The lady behind the counter was extremely helpful when I explained that I was looking for a pair of silver hoops. She rummaged through pretty much all her stock that might contain said item but to no avail. That's when she, and the chap currently working on a piece right there and then, explained how the little shop come factory works. They will attempt to source any item you are looking for with a good enough replica, picture or description. Failing that they will just make up from scratch what you are looking for. For me this is a perfect service as what I am often looking for doesn't seem to exist. So, I'll be popping back in with the nearly right hoops I have already and a handful of adjectives. They also undertake jewellery repairs and aim for a day's turn around on all work undertaken.

It's a traditional jewellers shop, rather than the jeweller/pawn brokers which seems to be the norm now. They will buy in unwanted gold and jewellery but they do not offer any kind of cash loan service, I've sold to them once or twice and got a fair price for the scrap gold I had - more than if I'd left all the broken chains and odd earrings sitting in my jewellery box! This is a popular jewellers so if you see something in the window or display case that you really want then I suggest you buy it or leave a deposit as they have a high turnover and tend to have completely different items by the following week. Even if I'm not planning on buying anything I will always have a look in the window because their more unusual pieces are displayed here and sometimes I'll see a pair of earrings or bracelet that I 'just have to have'! Everything is clearly labelled so the price can be seen from outside, this is great because I can see at a glance whether I can afford is as there is nothing worse than having to go in to ask the cost only to find that you can't afford it after all! Once inside the shop has a calm, quiet feel like any good jewellers shop. The glass display cabinets are sparkling clean and show the jewellery and gifts inside off beautifully. There always seems to be a lot of necklaces and link bracelets for sale inside the shop, as well as gold charms and pendants. I think the prices are extremely reasonable, obviously there are the more expensive pieces but you should be able to find something nice within your budget. Nightingales also sell a range of clocks and gifts including those gorgeous hologram pendants featuring a photograph you provide. I also like their crystal ornaments and have bought several as presents over the years - of course I also bought the Zippo from years ago which my friend still has and was beautifully engraved with her name. The staff in Nightingales are excellent, they never seem to rush you and are content to let you browse for as long as you need. I always get the impression that they want me to make the right purchase decision and not the most expensive option. This is great because sometimes in jewellers shop I get the feeling I am being nudged into the most expensive item, but not in here.

I figured the guys in the Watch Centre MUST know - and indeed they did. 10 minutes later, brand new battery in my watch - good times! Excpept actually, incorrect times - as my watch had reset itself. It's a bit of a funny watch with only one button, and I couldn't figure out how to change the time myself.. so slightly sheepishly I trundled back into the shop. The guy who'd changed the batteries rolled his eyes at me in a comical way when I explained I had no idea how to set my own watch, and then magically he seemed to just prod it a few times and it was correct again! Hurrah! Now I only have to go see him twice a year when the clocks change...

The inside is very stylish, and, despite the small size of the shop, they have a great selection to choose from. I've found in my experience that watch prices are some of the most inelastic items in terms of prices, and it's very difficult to find any real savings (other than getting knock offs from a dodgy market stall). The lady was extremely polite and helpful and recommended an alternative seller Crescent Silver in Spencer Street. She even offered my wife and I a chocolate !! More than that she was absolutely correct as Derek Grant at Crescent had exactly what I was looking for and was also a delightful guy to do business with. A true professional. We had a great day in the Quarter and the level of service from those we met in the various shops was outstanding in comparison to the level of service on a normal city centre shopping area. I was told the see through back was not a good fit, even though it was the original Zenith display back because it had become detached but they had managed to fix it back in, but it will no longer be water resistant. I will add this had never happened before. When I got home and looked at the back I noticed scratches across the back.I will as a result of this have to buy and have a new display back fitted and a polish at considerable cost. Will not be using them again.

I've used their services several times before and they've never let me down, nor did I feel I was over charged, in fact they are undoubtedly cheaper than some of the more glamourous looking establishments offering the same services.
