They have an amazing selection of mainly women's silver jewellery, from costume to classy and everything in-between. The lady behind the counter was extremely helpful when I explained that I was looking for a pair of silver hoops. She rummaged through pretty much all her stock that might contain said item but to no avail. That's when she, and the chap currently working on a piece right there and then, explained how the little shop come factory works. They will attempt to source any item you are looking for with a good enough replica, picture or description. Failing that they will just make up from scratch what you are looking for. For me this is a perfect service as what I am often looking for doesn't seem to exist. So, I'll be popping back in with the nearly right hoops I have already and a handful of adjectives. They also undertake jewellery repairs and aim for a day's turn around on all work undertaken.

I first visited Nightingale Jewellery when I was looking to buy a Zippo lighter for a friends…read morebirthday, this was about 10 years ago and I've used them for my jewellery repairs and for purchases ever since. It's a traditional jewellers shop, rather than the jeweller/pawn brokers which seems to be the norm now. They will buy in unwanted gold and jewellery but they do not offer any kind of cash loan service, I've sold to them once or twice and got a fair price for the scrap gold I had - more than if I'd left all the broken chains and odd earrings sitting in my jewellery box! This is a popular jewellers so if you see something in the window or display case that you really want then I suggest you buy it or leave a deposit as they have a high turnover and tend to have completely different items by the following week. Even if I'm not planning on buying anything I will always have a look in the window because their more unusual pieces are displayed here and sometimes I'll see a pair of earrings or bracelet that I 'just have to have'! Everything is clearly labelled so the price can be seen from outside, this is great because I can see at a glance whether I can afford is as there is nothing worse than having to go in to ask the cost only to find that you can't afford it after all! Once inside the shop has a calm, quiet feel like any good jewellers shop. The glass display cabinets are sparkling clean and show the jewellery and gifts inside off beautifully. There always seems to be a lot of necklaces and link bracelets for sale inside the shop, as well as gold charms and pendants. I think the prices are extremely reasonable, obviously there are the more expensive pieces but you should be able to find something nice within your budget. Nightingales also sell a range of clocks and gifts including those gorgeous hologram pendants featuring a photograph you provide. I also like their crystal ornaments and have bought several as presents over the years - of course I also bought the Zippo from years ago which my friend still has and was beautifully engraved with her name. The staff in Nightingales are excellent, they never seem to rush you and are content to let you browse for as long as you need. I always get the impression that they want me to make the right purchase decision and not the most expensive option. This is great because sometimes in jewellers shop I get the feeling I am being nudged into the most expensive item, but not in here.

They have an impressive collection of clocks on the wall, but more impressive are the second hand watches in the window outside. The Casio watches caught my eye; they all look in great condition and are not as pricey as I had imagined. As for the jewellery, well there is all sorts really. I spotted a lot of cameo brooches, earrings and pendants which are quite fashionable these days across all generations. The rings and earrings generally were very beautiful. They also have wedding rings, charms, christening spoons and cheap costume jewellery. This place really reminds me of one of the copious amounts of second hand jewellery shops you find down the Lanes in Brighton.

As well as stocking an impressive selection of watches from the Swatch, Timex and Seconda ranges they also stock watch straps and batteries and will fit both for you free of charge. More expensive items - including wedding and engagement rings can be found in the shop window but they also specialise in second hand gold and silver jewellery and have bought gold long before Cash Converters and the like got in on the act and these tend to be held in a variety of tantalising display cabinets inside the store. This is a great place to pick up an unusual present - money clips, charms and charm bracelets, pill boxes and christening spoons can be found here. Staff are more than happy to help - I tend to go in with a sum in mind and they will recommend pieces to match (my often ahem meagre) budget.

The battery is dead and the strap is looking frayed and tired. The internet tells me that I can send the watch to Timex for them to carry out the repairs, but it'll take a few days to get back to me. So I trot of down to AA Jewellers. They've been good to me before. I sometimes need specialist batteries and they always have them in stock at a good price. The smiling chap behind the counter says he's got the replacement strap in stock, and the requisite battery too. Minutes later, (after we've shared a joke), the job is done. If you are after an efficient, quick and knowledgeable service for jewellery repairs, then AA Jewellers is your place.

They sell a fair few watches and a not particularly inspiring selection of jewellery. In fact, the retail end of the buisness seems a bit random, as it doesn't usual to me for a jewellers to sell that kind of digital scales. Anyhow, digressions aside, AA Jewellers and repairs is very much a does-what-it-says-on-the-tin kind of buisness, with little in the way of fancy trimmings. I've used their services several times before and they've never let me down, nor did I feel I was over charged, in fact they are undoubtedly cheaper than some of the more glamourous looking establishments offering the same services. Reccomended for jewellery repairs.
