to return. If you are heading to the Petrified Forest, or driving Route 66, this is a must stop.

Note that we were in site 9 and although it's a pull through be sure to go around the loop )2nd right) the opposite way to pull in. It's tough if you come in the gate and make the right turn towards the site. Site 9 actually had a little shade too! Front office staff (Tracy) is great! He gave us the code for the theater and gym. If you want to cool down for a bit they always have a movie running in the theater (til 6pm). We camped at Meteor Crater RV Park in a Motorhome. Note they offer SEVERAL discounts: Escapees 15%, Good Sam's 10% for sure. I think AAA and FMCA as well. Just call and ask before you book.

August 24, 2026 - Winslow, AZ…read more How can you pass up a chance to stand on the edge of one of the best-preserved large impact craters on Earth? If you're in the area, definitely stop. The crater is impressive, but the Discovery Center & Space Museum is worth the visit, too. It's packed with informative, interactive exhibits, plus a 4D movie that's definitely geared toward kids--but we enjoyed it anyway. There's also a movie about the mystery of the crater. We didn't have time to check out the dining area, but it looked like a great spot to relax and grab a bite or drink. Traveling with an RV? There's a parking lot for large RVs. They also have individual outdoor kennels for pets ($17 per pet). We were a little surprised by the entrance price at first, but after seeing everything included, we thought the $27 senior rate was very was actually pretty reasonable. Lots to see and do, and definitely worth the visit.

My family and I were doing a West Coast road trip and the last leg of the trip had us coming…read morethrough Arizona. As soon as I saw this was on our route, I had to make it happen. It is located just a short distance from Flagstaff and right off the interstate in Winslow, AZ. It was a random weekday when we came so there wasn't a huge crowd and parking was readily available. We also waited to get our tickets once we arrived. I subtract a point for the cost of general admission. It's pretty steep at about 29 dollars for an adult. This gets you access to I believe all of the attractions on site. Walking in, you immediately get to see the Holsinger Meteorite which doesn't look insanely big, but it weighs in at almost a ton. Most of the rest of the meteor dissipated upon impact. The impact created is what you came here to see, the meteor crater. It's definitely very cool to see something like this in person because the only other thing I've ever seen about meteor and craters were in books or movies. The crater is almost a mile wide and 750 deep. You gotta see it to believe it. They have multiple lookout points around the crater. Keep in mind, if you come in the summer like us, you're going to get the hot, dessert heart with not lots of shade. They have telescopes if you want to get a better look. There is also an indoor observation area in the Discovery Center. They also have guided tours if you want to walk to walk the rim of the crater. I believe there also also opportunities on certain days to hike the meteor floor. There are also things to see inside. They have the Blast Zone for interactive fun for the kids. There is a museum inside with all kinds of cool information about the meteor and space things. If you want to get off your feet for a little bit, they have a theater that plays a very informative film about the history of Meteor Crater. One of my favorite parts was the 4D theater. It was cheesy, but fun. Another cool thing they have here is an actual Apollo 11 space capsule used for training the likes of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin when they trained at the Meteor Crater. I love museums and things like this alot and will always stop when nearby. This will most likely be a one and done for me, but I highly suggest stopping by to see it atleast once in your life.

We had him for 9 hours and his rates were reasonable, something else hard to find today. He played an amazing reception and gave us the best wedding ive been to in my life. I cant say enough about his excitement to give everyone a great time, and wathcing him enjoy what he does, was the icing on the cake!
