Once again I had the biggest breakfast. I see the steak and eggs ($20), and think I should get that. The just a little under there is the sausage, bacon and ham for 5$ more ($25). My boyfriend got a breakfast poutine it came with a blend of cheese not curds. My plate did not come with the beans... the menu still says that it should and only got one toast (menu says 3). I don't eat bread gave the toast to my partner. My steak came blue (they brought it back to heat up again) it was good the second time. I know this is not a steakhouse. Bacon was cold and hard. The potatoes and sausage very good. This is a popular spot and it's my second visit. I was definitely disappointed by this visit. Other than Panda Game, the other reason why I came to Ottawa was to check out the diner scene that I have missed from my days at Carleton University. And finally, I got to check out the legendary Wellington Diner. Considered one of Ottawa's best diners in the city, the Wellington Diner offers a great variety of diner fare, whether it be breakfast plates, hashes, burgers, poutine, etc, there is something for the varying appetites. After looking over the menu, I decided upon the Rough Rider Hash as I was looking for a big hearty brunch. Boy, that hash was quite filling. A nice balance between the friend potatoes, Hollaindaise, sauteed beef and veggies and poached egg, it was a symphony in my mouth. My other two friends ordered the Boss Poutine and the Chuck's Cheese Burger and based on their expressions, they were quite pleased with the quantity and quality. Although this place has received mixed reviews on their service, my friends and I received great service from our waitress. I wish we got her name as she was quite pleasant and provided great recommendations for us. I can't wait for my next trip to Ottawa as I am dying to go back to even potentially try their food challenge or even just for a good hangover breakfast. read more

I'm new to Ottawa. One day we were wandering around and we decided to eat at this diner without any previous information about the place. We fell in love with it and we have been back more times since we moved here. Our go to: the pulled pork mac and cheese. Now be prepared to share because the serving is huge! Looked up on sites and found a nearby restaurant for brunch. The website seemed to suit our needs but upon reaching it was closed for renovation. Went up to this Diner for brunch. Seemed quite busy, and we were seated in about 10 minutes. Lots of Uber Eats drivers picking up food. Between the four of us we ordered a scrambled with toast and home fries, but replaced the eggs with Tofu for about $2 extra - not worth extra for sure and overall the dish lacked any flavour. In our opinion it should be a discount not extra for the amount of tofu replaced. And even than probably not worth. The "Green Onion Homies" are nothing but home fries with a few chopped green onions on top the potatoes were the frozen kind. Fancy name but nothing new in your palate. Only one slice of bread-because it was Rye? We ordered # 1 Omelette which was very good. The Brie came up nicely We also ordered a off the menu item called Grilled Cheese with Benedict with chipotle hollandaise rather than the regular. This dish was good but the chipotle holly was below average We ordered a traditional breakfast with no meat and was surprised with the quantity of eggs. Did not seem 2 eggs at all. May be one. The fries hardly any and just one slice of toast-perhaps I ordered a whole wheat? And finally breakfast poutine. Which was good. The coffee was good, but had to ask for seconds and that's it. People behind me were seated before us (my daughter and I) because their full party was present ( we were waiting for 2 more ) Even after I told the hostess the rest of my party had just driven by looking for parking, no go. The food is great and usually the staff are very nice. However, I ordered through DoorDash once and they sent two of the same sandwich when we ordered two different ones. We took photos and everything for proof and called the restaurant. They said the owner would call us back but never did. They didn't seem to concerned about the issue either. This place can be pricey when ordering for a family of 4, so I wasn't very happy with that experience. However, I've had more good than bad experience and have been going here for years. This is one of my favorite places to lunch in Westboro. During one of my gluten-free phases it was hard for me to find a place that actually had tasty food that I could digest. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Wellington Diner offered all their sandwiches and wraps on gluten-free breads. It's find to offer gluten-free options, but the sandwich has to have some deliciousness to make you forget about the somewhat styrofoamy taste of potato flour. I had a delicious sandwich with avacado and fresh veggies and it was pure perfection. After I abandoned my gluten-free ways I went back for brunch which was superbe. Their eggs benedict were perfect and the hash browns were savory and crispy - just the way I like them! If you're looking for a great brunch spot this is absolutely one of the best in Wellington/Westboro. I highly recommend trying the three cheese poutine if you're arteries aren't clogged - it's life changing. read more

