Ian Williams is my brother, so I'm obviously biased, but his handyman work and contracting work is…read moresuperb! He gave my husband and me the gift of the installation of a custom fold-down cutting board where a rickety fold-down ironing board used to be. This, of course, was totally his idea because he's creative like that. The cutting board is beautiful, solid, and functional, adding 30% more surface area to our kitchen. It's far superior to the ironing board that was there previously. He used top notch parts, sourced from specialty cabinet makers, to construct it. Ian was also timely and cleaned up after himself. I would feel confident hiring Ian for bigger projects, as I have seen him helping his former employer (my Dad) build bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and more. Sure, I may be his sister, but I'm his older sister and thus prone to harsh judgement... so you know you can trust my review, and Ian with all of your handyman needs.

Ian completed a bathroom remodel in our 1940s town house. Before Ian came to our aid, the bathroom…read morewas a nightmare--kelly green tile, broken prefab shower, water damage, and crumbling studs. Ian reframed our space and created a luxurious corner shower complete with an inset shelf for shampoo. His tiling job was excellent! He also thought to create a handy door to a water shut off that will be a huge help if we have issues in the future! Despite having a full bath steps from our bedroom, my husband and I both shower in the basement now, enjoying our spa-like retreat from Hilltop Renovations! Ian was a considerate worker while in our home. He took care of our living spaces by laying drop cloths and covering furniture to minimize drywall dust. He was super pleasant and personable--the dog missed him when our job was done. We highly recommend Ian for your next project. Margot and Nathan D.

My wife and I hired Terry Montague, the owner and sole proprietor of ABC Fence Builders, LLC,…read morelocated in Burlington, NC to install PVC fencing around our yard. Upon signing the contract, Mr. Montague was paid $11,825 with a balance due at completion. At his request, he was also provided with a survey of the property. He was told we wanted installation to begin immediately and assured us he would. It took nearly 6 weeks, several phone calls and numerous excuses blaming other people before he got started. Terry missed the property line by approx. 15' inward, giving our neighbor 15' of our property at a distance of 250'. As it turns out, rather than measuring the property himself, Terry relied on stakes in the ground that unbeknownst to all of us, had been previously knocked down and put back up incorrectly. Terry came to our home, told us he would fix the problem, but he would need an additional $600 for extra materials. We agreed. Upon completion we were provided with a bill seeking the agreed upon balance, the extra $600 we agreed to pay, plus an additional $3,500. Terry was now charging us for the taking down and reinstallation along the property line. When I called Terry to discuss the bill, his initial and immediate response was, "I spoke with my lawyer. I am not a surveyor. I do not read surveys." When asked why he didn't discuss the additional $3,500 when he came to our door to discuss the $600 in supplies, he stated, "I made an estimation of your character and knew what road this was going to go down and I did not want to go down that road with you. Did you really think there wouldn't be any more fees for the labor?" This was in reference to my earlier complaints about delays in getting started. Terry doesn't take well to criticism. Due to the way his payment system is set up, partial payments can't be made. We refused to pay anything beyond the balance of $10,000 plus $600. We then received a lawyer's letter demanding payment of $14,377.19 and threatening legal action if we refused. We did not pay. Sometime thereafter, Terry called and offered to split the $3,500. I rejected his settlement offered $10,000 as we were no longer willing to pay the additional $600 for materials. He hung up on me. Days later we received a bill for $10,877.19 (bal. + processing fee). Said bill stated, "payment in full." We paid the entire amount. On or about 1/8/2024 a powerful storm knocked down large sections of our fence. My wife contacted him via text and advised him of the damage and requested he come and repair it. He demanded payment of $3,500 first. I then contacted him via text, provided pictures, requested he come repair the damage and suggested he speak with his attorney before responding. He immediately responded with, "see ya." We were forced to hire another contractor to repair the fence at a cost of $5,150. We filed a complaint with the NCAG's office. In his response to our complaint. In typical Terry fashion, he responded by again attacking my character. In addition, he stated we were outside our 6-month warranty while he continues to advertise on Facebook that his work is backed by a 3-year warranty. We have attempted to sue Terry in Small Claims Court for the cost of our repairs. We have been informed by the Court that when the Sherriff's Department attempted to serve him with our complaint, he refused to open his door to accept service. A google search of Terry's business shows a number of reviews by consumers who had very similar experiences with Terry as ours. Terry has posted a response to each negative review claiming the person posting the review has never been a customer of his. I managed to contact one of these customers and verified he was who he claimed that he had sued Terry for $3,000, obtained a default judgment because Terry failed to appear in court, and has been unable to collect. Terry will respond to this review by either denying that we have ever been his customers or, because I have so much documentation proving we were customers, by attacking me personally. If you don't have the facts, argue the law. If you don't have the law, argue the facts. If you don't have either, attack your opponent. As an aside, we live in a brand new development with over 50 new houses. We were the very first people to put up a fence. If Terry had handled this appropriately he could have earned hundreds of thousands of dollars in new business. Instead, he came after us for $3,500. I suppose one shouldn't expect wise business acumen from a fence installer who can't read a survey. Lastly, Terry immediately deleted this review upon its posting on ABC Fence Installers website. He's also deleted every other negative review that previously appeared. Ironic that you would call me dishonest, Terry. Like everything else about Terry Montague, his website is a lie.
