So glad we found this little gem in Lillington! Great wine selection, live music on both nights we went (Wednesday & Friday), and free tastings on Friday. The ladies working are super friendly and inviting. Fun spot for a drink and worth checking out! And, there's a great beer selection for the non-wine drinkers

It's been well over 9 months since I last raved about Barcelona Wine Bar, located in the heart of…read moredowntown Raleigh. I am compelled to remind every resident and every visitor to make this a "must go to and enjoy" place for either brunch on Saturday or Sunday, or for dinner any night of the week. Go for the amazing cuisine, vast wine list, and stay for the outstanding service! Recently, we have found ourselves trying not to enjoy just our go-to favorites that are mainstays on the ever-evolving menu. We have been blown away by the flavors of the large plate option called Chicken Pimientos. Don't let the name throw you, because it's not super spicy, it just has a nice kick to it with delicious potatoes accompanying the very moist and flavorful chicken. The way the kitchen team at Barcelona handles the preparation of the eggplant caponata is impressive and very unique. Other favorites on the tapas section of the menu recently are stuffed piquillos, corn zucchini bunuelos (think fair food turned healthy!), Wagyu carpaccio, lamb kofta, and pulpo gallego. Remember that their tapas offerings rotate in and out, oftentimes based on the season and availability of fresh products. The wine offerings are unparalleled in the city of Raleigh, and when you visit for dinner on a Monday evening, every bottle is half-priced. Can't beat that for a way to jump-start your work week! We tend to sit at the bar on most visits as bartenders Kira and Cameron truly handle their bar with a welcoming vibe and impressive ease. General manager Jed is a visible leader of this great team and makes every guest feel appreciated. Awesome job all the way around!

We shared a glass of cava, which was crisp and delicious. I chose the aperitivo board and my husband ordered the paella mariscos. My husband lived in Spain for a while so he had high hopes for the paella; alas, it was very salty and the calamari was missing. It was so salty that we only had one or two bites. I keep telling my husband that he just shouldn't order paella in the US anymore. The manager was extremely accommodating and offered many options to help! The aperitivo board was divine. The items were bursting with flavors. My favorites were the marcona almonds, the aged manchego, and the potatas bravas. The table bread and oil were also fresh and delicious. There was another dish that I'm not sure if we ordered or if it was included, but the fish flavor was too strong for me so I passed on that. My husband enjoyed it though. I'd love to try some different menu options for our next visit.

I appreciated the complimentary bread and butter, that's not something you usually see at a brunch spot. The butter was also a fun vanilla, peach flavor.

Apparently Circa does not take reservations. They would not seat us unless we had our full party. I mean it's a small place so I totally understand that they don't want to put two people at a table of four if they end up being only two people... So, I asked if we could sit at the bar and order a drink while we waited. Ummm no! She said that that bar seating counted as seating! Who on earth turns down the potential to make money at the bar while people are waiting for the rest of their party?? It was the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life. If we hadn't driven an hour and a half to meet a family member who was also traveling an hour and a half from the other direction, I think we would have just walked out and gone someplace else! She actually even suggested that we go to the bar next-door and get appetizers before we come to them! Again, how stupid is that? The food was good but a little highfalutin.... I totally understand fancy food. I actually enjoy it. But there were members of our party that just wanted simple eggs and bacon. And we asked if there was like an ala-cart menu where someone could get just a regular breakfast with nothing fancy.... they did not have that option. Stupid number three. So I get it... Clearly they have a good reputation and are busy. But I'm not sure I would ever be back because of the "snottiness" attitude. They're not a Michelin star Breakfast Place. Get over yourself. I guess I just feel like they shot themselves in the foot by being so pretentious.

We were seated in a back room at a long table, one of three. This room was warm and lovely. One table was already occupied, the other filled up shortly before we finished. From start to finish, our dining experience was wonderful. We did not have to worry about our little ones disrupting other guests, as the other party had little ones too. Our server, Madeline, was absolutely perfect! She was attentive without being intrusive. She had a good sense of humor and guided out decisions for food when we asked. She served us promptly and with a smile and made us feel so welcomed. I wish I could remember what everyone else ordered but I do know that my Pork Schnitzel was incredible! Also huge so I had enough for another meal the next day. When I return I will order the same thing. My husband brought a birthday cake in for me and our server brought that out at the end of the meal with plates and forks for everyone. We forced her to take a piece for her break, which she goodnaturedly did. There is only one tiny tiny thing to mention: It did take a long while for the 5 year old's drink and food to arrive. Not anyone's fault, it was very very busy. But try to explain that to a 5 year old. Rolls were served but they were too spicy for her. Or maybe the butter was spicy? Maybe feed your little ones something beforehand if you go on a busy weekend night, as we did. Kudos to the kitchen for pleasing so many different tastes so much, and for management for hiring Madeline who is a great asset to your restaurant.

There's an upscale bar in the entry that had several seats open even when the tables were all full. I started with the crab hush puppies. What's not to like about fried dough after all, but I didn't really get much crab flavor out of them. The buttermilk and corn preparation came through more. The entree was a showstopper, though - grilled elk chops with a pomegranate glaze and country mashed potatoes. They were scrumptious, and the al dente vegetables cooked in with the potatoes gave them a nice toothsomeness. One of the best entrees I've had in quite some time. It's nice when a menu gives you a protein choice you don't see everywhere. Parking is fine, with a paved lot in front and spaces on either side of the adjacent street. Service was welcoming and efficient.