I had decent (3 star) brunch experiences here before but when they overcooked the eggs on my benedict it was near impossible to get the servers attention and I was met with attitude when I did. She never checked up on us and I was so hungry I ate one of the eggs. When i finally flagged her down she said "well what do you want me to do? You obviously called me because you want me to do something?" I asked for it to be redone but because we'd already been waiting for so long to get her attention and I just wanted to get out of there at that point, I changed my mind shortly after and asked for the bill. The server then she let me know the kitchen already started on my eggs. So i said fine I'll take em. The to-go container had only poached eggs and hollandaise. Literally just that, nothing else. My original benny was on a kettlemans bagel with chipotle hollandaise, avocado, ham, tomato etc. Like if I had known that was all I was going to get I would've told them to just forget it. The right thing to do would've been to take it off the bill. What makes this more insulting is that the same thing happened to the girl beside me but the server was actually nice and even apologized for the food during billing. All she said to us during billing was "the battery on the machines pretty low but it should still work". And then a different server collected the receipt... I regret not bringing this up to the manager (but I mean given the way this dude responds to his Google & Facebook reviews he'd probably just shift the blame to me somehow) but this place isn't getting anymore of my money. read more

Ordered a classic club and waffles..... when I got home I ended up with a California club (that I couldn't eat because I'm allergic to avocado) and the waffles were destroyed on account that the maple syrup wasn't actually maple syrup but plum sauce !!?!? Looking for a Sunday morning breakfast, and found this diner. Atmosphere is top notch, 50s diner feel, I was seated by the window and was lovely to see the bright morning sun. I got the traditional breakfast. I didn't need a coffee or tea, so ordered water. No ice, but wish it had been offered. I ordered two eggs poached medium, they were perfect! I upgraded the toast to a kettleman's bagel (worth it!) and a side of sausage. The sausage was lukewarm, I would have preferred it a touch hotter. I came here with my parents and girlfriend for brunch, mainly because my girlfriend and myself were craving pancakes. We remembered that we really liked their pancakes (see other review) so we ordered a stack of them, along with some other foods (a standard breakfast platter for my dad, lobster eggs benedict for my mom, and my girlfriend got a green eggs and ham omlette). The pancakes however, were a disappointment this time. The first order we got, I cut in to them excitedly and something wasn't quite right. They were very sticky in the middle, not remotely fluffy like what we had last time. It seemed like the pancake was undercooked. The pancake residue stuck to my knife as I cut. I took one bite and it clung to the inside of my mouth. I notified our waitress, who was extremely nice, and told her that maybe it was undercooked? She took it back, came out and said that the kitchen would make me a new batch, a bit thinner so it would cook more thoroughly. Great. After about 10 minutes (during which I enjoyed everyone else's food), the pancakes came back. They were steaming hot, so I thought: okay, these ones must be cooked through. I cut through them again and began nibbling, but encountered the same problem: the centre remained very sticky, and again, to the point where it was stuck to my knife. My girlfriend took a bite as well and said that it was still similar to the first plate we sent back. The waitress came to check on us again, so we did notify her and showed her how the inside looked and how everything was sticking to the knife. She apologized, took the food back and offered to make something else for me and said that the pancakes would be taken off our bill. Shortly after, the manager showed up to chat and ask about the problem, and I asked if they had changed their pancake recipe (simply because it was so good the last time we got it). The manager said nothing changed, but they had some new trainee chefs in the kitchen, which may have explained why the pancakes weren't done properly. She again offered to get something else for us, but I was getting quite full nibbling on everyone else's food (they have big portions here), so we were fine. All the other foods were very tasty and their service was top notch. I left feeling happy (despite not getting the fantastic pancakes I had last time) because of the level of service we received. While I can do a good breakfast at home, going out for breakfast is a nice treat and I've been trying to get to as many places as I can in Ottawa known for good breakfasts. So, I decided to try The Wellington Diner since it is known to have a good breakfast. FOOD On the breakfast side of things, TWD has the regular egg, eggs benedict, omelette dish. They also have an all day breakfast menu as well as a breakfast special on weekdays for $5.99. I had their 'Mish Mash' omelette which was fine though the hashbrowns (homies they call them) are of the deep fried variety which isn't a personal favourite though the green onions were a good addition. The coffee (decaf) was pretty good. Portions are a little small though for a supposedly three egg omelette. SERVICE Service was quick, good and friendly on my visit with no complaints. VALUE Here's where I have an issue with TWD as it seems their more expensive breakfast items (i.e. omelettes) don't include free coffee. For a diner with relatively simple fair that is priced as much or maybe a bit more than other places, coffee should be included in the price. Oddly enough, the much cheaper egg dishes ($5.99 breakfast special, $7.99 traditional breakfast, or $11.99 big breakfast) all include free coffee but the omelette which, while fine, wasn't remarkable in size or ingredients for $11.99 doesn't get a free coffee? That, unfortunately, not only knocks a star off my review but would also keep me