As Randy Jackson would say, "That's a no from me, dawg." I walked in on a weekend to peruse their selection and see about getting something nice for a family dinner. The person working inside/owner looked at me and then immediately looked away without acknowledging me or even greeting me. He then immediately proceeded to help someone else instead and led him into a back room for more conversation. As I wandered the store alone, I also realized that while they have an eclectic selection, the selection actually wasn't a good one, and it was extremely expensive. Do these guys understand that 90% of wine sold is actually drank that very day or the next? If that's the case, wouldn't you want to capitalize on more customers and more approachable prices? We have not once been engaged by the people in the store. Looking for a quick bottle to grab for dinner and walked in right before they closed at 7pm. It's a small store, but has a nice selection of really good wines. Ones I was familiar with or know of. Not a fancy space, it was simple and sort of cramped but what do you expect in a local wine shop? I used to go to their old locale down the way when my ex lived in the area. They've opened a new but smaller shop from the other space. They dont have the lounge anymore and the shelves are high and narrow. However they have a good range of high end spirits, wine and beer which is definitely worth check ing out. read more

Bought four bottles here. Three were the same Pinot noir and the fourth was a red blend. The wine in two of the three pinots went bad. I haven't opened the third bottle but I suspect the wine in the last bottle is bad as well. I should have known something was up when I walked into this store to pickup my online order. It was so warm. It's no wonder the wine (2017 Pinot) I bought went bad. The red blend was OK but given my experience I suspect something was off w that one as well. I would not buy wine here unless u know they just received it. I would avoid any wine that is on clearance or an older vintage. They clearly don't know how wine should be stored. read more

One man ignored me( the father that VO mentions I 'm sure) when I said I needed help I persisted He pointed to a younger guy, a rather arrogant guy, who did "help" me What I got were two crapstastic bottles of Pinot. One with a twist off cap which was defective. I'll never get my money back because I stupidly paid cash ( pay with a card and you do a charge back ) I'm going to say that these people don't know squat about wine and they seem to hate or feel indifferent towards women and gay people. That aside, they carry brands that you'll see at Bev Mo. . . hello . . I cudda gone to Bev Mo if I wanted cheapy cheapy. I expect more in Burlingame. These guys should open a falafel shop. Being that this is a wine shop in Burlingame, despite the cheesy red stop sign above the door, you assume this will be a classy upscale place with classy upscale wines. The latter, yes. The former, no. They stock Opus 1, Sterling and Cakebread among a sparse selection of my favorite gerwurtraminers, but the classy atmosphere is noticeably absent. You get the feeling that you're in a dark and dreary warehouse, bottles kept haphazardly with no regard to their safety and well being. Something like a puppy mill for wine. Talk to the people that work there, you're glad they only stock inanimate objects. They don't present themselves in a way that instills faith in their wine recommending abilities nor do they seem to care about wine. One patron asked if they carried wine from a certain vineyard and he received a response of "no" and nothing else. The employee didn't bother to come out from behind the counter to look for the wine or to find an equivalent wine. He just said "no" and waited for the customer to walk away. Luckily they post ratings from wine magazines to aid your choice. To sum it up: service is bad, conditions are less than optimal, prices are so-so but selection is good. Plus an added bonus that they are right around the corner from me and are the only place other than Safeway that sells wine. They have my business. read more

I made an order before the holidays ahead of time to ensure the product would arrive in time. I even paid extra for expedited two day shipping. A month later, I still have not received my order. I have emailed and called multiple times and have received no reply every time. I finally went onto their website to see what I could do to get my money back and checked the product pages. They were both sold out and listed a date of expected new stock. I never received any email letting me know that the item was out of stock and the order would be delayed. Terrible customer service. The staff here is not only friendly but are knowledgeable. They hand pick their inventory and are passionate about what they sell. If you have a question about a particular Oregon pinot, make no mistake they will know and will tell you all about it right down to the last detail. A Japanese whiskey? Yep, they carry those too and you will leave the shop feeling like an expert. For those of you who are driving in, there is plenty of metered parking right behind the store. There is also free (2 hour) street parking in (and around) Burlingame. read more