from going back (unless of course you stick to the regular breakfast specials). Three years ago my family and I moved to Ottawa from Toronto. We were ecstatic to find the Wellington Diner. Great food, great with kids with an adult feel to the place. I was even happier when I saw the bill. It was well below the cost that we had paid when going to other restaurants in Ottawa. I was so excited about it that I actually remarked the waitress about how happy I was about the price and food. Three years later, I know the owners have changed and although the food is still good the price went up significantly. It's now just under double what we paid before and they no longer carry a veggie burger. We were there just this week. The waiter was great at customer service but a terrible waiter. We also received a 'deconstructed' peanut butter, jelly and banana sandwich that we ordered to split for our two kids. I'd have to say as a parent of 2 under the age of 5 that last thing I want to do is pay $6.99 to make my childs sandwich. Honestly I went there so I didn't have to make the sandwich. I'm a tired parent. My husband and I tried to keep our loud children quiet so we didn't disturb the other patrons. I love a good diner, heck I even love a bad diner but fortunately this one is a good one. A few of us went there for dinner a couple of days ago and I was impressed. The first impression was that it was a good place for larger parties, not massive ones but there were a few booths that comfortably sat 6 people. Our waitress was very friendly and we ordered beers to start with. Happy that they had local microbrews on tap and we split a pair of pitchers amongst the six of us. For food I had a really good shepherd's pie made with pulled pork. The pulled pork was really tasty with nice real mashed potatoes. The side Caesar salad I had was also good with actual pieces of bacon on top as opposed to bacon bits which was a nice touch. One of my friends had a chicken burger that he really liked and another friend had a steak sandwich that looked tasty. I was a little carb craving so I ordered a poutine and chocolate banana milkshake. YAHOOOOOOO! The milkshake was so rich and thick and delicious, the poutine was perfection! Really good sauce and everything melted together into one big and beautiful experience. Did I say big? First time we went, our orders took so incredibly long that - even without complaining - they gave us free gift certificates. A nice touch that makes you forgive bad service (or kitchen mishap, as they put it). So we went back again, and this time our food came within forty minutes but the service was equally scattered. Lots of staff running around (all seemingly teenagers) but never there when you need them. Okay, that's fine but the food is all fresh out of the freezer and utterly bland. The menu is a typical unimaginative mix of diner/pub grub that you find almost everywhere in this town, except not as good as the standard joint. The prices - even by Ottawa's overpriced standards - are high compared to the poor quality of food (you know, like a fourteen dollar salad). Stopped by the Wellington Diner on a visit back to Canada from Oz and was completely blown away! Service was great. I had the Mac Daddy burger with a side of the breakfast poutine ... unbelievable. It's a real burger that needs a minimum of two napkins afterwards due to the "flavour dripping". I lived in Ottawa 25 years, and nothing comes close. Staff is always friendly and prompt with the coffee ( a must! ) I like that they have specials on the blackboard that are off menu- the menu is tasty but standard breakfast noms. I arrived at 11:10am, 10 mins too late to take advantage of their $5 breakfast, which includes 2 eggs, bacon/ham/sausage, potatoes and coffee/tea. The place wasn't packed but we waited a good 30 mins to order and about 40 mins to be served and another 30 after we had done eating to pay the check. For a brunch hotspot that was questionable speed. Food. Vegan option My fiancé order a veggie scramble made with tofu It was a 3$ up charge. (tofu is cheaper than eggs) there was less than an egg worth of tofu on the plate. I had coffee. Pancakes and some eggs Benedict. Coffee I poured spoiled milk in my first cup of coffee. They have a little basket with small creamers. Half if not more we're bad. I ended pouring spoiled cream in my second cup of coffee so I just gave up and didn't order a new one. Main dish The eggs Benedict variation I ordered was called The East Coast Shuffle. It was mediocre at best. Frozen still cold lobster, Old hollandaise sauce, And South American avocado (the really really sweet ones). The pancake was undercooked but a good portion. Price. 43$ my only two issues were the extra charge placed on olives which were substituted out from feta cheese in my fiancé's meal (and didn't even make it into the dish) and the 2.99$ charge for tofu which is cheaper than eggs and was served in extremely underwhelming portion. I read some of the reviews before coming here and seeing it's mixed I decided to try it out. I was by myself and was sitting in the second level. Ordered a traditional bfast and received the food in literally 2 minutes (!!!). They said that they are very busy on weekend's morning (I came on Sat) so they have their chefs ready for orders. I've always loved The Wellington and have never had a bad meal or experience here. The owner is wonderful considering how busy this place gets but he usually finds a way to greet everyone on their way in or out. Weeknight evenings are nice and quiet here too, if you don't like the bustle of weekends. Halloween is the best as the front patio is decorated, as it is inside, and the staff wears a little bit of costume if they like. read more