Make The Wine Stop your Next Stop I've been going to this wine shop for over 10 years now. When I was in college I'd save a little money and then go to The Wine Stop to pick up an expensive bottle to lay down and a cheap bottle of beaujolais to quaff with my buddies. For me The Wine Stop takes the best of The Wine Club and K&L and rolls them into one great place to purchase wine. Their high end wines are extremely competitive in price and you can check prices in advance on their Web site. They also have a great newsletter to keep you up to date on current releases, specials etc. Most of the higher end wines are displayed on racks and the middle and lower tier are displayed in bins with good descritpions, ratings and write ups. I can seriously spend hours looking over all of their wines. So, next time you want to visit a different wine shop just head a few minutes outside of SF and stop at The Wine Stop. read more

Got a response within a day explaining that new owners had just taken over and I received my shipment 3 days later. My husband and I have visited The Wine Stop a few times in last six months. Each time it's the same story. An empty store with at least two employees who do not bother to say hello. The last time we walked in I stood at the cash register with a bottle of wine ready to purchase and the man on the computer did not bother to get up. Indy helped me find a plush bottle of wine within my budget and impressed my coworker and her husband with the end product. Afraid to say it but I'm going to have to pull the shenanigans card out of the back pocket and flash it here. Given the I have friends who reside mere blocks from here, I've tried at least two dozen bottles of past vintage wines (i.e. stuff that was released several years ago, not wines that are or should be past their prime) and I gotta say, the rate at which the wines from here scored as having aged beyond where they should was astonishing...and not necessarily in a good way. An eight year old supertuscan from a stellar year. Flat and dead. Five year old burg from a killer vintage? oxidized and past its prime. We always teased my buddy for having bad luck with his purchases...but now I know better. It's warm here. uncomfortably warm. And I'm born in the tropics. This, is sincerely no bueno for the wines, and goes to explain the unusually past prime nature of the wines I've tasted from here. yes, selection is great, but the product, unless it just came in the door a week ago, is quietly baking to death in their glass sarcophagi. And so I opted to pick up some decent single-malt scotch instead, since that's a little less prone to spoilage. On taking it out of the sleeve after getting her home, I notice that someone, with a razor, had cut through the lead capsule (rather subtly I might add so that it was really hard to see), and could therefore have emptied out the contents of this particular single-malt (which was around $65 or so) with something of lesser value. After nosing it, sure enough, not what it should be...this one should've been peaty and I picked up none of the smoke or iodine that it should have. SHENANIGANS! I probably should have taken it back but I tossed it down the sink instead, but I wasn't about to drive down again just to get pissed off. I won't accuse these guys of having made the switch, but it did happen from here, so keep an eye out if you pick up anything in a box here...inspect the bottle first before you go homw. read more

Sloppy Service I ordered thru them online to ship to another state on Dec 17. Kept checking the courier tracking website but it produced no details. Finally called the Wine Stop dec 29 to inquire. The guy who answered said one of the bottles I had ordered 'broke' and they had to re-order a replacement from the winery. I received no call or email notification while this fiasco at the Wine Stop occurred! The person on the other end evaded my questions on why they made no attempt to call me. My order took 6 days to be processed (maybe this is typical and I've just been spoiled by amazon's quick turnaround), but so far they have still failed to provide any tracking # despite saying that the shipments were tracked. Since packages must be signed for by an adult, I need to know when it's likely to arrive so I can try to be home. I've sent emails to the customer service account and have waited multiple days with no acknowledgment or response whatsoever. Based on some other reviews here, it seems like ignoring customer questions is their m.o. I'll update if they get back to me or when/if I get my package. **Update** I sent 3 emails over a 1 week period and still have zero response or acknowledgment. I missed the package on its first delivery attempt (a Friday) since I didn't have the tracking information that could have told me to expect the delivery. Had to wait until Monday for redelivery. The package of course had a tracking number on it. I don't know why they didn't bother sharing it with me. Overall, it was a very frustrating experience dealing with them, BUT they did have a hard to find drink for a good price and it was well packaged, so they deserve some credit for that. read more
